Prólogo. Desde Adentro: Viviendo La Construcción De Las Ciudades Con Su Gente, Jaime F. Erazo Espinosa Arq.

Jaime Erazo

Earth- and space-based observations provide synergistic information for space mission encounters by providing data over longer timescales, at different wavelengths and using techniques that are impossible with an in situ flyby. We report here such observations in support of the EPOXI spacecraft flyby of comet 103P/Hartley 2. The nucleus is small and dark, and exhibited a very rapidly changing rotation period. Prior to the onset of activity, the period was ~16.4 hr. Starting in 2010 August the period changed from 16.6 hr to near 19 hr in December. With respect to dust composition, most volatiles and carbon and nitrogen isotope …

Spesa Innovativa, Impatto Dell’Innovazione E Profitti Nelle Imprese Italiane, Francesco Bogliacino, Matteo Lucchese, Leopoldo Nascia, Mario Pianta

Mario Pianta

Innovation And Development. The Evidence From Innovation Surveys, Francesco Bogliacino, Giulio Perani, Mario Pianta, Stefano Supino Dec 2010

Innovation And Development. The Evidence From Innovation Surveys, Francesco Bogliacino, Giulio Perani, Mario Pianta, Stefano Supino

Mario Pianta

In this article we investigate the existing evidence on innovation produced by innovation surveys in developing and emerging countries in Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America. We review the literature, discuss methodological issues, and analyse the results for the countries with the most comparable surveys, considering the well established findings of innovation surveys for Europe as a benchmark. From the evidence we considered, regional patterns are identified and some stylized facts on innovation and development are proposed, pointing out the specificity of innovation processes in economies engaged in industrialisation and catching-up.

Engines Of Growth. Innovation And Productivity In Industry Groups, Mario Pianta, Francesco Bogliacino Dec 2010

Engines Of Growth. Innovation And Productivity In Industry Groups, Mario Pianta, Francesco Bogliacino

Mario Pianta

The diversity of technological activities that contribute to growth in labour productivity is examined in this article for manufacturing and services industries in eight major EU countries. We test the relevance of two “engines of growth”, i.e., the strategies of technological competitiveness (based on innovation in products and markets) and cost competitiveness (relying on innovation in processes and machinery) and their impact on economic performance. We propose models for the determinants of changes in labour productivity and we carry out empirical tests for both the whole economy and for the four Revised Pavitt classes that group manufacturing and services industries …

Death Of A Child, Samuel J. Smith Dec 2010

Death Of A Child, Samuel J. Smith

Samuel James Smith

Of the possible losses one might experience, the death of a child is among the most intense. For a parent to bury a child screams against the order of the universe, beginning a journey of bereavement that may linger in varying degrees and manifestations throughout a parent’s lifetime. Specific circumstances prior to and surrounding the death of a child—such as the manner of death (e.g., sudden accident, suicide, or prolonged illness) or preexisting family stress—may complicate the grieving process for both relatives and friends.

El “No Al Voto Electrónico”: ¿Porqué En Algunos Países La Implementación Del Voto Electrónico Es Exitosa Y En Otros Fracasa?, Fernando Barrientos Del Monte Dec 2010

El “No Al Voto Electrónico”: ¿Porqué En Algunos Países La Implementación Del Voto Electrónico Es Exitosa Y En Otros Fracasa?, Fernando Barrientos Del Monte

Fernando Barrientos Del Monte

The Grammar Of "Meaning", Lajos L. Brons Dec 2010

The Grammar Of "Meaning", Lajos L. Brons

Lajos Brons

In "The Grammar of 'Meaning'", I suggested that the verb "to mean" should be understood as a 4-place predicate MEAN': MEAN' (AGENT*, SIGN*, D-MEANING, LANGUAGE-GAME**) in which of the two arguments AGENT and SIGN (marked *) one is obligatory and fills the subject slot and the other is an optional, oblique argument, and in which LANGUAGE-GAME (**) or context of uttering is always an oblique argument. The argument D-MEANING represents ‘the meaning’ of the sign as that term is usually understood: a description of meaning.

The prime in "MEAN'" marks the distinction from the 2-place predicate MEAN(SUBJECT, D-MEANING), which is …

Narratives Of Diversity In The Corporate Boardroom: What Corporate Insiders Say About Why Diversity Matters, John M. Conley, Lissa Lamkin Broome, Kimberly D. Krawiec Dec 2010

Narratives Of Diversity In The Corporate Boardroom: What Corporate Insiders Say About Why Diversity Matters, John M. Conley, Lissa Lamkin Broome, Kimberly D. Krawiec

Kimberly D. Krawiec

Over the last generation, the concept of diversity has become commonplace and taken-for-granted in discourses ranging from law to education to business. In higher education, for example, it is hard to imagine a faculty job search or a student admissions discussion that was not heavily laden with talk of diversity, in the sense of the representative inclusion of women and racial and ethnic minorities in a group or organization. In this paper we present the results of an interview-based study of the discourse of diversity in a particular business setting: the corporate boardroom. Our principal observation is that—thirty-one years after …

Skill-Biased Technology Imports, Increased Schooling Access, And Income Inequality In Developing Countries, Alberto Behar Dec 2010

Skill-Biased Technology Imports, Increased Schooling Access, And Income Inequality In Developing Countries, Alberto Behar

Alberto Behar

Why has schooling not countered the pervasive rises in wage inequality driven by skill-biased technical change? Using data and a model of directed technical change in which developing countries acquire technology licenses from abroad, we show technological change is skill-biased in the South simply because it is in the North. This causes permanently rising wage inequality in the South. We model expanded schooling access as producing relatively educated new cohorts of labor market entrants. This makes the market for skill-biased technologies more attractive, which generates accelerated skill-biased technical change, which leads to higher wage inequality and possibly stagnant unskilled wages.

Mitigating Social And Health Inequities: Community Participation And Chagas Disease In Rural Argentina, Ignacio Llovet, Graciela Dinardi, Fernando De Maio Dec 2010

Mitigating Social And Health Inequities: Community Participation And Chagas Disease In Rural Argentina, Ignacio Llovet, Graciela Dinardi, Fernando De Maio

Fernando De Maio

Chagas disease (CD) causes 12,500 deaths annually in Latin America. As a neglected disease primarily associated with poverty, it is a major driver of health inequity. Argentina's efforts to control vector transmission have been unsuccessful. Using new survey data (n=400 households), we compare the social patterning of the burden of CD by examining socio-demographic predictors of self-reported CD and the presence of vinchucas in two areas of rural northern Argentina known to have experienced different interventions in surveillance and control. Our analyses suggest that Avellaneda, an area known for horizontal intervention strategies which nurture community participation is quite distinct from …

The Effects Of Need For Autonomy And Preference For Seeking Help From Informal Sources On Emerging Adults’ Intentions To Access Mental Health Services For Common Mental Disorders And Suicidal Thoughts., Coralie J. Wilson Dec 2010

The Effects Of Need For Autonomy And Preference For Seeking Help From Informal Sources On Emerging Adults’ Intentions To Access Mental Health Services For Common Mental Disorders And Suicidal Thoughts., Coralie J. Wilson

Coralie J Wilson

Emerging or early adulthood is the life stage spanning 18-25 years of age. In Australia, anxiety and affective disorders (often classified as ‘common mental disorders’) are prevalent in this age group and suicide is also a concern. Professional mental health care can reduce the long-term impact of these mental health problems and protect against the development of severe forms of these disorders. However, up to three-quarters of young people with mental health needs do not seek professional help for their condition. This study aimed to examine the extent to which belief in the need for autonomy and intentions to seek …

Using Children’S Tv To Teach Globalization: Dora, Diego, Kai-Lan And Global Values?, Jon D. Carlson Dec 2010

Using Children’S Tv To Teach Globalization: Dora, Diego, Kai-Lan And Global Values?, Jon D. Carlson

Jon D. Carlson

Cultural homogenization is a contentious part of the globalization debate. Critics concerned with cultural homogenization fear the “McDonaldization” of global culture, usually described as a mono-directional outward wave of American pop culture swamping alternate views and traditional value systems. Less skeptical analysts of cultural globalization focus on the concept of cultural hybridization. This project uses the apparently innocuous measure of children’s TV programming in the US as a window onto the globalization debate. While globalization critics generally assume the forces of culture to be predominantly monodirectional (US/West outward), arguments for hybridity argue for a mixing of cultures. We examine more …

Japanese Liberal Democratic Party Support And The Gender Gap: A New Approach, Daniel P. Aldrich Dec 2010

Japanese Liberal Democratic Party Support And The Gender Gap: A New Approach, Daniel P. Aldrich

Daniel P Aldrich

Scholars have argued that there is a broad gender gap in support for the long-ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) in Japan. We uncover strong evidence that age, rather than gender, along with rural or urban location, serves as the most critical determinant of party support. Through logistic regression, propensity score matching and simulation techniques applied to four large-scale datasets; we demonstrate that age effects are consistent but slowly diminishing across cohorts between the mid-1970s and the early 2000s. As Japanese women and men age, they come to support the LDP at similar rates controlling for education, income and other demographic …

Do Social Connections Reduce Moral Hazard? Evidence From The New York City Taxi Industry, C. Kirabo Jackson, Henry Schneider Dec 2010

Do Social Connections Reduce Moral Hazard? Evidence From The New York City Taxi Industry, C. Kirabo Jackson, Henry Schneider

C. Kirabo Jackson

We investigate the role of social networks in aligning the incentives of agents in settings with incomplete contracts. We study the New York City taxi industry where taxis are often leased and lessee-drivers have worse driving outcomes than owner-drivers due to a moral hazard associated with incomplete contracts. We find that: (1) drivers leasing from members of their country-of-birth community exhibit significantly reduced effects of moral hazard; (2) network effects appear to operate via social sanctions; and (3) network benefits can help to explain the industry organization in terms of which drivers and owners form business relationships.

Techniques Of Pleasure: Bdsm And The Circuits Of Sexuality, Margot Weiss Dec 2010

Techniques Of Pleasure: Bdsm And The Circuits Of Sexuality, Margot Weiss

Margot Weiss

Techniques of Pleasure is a vivid portrayal of the San Francisco Bay Area’s pansexual BDSM (SM) community. Margot Weiss conducted ethnographic research at dungeon play parties and at workshops on bondage, role play, and flogging, and she interviewed more than sixty SM practitioners. She describes a scene devoted to a form of erotic play organized around technique, rules and regulations, consumerism, and self-mastery. Challenging the notion that SM is inherently transgressive, Weiss links the development of commodity-oriented sexual communities and the expanding market for sex toys to the eroticization of gendered, racialized, and national inequalities. She analyzes the politics of …
