Who's To Blame When A Business Fails? How Journalistic Death Metaphors Influence Responsibility Attributions, Ann Williams Dec 2010

Who's To Blame When A Business Fails? How Journalistic Death Metaphors Influence Responsibility Attributions, Ann Williams

Ann E Williams

This study unites a textual analysis and an experimental audience study to document the use of death metaphor in business news and to assess the impact that death metaphor has on audiences' attributions of responsibility for corporate failure. The findings show that death metaphors are frequently used in financial press coverage and that the use of death metaphor influences audience members' responsibility attributions by intensifying overall levels of blame, while simultaneously deflecting blame away from the executives responsible for managing the firm and diffusing it to other factors, including the state of the economy, the government, and individual consumers.

Residents' Coping Strategies In An Extended Stay Hotel Home, Terri Lewinson Dec 2010

Residents' Coping Strategies In An Extended Stay Hotel Home, Terri Lewinson

Terri Lewinson

Purpose: Housing affordability has been a chronic problem for many low-income families even before the current economic crisis, which has resulted in an enduring season of housing foreclosures and evictions (Wardrip, Pelletiere, & Crowley, 2009). Many families have been displaced and are now moving from one motel or extended-stay hotel to the next as a housing solution (Eckholm, 2009; Jenkins, 2009; LeBlanc, 2008). The experience of shelter displacement is richly represented in the literature (Delaney, 2004; Manzo, Kleit, & Couch, 2008; Moorer, 2006). However, the experiences of families coping with residential stress in extended-stay hotels are not as well known. …

Exploring "Home" At An Assisted Living Facility: Looking Through Residents' Lenses With Photovoice, Terri Lewinson, Vanessa Robinson-Dooley

Terri Lewinson

Purpose: An increasing number of older adults are moving into assisted living facilities when living independently becomes difficult. For some residents, the transition to and settlement in these facilities can negatively impact psychological well-being. Successful transition into an assisted living facility occurs when a resident feels “at home” in their new environment (Cutchin, Chang & Owen, 2005). It is important to understand residents' perceptions of the assisted living facility while they reconcile the loss of previous homes. Although a growing body of literature exists in this area, there is limited research on how African American older adults perceive the assisted …

The Material-Weight Illusion Induced By Expectations Alone, Gavin Buckingham, Nathalie Ranger, Melvyn Goodale Dec 2010

The Material-Weight Illusion Induced By Expectations Alone, Gavin Buckingham, Nathalie Ranger, Melvyn Goodale

Gavin Buckingham

In the material-weight illusion (MWI), equally weighted objects that appear to be made from different materials are incorrectly perceived as having different weights when they are lifted one after the other. Here, we show that continuous visual experience of the lift is not a prerequisite for this compelling misperception of weight; merely priming the lifters' expectations of heaviness is sufficient for them to experience a robust MWI. Furthermore, these expectations continued to influence the load force used to lift MWI-inducing stimuli trial after trial, supporting the notion that vision plays an important role in the skillful lifting of objects.

Family Labor Participation And Child Care Decisions: The Role Of Grannies, Gema Zamarro Dec 2010

Family Labor Participation And Child Care Decisions: The Role Of Grannies, Gema Zamarro

Gema Zamarro

One of the most significant long term trends in the labor market in most OECD countries has been the increase in the proportion of working mothers. However, not all countries show the same pattern. Countries in Southern Europe (Italy, Greece and Spain) show an average participation rate of about 45% whereas the participation rates in Northern countries (Denmark, Sweden) are around 75%. The characteristics of child care systems also differ significantly across OECD countries. This along with the characteristics of the labor market may have led families to get the necessary social services in an alternative way, i.e. through grandmothers. …

Approaches To Crime Control And Order Maintenance In Transitional Societies: The Role Of Village Headmen, Chiefs, Sub-Chiefs & Administration Police In Rural Kenya, Jospeter Mbuba, Florence Mugambi Dec 2010

Approaches To Crime Control And Order Maintenance In Transitional Societies: The Role Of Village Headmen, Chiefs, Sub-Chiefs & Administration Police In Rural Kenya, Jospeter Mbuba, Florence Mugambi

Florence N. Mugambi

The need to illuminate and contextualize approaches to crime control and order maintenance in transitional societies has become increasingly necessary, thanks to the pervasiveness of social disorder and the elusive nature of crime in general. This study focuses on the functions of the Provincial Administration and the Administration Police in Kenya in order to reveal the little known but overarching powers of Chiefs and Sub-Chiefs as the official agents of crime control and order maintenance in the rural parts of the country. The study, which is a culmination of an in-depth review of Kenya’s legal framework and other germane literature, …

Computers And Networks, Lisa Zilinski Dec 2010

Computers And Networks, Lisa Zilinski

Lisa Zilinski

Understanding how computers work requires knowledge of the physical structures and capabilities of the hardware, as well as how these capabilities are organized and controlled through software. Effective computer management also requires the ability to understand and support users' activities while at the same time anticipating potential threats to the system. Computing and communication technologies continue to evolve, which means that the system manager must also find ways to keep up with advances that improve the capability, reliability, and accessibility of these important tools for information management.

Organizational Confidence: An Empirical Assessment Of Highly Positive Public Managers, Mary Feeney, Craig Boardman Dec 2010

Organizational Confidence: An Empirical Assessment Of Highly Positive Public Managers, Mary Feeney, Craig Boardman

Craig Boardman

There is a great deal of research investigating public servants' perceptions of organizational problems (e.g., red tape, bureaucratic control); however, there is little research investigating public servants who have highly positive perceptions of their organizations. This article assesses perceptions of state employees to investigate individual- and organizational-level correlates with highly positive government workers, which we define as workers reporting high levels of pride in the organization for which they work, and who believe that the organization provides high-quality public services and operates by highly ethical standards. Using data from the National Administrative Studies Project III, we draw from formal theories …

Mentoring In The Context Of Latino Youth's Broader Village During Their Transition From High School, Julia Pryce

Julia Pryce

The aims of this study were to examine the mentoring and social network experiences of Latino youth during the high school transition. A mixed- methods approach was used to examine participants’ natural mentoring relationships before and after the transition along with the broader social networks of youth.A total of 32 Latino participants completed quantitative surveys before the high school transition and then participated in qualitative interviews 1 year later. Having a mentor at Time 1 predicted having a mentor at Time 2. Findings revealed three mentoring groups: participants with mentors at both time points, participants with a mentor at one …

Interpersonal Tone Within School-Based Youth Mentoring Relationships, Julia Pryce

Julia Pryce

This prospective, mixed-method study presents an in-depth view of school- based youth mentoring relationships using qualitative data from direct obser- vations, in-depth interviews, and open-ended questionnaires with mentors and students. The dimension of interpersonal tone, referring to the interaction style between adult mentor and student, was investigated using a pattern-oriented approach. The analyses identify four distinctive patterns of interpersonal tone and categorize mentor–student relationships according to systematic varia- tion on this dimension. The study integrates quantitative assessments of relationship quality to corroborate and supplement these inductively derived categories. Findings reveal meaningful distinctions in the nature and quality of mentoring relationships and suggest …

Advocacy Week: A Model To Prepare Clinical Social Workers For Lobby Day, Julia Pryce Dec 2010

Advocacy Week: A Model To Prepare Clinical Social Workers For Lobby Day, Julia Pryce

Julia Pryce

Legislative advocacy is an important and lotig-standing skill in social work. However, this role cannot be left solely to social workers who specialize in macro and policy practice. Rather, clinical social workers who assist clients as they face "private" troubles (Mills, 1959) also need to face the structural barriers that contribute to these concerns. The effect of proposed bills on the practice and welfare of clients is another reason for clinical social workers to advocate within the legislative process. This article proposes the Advocacy Week model, which prepares clinical students for the National Association of Social Workers-sponsored Advocacy Day, an …

Recruiting Content For The Institutional Repository: The Barriers Exceed The Benefits, Denise Troll Covey Dec 2010

Recruiting Content For The Institutional Repository: The Barriers Exceed The Benefits, Denise Troll Covey

Denise Troll Covey

Focus groups conducted at Carnegie Mellon reveal that what motivates many faculty to self-archive on a website or disciplinary repository will not motivate them to deposit their work in the institutional repository. Recruiting a critical mass of content for the institutional repository is contingent on increasing awareness, aligning deposit with existing workflows, and providing value-added services that meet needs not currently being met by other tools. Faculty share concerns about quality and the payoff for time invested in publishing and disseminating their work, but disagree about metrics for assessing quality, the merit of disseminating work prior to peer review, and …
