Narrative Analysis (Prospective Syllabus), Adam Hodges Dec 2011

Narrative Analysis (Prospective Syllabus), Adam Hodges

Adam Hodges

Narrative is central to human interaction. As we interact with one another, we share stories and make sense of the world through narrative. Given the importance of narrative in human lives, it is no surprise that it has been studied across a wide range of disciplines, from literary studies to psychology, folklore, anthropology, sociology and linguistics. In this course, we will examine narrative from a sociocultural linguistic perspective which takes into account the interdisciplinary nature of narrative studies. We will place particular emphasis on the way narrative constructs the social world in which we live and creates the identities that …

Cartelizing Taxes: Understanding The Oecd’S Campaign Against “Harmful Tax Competition”, Lotta Moberg, Andrew P. Morriss Dec 2011

Cartelizing Taxes: Understanding The Oecd’S Campaign Against “Harmful Tax Competition”, Lotta Moberg, Andrew P. Morriss

Andrew P. Morriss

Formed in 1961 to promote global economic and social well-being, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has become the collective voice of rich countries on international tax issues. After an initial focus on improving commerce through addressing double taxation issues, the organization shifted to a focus on restricting tax competition and increasing automatic exchanges of tax information. In this paper we analyze the reasons for this shift in policy focus. After describing the history of the OECD’s work on taxation, we examine the OECD’s project against “harmful tax competition” as it has played out since its launch in …

Data, Data Use, And Scientific Inquiry: Two Case Studies Of Data Practices, Christine L. Borgman Dec 2011

Data, Data Use, And Scientific Inquiry: Two Case Studies Of Data Practices, Christine L. Borgman

Christine L. Borgman

Data are proliferating far faster than they can be captured, managed, or stored. What types of data are most likely to be used and reused, by whom, and for what purposes? Answers to these questions will inform information policy and the design of digital libraries. We report findings from semi-structured interviews and field observations to investigate characteristics of data use and reuse and how those characteristics vary within and between scientific communities. The two communities studied are researchers at the Center for Embedded Network Sensing (CENS) and users of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) data. The data practices of …

The Development And Validation Of The Relational Self-Esteem Scale, Hongfei Du, Ronnel B. King, Peilian Chi Dec 2011

The Development And Validation Of The Relational Self-Esteem Scale, Hongfei Du, Ronnel B. King, Peilian Chi

Ronnel B King

he development and validation of the Relational Self-Esteem Scale. Scandinavian Journal of Psychology. According to the tripartite model of the self (Brewer & Gardner, 1996), the self consists of three aspects: personal, relational, and collective. Correspondingly, individuals can achieve a sense of self-worth through their personal attributes (personal self-esteem), relationship with significant others (relational self-esteem), or social group membership (collective self-esteem). Existing measures on personal and collective self-esteem are available in the literature; however, no scale exists that assesses relational self-esteem. The authors developed a scale to measure individual differences in relational self-esteem and tested it with two samples of …

Legal And Political Issues Faced By Turkey In Becoming A Member Of European Union, Riza Dogan Dec 2011

Legal And Political Issues Faced By Turkey In Becoming A Member Of European Union, Riza Dogan

Riza Dogan

ABSTRACT. Turkey applied for a European Union membership for more than 50 years ago and it is still waiting at the front door. During this time European Union grew from six countries to 27 member states including former communist countries such as Poland, Bulgaria and Romania and small islands in the Mediterranean such as Malta and Cyprus. Turkey is insisting for a full membership while the EU is giving unspecified dates for entrance. The relationship between Turkey and the EU entered a new phrase on October, 2005 with the opening of Turkey’s accession negotiations but negotiation process is going unbelievably …

Language In The Usa (Prospective Syllabus), Adam Hodges Dec 2011

Language In The Usa (Prospective Syllabus), Adam Hodges

Adam Hodges

Americans grapple with a number of issues related to language in the areas of education, civil rights, and government policy. In this course, we will explore some of the language issues that have arisen in American society with emphasis placed on the way language itself has become the object of focus in social and political debates. One such case is the decision by the Oakland School Board in 1996 to recognize Ebonics as the primary language of its African American students. This decision created intense nationwide controversy, and illustrates the way race and socioeconomic issues intersect with language attitudes. Another …

Surf’S Up: Riding The Big Data Wave (Poster), Ashley Sands, Christine L. Borgman, Sharon Traweek

We use ethnographic methods to follow the builders and users of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), known as “the human genome project of astronomy.” SDSS was designed as an open data project and it is among the most successful big data projects in science. We are spotting the indicators of how well astronomers are riding the big data wave - and when they are wiping out - with consequences for other creators, users, analysts, managers, and funders of big data systems. http://ipp.oii.ox.ac.uk/2012/programme-2012/poster-session/ashley-sands-christine-l-borgman-laura-a

The Discursive Frames Of Political Psychology, Paul W. Nesbitt-Larking, Catarina Kinnvall Dec 2011

The Discursive Frames Of Political Psychology, Paul W. Nesbitt-Larking, Catarina Kinnvall

Paul W Nesbitt-Larking

The aim of this article is to apply elements of contemporary social theory to the major theoretical, methodological, and ideological divisions across political psychology and to consider both the origins and the impact of a range of theories and models. In so doing, we clarify some of the complexity surrounding the discursive and cultural origins of political psychology. On the basis of this analysis, we aim to overcome the redundant binaries and dualisms—both conceptual and geo‐spatial—that have characterized the field up to now. These binary pairs relate to matters of epistemology, ideology, and methodology, and we show how each pair …

Religion And Nationalism: Four Approaches, Rogers Brubaker Dec 2011

Religion And Nationalism: Four Approaches, Rogers Brubaker

Rogers Brubaker

Building on recent literature, this paper discusses four ways of studying the relation between religion and nationalism. The first is to treat religion and nationalism, along with ethnicity and race, as analogous phenomena. The second is to specify ways in which religion helps explain things about nationalism - its origin, its power, or its distinctive character in particular cases. The third is to treat religion as part of nationalism, and to specify modes of interpenetration and intertwining. The fourth is to posit a distinctively religious form of nationalism. The paper concludes by reconsidering the much-criticized understanding of nationalism as a …

Bureaucratic Advocacy And Ethics A State-Level Case Of Public Agency Rulemaking And Tobacco Control Policy, Michael S. Givel, Andrew Spivak Dec 2011

Bureaucratic Advocacy And Ethics A State-Level Case Of Public Agency Rulemaking And Tobacco Control Policy, Michael S. Givel, Andrew Spivak

Michael S. Givel

Before 2001, the Oklahoma Department of Health achieved little to protect the public from the dangers of secondhand tobacco smoke. In an ongoing effort between 2000 and 2003, the department joined with health groups to lobby for stronger requirements, resulting in a new Oklahoma administrative rule in 2002 and legislation in 2003 regulating secondhand tobacco smoke. This action was congruent with the American Society of Public Administration's Code of Ethics for interactive democratic policymaking, in which administrators are required to serve the public interest with compassion, benevolence, fairness, and optimism.

Organizing And Indexing Photo Collections, Rose Fortier Dec 2011

Organizing And Indexing Photo Collections, Rose Fortier

Rose Fortier

Historical photo archives or collections can put an organization on the map and make it into a destination for patrons. Conversely, if not well organize and indexed, collections and archives can languish in obscurity and occupy valuable space and resources with no tangible return for the organizations. The Milwaukee Public Library's Historic Photo Archives contain around thirty thousand historic images; of those images, most are located in the Historic Photo Collection, on of the archives' 45 individual collections. The Historic Photo Archives has evolved over the decades. Various reference librarians have been assigned to the archives, and the rotation of …
