Post Mission, Red Teaming The Details Of The Devil., Carter Matherly Dec 2012

Post Mission, Red Teaming The Details Of The Devil., Carter Matherly

Carter Matherly PhD

Red Teaming is an analytical process that will reduce threat by identifying previously unobserved or unrecognized threats through visualization of the battlefield from the enemy’s point of view, via synthesization of the enemies’ decision making processes while removing relatively common analytical bias and perceptions. Despite the invaluable data these teams are able to produce there is little guidance available to assist Red teams in exploiting their gained knowledge of threats. This has ultimately led to these teams being under employed as simple OPFOR (opposing forces) with little thought to post mission analysis or applications. Could a post mission analytical review …

Child Maltreatment And Bullying: Examining The Experiences Of Lgb Children And Adolescents, Steven Bruce, Emily Hu, Kaylin Jones Dec 2012

Child Maltreatment And Bullying: Examining The Experiences Of Lgb Children And Adolescents, Steven Bruce, Emily Hu, Kaylin Jones

Steven Bruce

Child Maltreatment and Bullying: Examining the Experiences of LGB Children and Adolescents Research on sexual minority populations has traditionally focused on trauma exposure and etiology of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) within adults who identify as lesbian, gay, or bisexual (LGB). Indeed, multiple studies have found that LGB adults consistently report higher rates of trauma than their heterosexual counterparts, including the experience of hate crimes and verbal and/or physical harassment [1]. However, LGB individuals do not experience trauma only in adulthood; many suffer years of child physical abuse (CPA) and child sexual abuse (CSA) within the home.

28. Right And Righteous: Children's Incipient Understanding Of True And False Statements, Thomas D. Lyon, Jodi A. Quas, Nathalie Carrick Dec 2012

28. Right And Righteous: Children's Incipient Understanding Of True And False Statements, Thomas D. Lyon, Jodi A. Quas, Nathalie Carrick

Thomas D. Lyon

Two studies examined young children's early understanding and evaluation of truth-telling and lying, and the role that factuality plays in their judgments. Study 1 (104 2- to 5-year-olds) found that even the youngest children reliably accepted true statements and rejected false statements, and that older children's ability to label true and false statements as "truth" and "lie" emerged in tandem with their positive evaluation of true statements and "truth" and their negative evaluation of false statements and "lie." The findings suggest that children's early preference for factuality develops into a conception of "truth" and "lie" that is linked both to …

The Effect Of Languaging On Korean Students' L2 Learning Motivation: A Classroom-Based Mixed Methods Approach, Tae-Young Kim Dec 2012

The Effect Of Languaging On Korean Students' L2 Learning Motivation: A Classroom-Based Mixed Methods Approach, Tae-Young Kim

Dr. Tae-Young Kim (김태영, 金兌英)

This paper focuses on the effect of languaging activity on students' L2 learning motivation. Swain (2006, p. 98) defines languaging as "the process of making meaning and shaping knowledge and experience through language." To date, most of languaging research investigated its impact on L2 learners' cognition. I endeavor to extend its original notion to the domain of motivation. Based on Dörnyei's (2009) L2 Motivational Self-System, the effect of languaging on students' L2 selves and their teachers' reflection will be investigated in this paper.

In Spring 2012, three English teachers implemented four different languaging conditions for their students: 1) written languaging …

An Activity Theory Analysis Of Second Language Motivational Self-System: Two Korean Immigrants' Esl Learning, Tae-Young Kim Dec 2012

An Activity Theory Analysis Of Second Language Motivational Self-System: Two Korean Immigrants' Esl Learning, Tae-Young Kim

Dr. Tae-Young Kim (김태영, 金兌英)

This paper analyzes two recent Korean immigrants’ ESL learning motivation using Dörnyei’s (2009) Second Language (L2) Motivational Self-System, which is synthesized with Engeström’s (1999) Activity Theory (AT) framework. Over a ten month period, the author conducted semi-structured monthly interviews and stimulated recall tasks. The findings of this case study suggest the following: 1) when sociocultural factors are mediated by L2 learners’ beliefs, these factors may directly influence learners’ ideal L2 self and ought-to L2 self; 2) learners’ sensitivity with inclusive attitudes can transform the L2 learning environment into meaningful affordances; and 3) if there is no tension among elements in …

Serving Time By Coming Home:Communicating Hope Through A Reentry Court, Jeralyn L. Faris Dec 2012

Serving Time By Coming Home:Communicating Hope Through A Reentry Court, Jeralyn L. Faris

Jeralyn L Faris

Reentry Problem Solving Courts (PSCs) are a strategy of prison reform that is increasingly being applied in the U.S. A critical aspect of the reentry PSC is assisting ex-prisoners in (re)establishing relationships with their families, a strong motivation that increases the likelihood that they will not be among the 67% of those who reoffend within three years. This chapter provides an overview of the literature on incarceration and families, a description of a local reentry PSC, and an ethnographic case study of a courtroom session focusing on family issues.

It Takes A Team: A Semester Success Story Of Writing, Receiving, And Executing A Grant In One Semester With An English 1110.01 Class, Robert A. Eckhart, Michelle Battista Dec 2012

It Takes A Team: A Semester Success Story Of Writing, Receiving, And Executing A Grant In One Semester With An English 1110.01 Class, Robert A. Eckhart, Michelle Battista

Robert A. Eckhart

The model for an inquiry-based undergraduate experience has been embraced and is thriving. But the primary focus of the undergraduate participation in research is happening outside the classroom—as an extracurricular, similar to climbing the rock wall at the Adventure Recreation Center, or swimming laps in the pool. What would happen if research was built into an undergraduate course? What if it was built into the single most widely-taken course at OSU, English 1110? Through a unique convergence of resources and people at Ohio State, we had an opportunity to answer exactly this question last semester. Co-authored by two students in …

Curating The Ethnographic Moment, Andrew D. Asher, Lori M. Jahnke Dec 2012

Curating The Ethnographic Moment, Andrew D. Asher, Lori M. Jahnke

Andrew Asher

Digital technologies have vastly increased the volume of materials that ethnographic researchers are able to collect. They have also enhanced possibilities for rapidly sharing data not only with other researchers, but also with research subjects and the public at large. However, the relative ease of collecting digital materials can quickly outpace the data management skills of researchers, who usually have little or no training in recordkeeping, preservation, or curation strategies. Making digital data available online can also compound ethical dilemmas faced by ethnographers, who often find themselves torn between contradictory imperatives to share data publically and to protect the privacy …

Marginal Versus Average Effective Tax Rates And Foreign Direct Investment, Matt Krzepkowski Dec 2012

Marginal Versus Average Effective Tax Rates And Foreign Direct Investment, Matt Krzepkowski

Matt Krzepkowski

This paper investigates the influence of two types of calculated effective tax rates on foreign direct investment inflows. I take advantage of the fact the average effective tax rate can be decomposed of as a weighted average of the statutory corporate income tax rate and the marginal effective tax rate to identify which tax affects investment inflows. Using a calculated marginal effective tax rate for a diverse set of 80 countries from 2005-2009, the paper shows that taxes other than the statutory tax rate have a strong effect on encouraging foreign investment. Separating out components of the marginal and average …

“100% Authentic Pittsburgh”: Sociolinguistic Authenticity And The Linguistics Of Particularity, Barbara Johnstone Dec 2012

“100% Authentic Pittsburgh”: Sociolinguistic Authenticity And The Linguistics Of Particularity, Barbara Johnstone

Barbara Johnstone

As Bucholtz (2003), Coupland (2007, pp. 25-26), and others have pointed out, what counts as an authentic linguistic variety or an authentic speaker depends on who is counting and why. Sociolinguists have often unthinkingly privileged as their object of study the most unselfconsious, “vernacular” speech in relatively closed, homogeneous communities like traditional working-class neighborhoods, with their dense, multiplex social networks, and in the relatively self-contained symbolic economies of schools. This has allowed us to explore social correlates of variation and processes of change in communities where these things appear least muddied by outside influences, and doing so has given us …

Spread And Backwash Effects For Non-Metropolitan Communities In The U.S., Joanna Ganning, Kathy Baylis, Bumsoo Lee Dec 2012

Spread And Backwash Effects For Non-Metropolitan Communities In The U.S., Joanna Ganning, Kathy Baylis, Bumsoo Lee

Kathy Baylis

Few studies empirically estimate the effects of metropolitan growth on non-metropolitan communities at a national scale. This paper estimates the growth effects of 276 MSAs on population in 1,988 non-metropolitan communities in the United States from 2000-2007. We estimate the distance for growth spillovers from MSAs to non-metropolitan communities and test the assumption that a single MSA influences growth. We compare three methods of weighting cities’ influence: nearest city only, inverse-distance and relative commuting flow to multiple cities. We find the inverse-distance approach provides slightly more reliable and theoretically supportable results than the traditional nearest city approach.

Observations were taking across rice farms in 10 villages, and relevant literature on rainfall variability of the study area was consulted. The result indicates that 7.7 % of rainfall variability led to a great lost of 34.7 %; indicating that changing pattern of rainfall affects rice production. The resultant low …

The Generic U.S. Presidential War Narrative: Justifying Military Force And Imagining The Nation, Adam Hodges Dec 2012

The Generic U.S. Presidential War Narrative: Justifying Military Force And Imagining The Nation, Adam Hodges

Adam Hodges

In his 1795 essay on perpetual peace, Kant points out that in political systems where power rests with the people and their representatives, “the consent of the citizens is required to decide whether or not war is to be declared” (Kant 1991: 100). In theory, the necessity of obtaining the consent of citizens should help stave off unwarranted uses of the military because, as Kant explains, “it is very natural that they [the citizens] will have great hesitation in embarking on so dangerous an enterprise” (Kant 1991: 100). In other words, and more specific to the American context, given the …

Dark Tourism Scholarship: A Critical Review, Philip Stone Dr Dec 2012

Dark Tourism Scholarship: A Critical Review, Philip Stone Dr

Dr Philip Stone

Commonly referred to as dark tourism or thanatourism, the act of touristic travel to sites of or sites associated with death and disaster has gained significant attention with media imaginations and academic scholarship. However, despite a growing body of literature on the representation and tourist experience of deathscapes within the visitor economy, dark tourism as a field of study is still very much in its infancy. Moreover, questions remain of the academic origins of the dark tourism concept as well as its contribution to the broader social scientific study of tourism and death education. Thus, the purpose of my invited …

Deviance, Dark Tourism And ‘Dark Leisure’: Towards A (Re)Configuration Of Morality And The Taboo In Secular Society, Philip R. Stone Dec 2012

Deviance, Dark Tourism And ‘Dark Leisure’: Towards A (Re)Configuration Of Morality And The Taboo In Secular Society, Philip R. Stone

Dr Philip Stone

A taboo is a prohibition placed on exposing what is good as well as what is bad. Indeed, prohibited by authority or social influences, taboos are rooted in an unconscious guilt and insulated from our psychosocial life-worlds by mediating institutions of religion and politics. Yet, in an age of secularisation and liberalisation, new mediating institutions of the taboo are emerging, particularly within contemporary museology. Presently, therefore, a number of time-honoured taboos are increasingly becoming translucent and, as a result, there is a new willingness to tackle inherently ambiguous and problematical interpretations. Consequently, an exhilarating phase of museological development has opened …

Dark Tourism, Heterotopias And Post-Apocalyptic Places: The Case Of Chernobyl, Philip R. Stone Dec 2012

Dark Tourism, Heterotopias And Post-Apocalyptic Places: The Case Of Chernobyl, Philip R. Stone

Dr Philip Stone

On 26 April 1986, during a procedural shut down of reactor number four at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic (now Ukraine), a catastrophic surge of energy led to a reactor vessel rupture and, subsequently, resulted in the world’s worst nuclear accident. Numbers of deaths from the disaster vary enormously, including from the radioactive fallout that encroached great swathes of Western Europe, to the apparent generational health maladies that now affect local populations. However, despite remaining health and safety concerns, illegal visitor tours to Chernobyl have flourished over the past decade or so. Moreover, during …

Jacobus J. "Jaap" Vos

In September of 2012, the City of Boise‘s Parks and Recreation Department asked the Department of Community and Regional Planning to assist with a survey intended to be able to provide a glimpse of the use of the greenbelt on a typical week and weekend day. Greenbelt users were interviewed at three different locations on the greenbelt on Tuesday, September 18, and Saturday, September 22. The locations were chosen by Boise Parks and Recreation and represented downtown (Anne Frank Memorial), and respectively 2.5 miles east (Warm Springs) and west (Veterans Park) of downtown. At both Veterans Park and Warm Springs, …

China’S Rise In A Changing Regional Hierarchy: A Comparison Of 21st Century China To 20th Century Germany, Thomas J. Nisley Dec 2012

China’S Rise In A Changing Regional Hierarchy: A Comparison Of 21st Century China To 20th Century Germany, Thomas J. Nisley

Thomas Nisley

This article compares China’s rise in Asia today with Germany’s rise in Europe in the early twentieth century. In both cases, the regional hierarchy exhibited rapid change and a power transition, with Germany surpassing Great Britain and China surpassing Japan. To understand the implications and the consequences of the changing relative power hierarchy, I examine both cases through the lens of the Power Transition Theory. With an understanding of the possible outcomes of a regional power transition, this study engages a debate as to the correct direction of U.S. foreign policy. I argue that the United States should adopt a …

Law Reform On Sexual And Gender-Based Crimes In Mass Violence, Saumya Uma Dec 2012

Law Reform On Sexual And Gender-Based Crimes In Mass Violence, Saumya Uma

Dr. Saumya Uma

The article discusses sexual and gender-based crimes in mass violence in India. It draws upon five different contexts of mass violence - communal (religion-based) violence, caste-based violence, violence in the context of militarization, violence in the context of anti-people development, and dispossession / violence in anti-Naxal operations.
In the second part of the article, it discusses gaps in Indian legal jurisprudence which are major causative factors for the existing impunity, and pose challenges to justice.
As a logical corollary, the third part discusses relevant law reform initiatives that are in process, to address the challenges to justice. In critiquing such …
