The Relationship Between College Men’S Religious Preference And Their Level Of Moral Development., Jerry L. Tatum, John D. Foubert, Dale R. Fuqua, Christopher Ray

John D. Foubert

The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between first year college men's religious preference (Catholic, Protest.ant, or none) and their level of moral development as measured by the Defining Issues TestShort Form (Rest, 1986). Data analyses were conducted based upon results for 161 in-coming college men. Results of an analysis of variance indicated that those with no stated religious preference had significantly higher P scores (M = 45.2, SD= 16.8) than respondents who identified as Roman Catholic (M = 36.1, SD= J 6.7) or as Protestant (M= 38.6, SD= 17.3). Implications are discussed regarding the relevance of …

Self-Regulatory Strategies Of Foreign Language Learners: From The Classroom To Study Abroad And Beyond, Heather W. Allen Dec 2012

Self-Regulatory Strategies Of Foreign Language Learners: From The Classroom To Study Abroad And Beyond, Heather W. Allen

Heather Willis Allen

This study explores how three “good language learners” developed motivational self-regulation strategies during and after SA. Two research questions were addressed: 1) What motivational self-regulation strategies did the participants evidence during SA in relation to their stated language-learning goals? 2) Were the participants able to maintain their language-learning motivation following SA and, if so, what ongoing self-regulation strategies did they use?

Accumulation And Inequality Of Human Capital Among Mexican States Along 1960-2008, Vicente German-Soto, Reyna E. Rodríguez, Carmen N. Escamilla Dec 2012

Accumulation And Inequality Of Human Capital Among Mexican States Along 1960-2008, Vicente German-Soto, Reyna E. Rodríguez, Carmen N. Escamilla

Vicente German-Soto

An old concern is to know why some economies grow faster than others. Here we measure the human capital, one of the factors identified like fundamental to understand the economic growth. The accumulation of two indicators at the Mexican state level is estimated and studied along 1960-2008: one in the total economy and related to the industrial sector the other one. The results show the state differences that prevail in terms of human capital and highlight a very low mobility of entities in the accumulated human capital ranking, indicating a very persistent process of inequality.

Taking The High Ground: Fema Trailer Siting After Hurricane Katrina, Daniel P. Aldrich, Kevin Crook Dec 2012

Taking The High Ground: Fema Trailer Siting After Hurricane Katrina, Daniel P. Aldrich, Kevin Crook

Daniel P Aldrich

Using data on more than 300 census blocks from across New Orleans, Louisiana, this article investigates two steps in the placement of temporary housing after Hurricane Katrina. First, the authors seek to understand the factors that determined whether census blocks were selected for Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) trailers. Then, in light of the widespread resistance to the trailers, they focus on variables that influenced whether trailers were successfully placed on those sites. Despite past research arguing that race, collective action potential, and political factors are the primary determinants of facility placement and the success or failure of the attempt, …

Deciding To Cross: The Norms And Economics Of Unauthorized Migration, Emily Ryo Dec 2012

Deciding To Cross: The Norms And Economics Of Unauthorized Migration, Emily Ryo

Emily Ryo

Why are there so many unauthorized migrants in the United States? Using unique survey data collected in Mexico through the Mexican Migration Project, I develop and test a new decisionmaking model of unauthorized labor migration. The new model considers the economic motivations of prospective migrants, as well as their beliefs, attitudes, and social norms regarding U.S. immigration law and legal authorities. My findings show that perceptions of certainty of apprehension and severity of punishment are not significant determinants of the intent to migrate illegally; however, perceptions of availability of Mexican jobs and the dangers of border crossing are significant determinants …

2012 Public Anthropology Year In Review: Actually, Rick, Florida Could Use A Few More Anthropologists, Ruth Gomberg-Munoz

Ruth Gomberg-Munoz

Here I highlight anthropology that engaged socially relevant issues and pushed the boundaries of public discussions in 2012. In “Debating KONY 2012,” I examine debates surrounding the viral video and anthropologists’ role in illuminating the complexities of globalized conflicts, neocolonialist ideologies, and relationships among people of the world. In “Anthropologists Are the 99%!” I consider the role of anthropologists in the Occupy Movement, both as protest participants and as mediators who have shaped the movement’s impression on the public. With “UndocuAn- thropology,” I highlight how anthropologists have built bridges between immigrant and native-born communities, influenced immigration policy, and advocated for …

The Storyteller: Observations On Murtada Bulbul’S ‘Swineherders’, Sharon Sliwinski

Sharon Sliwinski

This review engages Murtada Bulbul's series of photographs of Bangladeshi swineherders (published in this issue), casting the photographer's treatment as that of a storyteller. On one hand, this treatment suggests the importance of visual-cultural forms for the very legibility of human rights. On the other hand, Bulbul's pictures can teach us something about what it means to live a "bare life," that is, to live at the edges of the human community.

Platform Competition Under Asymmetric Information Dec 2012

Platform Competition Under Asymmetric Information

Hanna Halaburda

In the context of platform competition in a two-sided market, we study how ex-ante uncertainty and ex-post asymmetric information concerning the value of a new technology affects the strategies of the platforms and the market outcome. We find that the incumbent dominates the market by setting the welfare-maximizing level of trade when the difference in the degree of asymmetric information between buyers and sellers is significant. However, if this difference is below a certain threshold, then even the incumbent platform will distort the trade downward. Since a monopoly incumbent would set the welfare-maximizing level of trade, this result indicates that …

Resource Allocation, Affluence And Deadweight Loss When Relative Consumption Matters, Jesse A. Matheson, B. Curtis Eaton Dec 2012

Resource Allocation, Affluence And Deadweight Loss When Relative Consumption Matters, Jesse A. Matheson, B. Curtis Eaton

Jesse A Matheson

We explore the link between affluence and well-being using a simple general equilibrium model with a pure Veblen good. Individuals derive utility from the pure Veblen good based solely on how much they consume relative to others. In equilibrium, consumption of the pure Veblen good is the same for everyone, so the Veblen good contributes nothing to utility. Hence, resources devoted to the Veblen good provide us with a measure of deadweight loss. We ask: Under what preference conditions does the proportion of productive capacity devoted to the pure Veblen good increase as an economy becomes more affluent? In a …

Targeted Business Incentives And Local Labor Markets, Matthew Freedman Dec 2012

Targeted Business Incentives And Local Labor Markets, Matthew Freedman

Matthew Freedman

This paper uses a regression discontinuity design to examine the effects of geographically targeted business incentives on local labor markets. Unlike elsewhere in the U.S., enterprise zone (EZ) designations in Texas are determined in part by a cutoff rule based on census block group poverty rates. Exploiting this discontinuity as a source of quasi-experimental variation in investment and hiring incentives across areas, I find that EZ designation has a positive effect on resident employment, increasing opportunities mainly in lower-paying industries. While business sitings and expansions spurred by the program are more geographically diffuse, EZ designation is associated with increases in …

Valuing Beach Width For Recreational Use Combining Revealed And Stated Preference Data, George R. Parsons, Michael K. Hidrue, Zhe Chen, Naomi Standing, Jonathan Lilley Dec 2012

Valuing Beach Width For Recreational Use Combining Revealed And Stated Preference Data, George R. Parsons, Michael K. Hidrue, Zhe Chen, Naomi Standing, Jonathan Lilley

George Parsons

In this paper we present a travel cost model combining revealed and stated preference data on beach use in Delaware and use it to value changes in beach width. We use an in-person on-site survey at seven bay beaches in the state. The analysis is in two stages. The first is a model for predicting the number of visitors at each site over a 12-month period based on an on-site count of visitors. The second is a single-site travel cost model that combines actual and contingent trip data. We estimate the loss for narrowing beaches to a quarter current width …
