Research Brief: "Soldiers To Citizens: The Link Between Military Service And Volunteering", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University

Institute for Veterans and Military Families

This research examines the relationship between military service and political engagement, such as voting and volunteering. This study found that older and married veterans were more likely to volunteer than their younger and unmarried counterparts, and therefore veterans who are suffering from depression or loss of purpose might benefit from programs that encourage volunteering. Future research should further investigate the links between individual socioeconomic characteristics, family, social support, and engagement in volunteer work.

Examining The Shift In Occupational Identity After A Brain Injury, Mikelle Bryson-Campbell Nov 2013

Examining The Shift In Occupational Identity After A Brain Injury, Mikelle Bryson-Campbell

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Occupational identity is defined by Kielhofner (2002) as a sense of who we are as an occupational being, based on our past, current, and future occupational roles. When a life disruption occurs such as a brain injury (BI) and the disruption impacts the ability to conduct an occupation deemed meaningful an important process of transition occurs (Muenchberger, Kendall, & Neal, 2008). In turn occupational identity may shift to reflect the current health and economic status of the individual and what occupations are judged as meaningful.

The current study examined the shift in occupational identity in BI survivors in a two …

Mapping The Relationship Between International Sport And Diplomacy, Stuart Murray, Geoffrey Pigman Nov 2013

Mapping The Relationship Between International Sport And Diplomacy, Stuart Murray, Geoffrey Pigman

Stuart Murray

To date, the relationship between diplomacy and international sport has been relatively under-theorized. This paper seeks to redress the deficiency by proposing an analytical taxonomy of the multiple convergences between international sport and diplomacy. The principal analytical distinction to be drawn is between (1) international sport consciously employed by governments as an instrument of diplomacy and (2) international-sport-as-diplomacy, the diplomatic representation, communication and negotiation between non-state actors that take place as a result of ongoing international sporting competition.

By increasing understanding of the rôles of sport in diplomacy and diplomacy in sport, the paper seeks to promote the adoption of …

The Guerilla Open Access Manifesto: Aaron Swartz, Open Access And The Sharing Imperative, Benjamin L. Hockenberry Nov 2013

The Guerilla Open Access Manifesto: Aaron Swartz, Open Access And The Sharing Imperative, Benjamin L. Hockenberry

Lavery Library Faculty/Staff Publications

In my talk, I'll discuss the current state of legal Open Access as it faces challenge from publishers and regulatory establishments above and from extra-legal filesharing bubbling under the surface. Specifically, I'll discuss how the case of Aaron Swartz exposes the ethical culture of the "guerilla open-access" undercurrent that seeks to disruptively advance the OA mission. “The world's entire scientific and cultural heritage, published over centuries in books and journals, is increasingly being digitized and locked up by a handful of private corporations. Want to read the papers featuring the most famous results of the sciences? You'll need to send …

A Convergence-Building Model Of Superfund Site Communication: Building On Lessons From The Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant, Anna G. Hoover, Lindell Ormsbee Nov 2013

A Convergence-Building Model Of Superfund Site Communication: Building On Lessons From The Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant, Anna G. Hoover, Lindell Ormsbee

Anna G. Hoover

Best practices approaches have guided governmental risk communication efforts at Superfund and other chronic risk sites for more than two decades, playing an important role in the ways in which those most affected by contamination make sense of risk. Such approaches can affect the information environment in two separate but related ways: 1) directly, through the explicit sharing of information, and 2) indirectly, through ongoing stakeholder interpretations of the processes by which that information is shared. To date, the indirect, process-related effects have not been addressed in assessments of communicative efficacy at Superfund sites. Thus, it increasingly is necessary to …

Student Performance In A Principle Of Microeconomics Course Under Hybrid And Face-To-Face Delivery, P. Verhoeven, T. Rudchenko Nov 2013

Student Performance In A Principle Of Microeconomics Course Under Hybrid And Face-To-Face Delivery, P. Verhoeven, T. Rudchenko

Faculty Articles

Designing a hybrid course entails the challenge of choosing learning activities for each of the face-to-face and online environments--and sequencing and coordinating the activities across the two environments--to promote student attainment of the course’s learning objectives. This paper presents a study comparing student performance in an undergraduate Principles of Microeconomics course taught by the same instructor under hybrid (n = 51) and face-to-face (n = 24) delivery. The percentage of hybrid students completing the course (71%) was not significantly different (chi-square = .61, p = .433) than that (79%) of the face-to-face students. A regression analysis controlling for student GPA …

Citizens Without A Nation: The Construction Of Haitian Illegality And Deportability In The Dominican Republic, Sasha Miranda Nov 2013

Citizens Without A Nation: The Construction Of Haitian Illegality And Deportability In The Dominican Republic, Sasha Miranda

Theses and Dissertations

Migrant "illegality" has increasingly become a popular topic in political debates around the world, but illegal populations are not random or self-generating, they are created and patterned (DeGenova 2002:422). Through the recent enforcement of new and existing immigration laws, the Dominican State has begun to move large populations of Haitian immigrants and their descendants into irregular or "illegal" immigration status.

A historical analysis of the relationship between the Dominican State and Haitian immigrants presents a paradox: the Dominican economy has become increasingly dependent on Haitian migrant labor, yet the Dominican State has persistently worked to force Haitians and their descendants …

Emotion Versus Motivation: Probing Dissociable Effects On Cognitive Control Through Task Performance, Pupillometry Methods, And Individual Differences, Kimberly Sarah Chiew Nov 2013

Emotion Versus Motivation: Probing Dissociable Effects On Cognitive Control Through Task Performance, Pupillometry Methods, And Individual Differences, Kimberly Sarah Chiew

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

It is becoming increasingly appreciated that affective influences can contribute strongly to goal-oriented cognition and behaviour. However, much work is still needed to properly characterize these influences and the mechanisms by which they contribute to cognitive processing. An important question concerns the nature of emotional manipulations: i.e., direct induction of affectively valenced subjective experience) versus motivational manipulations: e.g., delivery of performance-contingent rewards and punishments) and their impact on cognitive control. Given previous empirical evidence suggesting that positive emotion may enhance cognitive flexibility and reactive control, while performance-contingent rewards may enhance goal maintenance and proactive control, we sought to directly compare …

Community Participation In Disaster Planning And The Expectation Gap: Analysis And Recommendations, Phillip Sperry Nov 2013

Community Participation In Disaster Planning And The Expectation Gap: Analysis And Recommendations, Phillip Sperry

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the expectation gap and how it relates to the field of emergency management. As disasters become more commonplace, many citizens have high expectations of their governments, which results in a lack of individual disaster preparation. This thesis analyzed the current state of community education and engagement programs, use of best practices by governments and inter-agency cooperation and partnerships. The research consisted of fifteen interviews with emergency management professionals representing local, state, and federal government as well as the private sector. The results show limited public participation, as well as issues with crisis communications systems. Over 80% of …

Understanding How Advance Care Planning Is Approached In The Residential Aged Care Setting: A Continuum Model Of Practice As An Explanatory Device, Christopher Shanley, Elizabeth Whitmore, Angela Khoo, Colleen Cartwright, Amanda Walker, Robert Cumming Nov 2013

Understanding How Advance Care Planning Is Approached In The Residential Aged Care Setting: A Continuum Model Of Practice As An Explanatory Device, Christopher Shanley, Elizabeth Whitmore, Angela Khoo, Colleen Cartwright, Amanda Walker, Robert Cumming

Professor Colleen M Cartwright

Objective:  To gain an understanding of how advance care planning (ACP) is understood and approached by managers of residential aged care facilities.

Methods:  Qualitative interviews with managers from 41 residential aged care facilities from South Western Sydney, Australia. Content and thematic analysis of interview transcripts.

Results:  The majority of facilities do not have a systematic approach to ACP, but tend to initiate discussions about end-of-life treatments late in a resident's illness. There are varying degrees to which these discussions are used in ongoing care planning or made explicit if the resident is transferred to hospital. A number of factors are …

Discussing Prognosis With Terminally Ill Cancer Patients And Relatives: A Survey Of Physicians' Intentions In Seven Countries, Jennifer Voorhee, Judith Rietjens, Bregje Onwuteaka-Philipsen, Luc Deliens, Colleen Cartwright, Karin Faisst, Michael Norup, Guido Miccinesi, Agnes Van Der Heide Nov 2013

Professor Colleen M Cartwright

Objective To determine the extent to which physicians in different countries intend to inform terminal patients and relatives about prognosis, and to identify physician characteristics associated with an active approach to such discussions. Methods In the context of a European research project, a study on disclosing prognosis was conducted in seven countries. A written questionnaire with questions regarding hypothetical cases and actual practices was sent to physicians from specialties involved in the care of dying patients. Results 10,139 questionnaires were studied. The response rate was greater than 50% in all countries except Italy (39%). The percentage of physicians who indicated …

Results Of A Survey Among Physicians In Six European Countries And Australia, Georg Bosshard, Susanne Fischer, Colleen Cartwright, Karin Faisst, Rurik Lofmark, Guido Miccinesi, Freddy Mortier, Michael Norup, Bregje Onwuteaka-Philipsen, Johannes Van Delden

Professor Colleen M Cartwright

Background: Whereas there is broad agreement that euthanasia should be performed by physicians only, this is contested for (physician-) assisted suicide.

Methods: We conducted a survey to investigate whether European and Australian physicians see morally relevant differences between assisted suicide and euthanasia, and whether, after a possible legalization of assisted suicide, they believe it should be performed by physicians only.

Results: 10 139 questionnaires were studied. 76% of the physicians in Belgium, 66% in the Netherlands, 62% in Australia, 48% in Denmark, 44% in Switzerland, and 10% in Sweden thought that assisted suicide should be performed by physicians only. 16% …
