Clark County Community Health Assessment, Center For Urban And Public Affairs, Wright State University

Public Health

The 2012 Clark County Community Health Assessment consists of a telephone survey of 1,053 Clark County adults. The primary purpose of the survey of adults is to evaluate the health status of residents, establish public health priorities, and identify baseline measures for establishing public health program outcomes.

The assessment is based upon questions from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) survey conducted annually by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as well as community health assessments conducted by neighboring communities and priority health needs within the county. The assessment addresses access to and utilization of health care; …

For this study, CUPA used IMPLAN, a tool for economic impact assessment to estimate the direct, indirect, and induced impacts of the $84 million1 Proton facility construction project and operations on the regional economy (Montgomery, Greene, Preble and Miami counties).

Resident Identification Using Kinect Depth Image Data And Fuzzy Clustering Techniques, Tanvi Banerjee, James M. Keller, Marjorie Skubic

Kno.e.sis Publications

As a part of our passive fall risk assessment research in home environments, we present a method to identify older residents using features extracted from their gait information from a single depth camera. Depth images have been collected continuously for about eight months from several apartments at a senior housing facility. Shape descriptors such as bounding box information and image moments were extracted from silhouettes of the depth images. The features were then clustered using Possibilistic C Means for resident identification. This technology will allow researchers and health professionals to gather more information on the individual residents by filtering out …

Perceived Psychological Distance In Leader-Subordinate And Teacher-Student Relationships, Charles L. Lewis Iv

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The purpose of this conceptual paper is two pronged; first it surveys the current research literature on perceived psychological and physical distance and its relationship to leader-subordinate interaction and job performance. Secondly, the review suggests that the phenomenon of perceived distance also applies to the teacher-student relationship and school performance. A synthesis of the literature and suggestions for future research are also presented.

Libraries And General Education: New Strategies To Enhance Freshman Orientation, Faculty Collaboration, And Curriculum Development, Carl R. Andrews Jan 2012

Libraries And General Education: New Strategies To Enhance Freshman Orientation, Faculty Collaboration, And Curriculum Development, Carl R. Andrews

Publications and Research

My research will attempt to re-evaluate the academic library's role in supporting a general education program. The emphasis will focus on student centeredness, faculty collaboration, outreach and curriculum support. In the short time that I have worked in academic libraries I have learned that quality customer service and reference desk work is far from the list of priorities in some settings. Coming from the public library I found this to be unacceptable. We are service providers and the way in which we communicate with students and faculty is important. As professionals we should do more in the way of making …

The Mismangement Of Marital Disclosures In The Real Housewives Of Beverly Hills, Randi Cariella Campbell Jan 2012

The Mismangement Of Marital Disclosures In The Real Housewives Of Beverly Hills, Randi Cariella Campbell

Theses and Dissertations--Communication

Reality television is unique from other television programming because its format is less scripted than typical entertainment television programs, but not as candid as documentary style shows. Aspects of cast members’ private lives are publicly aired as “real.” The consequences for airing one’s private life in the public sphere are unclear. This may be especially important to study when the private disclosures reveal activities that may be unethical, immoral, illegal, or abusive. Petronio’s (date) communication privacy management theory was used to examine the martial disclosures that occurred between Taylor and Russell Armstrong, cast members of the reality television show The …

Environmental Scan Of Off-Site Reference In Academic Libraries, Penny Scott, Elizabeth Stephan Jan 2012

Environmental Scan Of Off-Site Reference In Academic Libraries, Penny Scott, Elizabeth Stephan

Gleeson Library Faculty and Staff Research and Scholarship

Taking library services outside of the library seems to be a growing trend in academic libraries, but is it really? In 2011 Stephan and Scott conducted an online survey of academic libraries to measure how and if off-site reference is being utilized in academic libraries in order to provide a snapshot of current and past off-site reference trends. Broken down into four sections, the poster will look at the four questions asked of survey participants:

  • · Those who currently hold off-site reference hours
  • · Those held off-site reference hours in the past but stopped

Data Note: Growth In Community-Based Non-Work, Jean Winsor, John Butterworth Jan 2012

Data Note: Growth In Community-Based Non-Work, Jean Winsor, John Butterworth

Data Note Series, Institute for Community Inclusion

Understanding the role of community-based non-work (CBNW) services is complex. While different data sources suggest different levels of investment, there is consistent evidence that the service is being used more frequently. The number of states reporting that they provide CBNW services on the IDD Agency Survey grew from 18 in FY1996 to 30 in FY2010. Nationally, the reported participation in CBNW services has grown steadily for states that report it as a service, from 18.7% in FY1999 to 47% in FY2010.

CBNW services also accounted for 57.7% of state IDD (Intellectual and Developmental Disability) agency expenditures for FY2010, for states …

Brief 3: Clustering Assessment: Enhancing Synergies Among Multilateral Environmental Agreements, Judith Wehrli

Against the background of a widely fragmented and diluted international environmental governance architecture, different reform options are currently being discussed. This issue brief considers whether streamlining international environmental regimes by grouping or ‘clustering’ international agreements could improve effectiveness and efficiency. It outlines the general idea of the clustering approach, draws lessons from the chemicals and waste cluster and examines the implications and potentials of clustering multilateral environmental agreements.

A system delivering weather details via short message service (SMS) to farmers in Kenya makes use of traditional and modern forecasting methods, alerting them to periods of heavy rain or drought. The IGAD Climate Prediction and Applications Centre (ICPAC), a climate research institute representing seven east African countries, is working on a system using cell phones to help farmers address the negative impacts of climate change. The new system makes use of the Nganyi's traditional forecasting techniques combined with data from the Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD). KMD staff compile the resulting information and enter it into a database. The information …
