Defining Adequate Means Of Residents To Prepare Property For Protection From Wildfire, Trent Penman, Christine Eriksen, R Blanchi, M Chladil, A Gill, K Haynes, Justin Leonard, Jim Mclennan, Ross Bradstock Dec 2012

Defining Adequate Means Of Residents To Prepare Property For Protection From Wildfire, Trent Penman, Christine Eriksen, R Blanchi, M Chladil, A Gill, K Haynes, Justin Leonard, Jim Mclennan, Ross Bradstock

Christine Eriksen

Wildfire can result in significant loss of property and lives. Evidence shows that residents can decrease the risk of loss when they stay to defend their property. In order to safely defend a property, residents need to be adequately prepared for the wildfire conditions they face. Residents who wish to evacuate prior to the arrival of a wildfire also need to prepare their property and themselves for such an action. Despite the importance of preparation, there are no clear and quantifiable definitions of what it means to be prepared for different exposures to wildfire. Here we develop a model and …

Social Media And Disasters: Social Media Has Changed The Disaster Landscape, John Fisher Dec 2012

Social Media And Disasters: Social Media Has Changed The Disaster Landscape, John Fisher

Dr. John R. Fisher

The use of social media has changed the way the public is informed about disasters and how to recover from them. While the traditional media continue to play a key role, social media has given citizens a means to inform and protect each other as well as to alter public policy and the official approach to dealing with emergencies. The Haiti earthquake was a watershed moment that changed how social media is used in disasters. While social media was independently evolving in the years leading up to 2010, the use of social media in the Haiti disaster made public officials …

Understanding The Geopolitics Of The War In Southern Lebanon, Emmanuel Kotia Dec 2012

Understanding The Geopolitics Of The War In Southern Lebanon, Emmanuel Kotia

Emmanuel Wekem Kotia

The Lebanon–Israeli border is the only Arab-Israeli front that has witnessed continuous violence since the late 1960s. The past four decades have seen proliferation of small disputes over territory along the demarcation line between the two countries. In other circumstances, disputes of this nature could be managed or even resolved with ease. Yet, in the absence of a comprehensive peace pact between Syria and Israel, Lebanon remains both an instrument of and a potential trigger for broader regional conflict. Lebanon is not a major actor in Arab politics. Even its most political and militant actor, the Hezbollah, has only a …

Fertility Choice, Mortality Expectations, And Interdependent Preferences: An Empirical Analysis, Sebastian Linnemayr, David Canning, Isabel Guenther, David Bloom Dec 2012

Fertility Choice, Mortality Expectations, And Interdependent Preferences: An Empirical Analysis, Sebastian Linnemayr, David Canning, Isabel Guenther, David Bloom

Sebastian Linnemayr

We investigate the empirical relationship between child mortality and fertility across 46 low and middle income countries. Specifically, we model the effect of mortality expectations and interdependent fertility preferences on fertility. The direct marginal effect of mortality expectations on fertility is larger than zero but less than unity. This implies that a decrease in mortality rates leads to a decrease in children born but to an increase in the number of surviving children and hence the rate of population growth. Taking into account interdependent fertility preferences, whereby an individual's fertility choice affects the fertility decisions of others, the marginal effect …

Family, Money, And Health: Regional Differences In The Determinants Of Life Satisfaction Over The Life Course, Rachel Margolis, Mikko Myrskyla Dec 2012

Family, Money, And Health: Regional Differences In The Determinants Of Life Satisfaction Over The Life Course, Rachel Margolis, Mikko Myrskyla

Rachel Margolis

We examine how family, money, and health explain variation in life satisfaction over the life cycle across seven global regions using data from the World Values Survey. With a life domain approach, we study whether the importance of the life domains varies by region and age groups and whether the variation explained by each factor is due to the magnitude or prevalence of each factor. Globally, family, money, and health explain a substantial fraction of life satisfaction, increasing from 12 percent in young adulthood to 15 percent in mature adulthood. Health is the most important factor, and its importance increases …

Multiple Pollutants, Unovered Sectors, And Suboptimal Environmental Policies, Daniel Karney, Don Fullerton Dec 2012

Multiple Pollutants, Unovered Sectors, And Suboptimal Environmental Policies, Daniel Karney, Don Fullerton

Daniel H Karney

In our analytical general equilibrium model where two polluting inputs can be substitutes or complements in production, we study the effects of a tax on one pollutant in two cases: one where both pollutants face taxes and the second where the other pollutant is subject to a permit policy. In each case, we solve for closed-form solutions that highlight important parameters. We demonstrate two important ways that environmental taxes and permits are not equivalent. First, the change in the pollutant facing a tax increase depends on whether the other pollutant is subject to a tax or permit policy. Second, if …

Mind The Gap: Building Bridges Between Student Research And Library Technology With Bibliotech Labs, Steven Van Tuyl

Steven I Van Tuyl

Developing innovative technologies can be a difficult task for small to medium academic libraries where resources for new technological development are limited. At our university, we've implemented a program, BiblioTech Labs, whereby we partner with undergraduate researchers in the School of Computer Science to solve library technology problems. In this session we discuss our program, future plans, and how libraries can use this model to leverage local technology education to help solve technology problems.

Anay's Will To Learn: A Woman's Education In The Shadow Of The Maquiladora, Elaine Hampton Dec 2012

Anay's Will To Learn: A Woman's Education In The Shadow Of The Maquiladora, Elaine Hampton

Elaine Hampton

The opening of free trade agreements in the 1980s caused major economic changes in Mexico and the United States. These economic activities spawned dramatic social changes in Mexican society. One young Mexican woman, Anay Palomeque de Carrillo, rode the tumultuous wave of these economic activities from her rural home in tropical southern Mexico to the factories in the harsh desert lands of Ciudad Juárez during the early years of the city’s notorious violence.

During her years as an education professor at the University of Texas at El Paso, author Elaine Hampton researched Mexican education in border factory (maquiladora) communities. On …

A Comparative Study Of The Voter Registration Procedures Of Nigeria’S 1999-2011 General Elections, David Moveh Dec 2012

A Comparative Study Of The Voter Registration Procedures Of Nigeria’S 1999-2011 General Elections, David Moveh

David O Moveh PhD.

This paper is a comparative study of the voter registration exercises conducted in Nigeria within the period 1999-2011. Three key issues which are central to the voter registration process were identified as the indices for evaluating the voter registration exercises. These are: the extent of voter registration, the extent of multiple registrations and the extent of functionality of voter registration complaints procedures. The data for the study was derived using a questionnaire administered to a sample of respondents from four key stakeholders in the election administration process namely: the Independent National Electoral Commission- INEC, Political parties, Civil Society Organizations (CSO’s), …

The Normative Context Of Human Rights Criticism: Treaty Ratification And Un Mechanisms, Ann Marie Clark Dec 2012

The Normative Context Of Human Rights Criticism: Treaty Ratification And Un Mechanisms, Ann Marie Clark

Ann Marie Clark

extract from first paragraph: "How do human rights norms condition states' responses to international criticism? .... This chapter applies a form of dynamic time series analysis... along with a short case study of UN action on Indonesia, to consider the effects of the discursive engagement represented by treaty commitment and whether human rights treaty compliance varies when a state received additional international attention."

Democratic Participation, Engagement, And Freedom, Cillian Mcbride Dec 2012

Democratic Participation, Engagement, And Freedom, Cillian Mcbride

Cillian McBride

It is commonly supposed that democracies should encourage greater political participation and civic engagement. This article identifies two distinct perspectives on political participation and civic engagement: a ‘freedom-centred’ model and an ‘ethical’ model. The ‘freedom-centred’ model defended here draws on the republican concept of freedom as non-domination, together with the political liberal notion of fair deliberative proceduralism, while the ethical model draws on Aristotelian, perfectionist, sources. It is argued that the ‘ethical’ model is overly concerned with the ‘moral renewal’ of modern social life, and is insensitive to problems of domination posed by its account of civic reciprocity and trust. …

Getting What The Occupation Gives: Exploring Multilevel Links Between Work Design And Occupational Values, Erich Dierdorff, Frederick Morgeson Dec 2012

Getting What The Occupation Gives: Exploring Multilevel Links Between Work Design And Occupational Values, Erich Dierdorff, Frederick Morgeson

Erich C. Dierdorff

The history of work design research is voluminous and compelling. Thousands of studies have demonstrated the wide-reaching and powerful impact the design of work can have on a host of meaningful outcomes. Yet, absent in much of this research is an explicit consideration of the context within which work is performed and how this context might impact work design. Drawing from the Theory of Work Adjustment, we describe the different ways in which occupations are linked to work design. In a sample of 805 individuals from 230 occupations, our multilevel examinations show the occupational-level values of Achievement, Independence, Altruism, Status, …

"Just" Desserts: An Interpretive Analysis Of Sports Nutrition Marketing, Joylin Namie, Russell Warne Dec 2012

"Just" Desserts: An Interpretive Analysis Of Sports Nutrition Marketing, Joylin Namie, Russell Warne

Russell T Warne

Straddling the boundary between “junk” and not, sports nutrition is unique among processed foods. Between-meal snacks full of refined carbohydrates, sugar, sodium and even caffeine, qualities that render foods “bad” and off limits in other contexts, these products are consumed during the “work” of organized leisure, and increasingly as part of everyday life by non-athletes. Masquerading as healthy food, with ingredients, flavours and consumption patterns suggestive of children’s candy and adult desserts (Douglas, M. (1972). Deciphering a meal. Daedalus, 101(1), 61–81; James, A. (1998). Confections, concoctions, and conceptions. In H. Jenkins (Ed.), The children’s culture reader (pp. 394–405). New York: …

Kill-Lists And Accountability, Greg Mcneal Dec 2012

Kill-Lists And Accountability, Greg Mcneal

Greg McNeal

This article is a comprehensive examination of the U.S. practice of targeted killings. It is based in part on field research, interviews, and previously unexamined government documents. The article fills a gap in the literature, which to date lacks sustained scholarly analysis of the accountability mechanisms associated with the targeted killing process. The article makes two major contributions: 1) it provides the first qualitative empirical accounting of the targeted killing process, beginning with the creation of kill-lists extending through the execution of targeted strikes; 2) it provides a robust analytical framework for assessing the accountability mechanisms associated with those processes. …
