Trust Or Bust?: Questioning The Relationship Between Media Trust And News Attention, Ann E. Williams
Trust Or Bust?: Questioning The Relationship Between Media Trust And News Attention, Ann E. Williams
Ann E Williams
This article establishes the theoretical significance of media trust and explores the relationships between individuals' levels of media trust and news attention. Three distinct types of media trust are introduced: 1) trust of news information, 2) trust of those who deliver the news, and 3) trust of media corporations. The findings indicate that these different types of media trust relate to news attention in distinct ways, specifically when examined across medium. The theoretical significance of the findings are discussed and contextualized in light of an evolving media environment.

A primary reason for using language is, of course, to convey meaning from one interlocutor to another. But how does language convey meaning? How does language structure contribute to meaning? How does context shape meaning? How do linguists talk about and analyze meaning? In this course, we will examine basic concepts, theories, and analytical techniques used by contemporary linguists in the study of meaning in natural language. Students will gain practice with different types of semantic analyses through assignments and problem sets. The goals of the course are (1) to provide a grounding in semantics as a sub-field of linguistics, …

Income Polarization, Convergence Tools And Mixture Analysis, Michele Battisti, Christopher Parmeter
Christopher F. Parmeter
Modeling the cross-country distribution of per capita using mixture analysis provides a natural platform for the recovery or detection of clubs of countries. Unfortunately, these mixture methods, when based on a strictly univariate approach are limiting towards one's ability to learn about the underlying process of the emergence of the clubs. This paper takes a fresh look at the sources contributing to the emergence of clubs in the distribution of cross-country output using bivariate and multivariate mixture analysis.
Cartelizing Taxes: Understanding The Oecd’S Campaign Against “Harmful Tax Competition”, Lotta Moberg, Andrew P. Morriss
Cartelizing Taxes: Understanding The Oecd’S Campaign Against “Harmful Tax Competition”, Lotta Moberg, Andrew P. Morriss
Andrew P. Morriss
Formed in 1961 to promote global economic and social well-being, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has become the collective voice of rich countries on international tax issues. After an initial focus on improving commerce through addressing double taxation issues, the organization shifted to a focus on restricting tax competition and increasing automatic exchanges of tax information. In this paper we analyze the reasons for this shift in policy focus. After describing the history of the OECD’s work on taxation, we examine the OECD’s project against “harmful tax competition” as it has played out since its launch in …

With Feeling: How Emotions Shape Negotiation, Mara Olekalns, Daniel Druckman
With Feeling: How Emotions Shape Negotiation, Mara Olekalns, Daniel Druckman
Mara Olekalns
An increasingly popular topic in current research is how emotional expressions influence the course of negotiation and related interactions. Negotiation is a form of social exchange that pits the opposing motives of cooperating and competing against one another. Most negotiators seek to reach an agreement with the other party; they also strive for an agreement that serves their own goals. This dual concern is reflected in a process that consists of both bargaining and problem solving. A good deal of the research and practice literature concentrates on ways to perform these activities effectively. In earlier writing, emotions were viewed largely …
Repetition And The Symbolic In Contemporary Japanese Ancestor Memorial Ritual, Jason A. Danely
Repetition And The Symbolic In Contemporary Japanese Ancestor Memorial Ritual, Jason A. Danely
Jason Danely
Ancestor memorial rituals, including mortuary ceremonies for the dead, periodic grave visits, practices at home altars, and the like, constitute the most popular form of religious participation in contemporary Japan, encompassing an increasingly diverse number of ritual forms. This article examines a common theoretical framework used to describe this diversity by categorizing rituals in terms of continuity vs. change or tradition vs. invention. This article proposes an alternate framework for understanding processes leading to the transformation of rituals like ancestor memorial. This framework is centered around the process of repetition and its role in the production of the symbolic. Drawing …

Appreciating The World: A Framework For Doing Socio-Political Analysis, David P. Oakley
Appreciating The World: A Framework For Doing Socio-Political Analysis, David P. Oakley
David P Oakley
Advocates of Army Leader Development Strategy (ALDS) and the liberal arts share the same goal: cultivation of “agile, adaptive, and innovative” people. Yet, the Army does not have an implementation plan for cultivating these attributes, and its Professional Military Education (PME) institutions do not offer an expansive liberal arts education. Given the contemporary operational environment, any plan to develop critical and creative thinkers must include an appreciation of complex socio-political dynamics. I propose a course of study that moves the Army closer to ALDS’s and liberal-arts advocates’ aims. I develop a framework comprising nine International Relations (IR) concepts that is …

Future Life Goals Of Hiv-Positive Gay And Bisexual Emerging Adults, Douglas Bruce, Gary W. Harper, The Atn

This qualitative study explores the future life goals reported by a sample of HIV-positive gay/bisexual male emerging adults. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 54 participants ages 17-24 at four geographically and demographically diverse adolescent HIV medicine programs to explore the content of participants’ goals, perceived obstacles and sources of resilience. We provide descriptive data on goals articulated by participants to begin to understand (1) how gay male emerging adults may differ from the heteronormative samples that have characterized most research on emerging adulthood to date, (2) how living with HIV/AIDS may impact the future life goals of this population, and …

Does The Individual Mandate Force Individuals To Buy Insurance?, Raphael Boleslavsky, Sergio J. Campos
Does The Individual Mandate Force Individuals To Buy Insurance?, Raphael Boleslavsky, Sergio J. Campos
Raphael Boleslavsky
The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act contains provisions which penalize individuals for failing to purchase health insurance. These provisions are commonly known as the "individual mandate." Both critics and supporters believe that the individual mandate forces individuals to buy health insurance, but supporters argue that this coercion is necessary. This term, the Supreme Court will address the constitutionality of the mandate, and this legal issue has sparked debate about the government's power to force individuals to purchase a private good. In this Essay we question the consensus that the individual mandate forces individuals to pay for health insurance. Using …

When people are asked the question, What is the source of Saudi Arabia’s power? Who would cite factors other than oil? This equation of Saudi power exclusively with its oil wealth is mistaken. Historically, a principal and the most consistent source of Saudi power at the domestic, regional and global levels has not been revenues from oil, but the cultural power that inheres in a Kingdom that is both the capitol of the Muslim and Arab worlds. This soft power accounts for as much, if not more, of Saudi influence than even oil itself. To a large extent, this power …
The Impact Of Municipal Renewable Electricity Use On Greenhouse Gas Emissions In The United States, Rachel M. Krause
The Impact Of Municipal Renewable Electricity Use On Greenhouse Gas Emissions In The United States, Rachel M. Krause
Rachel M. Krause
Local governments are increasingly taking initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. However, limited and inconsistent data makes evaluating the aggregate impact of relevant actions difficult. This paper focuses specifically on U.S. city governments’ use of renewable electricity to power their own operations. It develops a range of rough estimates for the cumulative nationwide impact of this activity and finds that it results in an annual abatement of between 5.8 and 29.2 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e), with the best approximation being 6.2 million tons CO2e a year. This is about 20% of the estimated total that …

Keeping An Eye On Unrwa, Randa R. Farah Dr.

Israel recently launched a spate of attacks on UNRWA, the UN Agency serving Palestinian refugees, which could herald another attempt to shut the Agency down. At the same time, UNRWA faces serious external and internal challenges that, given the history of Western attempts to use it to resettle Palestinian refugees, could result in shifts in the Agency’s mission and mandate, as happened briefly in the post-Oslo period. Al-Shabaka Policy Advisor Randa Farah analyses the Israeli, Western, and Arab challenges to UNRWA that call for Palestinian vigilance in 2012.

Testing The Factorial Invariance Of The Filipino And English Versions Of The Inventory Of School Motivation For Filipino Bilingual Students, Fraide A. Ganotice, Allan B.I. Bernardo, Ronnel B. King
Ronnel B King
This study tests the invariance of the original English version and the Filipino translation of the Inventory of School Motivation (ISM; McInerney & Sinclair, 1992), an instrument that assesses student motivation in schools. In particular, the study (a) assessed the invariance of the ISM across two Filipino-English bilingual samples that answered one of the two language versions, and (b) assessed the between-network construct validity of the two language versions, by examining how selected motivation scales of the two versions relate to students’ self-perceptions

Smart Development: Saudi Arabia's Quest For A Knowledge Economy, Giulio M. Gallarotti, Isam Yahia Al Filali
Giulio M Gallarotti
Nations that have sought to overcome the resource curse and other barriers to economic growth have for some time sought greater development through a number of strategies: from import substitution in the 1950s to current strategies based on microfinance and human-capabilities approaches. Needless to say, the international community is still searching for the elusive Holy Grail of the optimal development strategy. One strategy that is gaining greater attention and adherents is that of promoting a transition to a knowledge economy. This paper is about one such nation: Saudi Arabia. In analyzing the Kingdom’s quest for a knowledge economy, this article …
