The Learning Narrative Within Libraries, Rick A. Stoddart
The Learning Narrative Within Libraries, Rick A. Stoddart
Rick A Stoddart
Our libraries iare rich with stories and we all play a part in enacting each storyline. Each narrative we embrace helps illuminate what we value and how we go about describing that value. This lightning talk will use the OSU Learning Goals for Graduates to highlight the learning narrative within libraries. The talk will provide inspiration about how this story might inform our understanding of the library and what role we might play together in writing its next chapter.

Energy Consumption-Economic Growth Nexus: Does The Level Of Aggregation Matter?, Maamar Sebri, Mehdi Abid
Energy Consumption-Economic Growth Nexus: Does The Level Of Aggregation Matter?, Maamar Sebri, Mehdi Abid
Maamar Sebri
This study investigates the causal relationship between energy consumption and economic performance for the total economy as well as for industry, transport, and residential sectors for Tunisia during the period 1980-2007. The application of Vector error correction model (VECM) for non-stationary and cointegrated series suggests that causality directions at aggregated and disaggregated levels are mixed. However, the findings have important policy implications. While at the level of the total economy, energy plays an important role in development of Tunisian economy, it seems not to have an impact on economic performance at sectoral level. We conclude that results appear to be …

While economic models have already proven useful to analyze big picture questions about climate policy such as the choice between a carbon tax or cap-and-trade permit system, the 19 chapters in this book show how economic models also are useful to address the many remaining smaller questions that arise as policy is implemented. For example, chapters consider: the tradeoffs policymakers confront in deciding whether to implement the policy upstream on energy producers or downstream on energy users; how to monitor and enforce climate policy; how Federal actions might interact with climate policies at other levels of government or with other …

War, Forced Displacement And Growth In Laotian Adults, Patrick F. Clarkin
War, Forced Displacement And Growth In Laotian Adults, Patrick F. Clarkin
Patrick F. Clarkin
Background: Evidence from several populations suggests
that war negatively impacts civilian nutrition, physical growth and overall health. This effect is often enduring or permanent, particularly if experienced early in life.
Aim: To assess whether the number of lifetime displacement
experiences and being displaced in infancy were associated with adult height, sitting height, leg length and the sitting height ratio.
Subjects and methods: Retrospective questionnaires on
displacement and resettlement experiences and
anthropometric data were collected from a sample of Laotian adult refugees (ethnic Hmong and Lao; n ¼ 365). All were born in Laos or Thailand and had resettled in French …

The current classifications for public school costs are provided by the National Center for Educational Statistics. To improve comparability between school districts, this paper provides an alternative classification with fewer numbers of expenditure categories and sub-categories. We also introduce distinctions between school-based and non-school based administration costs and between elementary and secondary schools to provide an identification of possible sources of inefficiency. The new classification is then applied to five comparable urban school districts Atlanta, Boston, Mobile, Nashville, and Newark. We find (1) that teacher salaries per student are affected by school level disaggregation; (2) that separating administrative costs into …

Examining The Role Of Identity In Negotiation Decision Making: The Case Of Cyprus, Cigdem V. Sirin
Examining The Role Of Identity In Negotiation Decision Making: The Case Of Cyprus, Cigdem V. Sirin
Cigdem V. Sirin
This study examines the effects of ethnic and social identities on negotiation decision making in the context of the Cyprus conflict. I conduct a theory-driven case study of the 1959 Zurich-London agreements on Cyprus, analyzing the positions of Turkey, Greece, Britain, and the Turkish and Greek Cypriot communities during the negotiation process. I find that even in the presence of adversarial ethnic ties, decision makers who have a shared (and salient) social identity are more likely to employ collective-serving decision strategies and seek evenhanded solutions that will not jeopardize their mutual interests. In contrast, decision makers with severe ethnic fragmentation …
Judicial Non-Compliance In A Non-Hierarchical Legal Order: Isolated Accident Or Omen Of Judicial Armageddon?, Arthur Dyevre
Judicial Non-Compliance In A Non-Hierarchical Legal Order: Isolated Accident Or Omen Of Judicial Armageddon?, Arthur Dyevre

In a multi-level, non-hierarchical court system, where courts at the upper echelon do not have the power to reverse the decisions of courts at the lower level, judicial cooperation appears crucial to the effectiveness of the higher-level law. For this reason, the recent judgment of the Czech Constitutional Court, which declared the decision of the Court of Justice in the Landtová case ultra vires, would seem to deal a terrible blow to the authority of European Union law. As doomsayers will be quick to point out, the Czech decision could set a dangerous precedent that may well one day bring …
Citizens United And The Ineluctable Question Of Corporate Citizenship, Amy Sepinwall
Citizens United And The Ineluctable Question Of Corporate Citizenship, Amy Sepinwall
Amy J. Sepinwall
As a result of the Supreme Court’s decision in Citizens United, corporations and individuals now enjoy the same rights to spend money on ads supporting or opposing candidates for office. Those concerned about the role of money in politics have much to decry about the decision. But the threat to democracy posed by allowing wealthy corporations to function as political speakers arises as well under a regime that allows wealthy individuals to do so. If we are not prepared to limit individuals’ expenditures on political speech, we will have to find a way to distinguish individuals’ and corporations’ free speech …

Wind Energy Economics: Potential Economic Development In West Michigan, Paul Isely Ph.D., Yue Fan, Erik Edward Nordman Ph.D..
Erik Edward Nordman
Economic analyses conducted by the West Michigan Wind Assessment indicate that wind energy development could generate economic benefits and new employment in West Michigan; however, much of the economic activity occurs during construction and the local benefits depend on how many turbine parts are manufactured locally. As the wind industry grows in Michigan, a higher portion of the spending to construct new wind facilities could remain in the state.
