Wikipedia's style of collaborative production has been lauded, lambasted, and satirized. Despite unease over its implications for the character (and quality) of knowledge, Wikipedia has brought us closer than ever to a realization of the centuries-old pursuit of a universal encyclopedia. Good Faith Collaboration: The Culture of Wikipedia is a rich ethnographic portrayal of Wikipedia's historical roots, collaborative culture, and much debated legacy.
[Review Of The Book British Labour History, 1815-1914], George R. Boyer
[Review Of The Book British Labour History, 1815-1914], George R. Boyer
George R. Boyer
[Excerpt] One of the most important issues in economic history is the effect of industrialization on workers' living standards and on the development of labor movements and class consciousness. Because Great Britain was the first nation to industrialize, the British workers have been a favorite topic among economic and social historians. Until now, however, there have been no textbooks covering all aspects of British labor history. E. H. Hunt has admirably filled this gap. His book deals with practically every topic of interest concerning British workers from the end of the Napoleonic Wars to the beginning of World War I.

[Review Of The Book The Idea Of Poverty: England In The Early Industrial Age], George R. Boyer
George R. Boyer
[Excerpt] One must have some knowledge of a society's conception of poverty in order to understand the existence of differing methods of poor relief over time and place. In The Idea of Poverty, Gertrude Himmelfarb presents a detailed account of England's poverty problem during the years 1750 to 1850 as seen by contemporary English economists, politicians, journalists, and novelists. She attempts to determine why the image of poverty, and of the poor, changed over those years and how the popular image of the poor influenced society's methods of relieving poverty. The result is a book that anyone concerned with the …

[Review Of The Book Interwar Unemployment In International Perspective], George R. Boyer
George R. Boyer
[Excerpt] The book redresses two imbalances in the recent literature on interwar unemployment: its almost exclusive focus on the United States and Britain, and its predominantly macroeconomic nature. To achieve these goals, the editors encouraged the authors of the country studies to address a set of microeconomic issues, including the extent to which the incidence and duration of unemployment varied across economic and demographic groups, and the effect of unemployment on labor force participation and poverty. Two macroeconomic issues also are addressed in several of the papers: the effects of real wages and of unemployment insurance on unemployment. These two …

Over the last million years, human language has emerged and evolved as a fundamental instrument of social communication and semiotic representation. People use language in part to convey emotional information, leading to the central and contingent questions: (1) What is the emotional spectrum of natural language? and (2) Are natural languages neutrally, positively, or negatively biased? Here, we report that the human-perceived positivity of over 10,000 of the most frequently used English words exhibits a clear positive bias. More deeply, we characterize and quantify distributions of word positivity for four large and distinct corpora, demonstrating that their form is broadly …

As a result of emerging technologies, courses on digital content creation have been offered at library and information science programs in different countries. Each program presents unique considerations based on its own academic environment; campus expectations and demands; professional development; as well as standards of national education reform. The digital content creation courses are often related to the topics of digital humanities, institutional repositories, digital scholarship, digital archives, learning technologies, and information services. The purpose of this panel is to discuss the current development of those courses, share the best practice strategies, and identify issues for future development from an …

The Effect Of Detraining On Muscle Strength And Cross-Sectional Area Following Unilateral Resistance Training, Herbert Groeller, John Sampson
John Sampson
Muscle strength appears well preserved following short periods of detraining, despite a decline in muscle cross-sectional area and muscle activation. PURPOSE: This study determined the effect a 12-week unilateral elbow flexor resistance training regimen followed by 8 weeks of detraining on muscle cross-sectional area, muscle activation, and dynamic and static strength in trained and non-exercising contralateral limbs. METHODS: Ten males volunteered for the investigation and completed a 4-week pre-treatment training period (50-80%1RM) prior to commencing the experimental resistance training regimen. Subjects attended 3 sessions per week over 12 weeks of experimental training wherein they exercised at 85%1RM. Each subjects trained …

The Effect Of Elbow Flexion Speed And Partial Limb Occlusion On Emg Activity, John Sampson, Herbert Groeller, Darryl Mcandrew, R Achttien, J Stege
John Sampson
This investigation aimed to determine the neuromuscular response of the bicep brachii during heavy (6RM) dynamic resistance exercise performed to volitional exhaustion. Electromyographic (EMG) activity was compared in twelve male subjects performing dominant-limb elbow flexion exercise during four conditions: i) Explosive concentric and eccentric (SSC); ii) Explosive concentric, control eccentric (EC); iii) control (C); and iv) control with limb occlusion (CO) (110mmHg). CO and SSC are reported to increase motor unit activity when compared to control exercise (2 second flexion, 2 second extension). It was hypothesised that EMG activity will be higher in conditions of explosive exercise. Surface EMG activity …

Gender, Power And Justice: An Ethnographic Study Of A Union Parishad-Led Arbitration Councils In Rural Bangladesh, Zahidul Islam Biswas
Dr. Zahidul Islam
In 2012, I obtained my PhD degree from the Centre for the Study of Law and Governance, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, India, for my thesis entitled ‘Gender, Power and Justice: An Ethnographic Study of a Union Parishad-led Arbitration Councils in Rural Bangladesh’. This study explores the gender and power aspects in the decision making in a rural justice system in Bangladesh, which has a great impact on the lives of the poor and disadvantaged rural population of the country. Here is chapter six of the thesis, which contains the summary and conclusions of the study. Readers and scholars may …

MSU Libraries Reports
The Center for Social Sciences and Public Policy Research (CSSPPR) at Missouri State University was contracted by the Duane Meyer Library at Missouri State University to conduct a survey of MSU students and faculty concerning their use of and preference for library services. Separate online instruments were used for each of the two sample groups. In this study the CSSPPR measured the responses of a random sample of 266 MSU students and 60 MSU faculty members. Questions focused on the use of various library services and asked respondents to indicate their preferences for particular services. This report summarizes dominant trends …

The Alabama Crimson Tide football team is now officially the BCS National Field Goal Champion. This was achieved despite the fact that the Tide did score a touchdown in the waning moments of the game and then watched their kicker miss the extra point. The Alabama coach, Nick Saban, must have been quite proud of this achievement, as it obliterated the loss to LSU in the Field Goal contest of November to determine which team was number one in the nation at that point in the season.
