A Business Model Perspective For Icts In Public Engagement, Mutaz M. Al-Debei, Panagiotis Panagiotopoulos, Guy Fitzgerald, Tony Elliman
Dr. Mutaz M. Al-Debei
Public institutions, in their efforts to promote meaningful citizen engagement, are increasingly looking at the democratic potential of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). Previous studies suggest that such initiatives seem to be impeded by socio-technical integration barriers such as low sustainability, poor citizen acceptance, coordination difficulties, lack of understanding and failure to assess their impact. Motivated by these shortcomings, the paper develops and applies a business model perspective as an interceding framework foranalysisandevaluation. The underlying principlebehind thisapproachisthatit isnottechnology per se which determines success, but rather the way in which the business model of the technological artifact is configured and employed …

Linking Reputations Through Umbrella Branding, Jeanine Miklos-Thal
Linking Reputations Through Umbrella Branding, Jeanine Miklos-Thal
Jeanine Miklos-Thal
This paper develops a theory of umbrella branding as a way to link the reputations of otherwise unrelated products. The analysis predicts that umbrella branding can credibly signal positive correlation between the qualities of the included products to consumers, but cannot certify high quality or signal negative quality correlation. Moreover, whenever umbrella branding signals perfect positive quality correlation, firms that already sell a high (low) quality product have stronger (weaker) incentives to invest in developing another high quality product than new entrants.
The Influence Of Cognitive Styles On The Interaction With A Language Instruction Cd-Rom : A Case Study Of Malaysian Esl Learners, Lee Luan Ng
Dr Ng Lee Luan
In postcolonial multilingual societies, matters of education are deeply rooted in the discourse of ethnicity. In Malaysia, the interface between ethnicity and education is reflected in recent debates on the choice of medium of instruction (MOI). In 2002, the Malaysian government introduced English as MOI by replacing Malay, the national language, for teaching mathematics and science, at the school level. However, in 2009, the policy was reversed to Malay. This policy initiative has been actively contested in the Malaysian media. Through an analysis of news reports on the controversy published by the Malaysian Chinese newspaper, Nanyang Siang Pao, this paper …

Dark Tourism And Significant Other Death: Towards A Model Of Mortality Mediation, Philip Stone Dr
Dark Tourism And Significant Other Death: Towards A Model Of Mortality Mediation, Philip Stone Dr
Dr Philip Stone
Dark tourism and the commodification of death has become a pervasive feature within the contemporary visitor economy. Drawing upon the thanatological condition of society and a structural analysis of modern-day mortality, this paper establishes theoretical foundations for exploring dark tourism experiences. The study argues that in Western secular society where ordinary death is sequestered behind medical and professional façades, yet extraordinary death is recreated for popular consumption, dark tourism mediates a potential social filter between life and death. Ultimately, the research suggests that dark tourism is a modern mediating institution, which not only provides a physical place to link the …

This paper discusses one successful partnership between the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and the City of Springfield in Massachusetts. This collaboration was targeted to benefit the City by helping with their economic revitalization efforts, and the University by giving them a space in downtown Springfield for a ‘Design Center’, where students have a meeting space for studio and field work and can then exhibit their work. The paper ends with a set of principles that can guide other institutions and communities in developing strategic outreach and engagement activities.
Stepping Up To The Veggie Plate: Framing Veganism As Living Your Values, Carrie Packwood Freeman
Stepping Up To The Veggie Plate: Framing Veganism As Living Your Values, Carrie Packwood Freeman
Carrie P. Freeman
America’s animal rights organizations have increasingly focused on vegetarian campaigns to protect the growing number of animals who are farmed and fished. But on what basis do these animal rights organizations promote plant-based diets in ways that will resonate with a meat-eating American public? To determine how animal rights organizations align their values with those of the public, this textual analysis examines how values are framed in the print and electronic food advocacy campaign messages of five national animal organizations in 2008. Findings reveal that campaigns associate veganism with altruism, health, environmental responsibility, and humanitarianism. Campaigns appeal to Americans based …
A Modest Proposal For Scholarly Publishing: 21st Century Ideas For A 19th Century System, Shawn Martin
A Modest Proposal For Scholarly Publishing: 21st Century Ideas For A 19th Century System, Shawn Martin
Shawn Martin
In 1729 Jonathan Swift wrote A Modest Proposal which proposed (albeit sarcastically) that Irish peasants could solve their economic problems by selling their children to the rich. The point Swift was making, with an admittedly morbid sense of humor, was that Ireland was facing serious problems and that transformational change was needed. Similarly, the scholarly publishing and communication system is also in need of such changes in order to continue. To facilitate this change, it is important to re-frame how we think about scholarly publishing. Disseminating scholarship is no longer a matter of simply publishing work in a print monograph …
La Institucionalización De La Ciencia Política En América Latina, Fernando Barrientos Del Monte
La Institucionalización De La Ciencia Política En América Latina, Fernando Barrientos Del Monte
Fernando Barrientos Del Monte
Posteriormente …

This article reports on research conducted in the Parma City Schools, Ohio by The Society for Prevention of Violence (SPV). The SPV is dedicated to reducing the prevalence of violent acts and asocial behaviors of children and adults through education. It accomplishes this mission by teaching children and adults the use of the skills necessary to build their character. Findings suggest that the SPV program improves the ability of children within class to pay attention and be organized. The greatest improved social behaviors for participants were in helping others who are having trouble; increased ability to initiate positive interactions; and, …

Repensar A Teoria Do Estado Entre Pluralismo Ético E Globalização, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha
Repensar A Teoria Do Estado Entre Pluralismo Ético E Globalização, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

In this essay, we examine the assumptions underlying natural science, social science, and the humanities. More specifically, we suggest that social science in general and leisure science in particular be guided by a different set of assumptions than those guiding natural science and the humanities. Drawing on the Aristotelian idea of phronesis, we propose that value rationality more so than instrumental rationality guide social scientific inquiry, and that social science in general, and leisure science in particular, be viewed as a bridge between natural science and the humanities
