Leadership Principles In 2 Corinthians, Gregory A. Smith
Leadership Principles In 2 Corinthians, Gregory A. Smith
Faculty Publications and Presentations
Paul’s relationship with the church at Corinth provides a detailed leadership case study. This is nowhere clearer than in 2 Corinthians, where every chapter displays Paul’s leadership attitudes and practices. Proceeding from the assumption that Paul’s leadership is worthy of emulation, this guide summarizes his behavior under eight headings:
• Accountability & Integrity
• Mission-Centeredness
• Investment in Followers
• Accurate Self-Concept
• Weakness & Adversity
• Assertiveness & Gentleness
• Advocacy
• Shared Responsibility
Following The Evidence: Approaches To Assessment In Academic Libraries, Gregory A. Smith
Following The Evidence: Approaches To Assessment In Academic Libraries, Gregory A. Smith
Faculty Publications and Presentations
In an environment of strained budgets and heightened accountability, academic libraries need to base their planning, decision-making, and advocacy on evidence more than ever before. Fortunately, the resources required to collect, analyze, and visualize data—thus turning it into evidence—are increasingly accessible. This session will challenge participants to grow in their handling of evidence by exposing them to a range of data sources and analysis tools. In order to accomplish this goal, the presenter will share brief sketches of a number of recent library assessment efforts, focusing on projects with which he has been involved personally. The session’s brevity will preclude …

The management of depression and other negative psychological states in cardiac patients has been a focus of multiple treatment trials, though such trials have not led to substantial improvements in cardiac outcomes. In contrast, there has been minimal focus on interventions to increase positive psychological states in cardiac patients, despite the fact that optimism and other positive states have been associated with superior cardiovascular outcomes. Our objective was to develop an 8-week, phone-based positive psychology intervention for patients hospitalized with acute cardiac disease (acute coronary syndrome or decompensated heart failure). Such an intervention would consist of positive psychology exercises adapted …

The Stability Of Offshore Outsourcing Relationships: The Role Of Relation Specificity And Client Control, Stephan Manning, Arie Y. Lewin, Marc Schuerch
Management and Marketing Faculty Publication Series
Offshore outsourcing of administrative and technical services has become a mainstream business practice. Increasing commoditization of business services and growing client experience with outsourcing have created a range of competitive service delivery options for client firms. Yet, data from the Offshoring Research Network (ORN) suggests that, despite increasing market options and growing client quality and cost efficiency expectations, clients typically renew provider contracts and develop longer-term relationships with providers. Based on ORN data, this paper explores drivers of this phenomenon. The findings suggest that providers promote contract renewal by making client specific investments in software, IT infrastructure and training, and …

Graduate Research Papers
According to faculty interviews, entering college freshmen frequently did not exhibit consistent knowledge of information literacy skills needed to be successful. Schools have increasingly used models of team teaching between librarians and professors to ensure students have information literacy skills. The purpose of this study was to explore the expectations and deficiencies in information literacy skills of entering college freshmen. The researcher questioned professors about (1) what skills they expected college freshmen to have, (2) students dispositions and responsibilities, (3) research inadequacies of students, and (4) the effect they felt using embedded librarians would have in other college departments. The …
Misunderstanding Congress: Statutory Interpretation, The Supermajoritarian Difficulty, And The Separation Of Powers, Victoria Nourse
Misunderstanding Congress: Statutory Interpretation, The Supermajoritarian Difficulty, And The Separation Of Powers, Victoria Nourse
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
Every lawyer's theory of statutory interpretation carries with it an idea of Congress, and every idea of Congress, in turn, carries with it an idea of the separation of powers. In this article, the author critiques three dominant academic theories of statutory interpretation--textualism, purposivism, and game theory--for their assumptions about Congress and the separation of powers. She argues that each academic theory fails to account for Congress's dominant institutional features: "the electoral connection," the "supermajoritarian difficulty," and the "principle of structure-induced ambiguity." This critique yields surprising conclusions, rejecting both standard liberal and conservative views on statutory interpretation.
"Plain" meaning, it …
Iowa’S 2010 Judicial Election: Appropriate Accountability Or Rampant Passion?, Roy A. Schotland
Iowa’S 2010 Judicial Election: Appropriate Accountability Or Rampant Passion?, Roy A. Schotland
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
Although 89% of state judges (appellate and general-jurisdiction trial judges) face some type of election, judicial elections are rarely thought of even by academics interested in elections. Iowa’s 2010 election, in which three Justices were defeated, is one of the most significant judicial elections ever. The Justices lost their seats because they participated in a unanimous 2009 decision upholding gay marriage. That decision stirred intense opposition among “social conservatives”, in Iowa a substantial proportion of the population and actively led by more than 100 ministers.
That active opposition was one of eight elements that created a perfect storm against the …

The German Discovery Of Sex (Spring 2011), Robert D. Tobin
The German Discovery Of Sex (Spring 2011), Robert D. Tobin
Syllabi
In this course, we will use the tools of literary and cultural analysis, studying fictional, political, psychoanalytic and scientific works to investigate the emergence of modern sexual discourses in the German-speaking world. The Greek term “homo” (same) and the Latinate “sex” (sex) were first combined to describe someone with a sexual interest in members of their own sex in 1869 in the German-speaking world. Similar observations can be made about terms such as “heterosexual,” “masochist,” and “transvestite.” There was apparently an intense interest in late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century German-speaking central Europe in reconfiguring and reconsidering sexuality. Out of this …

Serious games are, at their core, exploratory learning environments designed around the pedagogy and constraints associated with specific knowledge domains. This focus on instructional content is what separates games designed for entertainment from games designed to educate. As instructional designers and educators, the authors want serious game play to provide learners with a deep understanding of the domain, allowing them to use their knowledge in practice to think through multifaceted problems quickly and efficiently. Attention to the design of serious game affordances is essential to facilitating the development of domain knowledge during game play. As such, the authors contend that …

The Born-Digital Deluge : Documenting Twenty-First Century Events., Rachel Howard, Heather Fox, Caroline Daniels
Faculty and Staff Scholarship
With digital recording devices readily available to most people, events are documented and shared on-line in real time by the “person on the street.” The ease of creation and dissemination belies what archivists know will be the long-term challenges of organizing and preserving collections of born-digital information. While other processes require little modification, the inherent fragility of digital content and the ease of depositing files call for a substantial modification of established procedures. In this article, three University of Louisville archivists discuss their approach to the acquisition, copyright transfer, file naming, selection, description, and preservation of born-digital content donated by …

Faculty and Staff Scholarship
In addition to providing basic and intermediate Endnote instruction and training, clinical librarians at the Kornhauser Health Sciences Library (KHSL) now offer faculty, physicians, researchers, and students individualized training and technical support via "EndNote Housecalls," assistance in the creation of specialized research libraries, library and bibliographic consultation and organization, and the delivery of patron-requested literature search results in customized EndNote Libraries via email. This paper will focus on the design and implementation of KHSL's EndNote citation management software training program, and its subsequent transformation into a service to address the knowledge management needs of our constituents.
Individual Differences In Need For Affect And Reactivity, Ryan Thibodeau, Kelsey Krueger
Individual Differences In Need For Affect And Reactivity, Ryan Thibodeau, Kelsey Krueger
Psychology Faculty/Staff Publications
People are different with respect to their emotional propensities, including emotional abilities/skills and emotional style. Regarding emotional abilities/skills, alexithymia (i.e., difficulties identifying and describing emotions; Bagby et al., 1994) and emotional intelligence (Mayer et al., 1999) have been among the more widely studied constructs. Regarding emotional style, research has examined the intensity of emotion (Larsen et al., 1986) and individual differences in general positive/negative affectivity (Watson et al., 1988) or specific emotions (e.g., anxiety; Spielberger, 1985). Notably, very little work has examined people’s motivation to pursue experiences that should give rise to strong emotion.
To fill this gap, Maio and …

Demand For Cigarettes By Teenagers And Young Adults And Their Smoking Transitions, Ce Shang
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This paper provides the first comprehensive analysis of the effects of cigarette prices, cigarette excise taxes, smoke-free air laws, youth access laws, state spending on comprehensive tobacco control programs, socio-economic factors, and demographic characteristics on measures of demand for smoking, especially light and intermittent smoking by teenagers and young adults in a long panel. I employ the panel to estimate demand for cigarette smoking by young people and the determinants of transitions from light or intermittent smoking to heavy or regular smoking in the following years. Finally, I estimate transitions in the opposite direction: from regular or heavy smoking to …
A Systematic Review Of The Literature On The Effects Of School Bullying From The Framework Of Jurgen Habermas’S Theory Of Communicative Action, Gary Kogan
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This project is a systematic review of the US quantitative, empirical studies on the effects of school bullying for the purpose of determining the degree to which Jurgen Habermas’s social theory, the theory of communicative action, can be used to understand the constellation of measured effects. School bullying is defined as a systematic abuse of power: the empirical literature on school bullying, therefore, provides a large data set on the abuse of power. The review finds strong consistency between the theory and the results of selected studies suggesting that Habermas’s theory of communicative action can explain and predict the mechanisms …
Using Ordinary Least Squares Regression And Quantile Regression To Test The Capital Asset Pricing Model And The Fama And French Model In The Australian Equity Market, Yixaun Rui
Theses : Honours
Many studies have tested the CAPM and the Fama and French model in the Australian security market using the Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) method. However, this regression method just focuses on the relationship between means in the dataset, and equity market usually has some extreme situations in the tails. In this study, quantile regression will be used as well as OLS to provide a more comprehensive picture. This research will also compare the domestic and overseas indices in testing the CAPM and the Fama and French model. A twenty-year data sample composed of the 50 largest companies' equity returns will …
How Short And Long Term Interdependencies Have Changed Due To The Global Financial Crisis, Lungowe Andala
How Short And Long Term Interdependencies Have Changed Due To The Global Financial Crisis, Lungowe Andala
Theses : Honours
This study investigates how short and long term interdependencies have changed among ten countries grouped into countries from the same region (close geographical proximity) as a result of the recent Global Financial Crisis. A number of econometrics methodologies are employed in doing the analysis. Johansen's cointegration methodology is carried out to assess whether the stock markets have long run interdependencies and whether these interdependencies have changed as a result of the Global Financial Crisis. For the stock markets not cointegrated Granger Causality is carried out to analyze short run interdependencies between pairs of stock markets. Furthermore, generalized Impulse Response Function …
The Experiences Of Indigenous Australian Psychologists And Higher Education, Shaun Cameron
The Experiences Of Indigenous Australian Psychologists And Higher Education, Shaun Cameron
Theses : Honours
Disparities exist between Indigenous Australians and non-Indigenous Australians on indicators of life expectancy, alcohol and drug use, adult and juvenile incarceration, and rates of hospitalisation for self-harm, suicide, and mental and behavioural disorders due to psychoactive substance use (Australian Human Rights Commission, 2008; Commonwealth of Australia, 2011). Psychology is a discipline that can assist in remedying these issues, yet disparities are evident in Indigenous participation in higher education generally, as well as within tertiary psychology education specifically (Jones, Dudgeon, & Kelly, 2010). Ten Indigenous Australian psychologists were interviewed to investigate possible barriers and enablers for Indigenous students studying psychology. Hermeneutic …
Pre-Adulthood Developmental Psycho-Social Influences Behind Women Becoming Engineers In Contemporary Australia, Andrew Ruscoe
Pre-Adulthood Developmental Psycho-Social Influences Behind Women Becoming Engineers In Contemporary Australia, Andrew Ruscoe
Theses : Honours
This study explored the pre-adulthood development of female engineers with a focus on influences behind their career choice. Pre-adulthood encompasses the ages 0. to 23 and includes all development prior to settling on a career (Levinson, Darrow, Klein, Levinson, & McKee, 1979). ,This area of study derives its importance from the continuing low proportion of women in engineering (9.6%; Kaspura, 2009), the gender bias that this may indicate (Burke & Mattis, 2007), and the benefits of increasing the number of women• in engineering (Engineers Australia, 20 I 0). A phenomenological methodology was applied, utilising semi-structured interviews with 10 female graduate, …
Resilience: The Role Of Optimism, Perceived Parental Autonomy Support And Perceived Social Support, Michelle Dawson
Resilience: The Role Of Optimism, Perceived Parental Autonomy Support And Perceived Social Support, Michelle Dawson
Theses : Honours
Resilience is an individual’s ability to positively adapt when challenging, adverse or stressful circumstances arise. Transitions are a change from what is familiar to what is unfamiliar and undergoing transitions may provide challenges that may cause anxiety and stress. Three mechanisms suggested to be beneficial in coping with transitions as well as developing and maintaining and potentially predicting resilience are optimism, perceived parental autonomy support (PAS) and perceived social support (PSS). This review will begin by providing definitions of resilience, risk and protective factors, buffering effects, a brief historical overview of the development of resilience research with mention of the …
Blood Donor Motivation: A Phenomenological Study Of Young Male Donors, Aleeza Morris
Blood Donor Motivation: A Phenomenological Study Of Young Male Donors, Aleeza Morris
Theses : Honours
The demand for blood products in Australia is projected to increase substantially in coming years. Yet population growth and population ageing will present challenges to blood donor recruitment and hence threaten the availability of adequate blood supplies for the future. Improving the retention of blood donors offers an opportunity to leverage this availability of blood products, and a focus on young men can be particularly beneficial because men become the biggest cohort of donors later in life. This research was conducted in collaboration with the Australian Red Cross Blood Service. It applied a descriptive phenomenological methodology to explore the factors …
