Spillovers Of Veterans Hospice Care: The Economic And Social Impact Of Palliative Care, Maximiliano Mendieta, Bruce D. Mcdonald Iii
Spillovers Of Veterans Hospice Care: The Economic And Social Impact Of Palliative Care, Maximiliano Mendieta, Bruce D. Mcdonald Iii
Bruce D. McDonald, III
In exchange for military service in the United States, soldiers are promised a benefits package inclusive of health and education after the completion of their service. While the economic effects of the defense-growth relationship are well known, this study takes a unique approach to understanding the relationship between veterans and society by investigating the social and economic spillovers of veterans hospice care. This study shows that as an early adopter of hospice care, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs maximized its efficiency through sponsoring innovative research on geriatric care, introducing competition into the health sector, and legitimizing death and dying …

The Administrative Foundation Of The Rule Of Law, Tiberiu Dragu, Mattias K. Polborn
The Administrative Foundation Of The Rule Of Law, Tiberiu Dragu, Mattias K. Polborn
Mattias K Polborn
This article builds upon the observation that political rulers have to rely upon administrators to implement their policy decisions to uncover two mechanisms by which legal limits, understood in terms of fundamental human rights, can be self-enforcing in practice. We show how the effectiveness of such legal limits depends on administrators' expectation that rights violations might be costly in the future, when the current ruler's grip on power ends. We also show how the effectiveness of legal limits depends on administrators' expectation about each others' actions when asked to execute an illegal policy, which allows for the possibility that human …

Issues Of Citizenship, National Identity And Political Socialization In Singapore: Implications To The Singapore Education System, Vicente C. Reyes Jr
Dr. Vicente C Reyes Jr
This inquiry attempts to address the question: How has the Singapore city-state used its education system in integrating three important cornerstones of nation-building? Using selected data from the National Orientations of Singaporeans Survey complemented by policy documents, this article explores three specific questions: (1) How is citizenship education pursued? (2) How is national identity forged? And (3) How is political socialization engendered? The inquiry concludes with challenges that the Singapore education system faces as it tries to address its nation-building project.

What We Do And Do Not Know: The Social Implications Of Defense, Bruce D. Mcdonald Iii
What We Do And Do Not Know: The Social Implications Of Defense, Bruce D. Mcdonald Iii
Bruce D. McDonald, III
The relationship between defense spending and economic growth has been a major topic of research and political debate for more than one hundred years. Although the relationship of interest is economically oriented, its theoretical underpinning has relied upon the social spillovers of the defense sector. This includes programs on community health, education, and access to technology. Despite this reliance, little is known about what social spillovers. This paper furthers our understanding of the defense-growth relationship by introducing the social spillovers that exist and clarifying how those spillovers occur. The author concludes with a discussion about the direction of future research …

Moral Dilemma Judgment: A Neuroeconomic Approach, Armando F. Rocha, Fábio T. Rocha, Eduardo Massad
Moral Dilemma Judgment: A Neuroeconomic Approach, Armando F. Rocha, Fábio T. Rocha, Eduardo Massad
Armando F Rocha
Morals and ethics are important issues in human societies. Recently, the development of new techniques for studying the human brain has brought moral and ethical discussions to the realm of neuroscience investigations. Controversies still remain regarding the results of studies about morals and ethics and the understanding of the neurodynamics of dilemma judgment, which seems to depend on the nature of the studied dilemma (e.g., personal versus impersonal). Here, we proposed to understand the differences between personal and impersonal dilemmas in the context of losses modeled by neuroeconomic theory. The results show that the dilemma solution correlates nicely with the …
The Performance Of Different Propensity Score Methods For Estimating Marginal Hazard Ratios, Peter C. Austin
The Performance Of Different Propensity Score Methods For Estimating Marginal Hazard Ratios, Peter C. Austin
Peter Austin
Propensity score methods are increasingly being used to reduce or minimize the effects of confounding when estimating the effects of treatments, exposures, or interventions when using observational or non-randomized data. Under the assumption of no unmeasured confounders, previous research has shown that propensity score methods allow for unbiased estimation of linear treatment effects (e.g., differences in means or proportions). However, in biomedical research, time-to-event outcomes occur frequently. There is a paucity of research into the performance of different propensity score methods for estimating the effect of treatment on time-to-event outcomes. Furthermore, propensity score methods allow for the estimation of marginal …

Climate Change And Energy Policy In Chile: Up In Smoke?, L. Mundaca T.
Climate Change And Energy Policy In Chile: Up In Smoke?, L. Mundaca T.
Luis Mundaca
This paper provides an ex-post assessment of the climate and energy policy developments in Chile emerging from a neoliberal economic model, during the period 1971-2007. First, correlation and regression analyses were performed to analyse historical CO2 emissions as a product of demographic, economic and energy-wide drivers. Then I estimate indicators related to CO2 emissions, energy use and economic activity. In the light of empirical results, I identify policy instruments and structural issues. Finally, I present a comparative analysis of Chile and other Latin American countries. Statistical tests show that variability of CO2 emissions is explained mostly by GDP per capita …
Advocacy And Influence: Lobbying And Legislative Outcomes In Wisconsin, Daniel C. Lewis
Advocacy And Influence: Lobbying And Legislative Outcomes In Wisconsin, Daniel C. Lewis
Daniel Lewis
Gauging the influence of organized interests in the American legislative process is undeniably a difficult undertaking. Interest groups and their lobbyists have little incentive to publicly reveal their goals and the extent of their efforts in pursuing those goals. Nationally, and in most states, lobbyists and interest groups are only required to publicly report their lobbying expenditures and the general policy areas in which they are interested in. Thus, it is extremely difficult to assess whether groups are successful in advocating for or against a particular bill. However, a few states have recently begun to require lobbyists and organized interests …

Looking Out For The Little Guy: Small Data Curation, Katherine G. Akers

It is perhaps no coincidence that academic librarians are accelerating their efforts to curate research data at the same time that attention is increasingly being focused on big data. But in a college or university setting, a preoccupation with big data may be unrealistic and unproductive. Instead, our concerns should be with small data and the challenges of managing a myriad of diverse and undocumented, yet small, datasets

Using Careless Speech For Careful, Well Crafted Writing--Whatever Its Style, Peter Elbow
Peter Elbow
I write here to correct a common misreading of my work. I've not been fighting all these years just to make writing easier by loosening standards; I've been fighting to make writing better. Especially in my recent *Vernacular Eloquence*, I've been trying help people use their vernacular spoken language to produce writing that is nevertheless careful and excellent--to break out of the unclear, roundabout, or mashed-potatoes prose they so often produce when they try to write right.

“If There Is No Struggle, There Is No Progress”: Transformative Youth Resistance And The School Of Ethnic Studies., Nolan L. Cabrera
Nolan L. Cabrera
In the wake of the Tucson Unified School District dismantling its highly successful Mexican American Studies (MAS) program, students staged walkouts across the district to demonstrate their opposition. Student-led walkouts were portrayed as merely ‘‘ditching,’’ and students were described as not really understanding why they were protesting. After these events, a group of student activists called UNIDOS organized and led the School of Ethnic Studies. This was a community school dedicated to teaching the forbidden MAS curriculum. In this article we present counternarratives from organizers, presenters, and participants in the School of Ethnic Studies. These narratives demonstrate the transformative resistance …

Illicit Nuclear And Missile Procurement Networks, Orde F. Kittrie
Orde F. Kittrie
This essay provides an overview and analysis of Iran’s nuclear and missile procurement activities and the efforts of the United States and its allies to detect, deter, and disrupt those activities. It also derives lessons learned and makes recommendations for how the U.S. and its allies can more effectively counter those Iranian activities.
Iran’s nuclear and missile programs remain heavily dependent on foreign suppliers. Since Iranian procurement of key nuclear and missile technology is prohibited by legally binding resolutions of the United Nations Security Council, Iran must procure this material illicitly. Over the past three decades, Iran has acquired more …

Sorority Women’S And Fraternity Men’S Rape Myth Acceptance And Bystander Intervention Attitudes, R Sean Bannon, Matt W. Brosi, John D. Foubert
John D. Foubert
Sorority women and fraternity men are more likely than other students to be survivors and perpetrators of sexual assault, respectively. The present study examined sorority and fraternity members’ rape myth acceptance, bystander efficacy, and bystander willingness to help in potential sexual assault situations. Sorority women were more rejecting of rape myths and were more willing to intervene than fraternity men. However, no difference in bystander efficacy was found. Implications of this contrast are discussed.

Integrating Religiosity And Pornography Use Into The Prediction Of Bystander Efficacy And Willingness To Prevent Sexual Assault., John D. Foubert, Andrew J. Rizzo
John D. Foubert
This study examined relationships between intrinsic and extrinsic religiosity, reasons for using Internet pornography, frequency of using Internet pornography during the last year, and the degree to which participants believed they were both confident in their efficacy and were willing to intervene to help prevent a sexual assault from occurring. Students volunteered to take an online survey as one of several options for course credit in a research participation system in a School of Education at a midwestern public university. Men’s extrinsic religiosity was positively correlated with their use of Internet pornography and negatively correlated with willingness to intervene as …
