Public Space And Urban Life: A Spatial Ethnography Of A Portland Plaza, Katrina Leigh Johnston Jan 2013

Public Space And Urban Life: A Spatial Ethnography Of A Portland Plaza, Katrina Leigh Johnston

Dissertations and Theses

The Urban Center Plaza at Portland State University is a high profile place situated in downtown Portland, Oregon. In some ways it is the ideal university plaza providing space for eating, conversing, or limited recreational activity. It is a place that has been studied before, but not in a more in-depth method incorporating quantitative and qualitative analyses. It is also a place that has gone through several stages of development and is the target of many opinions based on casual observations, at times due to these changes. This thesis focuses on an ethnography of place in this particular plaza in …

The Influence Of Awe On Prosociality: Considering The Role Of Empathic Concern And Emotion Regulation, Erika Lutz Jan 2013

The Influence Of Awe On Prosociality: Considering The Role Of Empathic Concern And Emotion Regulation, Erika Lutz

WWU Graduate School Collection

This study aimed to understand how the relationship between awe and prosociality is impacted by empathic concern and emotion regulation. Witnessing others in need and feeling a sense of connectedness towards them may elicit empathic concern and lead to prosocial behavior. However, emotion regulation impacts the capacity to focus on others. Greater emotion regulation difficulty has been associated with greater self-focus and may interfere with considering the perspective of others. Experiences of awe have been shown to not only decrease self-focus but may also increase connectedness to others, promoting empathic concern, and subsequently prosocial outcomes. We predicted that eliciting awe …

The Effect Of Visual Wulst Lesions And Trigeminal Nerve Sectioning On The Discrimination Of Magnetic Inclination In The Homing Pigeon (Columba Livia), Merissa Acerbi Jan 2013

The Effect Of Visual Wulst Lesions And Trigeminal Nerve Sectioning On The Discrimination Of Magnetic Inclination In The Homing Pigeon (Columba Livia), Merissa Acerbi

Honors Projects

The ability of homing pigeons to return to their loft from unknown places has fascinated scientists for centuries. It is well established that homing pigeons, like migratory birds, posses an innate magnetic inclination compass to determine direction by measuring the angle between the magnetic field vector and the Earth's surface. Recent work has indicated that the avian magnetic compass is light mediated and appears to mediate magnetic information to the brain. This occurs via a visual pathway with processing in the visual Wulst area of the forebrain. There is, however, also evidence from other avian species that magnetic direction may …

Carrots, Sticks, And Salience, Brian Galle Jan 2013

Carrots, Sticks, And Salience, Brian Galle

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

This Article considers the second-best design of Pigouvian taxes and subsidies in the presence of agents who are imperfectly aware of the instrument. Until very recently, the price instrument literature has assumed perfect rationality, and even the handful of prior attempts to account for “hidden” prices focus mainly on the income tax. I extend these efforts in several directions. First, I show that the best available instrument for correcting negative externalities is often one whose price is partially adjusted upwards -- or, in the case of subsidies, downwards -- to counter-act the neglect of irrational actors. In addition, I argue …

Information Sources In Relation To Information Quality, Information-Seeking, And Uncertainty In The Context Of Healthcare Reform, Jennifer L. Bevan Jan 2013

Information Sources In Relation To Information Quality, Information-Seeking, And Uncertainty In The Context Of Healthcare Reform, Jennifer L. Bevan

Communication Faculty Books and Book Chapters

This exploratory study examines information-seeking about the 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (i.e. healthcare reform) in relation to the potential barriers of uncertainty, uncertainty discrepancy, and low health self-efficacy. Adult United States participants completed an anonymous online survey about their perceptions and understanding of healthcare reform. Results confirmed recent literature, suggesting a complex relationship between information-seeking and uncertainty. Specifically, for this sample, significant positive relationships were observed between information-seeking about healthcare reform and uncertainty, uncertainty discrepancy, health self-efficacy. Further, uncertainty discrepancy was the potential barrier that accounted for the most variance in predicting information-seeking.Implications of these findings for improving …

Lateralization Of Simulated Sources And Echoes On The Basis Of Interaural Differences Of Level, Raymond H. Dye Jr, Jacquelyn P. Hill, Leslie M. Ryan, Alexander E. Cupler, Kevin M. Bannon

Psychology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

This experiment assessed the relative weights given to source and echo pulses lateralized on the basis of interaural differences of level (IDLs). Separate conditions were run in which the to-be-judged target was the first (source) or second (echo) pulse. Each trial consisted of two intervals; the first presented a 3000-Hz diotic pulse that marked the intracranial midline and the pitch of the target frequency. The second presented the sequence of a source followed by an echo. Target frequency was always 3000 Hz, while the non-target pulse was presented at 1500, 3000, or 5000 Hz. Delays between the source and echo …

Hyperspectral Image Classification Using A Spectral-Spatial Sparse Coding Model, Ender Oguslu, Guoqing Zhou, Jiang Li, Lorenzo Bruzzone (Ed.)

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

We present a sparse coding based spectral-spatial classification model for hyperspectral image (HSI) datasets. The proposed method consists of an efficient sparse coding method in which the l1/lq regularized multi-class logistic regression technique was utilized to achieve a compact representation of hyperspectral image pixels for land cover classification. We applied the proposed algorithm to a HSI dataset collected at the Kennedy Space Center and compared our algorithm to a recently proposed method, Gaussian process maximum likelihood (GP-ML) classifier. Experimental results show that the proposed method can achieve significantly better performances than the GP-ML classifier when training data …

Assistive Technology: Fixing Humans, Petros J. Katsioloudis, Millie Jones

STEMPS Faculty Publications

The need for assistive technology--technology that assists persons with disabilities--is great. At no time has there been a greater need to provide assistive technologies than to assist the thousands of military veterans returning home from the Middle East with a range of physical and mental disabilities. Mobility impairment is a significant concern for many returning veterans. Assistive technologies are playing a major role in assisting war veterans returning with physical limitations through the loss of a limb or, in many cases, several limbs. This article presents the history and background of assistive technology and how mobile- and computer-assistive technologies can …

The Development Of Intimate Partner Relationships Among Men Sexually Abused As Children, Laura Beltran-Medina Jan 2013

The Development Of Intimate Partner Relationships Among Men Sexually Abused As Children, Laura Beltran-Medina

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

This phenomenological study sought to understand the experience of seven men who came forward to contribute and discuss their intimate partner relationships for what relational intimacy could reveal about themselves, the meaning of intimate partnership, and their understanding of being in intimate relationships. The theoretical assumptions applied to this study are: (a) Childhood sexual abuse interferes with the ability to achieve deeper experiences of idealized love; (b) Negative effects of adult relational attachment are manifested in anxiety related to sexual intimacy, fear of emotional intimacy, and inability to fulfill dependency needs such as trust, love, and security; and (c) There …

Early Effects Of The Tomatis Listening Method In Children With Attention Deficit, Liliana Sacarin Jan 2013

Early Effects Of The Tomatis Listening Method In Children With Attention Deficit, Liliana Sacarin

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

This study investigated the early effects of the Tomatis Method, hypothesizing improvement in processing speed, phonological awareness, reading efficiency, attention, behavior and brain physiology by the end of Phase 1 of the Tomatis Method. This study documented the effects of the first phase of the Tomatis Method on children with ADD ages 7-13. Of the 25 participants, 15 received solely the Tomatis treatment while 10 served as controls and were stabilized on ADD medication three months prior to and throughout the study. Therefore, this research study compared Tomatis versus non-Tomatis intervention, not ADD medication treatment with Tomatis intervention. The Tomatis …

Trauma, Deviant Sexual Arousal, And Sexual Aggression In Adolescent Male Sexual Offenders, Kerry Elizabeth Nelligan Jan 2013

Trauma, Deviant Sexual Arousal, And Sexual Aggression In Adolescent Male Sexual Offenders, Kerry Elizabeth Nelligan

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Juvenile sexual abusers commit a significant proportion of the sexual offenses perpetrated in the United States each year. Researchers have identified several variables related to the etiology of sexual offending behavior in adolescent males. For example, there is evidence that both trauma and deviant sexual arousal have been independently linked to sexual aggression committed by adolescent sexual abusers. However, an etiological model that accounts for all of the variance with regard to sexual offending behavior or sexual recidivism in Juvenile Sex Offenders (JSOs) has not yet been developed. In the current study, a pre-existing data set of adjudicated JSOs who …

My Journey From Physician To Psychologist: Relational Touch In Psychotherapy, Brita S. Reed Jan 2013

My Journey From Physician To Psychologist: Relational Touch In Psychotherapy, Brita S. Reed

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

A physician's armamentarium includes the presence of the tool of touch which is used not only to diagnose and to heal, but also to reassure patients that they are safe and well cared for in the hands of the physician. The use of touch in the practice of psychology, however, is relatively proscribed. In this essay, I examine how we, as psychologists, can best "hold" our clients without the use of touch. In the first part of this essay, I explore some theoretical considerations on relational touch in psychotherapy. I define relational touch as touch that occurs between people and …

How Class Background Influences Negative Countertransference In Outreach Therapy, Kathyn Anna Patterson Jan 2013

How Class Background Influences Negative Countertransference In Outreach Therapy, Kathyn Anna Patterson

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

This dissertation examines how the class background of social workers and doctoral level psychologists influences negative countertransference towards working with the poor in an outreach setting. A literature review explores countertransference from a psychoanalytic stance and showcases the development of the two disciplines, psychology and social work, and how class has directly or implicitly been a factor. Finally, the review discusses outreach therapy, its advantages and limitations, and how doing this work can impact clinicians. Participants for the study were master's level clinicians, current and former predoctoral psychology interns, postdoctoral fellows, and other doctoral level clinicians who were currently or …

Addressing Lesbian, Gay, And Bisexual Bullying: A Mindfulness-Based Intervention Manual, Melanie L. Ernould Jan 2013

Addressing Lesbian, Gay, And Bisexual Bullying: A Mindfulness-Based Intervention Manual, Melanie L. Ernould

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

The following dissertation offers an intervention to combat the negative effects that bullying has
on lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) youth in high school. The literature review demonstrates the need for such an intervention through examples of the damaging effects that such bullying has on LGB youth. These incidents of bullying are far too common in American schools, and the effects far reaching, as the media has been saturated with stories of “gay teen suicides” in recent years. While affirmative interventions are currently the status quo for work with LGB populations, it can be argued that these are limited. In …

A Look Into The Lived Experiences Of College Students With Asperger's Disorder, Joshua Bryan Lafortune Jan 2013

A Look Into The Lived Experiences Of College Students With Asperger's Disorder, Joshua Bryan Lafortune

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Currently there is confusion about how to meet the educational needs of students diagnosed with Asperger's Disorder (AD). This is a growing concern for schools where there has been a significant increase in the use of this diagnostic category (Barnhill, 2001). This research project was developed to investigate the lived experiences of college students with a previously identified diagnosis of AD. The aim of this study was to gain a greater understanding of how these students managed the academic and social demands of middle school and high school. Of particular importance were the transitional years during adolescence, where social competence …

"Problems faced by society in today's global infrastructure are more complex than ever; these social, political and environmental issues require an interdisciplinary skill set to even begin to understand them let alone tackle them with a comprehensive strategy. Higher Education can better prepare people for real world problem solving by interacting in cross-disciplinary or interdisciplinary conversations with peers, faculty, colleagues etc. Professors from across the social sciences at Eastern Washington University that are engaged in an interdisciplinary conversation were interviewed for this qualitative case study. The dialogue generated from these interviews confirms that there are many intrinsic as well as …

Good Lovin': The Effects Of Stressors On Sexual Satisfaction Among Non-Cohabitating, Cohabiting, And Married Couples, Wylie E. Rhoads Jan 2013

Good Lovin': The Effects Of Stressors On Sexual Satisfaction Among Non-Cohabitating, Cohabiting, And Married Couples, Wylie E. Rhoads

EWU Masters Thesis Collection

"The negative relationship between stress and sexual satisfaction is one that has not been studied extensively when it comes to the differences between non-cohabitating, cohabitating, and married couples. It is important to understand how stress may affect sexual satisfaction in different groups so that each group can develop the proper coping mechanisms to defend against the damage stress can cause. The present study examined whether married couples would report more sexual satisfaction before and after a stress- induced priming task due to more effective coping strategies compared to non- cohabitating and cohabitating couples. Men and women in sexually active, monogamous …

"Drunk And Hot Chick": The Effects Of Stereotype-Consistent Priming On Stereotypes Regarding Social Sorority And Fraternity Members, Tasia Duske Jan 2013

"Drunk And Hot Chick": The Effects Of Stereotype-Consistent Priming On Stereotypes Regarding Social Sorority And Fraternity Members, Tasia Duske

EWU Masters Thesis Collection

"Although members in social sororities and fraternities have historically been praised for contributing to the development of leadership skills and striving for excellence, they have also been the target of negative stereotypes and prejudice (Barlow, 1996; Wells & Corts, 2008). The present study examined the effects of stereotype-consistent priming on stereotypes regarding sorority and fraternity members by using a 2 (experimenter gender: male, female) x 3 (t-shirt priming condition: Greek letter/stereotype-confirming, Greek letter only, or plaint-shirt) between subjects design. It was proposed that study participants would provide the most negative evaluation of sorority and fraternity members when an evaluation of …

Validation Of The Memory Attention Concentration Evaluation, Andrea Griechen Jan 2013

Validation Of The Memory Attention Concentration Evaluation, Andrea Griechen

EWU Masters Thesis Collection

"Psychological professionals recommend following a number of steps to examine a client's claim of malingering, including the use of standardized measures (Binder, 2002). Psychometric testing is available to assist with the evaluation for malingering. The Portland Digit Recognition Test (PORT; Binder & Willis, 1991) has been found to be a valid measure of a client's motivation to perform inadequately on memory evaluations and thus, detects clients attempting to memory malinger. The PORT takes approximately 45 minutes to administer. A shortened computer version of the PORT is the Memory Attention Concentration Evaluation (MACE) which was created to cut down on administration …

The Relationship Between Time Estimation And An Individual's Ability To Delay Gratification, Erin Kamien Jan 2013

The Relationship Between Time Estimation And An Individual's Ability To Delay Gratification, Erin Kamien

EWU Masters Thesis Collection

"This study examines the relationship between an individual's ability to accurately estimate the passage of time and his or her ability to delay gratification. In this study, undergraduate students were asked to estimate time intervals using a time estimation computer program and to provide a verbal estimation of time intervals. These scores were then correlated with delay of gratification measures, designated by their score on a delay of gratification inventory, and their decision to receive extra credit points immediately and end their participation, or to return and collect an additional half of their reward a day later. It was expected …

When Time Becomes Distorted: A Narcissist's View, Kourtney Lechner Jan 2013

When Time Becomes Distorted: A Narcissist's View, Kourtney Lechner

EWU Masters Thesis Collection

"Past research has shown that many factors influence an individual's ability to estimate time. One factor that has been researched extensively is personality traits. While a few studies have investigated the effects of narcissism traits on time estimation accuracy, only one study investigated the influence covert and overt narcissism on time estimation. Overt narcissists tend to be more explicit about their demands for attention, where as covert narcissists tend to be more implicit in their demands for attention and more introverted, and have feelings of inferiority. Previous research suggests that those who are entitled believe that their time is more …

Transcending The Status Quo: A Communication Perspective For Improving Health Behaviors At Eastern Washington University, Nicole L. Ridnour Jan 2013

Transcending The Status Quo: A Communication Perspective For Improving Health Behaviors At Eastern Washington University, Nicole L. Ridnour

EWU Masters Thesis Collection

"There is a belief known as the 'college experience;' an experience that some understand as a right of passage. This notion continues to be passed from generation to generation; what happens without our noticing is that the demands of that 'college experience' are changing. Survey results indicate that this 'experience' continues to perpetuate, that college students have skewed perceptions of vulnerabilities and are willing to take unhealthy risks, all as part of the 'college experience.' Through a mixed methods approach, this research demonstrates that advances in remedial health education are positively affecting students 'abilities' to "gain access to, understand and …

Institute for Educational Development, East Africa

Little evidence is available to assist policy makers and donors in deciding what kinds of programs in developing countries are more likely to be effective in supporting the entry and continuation of OVC in secondary schools. This is particularly important for females whose education has direct bearing on child mortality in the next generation. This study gathered four kinds of educational outcome measures in two East African countries ravaged by the AIDS/HIV pandemic. The goal was to determine whether direct scholarship aid to individual students versus various forms of block grants would be more effective in promoting lower rates of …

An automated system that can remotely and non-intrusively screen individuals at high risk for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and monitor their progress during treatment would be desired by many Veterans Affairs (VAs) as well as other PTSD treatment and research organizations. In this paper, we present an automated, cloud-based Tele-PTSD Monitor (TPM) system based on the fusion of multiple sources of information. The TPM system can be hosted in a cloud environment and accessed through landline or cell phones, or on the Internet through a web portal or mobile application (app).

Government Regulation: From Independence To Dependency, Part One, Steven Alan Samson Jan 2013

Government Regulation: From Independence To Dependency, Part One, Steven Alan Samson

Faculty Publications and Presentations

What Robert Bellah calls "expressive individualism" has led to unprecedented social legislation in America and expanded government employment since the 1960s, helping to produce a generous supply of public services, policy entrepreneurs, and clientele groups. The legal scholar Lawrence M Friedman notes that "the right to be 'oneself,' to choose oneself, is placed in a special and privileged position." As a consequence, "achievement is defined in subjective, personal terms, rather than in objective, social terms." When the claims of expressive individualism are considered in tandem with the increasing reach of the modern social service state, a case may be made …
