Programa Mínimo Para A Democracia, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha Jan 2012

Programa Mínimo Para A Democracia, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

É sempre salutar discutir a Democracia. É sinónimo dela... Ou que, na sua falta, há quem com ela se preocupe. Contudo, mais que isso nos parece urgente defendê-la. E o programa mínimo de …

Childhood Sexual Abuse And Substance Abuse In Relation To Depression And Coping, Sonja Lee, Michael Lyvers, Mark Edwards Jan 2012

Childhood Sexual Abuse And Substance Abuse In Relation To Depression And Coping, Sonja Lee, Michael Lyvers, Mark Edwards

Mark Edwards

Relationships between Childhood Sexual Abuse (CSA), substance abuse, substance abuse relapse, depression and coping styles were examined in an Australian sample. Participants were 79 adults actively seeking treatment for substance abuse or CSA. CSA and substance use history were assessed using a purpose built questionnaire. Depression was assessed using the Beck Depression Inventory Second Edition (BDI-II), and coping styles were evaluated using the Coping Scale for Adults. Among substance abusers, self-reported CSA history was associated with (1) severe depression; (2) less optimistic coping; (3) longer duration of substance abuse; and (4) the use of drugs to alleviate negative moods. A …

A Comparative Review Of “How To” Books For Parents Of Adhd Children And “How To” Books For Parents Of Typical Children, Bora Pajo, Paul H. Stuart Dr. Jan 2012

A Comparative Review Of “How To” Books For Parents Of Adhd Children And “How To” Books For Parents Of Typical Children, Bora Pajo, Paul H. Stuart Dr.

All Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Although an increasing number of children are diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and take medications to control their behaviors, a well-publicized controversy persists about whether ADHD refers to a common neurobehavioral disorder of childhood or to various medicalized temperamental, educational, and cultural differences and difficulties of children. Moreover, behaviors indicative of ADHD are commonly found among all children—although with different frequencies. This paper aims to identify and compare the type of information provided to parents of ADHD and non-ADHD diagnosed children through readily available self-help books. Searches using popular online bookstores were conducted to rank and select the …

The Ecological And Civil Mainsprings Of Property: An Experimental Economic History Of Whalers’ Rules Of Capture, Bart J. Wilson, Taylor Jaworski, Karl E. Schurter, Andrew Smyth Jan 2012

The Ecological And Civil Mainsprings Of Property: An Experimental Economic History Of Whalers’ Rules Of Capture, Bart J. Wilson, Taylor Jaworski, Karl E. Schurter, Andrew Smyth

Economics Faculty Research and Publications

This article uses a laboratory experiment to probe the proposition that property emerges anarchically out of social custom. We test the hypothesis that whalers in the 18th and 19th centuries developed rules of conduct that minimized the sum of the transaction and production costs of capturing their prey, the primary implication being that different ecological conditions led to different rules of capture. Ceteris paribus, we find that simply imposing two different types of prey is insufficient to observe two different rules of capture. Another factor is essential, namely, as Samuel Pufendorf theorized over 300 years ago, that the members of …

Considering A New Framework For Designing Pubic Safety 'Filler' Messages On Highway Variable-Message Signs: Applying The Behaviour Change Wheel, Marilyn Mitchell Jan 2012

Considering A New Framework For Designing Pubic Safety 'Filler' Messages On Highway Variable-Message Signs: Applying The Behaviour Change Wheel, Marilyn Mitchell

Marilyn Mitchell

This paper reviews literature regarding ‘filler’ (particularly safety) messages on variable message signs (VMS), then evaluates the applicability of Michie, van Stralen and West’s behaviour change wheel for message generation using examples from Queensland. Although designed for generating health care interventions, the wheel readily extends itself to road safety. The paper concludes with a brief list of techniques for writing persuasive safety messages. This research was conducted because limited research is available on VMS safety messages or models for their generation. The literature review indicated that although controversy exists regarding the use of VMS for safety messages, more drivers would …

Acid Resistance, Bile Tolerance And Antimicrobial Properties Of Dominant Lactic Acid Bacteria Isolated From Traditional “Maari” Baobab Seeds Fermented Condiment, Donatien Kabore, Hagrétou Sawadogo-Lingani, Mamoudou H. Dicko Prof., Bréhima Diawara, Mogens Jacobsen Jan 2012

Acid Resistance, Bile Tolerance And Antimicrobial Properties Of Dominant Lactic Acid Bacteria Isolated From Traditional “Maari” Baobab Seeds Fermented Condiment, Donatien Kabore, Hagrétou Sawadogo-Lingani, Mamoudou H. Dicko Prof., Bréhima Diawara, Mogens Jacobsen

Pr. Mamoudou H. DICKO, PhD

Maari is a fermented food condiment obtained by spontaneous fermentation of seeds from the baobab tree (Adansonia digitata). Nine dominant lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains, isolated from traditional maari fermentation were examined for their resistance to pH 2.5, their tolerance to 0.3% bile and their antimicrobial activities against pathogenic bacteria. The agar spot test was used to screen the dominant LAB for antagonistic activity against a total of 21 indicator organisms including Bacillus cereus strains, Salmonella spp., Listeria monocytogenes, Yersinia enterocolitica, Escherichia coli and Micrococcus luteus. It was observed that all LAB strains survived in 0.3% bile and exhibited antimicrobial …

A New Age In Higher Education Or Just A Little Bit Of History Repeating? : Linking The Past Present And Future Of All In Australia, Alisa Percy Jan 2012

A New Age In Higher Education Or Just A Little Bit Of History Repeating? : Linking The Past Present And Future Of All In Australia, Alisa Percy

Alisa Percy, PhD

For those relatively new to the field of Academic Language and Learning, the ‘new’ social inclusion agenda may appear as the dawning of a new age in higher education—a revolutionary moment in history where the qualitative transformation of teaching and learning feels imminent. For others, it may feel like ‘a little bit of history repeating’. This paper critically examines the limitations of the agency of ALL in ‘forging new directions’ by considering how the past haunts the present. Using the lens of governmentality (Foucault, 1991; Rose, 1999; Dean, 1999), the paper makes the claim that, given that ALL is deeply …

Overview Of The National Longitudinal Survey Of Public Health Systems, Glen Mays Jan 2012

Overview Of The National Longitudinal Survey Of Public Health Systems, Glen Mays

Glen Mays

Since 1998, researchers have followed a nationally representative cohort of U.S. communities to examine the types of public health activities performed within the community, the range of organizations contributing to each activity, and the perceived effectiveness of each activity in addressing community needs. This information, obtained through a validated survey of local public health officials, provides an in-depth view of the structure and function of local public health delivery systems and how these systems evolve over time. Originally conducted with support from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Longitudinal Survey of Public Health Systems (NLSPHS) was …

At Albertsons Library, User-Centered Is More Than A Trendy Phrase, Peggy S. Cooper

Peggy S. Cooper

At Albertsons Library being user-centered is at the heart of our decision-making. We focus our collective staff energy on what our users want and need. How do we know? We ask them. In focus groups, in LibQual surveys, at the reference desk, and in course evaluations -- we ask, we listen and we act on their requests.

City-Assisted Evacuation Plan Participant Survey Report, John Kiefer, Pamela Jenkins, Shirley Laska Jan 2012

City-Assisted Evacuation Plan Participant Survey Report, John Kiefer, Pamela Jenkins, Shirley Laska

John J. Kiefer

The survey of participants in the City Assisted Evacuation Program (CAEP) indicated a variety of perceptions about their evacuation experience during and after Hurricane Gustav. While the CAEP was generally regarded by most participants as successful, there are some aspects that were identified as needing improvement. Some of these can be improved by the city; some improvements are under the purview of the state or the federal government. Some can be fixed expeditiously; some will require a long-term commitment.

Announcements And Plenary Address – The Creative Habit: Curiosity And The Qualitative Researcher, Valerie J. Janesick

The Qualitative Report Conference

In this session I will describe and explain how creativity can be a good habit to nurture for the qualitative researcher. I will draw upon my experience in dance and in qualitative research to discuss the habits of observation, interviewing, writing, analyzing and disseminating research findings. Curiosity is a key component of working in the qualitative arena. In order to be creative and curious you have to prepare for it. By looking at exemplars in the arts, sciences and social sciences we can learn a great deal about becoming curious.
