Features Of Child Food Insecurity After The 2010 Haiti Earthquake: Results From A Random Survey Of Households, Royce Hutson, Eileen Trzcinski, Athena Kolbe

Royce A. Hutson

Purpose: In January 2010, a 7.0 earthquake struck the island nation of Haiti resulting in the estimated deaths of 230,000 people and billions of dollars in destruction. Researchers estimated that 160,000 individuals died in Port-au-Prince alone. Recently several high profile journals have editorialized that this earthquake was not just a natural disaster and that proper prevention efforts could have reduced the casualties significantly. However, there is a paucity of research on the antecedents to victimization in natural disasters. Using a two-wave 1,500 household survey with the second wave conducted six weeks after the earthquake; this study examines the household and …

Smuggling, Border Security And International Development In Wadi Khaled, Lebanon: Results From A Random Survey Of Households, Royce Hutson, Taylor Long

Royce A. Hutson

Purpose: The prevention the smuggling of drugs, guns, humans, and other criminal contraband has posed a significant challenge for many governments. The problem is even more acute in developing and underdeveloped countries. Of particular concern to international development experts is the ‘enabling environment' for smuggling that is created when communities accept smuggling behaviors as normative. Also, concern has grown that improving border security in smuggling areas may have significant negative socio-economic impacts on these communities. Using a randomized household survey conducted in a frontier region between Lebanon and Syria well-known for smuggling, this study examines factors associated with smuggling behaviors …

Gis Collaborations In Saskatchewan: Sgic And The University Of Saskatchewan Library (Accepted Manuscript Version), Jasmine R. Hoover

Library Research and Publications

GIS (Geographic Information System) libraries face challenges at both ends of the spectrum when it comes to acquiring GIS data. On one hand, the increase in popularity of GIS driven by services like Google Earth, Bing maps, and open data has made large amounts of GIS data freely available to users. On the other hand, specialty GIS data products, often needed by researchers, industry, and government, can be so costly that they are impossible for a library to purchase on its own. In situations like the latter, collaborations often provide the solution for acquiring the necessary GIS data. This report …

Study Shows Scales Of Justice Askew When It Comes To Death Penalty, John J. Donohue Jan 2012

Study Shows Scales Of Justice Askew When It Comes To Death Penalty, John J. Donohue

John Donohue

A former Yale Law School professor's long-running study now concludes that while extremely rare, the death penalty is a largely random punishment that often hangs on the accused's race and where in Connecticut the crime took place. John Donohue, now at Stanford University, looked at the application of the death penalty between 1973 and 2007, examining and rating 205 cases during a period when 4,686 murders occurred in the state.

Are Marginalized Women Being Left Behind? A Population Based Study Of Institutional Births In Rural India, Paul Adamson, Karl Krupp, Bhavana Niranjankumar, Alexandra H. Freeman, Mudassir Khan, Purnima Madhivanan

Department of Epidemiology

Background

While India has made significant progress in reducing maternal mortality, attaining further declines will require increased skilled birth attendance and institutional delivery among marginalized and difficult to reach populations.

Methods

A population-based survey was carried out among 16 randomly selected rural villages in rural Mysore District in Karnataka, India between August and September 2008. All households in selected villages were enumerated and women with children 6 years of age or younger underwent an interviewer-administered questionnaire on antenatal care and institutional delivery.

Results

Institutional deliveries in rural areas of Mysore District increased from 51% to 70% between 2002 and 2008. …

Teaching With Twitter: A Collaborative Experiment Using Twitter In The Classroom, Brian Vetruba, Makiba Foster, Kristina Kleutghen Jan 2012

Teaching With Twitter: A Collaborative Experiment Using Twitter In The Classroom, Brian Vetruba, Makiba Foster, Kristina Kleutghen

University Libraries Presentations

In a world where social media are becoming part of our daily existence in a variety of ways, Twitter is making inroads as a method for engaging students. In fact, a recent study published in the Journal of Computer Assisted Learning found a higher rate of student engagement with faculty and course material--as well as better grades—among students who were Twitter users. Kristina, Makiba, and Brian will describe a collaborative experiment in integrating Twitter into two Art History courses in the fall of 2011. They will share lessons learned and engage participants in a discussion of best practices for using …

Crises, Tensions, And Contradictions, Timothy Dimuzio Jan 2012

Crises, Tensions, And Contradictions, Timothy Dimuzio

Timothy DiMuzio

The themes of Part III involve the social consequences of financial crises, new forms of flexible accumulation, the constitution of global labor regimes, deepening processes of commodification associated with sex trafficking and the informal arrangements and legal orders that sanction their existence. A common thread is that a more disciplinary neo-liberal world order corresponds with more precarious forms of social reproduction, intensified exploitation and human insecurity. This is a world where, for example, Gandhi’s ethical imperative to provide security to the most vulnerable is far too frequently, perhaps increasingly, ignored.

The 'Art' Of Colonization: Capitalizing Sovereign Power And The Ongoing Nature Of Primitive Accumulation, Timothy Dimuzio Jan 2012

The 'Art' Of Colonization: Capitalizing Sovereign Power And The Ongoing Nature Of Primitive Accumulation, Timothy Dimuzio

Timothy DiMuzio

In order to dispel Adam Smith’s liberal narrative of original accumulation, Karl Marx offered his own historical account of the rise of capitalism in England. He also pointed to the English colonies, where the conditions for capitalist development were being created by government intervention in his own era.1 Playing on the discussion of the ‘art of colonisation’ in Edward Gibbon Wakefield’s comparative study of England and America, Marx argued that Wakefield’s candid advice on colonial policy and prosperity revealed the shaky foundations upon which Adam Smith’s concept of original accumulation was built. According to Marx, the value of Wakefield’s work …

Governing Global Slums: The Biopolitics Of Target 11, Timothy Dimuzio Jan 2012

Governing Global Slums: The Biopolitics Of Target 11, Timothy Dimuzio

Timothy DiMuzio

Recent literature has focused on the ways in which civil society organizations are contributing to practices of global governance in an era of neoliberalism. As UN Habitat has pointed out, what has also coincided with the shift to neoliberalism is the proliferation and growth of global slums. As slums have become an increasingly widespread form of human settlement, a global campaign to improve the life of slum dwellers has emerged under the Millennium Development Goals. In this article, I argue that this project can be conceived of as a biopolitical campaign where nongovernmental and community-based organizations are viewed as a …

The Real Resource Curse And The Imperialism Of Development, Timothy Dimuzio Jan 2012

The Real Resource Curse And The Imperialism Of Development, Timothy Dimuzio

Timothy DiMuzio

The idea that the scope of anthropology in the face of the new development economics be widened is a welcome one. In explaining what has been called ‘the resource curse’, Gisa Weszkalnys (in this issue) suggests that anthropologists must go beyond merely looking for the social details that might help economists account for why their theories often go awry in real social settings. In other words, the role of the anthropologist is not to provide social justifications for economic models gone wrong. Rather, Weszkalnys asks anthropologists concerned with studying communities with coveted and valuable world resources to approach their study …

Silencing The Sovereignty Of The Poor In Haiti, Timothy Dimuzio Jan 2012

Silencing The Sovereignty Of The Poor In Haiti, Timothy Dimuzio

Timothy DiMuzio

This chapter is animated by the idea that to write about the silencing of human rights -at least since the Middle Ages -we must try to appreciate how rights have historically been defined in relation to sovereign power and the defence of sovereign authority. With this relation in mind, this chapter sets out to critically investigate the state of non-right imposed on the majority of Haitians and how in doing so, powerful social forces have acted to silence the interests and political aspirations of those on the margins of Haitian society. Here, a state of non-right does not necessarily refer …
