Sports Message Boarding: Association With Sports Team Identification And Social Well-Being, Brian D. Carlson
Sports Message Boarding: Association With Sports Team Identification And Social Well-Being, Brian D. Carlson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Research indicates that participating in or volunteering for sports related activities may increase overall well-being. Additionally, identifying with, or being a fan of a particular sports team may contribute to positive psychological outcomes. However, no study to date has examined whether participation in sports team message boarding is associated with positive psychological outcomes. As a result, the current study sought to determine if positive relationships exist among message board usage, team identification, and positive psychology variables. Three hundred and four members of an online sports message board completed self-report surveys examining message board usage, team identification, and positive psychological traits. …

Association Of Family Structure And Glycemic Control In Adolescents With Type 1 Diabetes: Risk And Protective Factors, Laura Jean Caccavale
Association Of Family Structure And Glycemic Control In Adolescents With Type 1 Diabetes: Risk And Protective Factors, Laura Jean Caccavale
Theses and Dissertations
Youth with type 1 diabetes (T1D) from single-parent families are more likely to be in poorer glycemic control (HbA1c). Demographic trends indicate more households are composed of unmarried adults and fewer youths. Family density, or a youth: adult ratio, may be a more salient factor than single-parent status in the association with glycemic control. Data from 257 adolescents aged 11-14 years (M = 12.84) at two different sites were collected as part of a randomized control trial of a treatment intervention designed to increase parent involvement and prevent deterioration of adolescent diabetes disease care. Single-parent status was determined by parental …

[Introduction To] 7 Lenses: Learning The Principles And Practices Of Ethical Leadership, Linda Fisher Thornton
Bookshelf
7 Lenses is a clear, actionable and holistic road map for leading ethically in a complex world. With a foreword by Stephen M. R. Covey, this book takes us beyond the triple bottom line to 7 different perspectives on ethical leadership, and provides 14 Guiding Principles that help us honor them all in daily leadership. It answers: Why do even the ethics experts disagree about what ethical leadership means? What is the bigger picture that we should use as our leadership road map? What are the business benefits of intentionally using high-level ethical leadership? What can we do to prepare …

Genetic variations in the large-conductance, voltage- and calcium activated potassium channels (BK channels) have been recently implicated in mental retardation, autism and schizophrenia which all come along with severe cognitive impairments. In the present study we investigate the effects of functional BK channel deletion on cognition using a genetic mouse model with a knock-out of the gene for the pore forming α-subunit of the channel. We tested the F1 generation of a hybrid SV129/C57BL6 mouse line in which the slo1 gene was deleted in both parent strains. We first evaluated hearing and motor function to establish the suitability of this …

Shaking The Military Pillar Of Regime Support: A Closer Look At The Factors Influencing Military Defections During The Revolutions In Egypt, Libya, And Syria During The Arab Spring Movement, Sarah Kruger
Honors Theses, 1963-2015
Using Egypt, Libya, and Syria as primary case studies, this project qualitatively analyzes the recent uprisings in each of these nations with focus on what factors influenced soldiers to defect. Paying specific attention to the role of the international community, the power of nonviolent tactics, the influence of ethnic and religious divisions, and examining what happens when the opposition forces turn violent, these decisions by military personnel are deconstructed by analyzing their triggers. While the topic of military defections is a fairly new focus in revolutionary studies, this research serves as a talking point and gives insight into where future …
Does Exchange Market React To Central Bank Governor Replacements: Evidence From A New Dataset Using Narrative Approach, Siyang Xu
Honors Theses
This paper contributes to the literature that analyzes the exchange market reaction to the event of a central bank governor replacement. In order to solve the endogeneity problem, we develop a narrative approach-based on reports from credible newspapers-that classifies central bank governor replacements by their nature and causes. Using this new dataset on central bank independence for 31 countries over the period 1967-2012, we decompose all replacements into endogenous and exogenous cases with respect to inflation and financial market performance. We find that such a distinction is critical in understanding the exchange market reactions. We show that i) endogenous replacements, …

Eat Until You're Full: The Pursuit Of Autonomy And Health Through The Adoption Of Organic Agriculture In Mae Ta, Thailand, Erin Jean Plews-Ogan
Senior Independent Study Theses
This research explores the role that farmers' concerns about health and community autonomy play in the emergence of an organic agriculture movement in the village of Mae Ta in northern Thailand. In the midst of the push for export-oriented and urban-centered development, many rural people have migrated to urban areas for work or adopted contract farming of chemical-intensive cash crops. Yet farmers in Mae Ta chose a unique alternative: sufficiency-based organic polyculture. Why take on such a risk without solid policy and market support for organic agriculture in Thailand? I investigated these questions through six weeks of participant observation and …
Structural Effects Of Network Sampling Coverage I: Nodes Missing At Random, Jeffrey A. Smith, James Moody
Structural Effects Of Network Sampling Coverage I: Nodes Missing At Random, Jeffrey A. Smith, James Moody
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
Network measures assume a census of a well-bounded population. This level of coverage is rarely achieved in practice, however, and we have only limited information on the robustness of network measures to incomplete coverage. This paper examines the effect of node-level missingness on 4 classes of network measures: centrality, centralization, topology and homophily across a diverse sample of 12 empirical networks. We use a Monte Carlo simulation process to generate data with known levels of missingness and compare the resulting network scores to their known starting values. As with past studies (Borgatti et al., 2006; Kossinets, 2006), we find that …
Asean And The South China Sea Disputes: The Search For Peace And Stability Through Security Cooperation, Alessio Fratticcioli
Asean And The South China Sea Disputes: The Search For Peace And Stability Through Security Cooperation, Alessio Fratticcioli
Asian Review
The South China Sea has sea lanes of global significance, rich fishing grounds, and potentially vast oil and gas reserves. ASEAN members arc in conflict over Chinas claims in the area, but are working towards a binding code of conduct. Unity within ASEAN and continued diplomatic efforts will be essential to preventing disputes leading to armed conflict. By solving its internal inconsistencies and achieving stability, ASEAN will be able to promote its centrality in the region's security architecture as well as its importance in the global arena.
Incorporating I-O Into An Introductory Psychology Course: A New Set Of Custom Modules By The Education And Training Committee, Joseph A. Allen
Incorporating I-O Into An Introductory Psychology Course: A New Set Of Custom Modules By The Education And Training Committee, Joseph A. Allen
Psychology Faculty Publications
One concern that SIOP members often express at conferences and other gatherings of I-O psychologists is the general lack of visibility of I-O among the majority of the undergraduate students in psychology. Although interest in I-O psychology has grown among students, very few introductory psychology textbooks cover the topic. In an effort to address this concern, Mikki Hebl, the former Education and Training Committee Chair, invited a subcommittee composed of committee members and others who have expertise in undergraduate education to develop “shovel-ready” modules that introduce I-O topics to an introductory psychology audience. Those responsible for preparing the modules include …
Cultural Commercialization To Keep Indigenous Cultures Alive In Ifugao Society, The Philippines, Anniken Renslo Sandvik
Cultural Commercialization To Keep Indigenous Cultures Alive In Ifugao Society, The Philippines, Anniken Renslo Sandvik
Asian Review
This paper argues that commercialization of indigenous cultures may contribute to their continued survival. This is based on the findings from a case study in Ifugao, Philippines. Because of various factors like the conversion to Christianity, the adaptation of national systems of government and education, and the introduction of international mass media, the indigenous Ifugao cultural practices are vanishing. In an attempt to revive these practices, the municipal and provincial governments in Ifugao are arranging annual festivals showcasing indigenous culture. In this process Ifugao culture is commercialized, as the indigenous practices are being performed out of their original contexts as …
The Lives Of Others: Social Rationality In Animals, Jeffrey R. Stevens, Andrew J. King
The Lives Of Others: Social Rationality In Animals, Jeffrey R. Stevens, Andrew J. King
Jeffrey Stevens Publications
Darwin (1871) boldly claimed that humans and other animals differ very little in their cognition; a statement that has raised the ire of many scientists (Bolhuis & Wynne, 2009; Penn, Holyoak, & Povinelli, 2008). Rather than stating this continuity as a fact, we will explore the similarities and differences between humans and animals in the social rationality of their decision making. We find this a fruitful exercise because it can profit researchers of both humans and animals. Our purpose here is to provide an evolutionary background of social rationality: Why do animals attend to the lives of others? To this …
A Two-Factor Theory For Concussion Assessment Using Impact: Memory And Speed, Philip Schatz, Arthur C. Maerlender
A Two-Factor Theory For Concussion Assessment Using Impact: Memory And Speed, Philip Schatz, Arthur C. Maerlender
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
We present the initial validation of a two-factor structure of Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing (ImPACT) using ImPACT composite scores and document the reliability and validity of this factor structure. Factor analyses were conducted for baseline (N = 21,537) and post-concussion (N = 560) data, yielding “Memory” (Verbal and Visual) and “Speed” (Visual Motor Speed and Reaction Time) Factors; inclusion of Total Symptom Scores resulted in a third discrete factor. Speed and Memory z-scores were calculated, and test–retest reliability (using intra-class correlation coefficients) at 1 month (0.88/0.81), 1 year (0.85/0.75), and 2 years (0.76/0.74) were higher than published data …
Scenarios Of Gloregionalization And Post-Globalization In The Beginning Of The 21st Century: The Bric Forum, Juan Gonzalez Garcia
Scenarios Of Gloregionalization And Post-Globalization In The Beginning Of The 21st Century: The Bric Forum, Juan Gonzalez Garcia
Asian Review
The BRIC Forum (Brazil, Russia, India and China) has projected itself from a simple term that groups together a series of countries that share the quality of having emerging economies, to a category of analysis used in order to comprehend an actor in economic and political international relations that can generate a counterbalance to the unipolar structure under the hegemony of the United States. The new facets of globalization and regionalism have boosted a series of centripetal forces that shake the foundations of the old world order inherited during the post-Cold War era, threatening to shape new spaces of cooperation, …
Identifying Emotional Disturbance: Implications For Consistent Practice, Ramona L. Patillo
Identifying Emotional Disturbance: Implications For Consistent Practice, Ramona L. Patillo
PCOM Psychology Dissertations
Determining eligibility for special education services under the educational classification of Emotional Disturbance (ED) has historically posed difficulties for school psychologists. The federal law provides vague eligibility criteria and a clear exclusion for students with Social Maladjustment (SM). This study evaluated the results of an online survey that required participants to identify behaviors that are most commonly associated with the constructs of ED and SM. This study further proposed to assess levels of comfort in determining eligibility based on a constellation of behavioral symptoms presented in short case vignettes. The study sought to reveal any differences in symptom identification based …
Unesco And The U.S. At The Palestinian Impasse: Using A Boomerang Pattern To Public Diplomacy, Oscar Castellanos Del Collado
Unesco And The U.S. At The Palestinian Impasse: Using A Boomerang Pattern To Public Diplomacy, Oscar Castellanos Del Collado
Exchange: The Journal of Public Diplomacy
There is vast literature on the influence of nonstate actors (NSAs) on intergovernmental organizations (IGOs). Successful cases have been documented in which transnational advocacy networks (TANs) use the platforms provided by intergovernmental organizations for their own participation in treaty making, agenda-setting, policy formation and implementation, and to change repressive and norm-violating states’ behavior. However, little has been said about IGOs engaging NSAs to influence their own member states’ preferences. This paper uses the case of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the United States on the eve of Palestine’s admission as a member state of the …
Diplomacy 2.0: The Future Of Social Media In Nation Branding, Britney Harris
Diplomacy 2.0: The Future Of Social Media In Nation Branding, Britney Harris
Exchange: The Journal of Public Diplomacy
The importance of social media as a tool of public diplomacy has gained traction in U.S. foreign policy initiatives. The Obama administration’s creation of “Diplomacy 2.0” has brought the use of Twitter and other social media sites to the front line of public diplomacy practices. This paper looks at why social media are an effective tool for two-way communication and how it can enhance U.S. public diplomacy initiatives. The author examines case studies of successful implementation of Twitter diplomacy and the use of Twitter for crisis management. Finally, the author concludes and discusses policy prescriptions, including Twitter implementation, relevant to …
The Impact Of Childhood Residential Stability On Adult Homelessness And Mental Health, Joli Brown
The Impact Of Childhood Residential Stability On Adult Homelessness And Mental Health, Joli Brown
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Over the last 20 years, homeless families have increased dramatically in the United States. Literature on homelessness has traditionally focused on single men/adults with severe mental illness. Using data collected for a local mental health organization and social service agency providing trauma and case management services to homeless mothers with a history of trauma, my goal is to determine whether group home, foster care stays and episodes of homelessness prior to 18 years of age would increase the likelihood of respondents lifetime number of times homeless, number of traumatic events over one's lifetime and depression 30 days prior to the …
