Exposing Whiteness In Higher Education: White Male College Students Minimizing Racism, Claiming Victimization, And Recreating White Supremacy, Nolan L. Cabrera
Exposing Whiteness In Higher Education: White Male College Students Minimizing Racism, Claiming Victimization, And Recreating White Supremacy, Nolan L. Cabrera
Nolan L. Cabrera
This research critically examines racial views and experiences of 12 white men in a single higher education institution via semi-structured interviews. Participants tended to utilize individualized definitions of racism and experience high levels of racial segregation in both their pre-college and college environments. This corresponded to participants seeing little evidence of racism, minimizing the power of contemporary racism, and framing whites as the true victims of multiculturalism (i.e. ‘reverse racism’). This sense of racial victimization corresponded to the participants blaming racial minorities for racial antagonism (both on campus and society as a whole), which cyclically served to rationalize the persistence …

Individualizam I Demokratska Država, Roozbeh (Rudy) B. Baker
Individualizam I Demokratska Država, Roozbeh (Rudy) B. Baker
Roozbeh (Rudy) B. Baker

Visualizing Qur’Anic Words With Parallel Plot, Raja Jamilah Raja Yusof Dr
Raja Jamilah Raja Yusof Dr
Parallel plot is a relatively new type of plot in comparison to scatter plot. The aim of this paper is to find out the effectiveness of parallel plot visualization in comparison to the scatter plot for novice users. Comparison through literature shows that parallel and scatter plot visualization techniques offer similar visualization features. A study was conducted based on the parallel plot in Parallel Coordinate for the Qur’an (PaCQ) interface using a relational model, Goals Operators Methods and Selection Rules (GOMS) analysis and user performance evaluation. Based on the GOMS analysis, the subtasks and operation time involved in exploring data …

Aspects Of Exchangeability In The Shapley Value, R K. Amit, Parthasarathy Ramachandran
R K Amit
This paper characterizes the aspects of exchangeability in the Shapley value. We show that, in the Shapley value, each player’s prospects of joining a t-player game as the last member of the game is a moment sequence of the uniform distribution. We prove that, with finite exchangeability, the Shapley value is the only value in which the probability assignment is a unique mixture of independent and identically distributed probabilities. We also derive the Shapley value using the de Finetti’s theorem.

Turkey's Syria Problem: A Talking Timeline Of Events, Zenonas Tziarras
Zenonas Tziarras
This article analyzes the stages of the Syrian crisis’ escalation and the various Turkish reactions. Each stage of Turkey’s management of the crisis reveals certain features of its foreign policy. By examining its reactions throughout the crisis we can observe the gap between the capabilities and aspirations of Turkish foreign policy. The result is a “talking timeline of events” which shows that the Syrian crisis has been a “reality check” for Turkey.
Post-Citizens United: Using Shareholder Derivative Claims Of Corporate Waste To Challenge Corporate Independent Political Expenditures, William Alan Nelson Ii
Post-Citizens United: Using Shareholder Derivative Claims Of Corporate Waste To Challenge Corporate Independent Political Expenditures, William Alan Nelson Ii
William Alan Nelson II
The Supreme Court’s recent decision in Citizens United v. FEC allows companies to spend unlimited sums from their treasuries on advertisements that promote or oppose political candidates. This issue has taken the main stage in American politics, especially with the current Republican primary race and the Presidential election in November. This article discusses how shareholders may use derivative claims of corporate waste to challenge independent political expenditures that they believe are detrimental to the corporation. The article begins by discussing the history of the corporate waste doctrine and looks at the standard for pleading a claim of corporate waste. The …

Coöperaties In België. Profielschets 2005-2010, Wim Van Opstal
Wim Van Opstal

Today’s net-generation college students were weaned on multimedia, regularly viewing, sharing and loading video with YouTube and other social networking sites. At University of Southern California (USC), students across curriculum are producing video for their assignments and class assignments. Faculty in diverse disciplines now assigns projects requiring some manner of video feed. Not surprisingly, we’re seeing universities across the nation considering video production and related skill sets as part of their undergraduate core curricula. Today’s growing digital environment, new education programs are merging traditional information and research skills with IT fluency, digital and multimedia literacies demanding more-and-more knowledge of emerging …

Child Labor And International Trade, Woody R. Clermont

Advocates of laissez-faire claim that without market restrictions, the equilibrium reached will be economically and thus Pareto efficient under the first fundamental welfare theorem; by contrast, these same advocates contend that an equilibrium allocation under a child-labor ban results in a worsening to welfare. Typically coupled with a ban will be a child education law, which will increase government spending, yet not be welfare improving relative to the laissez-faire equilibrium and which will distort the market. In this sense, mandatory education results in higher human capital and lower wage inequality. This has the odd effect of increasing the wages of …

Comparative Case Studies Of Rent-Seeking In China’S State-Owned Enterprises: The Ministry Of Railway And China Mobile, Wendy Qian
Wendy Qian
The problem of rent-seeking in China’s state-owned enterprises has worsened since the rapid increase in infrastructure investment, such as telecom and railway. State-owned enterprise reform in China has given licensing power to officials and executives without sufficient checks and balances. The Chinese government plans to introduce corporate governance structures and encourage private investment for the previously state-dominated industries, such as the railway industry, in the next decade. Yet these formalities cannot eradicate the political problem of corruption. This thesis will examine rent-seeking through the case studies of China Mobile’s former deputy general manager and Communist Party secretary Zhang Chunjiang’s patronage …

Mean And Variance Responsive Learning, Carlos Oyarzun, Rajiv Sarin

A learning rule is variance-averse if the expected reduced-distribution of payoffs in the next period has a smaller variance than that of the current reduced-distribution, in every set where all the actions provide the same expected payoff. A learning rule is monotonically variance-averse if it is expected to add probability to the set of actions that have the smallest variance in the set, when all the actions have the same expected payoff. A learning rule is monotonically mean-variance-averse if it is expected to add probability to the set of actions that have the highest expected payoff and smallest variance whenever …
