Perceptions Of Delinquency Among Male Athletes And Non-Athletes: A Qualitative Investigation, Humphrey Nartey Jan 2013

Perceptions Of Delinquency Among Male Athletes And Non-Athletes: A Qualitative Investigation, Humphrey Nartey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It is presumed that the involvement in sports helps to deter delinquency, yet athletes who seemingly have it all engage in destructive delinquent lifestyles (Savini, 2008). Many theorists contend that the "jock identity" or "sport hubris" is largely responsible, as people think they will be treated more favorably if they are athletes (Miller et al., 2006). This perception raises the question of whether athletes know and understand the constructs of delinquency. Thus the purpose of this study was to examine male athletes' and non-athletes' perceptions of the minor and major substrates of delinquency. A semi-structured interview was used to gather …

Religious Identity And The Provision Of Public Goods: Evidence From The Indian Princely States, Latika Chaudhary, Jared Rubin Jan 2013

Religious Identity And The Provision Of Public Goods: Evidence From The Indian Princely States, Latika Chaudhary, Jared Rubin

ESI Working Papers

Religious identity affects preferences and can consequently affect policy. We propose two mechanisms through which a ruler's religious identity can affect public good provision: i) greater provision of goods in regions where more subjects are the ruler's co-religionists, and ii) lower provision of goods where private markets provide a substitute to the ruler's co-religionists. Empirically, identifying the causal effect of religious identity on policy is often impossible, since the religious identity of rulers rarely changes over time and place. We address this problem by exploiting the variation in the religion of rulers in the Indian Princely States in the early …

Crafting Identity, Collaboration, And Relevance For Academic Librarians Using Communities Of Practice, Nora Belzowski, J. Parker Ladwig, Thurston Miller

Collaborative Librarianship

Faculty/librarian collaboration is vital for librarians to remain integral to the academy. We now have an opportunity to change how we perceive ourselves and how we are perceived by faculty and administrators. There are viable solutions for expanding the role of the librarian in ways that could lead to better faculty partnerships. First, librarians must be grounded in a shared purpose and professional identity and establish a contextual framework for our own professional ‘boundaries.’ We cannot create an intersection with the knowledge and experience of others if we do not have an understanding of our own frame. Interviews and investigation …

Scholar-Librarian Collaboration In The Publication Of Scholarly Materials, Craig Harkema, Brent Nelson Jan 2013

Scholar-Librarian Collaboration In The Publication Of Scholarly Materials, Craig Harkema, Brent Nelson

Collaborative Librarianship

Recent developments in scholarly publication and the new directions being pursued in both humanities departments and libraries in the production of digital content provide opportunity for scholars and libraries to explore new models for working together to produce and disseminate scholarly materials. We offer as a first step toward a model for publication the case of Opuscula: Short Texts of the Middle Ages and Renaissance (OSTMAR), a hybrid form of publication that leverages the university library infrastructure to create a platform for the publication of scholarly primary materials, an area of publication formerly reserved for the commercial press. This model …

Teaching Law And Digital Age Legal Practice With An Ai And Law Seminar: Justice, Lawyering And Legal Education In The Digital Age, Kevin D. Ashley Jan 2013

Teaching Law And Digital Age Legal Practice With An Ai And Law Seminar: Justice, Lawyering And Legal Education In The Digital Age, Kevin D. Ashley

Articles

A seminar on Artificial Intelligence ("Al") and Law can teach law students lessons about legal reasoning and legal practice in the digital age. Al and Law is a subfield of Al/computer science research that focuses on designing computer programs—computational models—that perform legal reasoning. These computational models are used in building tools to assist in legal practice and pedagogy and in studying legal reasoning in order to contribute to cognitive science and jurisprudence. Today, subject to a number of qualifications, computer programs can reason with legal rules, apply legal precedents, and even argue like a legal advocate.

This article provides a …

Measuring Corporate Social Responsibility Through Organizational Values: A Scale Validation Study, Adria D. Toliver Jan 2013

Measuring Corporate Social Responsibility Through Organizational Values: A Scale Validation Study, Adria D. Toliver

Psychology Dissertations

There is increasing interest in corporate social responsibility among researchers and practitioners. The corporate social responsibility construct has been around for several decades, but recent public corporate scandals have brought corporate social responsibility back to the forefront of many discussions. The most prominent conceptualization of corporate social responsibility suggests that an organization has economic, legal, ethical, and philanthropic responsibilities to fulfill (Carroll, 1979). The problem with current models of corporate social responsibility is that they are skewed towards the financial responsibility of an organization. Although this is one important aspect of an organization's responsibilities, it is not the only or …

Towards A Framework Convention On Global Health: A Transformative Agenda For Global Health Justice, Lawrence O. Gostin, Eric A. Friedman Jan 2013

Towards A Framework Convention On Global Health: A Transformative Agenda For Global Health Justice, Lawrence O. Gostin, Eric A. Friedman

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

International law has responded weakly to the inequities in health care, public health, and the broader determinates of health that collectively cause the greatest loss of lives and human potential every year. Approximately one-third of global deaths can be attributed to enduring and unconscionable inequities. Despite significant progress in improving global health over the past several decades, these inequities persist. Current global governance for health is inadequate to the task of resolving these inequities, from lack of accountability and enforcement to inadequate funding and the absence of leadership required to respond to the threats to health that arise from other …

Predictors Of Adjustment To September 11th, 2001 And The Anthrax Attacks, Jeffrey Nathanael Swanson Jan 2013

Predictors Of Adjustment To September 11th, 2001 And The Anthrax Attacks, Jeffrey Nathanael Swanson

Psychology Dissertations

While the effects of September 11th, 2001 have been heavily studied, effects of the Anthrax attacks that directly followed has not been a widespread focus of research. This set of events, however, may be more representative of terrorism as it exists across the world, and there is both theoretical and empirical evidence indicating that responses to the Anthrax attacks may be worse than to 9/11. The following secondary data analysis was conducted to identify factors that predict adjustment to the Anthrax attacks among individuals with only vicarious exposure. Based on available empirical and theoretical data, it was hypothesized that individual …

What Are The Long-Term Consequences Of Peer Victimization? Changes In Biological Functioning And Its Effects On Psychological And Physical Health, Priya Anapurna Iyer Jan 2013

What Are The Long-Term Consequences Of Peer Victimization? Changes In Biological Functioning And Its Effects On Psychological And Physical Health, Priya Anapurna Iyer

Psychology Dissertations

Prior research has documented long-term psychological problems (e.g. emotional distress, anxiety, and depression; Kochenderfer-Ladd & Wardrop, 2001) experienced as a result of being bullied as an adolescent. Although being a recipient of peer victimization has been related to psychological health, limited research has looked at the association between peer victimization and physical health problems. Even fewer studies have investigated the relationship between being bullied and health outcomes over time. This dissertation examined whether peer victimization in early adolescence lead to changes in neuroendocrine functioning (as assessed by cortisol) and physical health outcomes several years later. Adolescents and their parents (N …

Examining The Effects Of Health Behaviors And Emotions On Medical Care Seeking And Avoidant Behaviors In Older Adults, Hollie Beth Pellosmaa Jan 2013

Examining The Effects Of Health Behaviors And Emotions On Medical Care Seeking And Avoidant Behaviors In Older Adults, Hollie Beth Pellosmaa

Psychology Theses

There has been a dearth of information that explains how an individual's emotional reactions to their illness symptoms affects their care seeking behaviors. The overall aims of this study were to elucidate the emotional and behavioral predictors for care seeking in older adults, and describe the reasons that they choose not to seek care. Cross-sectional data from a larger, longitudinal study with older adults were analyzed. Participants (N = 267, mean age=72 years) living in a retirement community in a northeastern state were interviewed. Differences were found in health behaviors between care seekers and non-care seekers; care seekers were positively …

The Impact Of Peer Victimization On Adolescent Inflammatory Markers, Allyson Antoinette Arana Jan 2013

The Impact Of Peer Victimization On Adolescent Inflammatory Markers, Allyson Antoinette Arana

Psychology Theses

For years, research has linked peer victimization to various outcomes, ranging from those in the psychological realm (e.g., depression, anxiety) to physical health symptoms (e.g., frequent doctor visits, abdominal pain). While there are many possible mechanisms responsible for this relationship, this study focused on immune system dysregulation, specifically concerning the inflammatory markers interleukin-6 (IL-6) and C-reactive protein (CRP). Prior research has found that environmental stress is related to increased production of these markers (e.g., Danese et al., 2007; Kiecolt-Glaser et al., 2003). Furthermore, elevated levels of IL-6 and CRP have been associated with health problems such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, …

Masticatory Performance In Those With Temporomandibular Joint And Muscle Disorder, Celeste Noelle Sanders Jan 2013

Masticatory Performance In Those With Temporomandibular Joint And Muscle Disorder, Celeste Noelle Sanders

Psychology Theses

Tempormandibular Joint and Muscle Disorder (TMJMD) occurs when dysfunction arises in the joints and muscles associated with the functionality of the jaw. Apart from many other complications, one of the problems that TMJMD patients face is difficulty in masticatory performance (i.e., chewing). A population of acute TMJMD patients (N = 408) participating in an early intervention treatment program was randomized into three intervention groups: a high-risk biobehavioral group, a high-risk self-care group; and a low-risk non-intervention group. These individuals were assessed for the purposes of elucidating predictors of masticatory performance and investigating the effectiveness of a biobehavioral intervention with individuals …

Housing Patterns, Academic Performance And School Choice: An Inquiry Into The Relocation Experiences Of African-American Families, Courtney Jones-Hall Jan 2013

Housing Patterns, Academic Performance And School Choice: An Inquiry Into The Relocation Experiences Of African-American Families, Courtney Jones-Hall

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This qualitative inquiry explored the educational relocation experiences of AfricanAmerican families residing in predominately-White and northern Gwinnett County, Georgia, who relocated to pursue improved educational opportunities for their children. For poor families or African- American families with limited resources, school choice is determined largely by where one lives. Historical oppression at the local, state and federal level has encouraged the concentration of African-American families into segregated communities and segregated housing patterns (Massey & Denton, 1998; Rice, 2009; Squires & Kim, 1995), which are often associated with educational inequality (Royce, 2009). The historical oppression and racial injustices in society challenges us …

Three Essays On: Cancelling Liquidity, Information Generation And Learning By Holding Privately Placed Securities, And Information Generation, Learning And The Trading Dynamics Of Institutional Traders During The 2007-2008 Financial Crisis, Ethan Watson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation consists of three essays on cancelling liquidity, information generation and learning by holding private placements, and information generation, learning and the trading dynamics of institutional traders during the 2007-2008 financial crisis. The first essay examines cancellation activity of limit orders. We document a two-fold increase in limit order cancellation activity over the last decade, and study the determinants of cancellations and the change in cancellation activity through time. We also examine the impact of order cancellation on market quality. We use an instrumental variable approach and estimate a simultaneous equations model to overcome simultaneity in the trading process. …

Psychological Flexibility In Migraine Patients: The Role Of Acceptance And Values-Based Action, Heather Lillian Wolfort Foote Jan 2013

Psychological Flexibility In Migraine Patients: The Role Of Acceptance And Values-Based Action, Heather Lillian Wolfort Foote

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

According to the World Health Report 2001, mental and neurological disorders account for 30.80% of healthy years of life lost to disability; migraine alone accounts for 1.40% of that percentage. In addition to the functional impairment the attacks cause, migraine frequently co-occurs with other psychiatric disorders and is associated with other psychological factors. Related psychological factors include avoidance of negative private events (experiential avoidance) and persistent behaviors that are counterproductive to one's personal values. Recent studies of patients with other forms of chronic pain suggest that these behaviors are associated with poor functioning and that techniques fostering "psychological flexibility" may …

Dialects, Orthography And Society, John M. Clifton Jan 2013

Dialects, Orthography And Society, John M. Clifton

Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session

While there is broad consensus that both linguistic and non-linguistic factors play a role in orthography, there is disagreement as to the relative weight played by the two sets of factors. In this paper, I present case studies from four languages, two from Papua New Guinea and two from Bangladesh, in which orthography interacts with dialectal differences. In two of the studies, orthography is used to show the unity of the communities, while in the other two it is used to establish separate identities. This interaction of orthography and group identity follows naturally from the claim that orthography is primarily …

Employee Satisfaction And Employee Productivity: Finding The Link, Diane Slyman

Theses and Graduate Projects

In this era of economic challenges corporate leadership struggles to do more with less, while maintaining the delicate balance between employee productivity and employee satisfaction. The focus of this research paper is to determine the degree to which employee job satisfaction truly impacts employee productivity. Can it really be as simple as to increase employee satisfaction in order to get them to produce more? The study further examines satisfaction and proiductivity measurements for a department within a healthcare administration department. While a limited sample size, the department's survey results are compared to the literature review relative to top satisfaction drivers …

Keeping The Doctor Away: Experimental Evidence On Investment In Preventative Health Products, Jennifer Meredith, Jonathan Robinson, Sarah Walker, Bruce Wydick Jan 2013

Keeping The Doctor Away: Experimental Evidence On Investment In Preventative Health Products, Jennifer Meredith, Jonathan Robinson, Sarah Walker, Bruce Wydick

Economics

Household investment in preventative health products in developing countries is typically low even though the returns to such products are high. In this paper, we experimentally estimate demand curves for health products and test whether (1) information about health risk, (2) cash liquidity, (3) peer effects, and (4) intra-household differences in preferences affect demand. In our main experiment in Kenya involving children’s shoes - critical for preventing hookworm infection - price is by far the most important predictor of purchase. Providing liquidity and targeting women also increased demand. Information had no effect even though we find that genuine learning occurred. …

The Adjustment Of Asian American Families To The U.S. Context: The Ecology Of Strengths And Stress, Yan Ruth Xia, Kieu Anh Do, Xiaolin Xie

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

The number of Asian American families is on the rise, making it 4.6% of the total US population. Asian American families are also a diverse group, comprising many different ancestries, cultural variations, and countries of origin. However, there remains a paucity of research focusing on Asian American Families. The media’s depiction of them as a Model Minority is doing a disservice to this population group. Because of this stereotype, many issues and challenges that this group encounters may not gain adequate attention. Some of these issues include acculturative stress, intimate partner violence, lack of a social support network, and intergenerational …

The chapter examines their strengths and resiliency, along with the ecology of stress that influences family dynamics.

“I’Ve Devoted My Entire Life To My Daughter—And She Knows It”: Exploration Of Identity Development Among Now-Adult Navajo Native American Adolescent Mothers, Rochelle L. Dalla, Kathryne Bailey, Ashley Cunningham, Nicolette Green, Jenna L. Vyhlidal Jan 2013

Vyhlidal

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

n 1992 (n = 21) and 1995 (n = 8), the principal investigator collected data from 29 reservation-residing Navajo Native American teenage mothers. A primary goal of the 1992 and 1995 investigations (Time 1) was to examine the identity status of the young women in relation to commitment to the maternal role using Marcia’s (1980) framework. Results revealed that an approximately equal number of participants could be classified as achieved, moratorium, foreclosed, and diffused (see Dalla, 2000). In 2007 (Time 2), the principal investigator returned to collect follow-up data at the Navajo Reservation, where she interviewed 21 (72%) of the …

Let’S Discuss: Teaching Students About Discussions, Eve Brank, Lindsey Wylie Jan 2013

Let’S Discuss: Teaching Students About Discussions, Eve Brank, Lindsey Wylie

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

Research consistently demonstrates the benefits of employing classroom discussions; however, there has been less attention given to teaching students about discussions. The current research compared 2 advanced social psychology courses: 1 without (control) and 1 with (experimental) a week devoted to learning about and discussing discussions. Several different indicators showed marked improvements for the experimental group as compared to the control group. The differences between the two classes were particularly noticeable at the beginning of the semester. Even though the control group was able to eventually obtain similar scores, the differences at the beginning of the semester suggest that students …

Spiritual Well-Being And Its Relationship To Resilience In Young People: A Mixed Methods Case Study, Lindsay Smith, Ruth Webber, Erica Defrain

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

Questions have arisen recently about the role of spiritual well-being in strengthening resilience of youth. To explore this association, this case study focused on the relationships and connectedness of young people who attend one religious organization as a means of enhancing their spiritual well-being. In line with the purposes of an instrumental case study, different sources of data (quantitative and qualitative) were collected on the phenomenon of interest—spiritual well-being. A theoretical purposive sample of 65 people participated in the study. A mixed methods research approach guided this case study, which incorporated both single- and multicase study techniques. Through an abductive …
