School Psychologists Need More Training In Providing Services To Students With Autism Spectrum Disorders (Asd), Lee Wilkinson Dec 2012

School Psychologists Need More Training In Providing Services To Students With Autism Spectrum Disorders (Asd), Lee Wilkinson

Lee A Wilkinson, PhD

As more and more children are being identified with ASD and placed in general education classrooms, school psychologists will play an ever increasingly important role in identification and intervention, as well as offer support, information, consultation, and recommendations to teachers, school personnel, administration, and families. Therefore, it is essential that they be knowledgeable about evidence-based assessment and intervention strategies for this population of students. Despite the limitations inherent in survey research, the data from these studies suggest that school psychologists are not adequately prepared to provide evidence-based assessment and intervention services to children with ASD. The survey research illustrates a …

Information Sources And Collection Planning For Engineering, Crystal Renfro, William Baer Dec 2012

Information Sources And Collection Planning For Engineering, Crystal Renfro, William Baer

Crystal L Renfro

This chapter will provide background for practicing librarians who have collection development responsibilities for engineering programs at academic institutions. Although it is intended as a resource for all engineering bibliographers, new librarians or those new to the technical fields may find it especially useful. Engineers (and engineering students) use information quite differently than other disciplines, and this can make collection development a daunting task. Furthermore, it is common for librarians with no background in engineering or technology to be assigned to manage the engineering collection. The information and tips contained in this chapter are meant to make this job easier.

A Social-Creative-Cognitive (Scc) Model For Requirements Engineering, Linda Dawson Dec 2012

A Social-Creative-Cognitive (Scc) Model For Requirements Engineering, Linda Dawson

Associate Professor Linda Dawson

This paper describes a research project and the findings from a set of six cases which examine professional requirements engineering (RE) practice from the perspective of how analysts reach agreement on system requirements for Information Systems Development (ISD). In these studies, it was found that the analysts reached agreement on requirements with clients through communication and negotiation based on both analysts’ cognitive skills in problem-solving and creative skills in developing informal models that could be used in the negotiation of agreement and sign-off on requirements specifications. A theoretical model of Social-Creative-Cognitive (SCC) aspects of Requirements Engineering is proposed encompassing the …

Development, Confirmatory Factor Analytic Investigation Of Structure, And Measurement Invariance Across Gender, Ronald Levant, Rosalie Hall, Thomas Rankin Dec 2012

Development, Confirmatory Factor Analytic Investigation Of Structure, And Measurement Invariance Across Gender, Ronald Levant, Rosalie Hall, Thomas Rankin

Ronald F Levant

The current study reports the development from the MRNI-R (Levant, Rankin, Williams, Hasan, & Smalley, 2010) of the 21-item Male Role Norms Inventory-Short Form (MRNI-SF). Confirmatory factor analysis of MRNI-SF responses from a sample of 1017 undergraduate participants (549 men, 468 women) indicated that the best-fitting “bi-factor” model incorporated the hypothesized seven-factor structure while explicitly modeling an additional, general traditional masculinity ideology factor. Specifically, each item-level indicator loaded on two factors: a general traditional masculinity ideology factor and a specific factor corresponding to one of the seven hypothesized traditional masculinity ideology norms. The bi-factor model was assessed for measurement invariance …

Building A Better Mba: From A Decade Of Critique Toward A Decennium Of Creation, Robert Rubin, Erich Dierdorff

Erich C. Dierdorff

During the past 10 years AMLE has made significant progress toward fulfilling its central mission of stimulating discourse within the field of management learning and education. Indeed, AMLE has become a reliable source of insightful scholarship regarding management education in general. The journal has also become an important platform for more specific scholarship directed toward the masters in business administration (MBA) degree and degree programs. Given the centrality of MBA programs in business schools and the substantial literature that has emerged on the topic within AMLE, we review this body of work to identify the broad topics and problems that …

Peacekeeping, Emma Norman Dec 2012

Peacekeeping, Emma Norman

Emma R. Norman

Reader’s Guide

This chapter introduces peacekeeping as one of the most urgent and crucial phases of conflict resolution and as a concept and a practice on which consensus is difficult to find. The disagreements start with how to define it, they permeate the soundness of its main principles and continue right up to what types of missions should be included, how many functions can be integrated into a mission and how to evaluate their success or failure. Acknowledging the disagreement and resulting confusion in all these areas, this chapter aims to develop a working command of some of the increasingly …

Normalising Police Militarisation, Living In Denial, Victor Kappeler, Peter Kraska Dec 2012

Normalising Police Militarisation, Living In Denial, Victor Kappeler, Peter Kraska

Peter Kraska

The militarisation of policing in the USA continues to be a critical area of enquiry for both the police and the society. Recent events in Boston speak to the centrality of this area of research for understanding state responses to an array of social problems, including violence, terrorism and civil unrest. The police capacity to organise and distribute state-sponsored violence as well as the ability to shape institutional appearances while doing so, impacts issues of civil rights, domestic order and the quality of political life in a democracy. The importance of the topic, coupled with the fact that we have …

Building National Infrastructures For Peace In Africa: Understanding The Role Of The National Peace Council In Ghana, Emmanuel Kotia, Festus Aubyn Dec 2012

Building National Infrastructures For Peace In Africa: Understanding The Role Of The National Peace Council In Ghana, Emmanuel Kotia, Festus Aubyn

Emmanuel Wekem Kotia

In this article, we provide an analysis of Ghana’s infrastructures for peace using the National Peace Council (NPC) as a case study. The article focuses on the composition, structures, tasks, achievements and challenges of the NPC. It argues that the NPC has made significant contributions in preventing and managing acts of violence that could have plunge Ghana into conflict. Its unique roles during the 2012 elections in Ghana are a testament to this assertion. Although some forms of violence did occur during the elections, our argument is that the violence would have become far worse if the NPC had not …

Pre-Columbian Diets In The Soconusco Revisited: A Dietary Study Through Stable Isotopic Analysis, Diana Moreiras Reynaga Dec 2012

Pre-Columbian Diets In The Soconusco Revisited: A Dietary Study Through Stable Isotopic Analysis, Diana Moreiras Reynaga

Diana K Moreiras Reynaga

This MA thesis focuses on the study of pre-Columbian subsistence and dietary patterns through the use of stable carbon and nitrogen isotopic analysis of human samples (n = 20) recovered from the Acapetahua, Mazatán, and Río Naranjo zones in the Soconusco region—located in the present-day state of Chiapas, México and the Northeastern coast of Guatemala. The stable isotope results in this study demonstrate the heterogeneity of ancient human diets in the Soconusco region, illustrating the complexity of ancient people’s lifeways from the Late Archaic (3500-1900 cal. B.C.) to the Late Postclassic (A.D. 1250-1530) periods. Further, the presence of C₄ plant …

Wildfire Preparedness, Community Cohesion And Social-Ecological Systems, Tim Prior, Christine Eriksen Dec 2012

Wildfire Preparedness, Community Cohesion And Social-Ecological Systems, Tim Prior, Christine Eriksen

Christine Eriksen

The consequences of wildfires are felt in susceptible communities around the globe on an annual basis. Climate change predictions in places like the south-east of Australia and western United States suggest that wildfires may become more frequent and more intense with global climate change. Compounding this issue is progressive urban development at the peri-urban fringe (wildland–urban interface), where continued infrastructure development and demographic changes are likely to expose more people and property to this potentially disastrous natural hazard. Preparing well in advance of the wildfire season is seen as a fundamental behaviour that can both reduce community wildfire vulnerability and …

Drawn To The Land: Women’S Life Course Consequences Of Frontier Settlement Over Two North Dakotan Land Booms, 1878–1910, Cheryl Elman, Kathryn Feltey, Barbara Wittman, Daniela Jauk Dec 2012

Drawn To The Land: Women’S Life Course Consequences Of Frontier Settlement Over Two North Dakotan Land Booms, 1878–1910, Cheryl Elman, Kathryn Feltey, Barbara Wittman, Daniela Jauk

Cheryl Elman

We introduce a life course, multimethod approach to examine the living arrangements of middle-aged and older American Indian and European women living on the rugged North Dakotan settlement frontier around 1910. Our model suggests that women’s later life circumstances reflect the long arm of institutional forces and their ethnicity/nativity, which anchors resource advantages and disadvantages (access to land, rail, and markets) and confers gender socialization (norms and practices) that reproduce gendered social roles. Drawing from primary and secondary sources, we find that European and American Indian women were selectively drawn to or (re)located on frontier spaces unevenly by ethnicity/nativity via …

Scouting And Servant Leadership In Cross-Cultural Perspective: An Exploratory Study, Ric Rohm, Bramwell Osula Dec 2012

Scouting And Servant Leadership In Cross-Cultural Perspective: An Exploratory Study, Ric Rohm, Bramwell Osula

Ric Rohm

This qualitative case study evaluates the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM), Boy Scouts of America, Scout Association of Japan, and the four major German scouting organizations (Deutsche Pfadfinderschaft Sankt Georg, Pfadfinderinnenschaft Sankt Georg, Bund der Pfadfinderinnen und Pfadfinder, and Verband Christlicher Pfadfinderinnen und Pfadfinder) as servant leadership development programs. After a brief history of the origins of scouting, the WOSM and the three national scouting organizations are examined, comparing their mottos, promises, and laws. All programs promote service to God, country, and community; teaching leadership through outdoor living and community service projects. A review of servant leadership literature …
