Family Members Interacting While Watching Television., Alla Tovares Dec 2011

Family Members Interacting While Watching Television., Alla Tovares

Alla V. Tovares

In this chapter, by focusing on a specific type of intertextual repetition, I demonstrate how the public and the private are intertwined moment-by-moment in family interaction. Considering the relationship between the public and the private as essentially dialogic helps to demonstrate that family discourse is not private per se; rather it is a complex combination of the public and the private. By incorporating elements of television texts into their discourse, family members blend the public and the private into a dialogic unity. This chapter also shows that television viewing is a key site for studying the interrelationship between the public …

Compromising The Safety Net: How Limiting Tax Deductions For High-Income Donors Could Undermine Charitable Organizations, Patrick Tolan Dec 2011

Compromising The Safety Net: How Limiting Tax Deductions For High-Income Donors Could Undermine Charitable Organizations, Patrick Tolan

Patrick E. Tolan Jr.

President Obama’s recent budget proposals have contemplated reducing the top rate for charitable deductions (and all itemized deductions) to twenty-eight percent. Because America’s largest donors are those in the highest marginal tax brackets, efforts to limit deductibility of charitable donations could have a chilling effect on charitable giving.

In this article the author looks at motivations for charitable donations and specifically at the impact of tax deductibility as a motivating factor. It takes a historical look at the philanthropic surveys and econometric models and examines empirical data concerning impacts of significant changes to the tax code in the 1980s that …

Student School Engagement Among Sexual Minority Students: Understanding The Contributors To Predicting Academic Outcomes, Kristie Seelman, N. Walls, Cynthia Hazel, Hope Wisneski Dec 2011

Student School Engagement Among Sexual Minority Students: Understanding The Contributors To Predicting Academic Outcomes, Kristie Seelman, N. Walls, Cynthia Hazel, Hope Wisneski

Kristie L Seelman

Hierarchical multiple regression is used to examine whether student school engagement predicts grade point average (GPA) and fear-based truancy among 315 sexual minority youth aged 13 to 24 years. Results indicate that student school engagement is a significant predictor of GPA, and this relationship is strongest in the presence of a gay–straight alliance. Having an adult ally at school is associated with a decrease in fear-based truancy, while student school engagement predicts a decrease in fear-based truancy only for youth who have higher levels of subjective fear at school. Implications for future research and for practice among school-based helping professionals …

Transfer And Translation Of Policy, Diane Stone Dec 2011

Transfer And Translation Of Policy, Diane Stone

Diane L Stone

The past two decades have seen a wealth of papers on policy diffusion and policy transfer. In the first half, this paper reviews some of the trends in the literature by looking backwards to the political science diffusion literature, and forwards to the expanding multi-disciplinary social science literatures on policy ‘learning’, ‘mobilities’ and ‘translation’ which qualify many of the rationalist assumptions of the early diffusion / transfer literatures. These studies stress the complexity of context that modifies exports of policy and the need for interpretation or experimentalism in the assemblage of policy. The second half of the paper focuses on …

Basil Bernstein's Theory Of The Pedagogic Device And Formal Music Schooling: Putting The Theory Into Practice, Ruth Wright, Hildegard Froehlich Dec 2011

Basil Bernstein's Theory Of The Pedagogic Device And Formal Music Schooling: Putting The Theory Into Practice, Ruth Wright, Hildegard Froehlich

Ruth Wright Dr

This article describes Basil Bernstein's theory of the pedagogic device as applied to school music instruction. Showing that educational practices are not personal choices alone, but the result of socio-political mandates, the article traces how education functions as a vehicle for social reproduction. Bernstein called this process the recontextualization of knowledge: From its point of inception, originally conceived knowledge undergoes changes through selection and filtration processes, eventually becoming curriculum--a relay for certain social and cultural values. Gaps in the recontextualization process allow teachers to place their own individual stamp upon the learning and teaching that occur in their classroom. Teacher-pupil …

Young Professionals As Ambivalent Change Agents In New Orleans After The 2005 Hurricanes, Renia Ehrenfeucht, Marla Nelson Dec 2011

Young Professionals As Ambivalent Change Agents In New Orleans After The 2005 Hurricanes, Renia Ehrenfeucht, Marla Nelson

Renia Ehrenfeucht

After the 2005 hurricanes, newcomers arrived in New Orleans to help rebuild the city. The influx of one identifiable group, young professionals and postgraduates, raised hopes and concerns that New Orleans would gentrify. Based on semistructured interviews with 78 young and mid-career professionals, this paper examines how the young professionals approached an ambivalent situation where they were working to rebuild a better city while retaining its distinct cultural qualities, given that their presence itself contributed to the cultural change. They reconciled these tensions with an appreciation for localism that, for newcomers in particular, was expressed through knowing and responding to …

Addressing Emerging Security Threats In Post-Gaddafi Sahel And Ecowas Response To The Malian Crises, Emmanuel Aning, Frank Okyere, Mustapha Abdallah Dec 2011

Addressing Emerging Security Threats In Post-Gaddafi Sahel And Ecowas Response To The Malian Crises, Emmanuel Aning, Frank Okyere, Mustapha Abdallah

Emmanuel Kwesi Aning

This policy paper examines the broader impact of post-Gaddafi security challenges on West African states, with particular emphasis on the Sahelian regions. This will be juxtaposed against the old insecurities serving as long time precursors. As the first major unintended consequence of the Libyan crisis, we discuss the events leading to the Malian coup d’état and its implications on the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). Finally, the paper analyzes the options for international engagement, focusing on the UN, EU, AU and ECOWAS.

Net Superoxide Levels: Steeper Increase With Activity In Cooler Female And Hotter Male Lizards, Cissy Ballen, Mo Healey, Mark Wilson, Michael Tobler, Erik Wapstra, Mats Olsson

Mark R Wilson

"Ectotherms increase their body temperature in response to ambient heat, thereby elevating their metabolic rate. An often inferred consequence of this is an overall upregulation of gene expression and energetic expenditure, and a concomitant increased production of reactive oxygen species (e. g. superoxide) and, perhaps, a shortened lifespan. However, recent work shows that this may be a superficial interpretation. For example, sometimes a reduced temperature may in fact trigger up-regulation of gene expression. We studied temperature and associated activity effects in male and female Australian painted dragon lizards (Ctenophorus pictus) by allowing the lizards to bask for 4 h versus …
