Cultural competency has emerged as a framework for understanding health disparities among racial and ethnic groups in particular, but also for women, the elderly, sexual orientation and gender identity, people with disabilities, and religious minorities. Although there are several definitions of cultural competency, each emphasizes the need for healthcare systems and providers to be aware of and responsive to patients’ cultural perspectives and backgrounds. Currently, fewer than 15% of children between the ages of 4–8 years consume the recommended levels of fruit and vegetables. In order to address this serious public health issue, a variety of nutrition programs have been implemented across the United States which have varied in their success. The present research analyzed the effectiveness of providing fruit and vegetable exposure as part of a school nutrition program. Kindergarten students at two schools (N = 59) were exposed to interactive activities about healthy eating and physical activity. In addition, those at one school (n = 29) were exposed to a variety …

Emotion understanding is a necessary ability for young children to develop, as this competence helps children navigate their social world. Parents offer a rich environment for children to learn about emotion, but to date little is known about how interparental conflict relates to children's growing emotion understanding. From a family systems perspective, it is important to consider not only how conflict behaviors may be connected with children' emotion understanding directly, but also indirectly through changes in parenting behaviors. Although archivists have traditionally seen themselves as passive recipients and caretakers of records, there is an increasing recognition of the power and influence archivists have in shaping the historical record and collective memory. This recognition has led to calls for archivists to use their power to promote social justice and government accountability. One important way to do this is to ensure maximum access to government records. Throughout the verdant hills of the Pyrenees, the foundation of Basque culture is built on the foundations of the etxeak - the immense houses that form the centerpiece of Basque farms and symbolize the incredible cultural inheritance of the Basque people. However, little is understood in regards to counter accuracy due to just recently becoming routinely used. We evaluated several approaches for the automated detection and mapping of trees and treeline in an alpine environment. Using multiple remote sensing platforms and software programs, we evaluated both pixel-based and object-based classification approaches in combination with high-resolution multispectral imagery and LiDAR-derived tree height data. The study area in North Cascades National Park included over 10,000 hectares of some of the most rugged terrain in the conterminous U.S. Through the use of the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), differences in illumination conditions created by steep slopes and tall trees were minimized. This shift, while easing demand constraints at larger airports, will increase the number of flight segments above Puget Sound altering the land uses below each new segment. Hunter-gatherer groups altered the Gulf of Georgia landscape for more than three thousand years (4200-1000 BP). Much research has focused on what has come to be known as the Developed Coast Pattern. However, the Middle Pacific Period (3800-1800 BP) along the Pacific Northwest Coast experienced dramatic cultural evolution for nearly 2000 years prior to the onset of the Developed Coast Pattern. Critics of federalization argue that the federal duplication of state criminal laws places an undue burden on the federal courts and there are too many total federal crimes. Federalism proponents claim that the federal overlap threatens the states' roles as laboratories of democracy. This thesis examines criminal cases in the federal court in the Western District of Washington in 2010 and finds concurrent cases are regularly charged by U.S. attorneys in cooperation with state prosecutors. However, the impact on the court is a direct result of the discretion that U.S. attorneys exercise in filing concurrent cases.

The current study examined the persuasiveness (based on the Elaboration Likelihood Model) of user comments on the evaluation of an Internet news article. Participants reviewed a news article concerning the implementation of a new comprehensive exam for all senior-level undergraduates, which was manipulated such that the news article information was either self-relevant (evoking central route processing) or self-irrelevant (evoking peripheral route processing). In addition, comments that followed the news article were also manipulated by both strength and quantity. Glacial forelands are harsh environments where incipient pedogenesis provides the basis for vegetation establishment and succession. Myriad local factors make discerning major influences on this process difficult. The Easton foreland on Mt. Baker, Washington, was investigated, where till has been deposited over the last one-hundred years. Easton foreland soils were sampled for in situ characteristics and laboratory measures, creating a multi-variable dataset of quantitative and qualitative data. In 1970—more than 40 years ago—the Urban Mass Transportation Act created a national policy to promote universally accessible transportation. PL 91-453, stated it as clearly as possible: “elderly and handicapped” persons have the same right as other persons to use mass transportation facilities and service. This study aimed to understand how the relationship between awe and prosociality is impacted by empathic concern and emotion regulation. Witnessing others in need and feeling a sense of connectedness towards them may elicit empathic concern and lead to prosocial behavior. However, emotion regulation impacts the capacity to focus on others. Greater emotion regulation difficulty has been associated with greater self-focus and may interfere with considering the perspective of others. Experiences of awe have been shown to not only decrease self-focus but may also increase connectedness to others, promoting empathic concern, and subsequently prosocial outcomes. The ability of homing pigeons to return to their loft from unknown places has fascinated scientists for centuries. It is well established that homing pigeons, like migratory birds, posses an innate magnetic inclination compass to determine direction by measuring the angle between the magnetic field vector and the Earth's surface. Recent work has indicated that the avian magnetic compass is light mediated and appears to mediate magnetic information to the brain.
