Providing Maternal And Newborn Health Services: Experiences Of Auxiliary Nurse Midwives In Rajasthan, K.G. Santhya, Shireen J. Jejeebhoy
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
To better understand the experiences of auxiliary nurse-midwives (ANMs) in providing maternal and newborn health services and to obtain their perspectives on Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY), the Population Council undertook an exploratory study of ANMs in two districts of the north-western state of Rajasthan, India. Findings show that the vast majority of the ANMs were aware of best practices related to the immediate care of the newborn. Nevertheless, the findings also suggested a number of priority areas for action, including increased investment in training, encouraging provision of services on a more regular basis, making special efforts to enable ANMs to …

The Relationship Between Married Partners' Individual And Relationship Distress: An Actor-Partner Analysis Of Low-Income, Racially And Ethnically Diverse Couples In Relationship Education, Matthew D. Munyon
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Couples experiencing relationship distress often require professional help, such as counseling and couple and relationship education (CRE). Research recently discovered that among couples in counseling, a circular relationship exists between individual and relationship distress-stress begets stress. Until this study, a similar examination had not been conducted among couples selecting CRE. This study examined the relationship between individual and relationship distress among married couples that had children, were from predominantly low-income and racially and ethnically diverse backgrounds, and selected CRE. A correlational research design was employed and framed in the social interdependence theory. The actor-partner interdependence model was conducted within a …

Are You My Profession?: Mentoring, Organizational Citizenship, And Professional Identity, Julia M. Fullick
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of the current study was to investigate the influence that academic major advisors and informal mentors can have on an individual's identification with a professional organization and their ensuing level of involvement in that professional organization. The present study is unique in that it is among the few to examine mentoring and OCBs in the context of a voluntary professional organization. Participants were 309 individuals with a doctoral degree who are members of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP), a large professional organization with 7,847 total members (in 2011). The specific type of OCB investigated in …
Wittgensteinian Support For Domain Analysis In Classification, Andrew Wesolek
Wittgensteinian Support For Domain Analysis In Classification, Andrew Wesolek
Library Faculty & Staff Publications
Hjorland contends that in order to further the goal of linking researchers to relevant information ‘domain analysis’ should be used in concept classification. He thinks that concept classification should not strive to classify on the basis of the properties of objects, but rather on descriptions of objects that are loosely derived from human activity and social negotiation. Currently, most information scientists operate under a ‘positivist’ view of concept classification, which, Hjorland maintains, mistakenly strives for universal classification schema while muddling the comprehension of individual researchers. Though he tends to include Wittgenstein in the positivist camp for classification, Hjorland’s domain analysis …

South Carolina Naval Wreck Survey, Christopher F. Amer
Presentations
From 1998 through 2003, the Maritime Research Division (MRD) of the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology (SCIAA) at the University of South Carolina (USC) conducted research into the presence of US Navy shipwrecks in South Carolina waters. The US Navy claimed 96 shipwrecks in the state. However, historical research confirmed that, in fact, only 47 Navy-owned vessels met their demise in state waters. The remaining shipwrecks include, US Army transports, vessels owned by the Confederacy at the time of their sinking, and a number of vessels that flew foreign flags. The United States Navy maintained a presence in South Carolina …

Human Security And The Asean Charter: Perspectives And Challenges, Kasira Cheeppensook, Vira Somboon
Human Security And The Asean Charter: Perspectives And Challenges, Kasira Cheeppensook, Vira Somboon
Asian Review
This article explores the relevance of the concept of human security in ASEAN within the context of the development of the ASEAN Charter. Human security is a relatively new norm in ASEAN. It entered dialogue at the ASEAN level only recently, and has been discussed ever since. However, the ASEAN Charter does not mention human security despite its explicit codification of human rights, another human-centric norm. This explores the "meaning" of human security that ASEAN seems to share, and compares it with the meaning held by the UN and its organs. The article notes the different perceptions of comprehensive security, …

Thai Foreign Direct Investment And Human Security Implications: A Case Study Of The Xayaburi Dam In Lao Pdr, Naruemon Thabchumpon, Carl Middleton
Asian Review
The Xayaburi Dam is a 1,260 megawatts project proposed to be built on the Mekong River's mainstream in Xayaburi Province, Lao PDR. The projects lead developer is the Thai construction company Ch. Karnchang, the proposed financiers are Thai commercial banks, and 95 percent of the electricity generated would be exported to Thailand. This paper determines how the Xayaburi Dam could affect human security at the regional scale and in the locality of the project, and evaluates the extent to which decision-making through the intergovernmental Mekong River Commission and the energy planning process in Thailand has accounted for these potential changes …
A Refugee-Centered Perspective On Refugee Protection Mechanisms: The Case Of The Lao Hmong Refugees In Thailand, My Lo, Vira Somboon
A Refugee-Centered Perspective On Refugee Protection Mechanisms: The Case Of The Lao Hmong Refugees In Thailand, My Lo, Vira Somboon
Asian Review
Refugees are people seeking for stability and security in their life which the government of their own country failed to provide them. In many countries refugees are still treated as illegal migrants and are not granted the protection that they need to pursue a secure life with dignity. Failing to protect asylum seekers is a threat to human security and this problem should be addressed in the public sphere. Thailand has adopted many waves of refugees from neighboring countries but refugees who seek asylum in Thailand have never had the protection they deserve from the Thai authorities. The case of …

Social Welfare Of Burmese Refugees And Human Security, Naruemon Thabchumpon
Asian Review
This paper investigates the social welfare and social security situation of Burmese refugees1 living in temporary shelters along the Thai-Myanmar border. The study applies the human security framework and right to education framework to analyze findings from both documentary and field research in order to examine the accessibility and availability of existing welfare services, as well as to identify the potential implications and the sustainability of access to local Thai education, health, and judicial services of these refugees in the future. Overall, the paper argues that under the human security framework finding sustainable solutions to the current protracted situation may …

The year 2012 was an important one for UNMAS. Delivering on its commitment, UNMAS has successfully led and completed the United Nations Mine Action Strategy, which was endorsed, last December, by the heads of United Nations entities active in mine action. This was a welcome reaffirmation of UNMAS leadership and coordination role. Simultaneously, my counterparts entrusted UNMAS with the responsibility of establishing, hosting and operating the United Nations Monitoring and Evaluation Mechanism for Mine Action, a commitment to accountability and transparency that I wholeheartedly support. The Secretary-General appointed a new Director, the first woman to occupy this post, who immediately …

Book Review Of Civic Discipline: Geography In America, 1860–1890 By Karen M. Morin, Christina E. Dando
Geography and Geology Faculty Publications
Karen Morin's Civic Discipline: Geography in America, 1860–1890 examines nineteenth-century American geography practices outside of academia and the contributions of Charles P. Daly, New York judge and American Geographical Society (AGS) president. Daly was not an academic geographer yet had tremendous influence over public geographic knowledge, impacting the actions of many actors on many stages. Civic Discipline is not a biography but rather “a sociology of Charles Daly's geography—a social geography,” illuminating an area frequently ignored in geography's history: the ways in which Daly and the AGS impacted the American geographical imagination (p. 3).

Trade, Transportation, And Freight Mobility: Invest Now Or Pay Later?, Eric Jessup
Institute of Portland Metropolitan Studies Publications
An efficient multi-modal transportation system that out-performs other international gateway cities will provide a regional. competitive advantage. Achieving this goal requires a strategic plan and a concerted effort based upon access to accurate, timely, relevant data and investment prioritization that maximizes efficient utilization of limited resources. Once a plan is developed, the public must buy-in, a process that involves an educational and information exchange function where public-private benefits are enumerated, understood, and presented to voters, legislative bodies, lobbyist, and state policymakers in a clear, convincing manner. This process applies any time in history but is especially important given the current …

Talent, Place, And Prosperity: Metro Portland's Changing Labor Market And Economic Outlook, Joseph Cortright
Institute of Portland Metropolitan Studies Publications
After three years of a sluggish national economy, it looks as if we may be poised to grow again. Although the Portland economy benefited mightily from the boom of the 19905, it was harder hit than the nation as ? whole during the 2001 recession and the "job-loss" recovery that followed. What is the outlook for growth in the region in the years ahead? In particular, how will our labor market influence growth opportunities? This article examines changes in national and local labor markets and the role of migration in shaping Portland's economic opportunities. It identifies some key challenges and …

Training Manual On The Use Of Magnesium Sulphate In The Management Of Severe Pre-Eclampsia And Eclampsia [Trainee Version], Federal Ministry Of Health, Population Council
Reproductive Health
This training manual provides detailed, descriptive, and practical instructions and tips necessary to respond to obstetric emergencies (severe pre-eclampsia and eclampsia). The manual is an integral part of the collaborative efforts between the Federal Ministry of Health and the MacArthur Foundation to scale up the use of magnesium sulphate in the management of severe pre-eclampsia and eclampsia in Nigerian health facilities. Magnesium sulphate has been established as the gold standard in the management of severe pre-eclampsia and eclampsia, but lack of knowledge and necessary skill have been identified as some of the factors responsible for its limited use in Nigeria. …
Volume 4: Cosmopolitanisms In Muslim Contexts : Perspectives From The Past, Derryl N. Maclean, Sikeena Karmali Ahmed
Volume 4: Cosmopolitanisms In Muslim Contexts : Perspectives From The Past, Derryl N. Maclean, Sikeena Karmali Ahmed
Exploring Muslim Contexts
Cosmopolitanism is a key concept in social and political thought, standing in opposition to closed human group ideologies such as tribalism, nationalism and fundamentalism. Much recent discussion of this concept has been situated within Western self-perceptions, with little inclusion of information from Muslim contexts.
This volume redresses the balance by focusing attention on instances in world history when cosmopolitan ideas and actions pervaded specific Muslim societies and cultures, exploring the tensions between regional cultures, isolated enclaves and modern nation-states. Models are chosen from four geographic areas: The Swahili coast, the Ottoman empire/Turkey, Iran and Indo-Pakistan.
