The Social Construction Of Technology: A Case On Mechanical Watches And The Development Of Escapements, Edson Kieu
The Social Construction Of Technology: A Case On Mechanical Watches And The Development Of Escapements, Edson Kieu
Edson Kieu
Mechanical clocks and watches is a technology that we exceedingly take for granted in today’s modern society. As with all technologies that exist today, it has its humble beginnings. In this essay we will explore the conception of a vital mechanism within watches (or clocks) known as the escapement. In examining the evolution of the escapement, this essay will utilize the conceptual underpinnings of the Social Construction of Technological (SCOT) artifacts as well as the Empirical Programme of Relativism (EPOR) to review the development of the escapement within watches stretching across the 13th century till the first half of the …

Study Abroad, Foreign Language Use, And The Communities Standard, Heather W. Allen, Beatrice Dupuy
Study Abroad, Foreign Language Use, And The Communities Standard, Heather W. Allen, Beatrice Dupuy
Heather Willis Allen
Although participation in multilingual communities around the world has been understood to be the raison d'être for foreign language study, the Communities standard has been portrayed as an extracurricular experience and more difficult to weave into instruction than the other standards. This article addresses two questions: 1. Does a study abroad experience facilitate meeting the Communities standard? and 2. How can collegiate foreign language curricula enhance the study abroad experience and fulfillment of the Communities standard? Current trends in study abroad participation by U.S. undergraduates and key research findings on study abroad related to the Communities standard are reviewed. Numerous …

Evolving Notions Of Literacy-Based Teaching: A Case Study Of Graduate Student Instructors, Heather W. Allen, Beatrice Dupuy
Heather Willis Allen
The effectiveness of professional development for future foreign language (FL) professors is more salient than ever given the significant role played by graduate student instructors (GSIs) in undergraduate education and recent calls for change in the collegiate FL curriculum requiring sophisticated understandings of integrating the teaching of language, literature, and culture. Taking a sociocultural theory perspective, this chapter reports on a study of five FL GSIs’ experiences learning to teach that sought to determine how participation in an advanced pedagogy seminar influenced GSIs’ notions of literacy as a framing construct for collegiate FL curricula. Findings showed that through involvement in …

Planning For Meals-On-Wheels: Algorithms And Application, Hakan Yildiz, Michael P. Johnson Jr., Stephen Roehrig
Planning For Meals-On-Wheels: Algorithms And Application, Hakan Yildiz, Michael P. Johnson Jr., Stephen Roehrig
Michael P. Johnson
Home-Delivered Meals provision, also known as Meals-on-Wheels, is a volunteer-staffed activity for which little strategic planning is performed. We develop a Memetic Algorithm to solve the Home Delivered Meals Location Routing Problem. This planning model addresses facility location, allocation of demand to facilities, and design of delivery routes, while balancing efficiency and effectiveness considerations. The case study presented on a large data set shows how trade-off curves, which are very useful for decision making, can be obtained by the method developed.
Empowering Women Through Education And Influence: An Evaluation Of The Indian Mahila Samakhya Program, Eeshani Kandpal, Kathy Baylis, Mary Arends-Kuenning
Empowering Women Through Education And Influence: An Evaluation Of The Indian Mahila Samakhya Program, Eeshani Kandpal, Kathy Baylis, Mary Arends-Kuenning
Kathy Baylis
Mahila Samakhya is an innovative Indian program that attempts to harness local peer networks to change social norms and empower women. While most studies focus on programs that target individuals, only a small number of papers evaluate community-level interventions. This article analyses the effect of this program on women's empowerment outcomes. We attempt to disentangle the mechanisms of the program, separately considering its eff#11;ect on women who work and those who do not work, where the program aff#11;ects the latter group solely through their reservation wage. We also consider the program's e#11;ffect on non-participants, to observe whether there are spillover …
Bridging Vs. Bonding Social Capital And The Management Of Common Pool Resources, Kathy Baylis, Yazhen Gong, Shun Wang
Bridging Vs. Bonding Social Capital And The Management Of Common Pool Resources, Kathy Baylis, Yazhen Gong, Shun Wang
Kathy Baylis
Social capital can facilitate community governance, but not all social capital is alike. We distinguish bonding social capital (within a village) from bridging social capital (between villages), and we compare their effects on the management of a common pool resource. We develop a theoretical model and show that bonding social capital can improve common pool resource management, while the effect of bridging social capital is mixed. We test these findings using primary data from Yunnan, China on social capital and firewood collection on communal lands. We find that bonding social capital decreases the consumption of the common pool resource, and …
The Food Corporation Of India And The Public Distribution System: Impacts On Market Integration In Wheat, Rice, And Pearl Millet, Mindy Mallory, Kathy Baylis
The Food Corporation Of India And The Public Distribution System: Impacts On Market Integration In Wheat, Rice, And Pearl Millet, Mindy Mallory, Kathy Baylis
Kathy Baylis
This paper examines the spatial integration of major staple commodity markets in India. We consider wheat, rice and pearl millet markets, two of which are highly regulated (wheat and rice) and one that is less regulated (pearl millet). Our data come from the states of Bihar, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal, states that produce a large share of India’s cereal grains. Access to food remains an important issue for India as it develops. Because of this, the Indian government regulates the markets for staple foods heavily, requiring almost all grain be marketed through government licensed mandis. The government enforces …
Expanding Horizons: Can Women’S Support Groups Diversify Peer Networks In Rural India?, Eeshani Kandpal, Kathy Baylis
Expanding Horizons: Can Women’S Support Groups Diversify Peer Networks In Rural India?, Eeshani Kandpal, Kathy Baylis
Kathy Baylis
Peer networks in traditional societies may be homogenous and stratified by income or social hierarchy, therefore reinforcing social norms. Conservative social norms will reinforce current bargaining power, which is often skewed to the male in the household. Diversifying networks may improve female bargaining power of those women in the network by allowing them to connect with role models, facilitating information sharing with women who have a different range of experiences, or challenge the social norms in which they usually find themselves. We ask whether Mahila Samakhya, a women's empowerment program, was able to diversity social networks of women in the …

Word From The Chair - Feshe Fire-Ems Education, Rodger E. Broome Phd
Rodger E. Broome
Fire and emergency services is a complex world that presents responders with problems to solve under significant time constraints. We value people who can make decisions on their feet and actualize them quickly with precision. This requires training, education, and experience (TEE).
The Lived-Experience Of Leading A Successful Police Vehicle Pursuit: A Descriptive Phenomenological Psychological Inquiry, Rodger E. Broome Phd
The Lived-Experience Of Leading A Successful Police Vehicle Pursuit: A Descriptive Phenomenological Psychological Inquiry, Rodger E. Broome Phd
Rodger E. Broome
Police vehicle pursuits are inherently dangerous, rapidly evolving, and require police coordination to safely stop and arrest the suspect. Interviews of three US police officers were conducted and the descriptive phenomenological psychological method was used to analyze their naïve accounts of their lived-experiences. The psychological constituents of the experience of leading a successful chase and capture of a fleeing criminal found are: (1) Alert to Possible Car Chase, (2) Suspect Identified, (3) Anxiety and Excitement About the Chase, (4) Awareness of Primary Chase Role, (5) Radio Coordination with Others to Take Actions to Stop the Suspect, (6) Ongoing Evaluation of …
Gestalt Of A Group, Rodger E. Broome Phd
Gestalt Of A Group, Rodger E. Broome Phd
Rodger E. Broome
In the recent past, we have seen news reports in the media regarding police response to group activities like the Occupy Movement. Protests are often couched by their participants as Gandhi-Style ordeals and, by purpose and intention, perhaps that is their original design. The peaceful protesters that desire to sit-in merely to be present or be a bother also become the prey of some of the bad elements in society. So they legitimately need police protection. On the other hand, there are also those who may arrive or are in the design, to incite the crowd to commit acts of …
Firms' Entry, Monetary Policy And The International Business Cycle, Lilia Cavallari
Firms' Entry, Monetary Policy And The International Business Cycle, Lilia Cavallari
Lilia Cavallari
This paper proposes a two-country monetary model with firm entry as a means for alleviating the comovement puzzles in international business cycle models. It shows that business formation can generate fluctuations in output, employment, investment and trade flows close to those in the data while at the same time providing positive international comovements. Simulations show that the presence of imported investment goods is essential for replicating these facts. Keywords: firm entry, international business cycle, international comovements, comovement puzzles, Taylor rule, firm markups. JEL codes: E31; E32; E52
Emergency Service Leader Perceptions Of Legitimacy, John R. Fisher, R. Jeffery Maxfield
Emergency Service Leader Perceptions Of Legitimacy, John R. Fisher, R. Jeffery Maxfield
Dr. John R. Fisher
This study adds to the qualitative data showing how leaders in the emergency services perceive legitimacy and the bases of power. The study examines leader perception of the reasons their subordinates view their leadership as legitimate. Two definitions of legitimacy are presented: the traditional viewpoint of French and Raven (1959) associating legitimate power “with having status or formal job authority” and the other proposed by Maxfield (2012) in the LEAP leadership model basing legitimacy more on the characteristics leaders bring to their positions. Emergency service students interviewed leaders in their career fields, determining their view of legitimacy. They found that …
The Disaster Press Conference: Form And Function, John R. Fisher
The Disaster Press Conference: Form And Function, John R. Fisher
Dr. John R. Fisher
This study uses a structural functional perspective in examining the form and function of a presidential disaster press conference on May 27, 2010 about the Deepwater BP Oil Spill. Clayman and Heritage (2002) proposed a framework to examine the questions and responses in a press conference while Fisher (1991) offered a method to study media function. These were both applied to the disaster press conference. Findings were used to develop recommendations for public officials and PIOs in working with the media. Despite the fact that this case suggests an adversarial relationship between public officials and the media, public officials need …
