Sexual Risk Behavior And Risk Reduction Beliefs Among Hiv-Positive Young Men Who Have Sex With Men, Douglas Bruce, Gary W. Harper, Katie Suleta, The Atn

Douglas Bruce

With young men who have sex with men (YMSM) continuing to be disproportionately affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the U.S. , secondary prevention efforts with this population take on increasing significance. We surveyed 200 HIV-positive YMSM (ages 16-24, 66% Black, 18% Latino, 7% White, 7% Multiracial/Other) recruited from 14 HIV primary care sites to examine associations of unprotected anal intercourse (UAI) and partner HIV status with endorsement of serosorting, sexual positioning and viral load beliefs. Proportions of participants engaging in UAI one or more times during the past three months were consistent across type of UAI (insertive or receptive) …

High Expectations For Higher Education? Perceptions Of College And Experiences Of Stress Prior To And Through The College Career., Dana Krieg

Dana Krieg

Increasing numbers of students are experiencing difficulty adjusting to college. Violated expectations of college may increase the stress experienced across the college career. Therefore, 36 college students were assessed prior to matriculation, during the first year and during the senior year. Expectations and experiences of academics, social life, family involvement, and satisfaction with the chosen college were compared. Students’ experiences generally did not differ from their expectations, except regarding increased involvement with family. Violated expectations of academic demands predicted stress during the first and senior years. Violated expectations regarding social experiences predicted stress in the vulnerable first year.

Lgb Cultural Phenomena And The Social Work Research Enterprise: Towards A Strengths-Based, Culturally Anchored Methodology, Trevor G. Gates Phd, Brian L. Kelly Phd

Brian L.Kelly

Although the lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) community has seen new protections and benefits in the last quarter century, LGB people continue to experience stigmatization throughout American society. Social work research that frames the LBG community and its members as disenfranchised, marginalized, and oppressed tends to support a stigmatizing attitude toward LGB people. Social work research with the LGB community and its members must shift from a focus on pathology to strengths and resources. This article examines the potential application of a strengths perspective and its usefulness in reshaping the discourse on stigmatization of the LGB community and its members.

What’S The Future Of Systems Librarian And Systems Librarianship?, Xiaohua (Cindy) Li, Hong Ma

Hong Ma

There has not been a clear definition of what a system librarian should be, and the definition now is even blurry. Since cloud computing becomes the paradigm for many organizations to manage their IT infrastructure and the advancement of library discovery services start to break the traditional model of the functions of library automation systems, the nature of system librarian jobs is undergoing dramatic changes. The uncertainty of the future arouses the concerns of system librarians. Facing the transformation that technology brings to the library world, system librarians have to choose either to sink in the sea change or take …

Bypassing Bias: How Law Reviews Circumvent Favoritism, Allen P. Mendenhall Dec 2012

Bypassing Bias: How Law Reviews Circumvent Favoritism, Allen P. Mendenhall

Allen Mendenhall

Could peer-reviewed humanities journals benefit by having student editors, as is the practice for law reviews? Are student editors valuable because they are less likely than peer reviewers to be biased against certain contributors and viewpoints? Student editors of and contributors to law reviews may seem to be the notable exception, but legal scholarship is different from humanities scholarship in ways I address here, and law reviews suffer from biases similar to those endemic to peer-reviewed journals. Nevertheless, law review submission and editing probably have less systemic bias than peer-reviewed journals, but not because students edit them. Rather, law review …

Una Evaluación De Los Factores Que Estimulan El Patentamiento Regional En México, Vicente German-Soto, Luis Gutiérrez Flores Dec 2012

Una Evaluación De Los Factores Que Estimulan El Patentamiento Regional En México, Vicente German-Soto, Luis Gutiérrez Flores

Mobility, Latino Migrants, And The Geography Of Sex Work: Using Ethnography In Public Health Assessments, Thurka Sangaramoorthy, Karen Kroeger Dec 2012

Mobility, Latino Migrants, And The Geography Of Sex Work: Using Ethnography In Public Health Assessments, Thurka Sangaramoorthy, Karen Kroeger

Thurka Sangaramoorthy

Recent studies have documented frequent use of female sex workers among Latino migrant men in the southeastern United States, yet little is known about the context in which sex work takes place or the women who provide these services. As anthropologists working in applied public health, we use rapid ethnographic assessment as a technical assistance tool to document local understandings of the organization and typology of sex work and patterns of mobility among sex workers and their Latino migrant clients. By incorporating ethnographic methods in traditional public health needs assessments, we were able to highlight the diversity of migrant experiences …

Everyday Landmarks Of Networked Urbanism: Cellular Antenna Sites And The Infrastructure Of Mobile Communication In Philadelphia, Alan Wiig

Alan Wiig

Harnessing the utility of mobile communication and the mobile Internet is a common, everyday aspect of the urban condition. The wireless connectivity these pocketable devices are produced through an electromagnetic overlay that emanates from cellular antenna and towers. These sites have a distinct if often overlooked presence in the urban landscape of the United States. Through fieldwork in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, this essay examines the aesthetic impact of telecommunications network equipment such as cel- lular sites as a means of locating these sites as key socio-technical actors in one of the infor- mation and telecommunication infrastructures of contemporary, networked urbanism.

Aids Treatment And Mental Health: Evidence From Uganda, Edward Okeke, Glenn Wagner Dec 2012

Aids Treatment And Mental Health: Evidence From Uganda, Edward Okeke, Glenn Wagner

Edward Okeke

Increased access to antiretroviral therapy (ART) in developing countries over the last decade is believed to have contributed to reductions in HIV transmission and improvements in life expectancy. While numerous studies document the effects of ART on physical health and functioning, comparatively less attention has been paid to the effects of ART on mental health outcomes. In this paper we study the impact of ART on depression in a cohort of patients in Uganda entering HIV care. We find that twelve months after beginning ART, the prevalence of major and minor depression in the treatment group had fallen by approximately …

First Draft Do Not Publish- Regulations On Firearms: Confessions From A Gun Salesman, Beau W. Cross

Beau W Cross

Over the past year, there has been a heated debate on Capitol Hill about the regulation of firearms and accessories such as high capacity magazines. With many school massacres and other acts of violence due to gunfire taking place in the past few decades, change in regulations was inevitable. A total ban on firearms was not feasible, as a citizen’s right to bear arms is protected through the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution. However, in 2005, President Bush took a stance; he created change in policy by signing the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (Arms Act) …

A Mixed Methods Examination Of Structural Bigenderism And The Consequences For Transgender And Gender Variant People, Kristie L. Seelman Dec 2012

A Mixed Methods Examination Of Structural Bigenderism And The Consequences For Transgender And Gender Variant People, Kristie L. Seelman

Kristie L Seelman

For years, transgender activists and their allies have spoken out about the oppression that transgender and gender non-conforming people experience in relation to societal systems and institutions, due to policies and practices that do not acknowledge non-binary experiences of gender, that do not recognize that one’s gender may change over time or may not match cultural expectations for gender expression, and that punish and discriminate against trans people (Gilbert, 2009; Lombardi & Davis, 2006; Markman, 2011; Spade, 2006; WWRC, 2010). Scholars have called for human services professionals and researchers to critique the failures of institutions in society (and the people …

Colorado State University Libraries (CSUL) purchased the digitized United States Congressional Serial Set, 1817–1994 and American State Papers (1789–1838) from the Readex Division of NewsBank, Inc. and, once
funds and records were available, the accompanying MARC records. The breadth of information found in the Serial Set is described, along with the difficulties in using the print version (incorporated in the literature review, which includes citations of announcements of the digital collections and reviews of the software). The digital version of the Serial Set has its advantages, but there are additional rewards (much greater discovery opportunities) when items in the digital …

Factor Income Taxation, Growth, And Investment Specific Technological Change, Monisankar Bishnu, Chetan Ghate, Pawan Gopalakrishnan

Chetan Ghate

We construct a tractable endogenous growth model with production externalities in which the public capital stock augments investment specific technological change. We characterize the first best fiscal policy and show that there exist several labor and capital tax-subsidy combinations that decentralize the planner's growth rate. The optimal factor income tax mix is therefore indeterminate which gives the planner the flexibility to choose policy rules from a large set. Our model explains why many advanced economies experiencing similar growth rates have widely varying factor income tax rates.
