Identification Of Differences Between Information Communicated By Text Messaging And Voice Message On Feedback, Nicholas Simpson
Identification Of Differences Between Information Communicated By Text Messaging And Voice Message On Feedback, Nicholas Simpson
Online Theses and Dissertations
This study examined the modifying effect of communication via voice or text on a cellular phone as it relates to the effects of feedback on future performance, self-efficacy, and perceived face validity. Previous literature has established an effect of positive feedback enhancing future performance and self-efficacy, and negative feedback decreasing future performance and self-efficacy, but no research currently exists on how this effect can be modified by method of delivery over cellular phone. This study examined the effect of positive and negative feedback by having participants complete self-efficacy, face validity, and performance measures. The participants then received positive or negative …
The Rhetorical Criteria Of Kennedy's Camelot, Stacy Fawn Wilder
The Rhetorical Criteria Of Kennedy's Camelot, Stacy Fawn Wilder
Online Theses and Dissertations
John F. Kennedy's presidential rhetoric reflects key criteria necessary for creating and sustaining the American Camelot myth. That myth was successfully ingrained within the American psyche through the use of visual rhetoric, campaign speech rhetoric, and crisis time rhetoric. Moreover, the collective memory of cultural trauma following Kennedy's assassination suggests a promising continuation of the Camelot myth. Because the four rhetorical categories (visual, campaign, crisis, and collective memory) worked in tandem, all were essential for creating Kennedy's legacy.
Civilian Aviation Screening: A Time-Series Analysis Of Confiscated Firearms At Screening Checkpoints, Shon Agard
Civilian Aviation Screening: A Time-Series Analysis Of Confiscated Firearms At Screening Checkpoints, Shon Agard
Online Theses and Dissertations
This study investigated the aviation screening process and sought to determine if the federalization of the screening process had any effect on the number of firearm confiscations at civilian aviation screening checkpoints. The hypothesis of the study was that airport screening firearms confiscations (per one million screenings) were lower before the U.S. government (TSA) took over screening in 2001-2002. This quantitative research required the performance of an interrupted time series analysis. Interrupted time series analysis evaluates the impact of one or more events on the values in the time series. An interrupted time series analysis attempts to determine whether an …
Preliminary Validation Of The Childhood Autism Rating Scale - Second Edition Questionnaire For Parents Or Caregivers (Cars2-Qpc) And The Gilliam Autism Rating Scale (Gars-2) With A Chinese-Speaking Population, Nannan Li
Online Theses and Dissertations
Autism is a neurobiological disorder that is diagnosed through careful behavioral assessment in early childhood. Appropriate measurement of autism is essential for determining appropriate intervention strategies. Whereas, there are only a limited autism measures available for use in China. For this reason, valid and reliable measures of autism for use with Chinese speaking individuals are of critical importance. The purpose of the present study is to begin the process of developing two measures of autism for use with Chinese speaking individuals.
The development of the measures of autism with Chinese speaking population was started by translating the Questionnaire for Parents …
The Scale For Existential Thinking, Blake A. Allan, Branton Shearer
The Scale For Existential Thinking, Blake A. Allan, Branton Shearer
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
This study introduced the construct of existential thinking, which we defined as the tendency
to explore the fundamental concerns of human existence and the capacity to engage in a
meaning-making process that locates oneself in respect to these issues. We also assessed
the psychometric properties of the 11-item “Scale for Existential Thinking” (SET). In two
studies, we found the SET to have unidimensional factor structure and good reliability
diagnostics in both student and adult samples. Moreover, the SET showed construct validity
by correlating with meaning in life, curiosity, and other existential variables. Furthermore,
we found meaning in life to mediate …

Transpersonal Psychology, Parapsychology, And Neurobiology: Clarifying Their Relations, Douglas A. Macdonald, Harris L. Friedman
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
Neurobiological advances have resulted in growing interest in many psychological phenomena
heretofore resistant to scientific scrutiny, including within transpersonal psychology and
parapsychology. These advances perhaps can resolve longstanding tensions between these
two psychological subdisciplines, which have generally been treated as disparate. To
implement such a rapprochement requires more than just additional empirical findings,
as theoretical development is also needed. Consequently, we identify some important
theoretical problems, such as conventional assumptions about scientific naturalism and
materialism that potentially undermine substantive advances in further understanding
such phenomena through neurobiology. We also discuss links between parapsychology and
transpersonal psychology that can be forged …
Forensic Analysis Of Social Networking Applications On Mobile Devices, Noora Al Mutawa, Ibrahim Baggili, Andrew Marrington
Forensic Analysis Of Social Networking Applications On Mobile Devices, Noora Al Mutawa, Ibrahim Baggili, Andrew Marrington
Electrical & Computer Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications
The increased use of social networking applications on smartphones makes these devices a goldmine for forensic investigators. Potential evidence can be held on these devices and recovered with the right tools and examination methods. This paper focuses on conducting forensic analyses on three widely used social networking applications on smartphones: Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace. The tests were conducted on three popular smartphones: BlackBerrys, iPhones, and Android phones. The tests consisted of installing the social networking applications on each device, conducting common user activities through each application, acquiring a forensically sound logical image of each device, and performing manual forensic analysis …

Due to their usage increase worldwide, iPads are on the path of becoming key sources of digital evidence in criminal investigations. This research investigated the logical backup acquisition and examination of the iPad2 device using the Apple iTunes backup utility while manually examining the backup data (manual examination) and automatically parsing the backup data (Lantern software-automated examination). The results indicate that a manual examination of the logical backup structure from iTunes reveals more digital evidence, especially if installed application data is required for an investigation. However, the researchers note that if a quick triage is needed of an iOS device, then …

The article focuses on how school librarians could lead change in their schools. It states that some people do not want change because it is considered as a threat to familiar behavior. It says that in introducing change there should be a sense of urgency, a group that has the power to lead the change, communicate the vision of change. It adds that school librarians must consider all aspects including the involvement of principals, school staff, and the community.

Father Angel Torrellas And Leadership Through Music At Batahola Norte Center In Managua, Nicaragua, Carolyn Spargo
Theses and Graduate Projects
This study examines the leadership style Father Angel Torellas used through music education at the Batahola Norte Center in Managuo, Nicaragua. The Center was established in 1983 by Father Angel Torellas and Sister Margarite and built on donated property and private donations to teach music fundamentals through voice and instruments. Twenty-one former students of the Batahola Norte Center were invited to participate in an interview at the Center to give their input of how music education had an impact on their adult lives. Research questions were gathered and based on an earlier Doctoral Dissertation written by Robert Stacke, "The Emergence …

The Influence Of Odor And Emotion On Memory, Laura R. Shrode
The Influence Of Odor And Emotion On Memory, Laura R. Shrode
Psychology Student Work
Past research has suggested that there is a special neural connectivity between the olfactory cortex, amygdala and hippocampus that is related to the connection between smell, emotion and memory (Herz & Cupchik, 1995). This experiment looked at the differences in memory recognition and memory recall between conditions with a pleasant or unpleasant scent and a positive or negative emotional state. Intrusion errors were used to estimate connections between odor, emotion, and memory. Results found that intrusion errors were equally likely to occur between all sources, suggesting source confusion. However, the specific source of the confusion did not affect memory. These …

The Emergence Of A Standards Market: Multiplicity Of Sustainability Standards In The Global Coffee Industry, Juliane Reinecke, Stephan Manning, Oliver Von Hagen
Management and Marketing Faculty Publication Series
The growing number of voluntary standards for governing transnational arenas is presenting standards organizations with a problem. While claiming that they are pursuing shared, overarching objectives, at the same time, they are promoting their own respective standards that are increasingly similar. By developing the notion of ‘standards markets,’ this paper examines this tension and studies how different social movement and industry-driven standards organizations compete as well as collaborate over governance in transnational arenas. Based on an in-depth case study of sustainability standards in the global coffee industry, we find that the ongoing co-existence of multiple standards is being promoted by …

The Effects Of Distractors In Multiple Object Tracking Are Modulated By The Similarity Of Distractor And Target Features, Cary S. Feria
The Effects Of Distractors In Multiple Object Tracking Are Modulated By The Similarity Of Distractor And Target Features, Cary S. Feria
Cary S. Feria
Is the effect of distractors in multiple object tracking dependent on the distractors sharing the features of the targets? In experiment 1, observers tracked five targets among five distractors that were identical to the targets and a number of additional distractors that were either identical to or featurally distinct from the targets. Results showed that distractors that are distinct from the targets in shape or color, or are stationary, impair tracking less than distractors that are identical to the targets. However, tracking performance declined as the number of distractors increased, even for featurally distinct distractors. Experiment 2 showed that distractors …

Comparing Methods For Detecting Child Exploitation Content Online, Bryce Westlake, Martin Bouchard, Richard Frank
Bryce Garreth Westlake
The sexual exploitation of children online is seen as a global issue and has been addressed by both governments and private organizations. Efforts thus far have focused primarily on the use of image hash value databases to find content. However, recently researchers have begun to use keywords as a way to detect child exploitation content. Within the current study we explore both of these methodologies. Using a custom designed web-crawler, we create three networks using the hash value method, keywords method, and a hybrid method combining the first two. Results first show that the three million images found in our …

An Examination Of Women’S Representation And Participation In Bicycle Advisory Committees In California, Hilary Nixon, C. Deluca
An Examination Of Women’S Representation And Participation In Bicycle Advisory Committees In California, Hilary Nixon, C. Deluca
Hilary Nixon
In the United States, women bicycle at significantly lower rates than men. One method of remedying this disparity is to ensure that women are engaged in bicycle planning and policy making through, for example, participation in bicycle advisory committees (BACs). No research has been conducted on women’s representation and participation in these committees. This study attempts to fill that gap by examining women’s membership levels in and experiences serving on California bicycle advisory committees and bicycle/pedestrian advisory committees. In addition, we explore some of the barriers to participation faced by female cyclists. A survey of 42 committees revealed that women …
Some Possible Consequences Of A U.S. Government Default, Jeffrey Rogers Hummel
Some Possible Consequences Of A U.S. Government Default, Jeffrey Rogers Hummel
Jeffrey Rogers Hummel
The U.S. government faces a looming fiscal crisis. A default on Treasury securities appears inevitable. The short-run consequences for the economy will be painful. But the long-run consequences, both economic and political, could be beneficial. The most important long-run political benefit would be the imposition of fiscal discipline. The long-run economic benefit would be the alleviation of the future tax liabilities required to service the national debt, irrespective of whether those liabilities are correctly anticipated or not. A historical examination of the state government defaults of the 1840s provides one case study where the long-run consequences were indeed salutary.
