The participants in this study reported and described perceptions of their lived experiences as counselor …

Professional School Counselors And Relational Aggression: Training, Perceptions, Barriers, And Interventions, Catherine G. Mcdermott May 2014

Professional School Counselors And Relational Aggression: Training, Perceptions, Barriers, And Interventions, Catherine G. Mcdermott

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Relational aggression (RA) is a type of bullying in which the relationship is used as the agent of harm (Crick & Grotpeter, 1995). RA behaviors are intended to impair or ruin reputations, friendships, and feelings of inclusion in a peer group (Putallaz et al., 2007). Professional School Counselors (PSCs) are charged to be social justice advocates for students; RA is a social justice issue because the effects of RA bullying, victimization, and bullying/victimization lead to poor academic achievement. Recent literature suggests that PSCs do not perceive the effects of RA to be as serious as the effects of physical and …

Contested Road Space: Public Narratives And Bus Rapid Transit In Indore, India, Lucien V. Bruno Iv

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) has a demonstrated capacity to improve safety, mobility and accessibility for multiple types of road users. In India, where road safety is an ongoing problem, the national government has supported cities’ efforts to implement BRT as a cost-effective tool to improve urban travel. The case of Indore’s iBus attests to the cultural and institutional barriers that Indian cities may face in gaining public support for BRT. After a contentious implementation process, the High Court ruled to open the dedicated bus lane to private automobiles, resulting in drops in ridership and increases in accidents and travel delay. …

Achievement Unlocked! A Digital Badge Primer & Workshop, Emily Ford

Library Faculty and Staff Publications and Presentations

Video of the workshop is available online at: http://vimeo.com/96035501

Digital badges--much like their analog predecessor the scouting badge-- can tell us a lot about a badge bearer’s accomplishments and skills. We all know that someone who has earned a First Aid badge is proficient in doctoring small wounds, and perhaps even providing CPR! Digital badges function the same way. They certify and communicate an individual’s knowledge, skills, and/or achievements.

Digital badges have been adopted by social media sites such as 4Square to recognize users’ achievements and are growing in popularity. They are being used by educational institutions as a way …

Self-Referencing Effects Of Social Networking On Judgments In An Employment Context, Abigail Lewis May 2014

Self-Referencing Effects Of Social Networking On Judgments In An Employment Context, Abigail Lewis

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

This study examined how various components of a social networking website (SNW) as well as rater characteristics can impact employee evaluations. Participants were presented with a job description, an applicant résumé, an applicant SNW profile, and a survey to measure rater characteristics. Professionally-oriented Facebook profiles received higher ratings than their counterparts, evaluations differed based on rater characteristics (e.g., personality), and raters varied in their perceptions of the relative value of SNW profiles. As these findings demonstrate that SNW profiles influence employer judgments to varying degrees based on rater characteristics and perceptions, organizations should use caution when viewing SNW profiles until …

Through The Hermit's Shell - The Regulation Of Ngos In North Korea, Jeffrey Walker

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

North Korea gained the moniker “Hermit Kingdom” as the country largely withdrew from interactions with the West during the Cold War. However, NGOs have quietly worked within the country since a famine in the mid-1990s pressured the North Korean government to request international aid. How did these NGOs begin operations in North Korea? How are the rules and regulations governing these NGOs decided? This research attempts to answer these questions through interviews with individuals who have worked or are currently working in North Korea, as well as, through related literature, both academic and non-academic. The findings are as follows: the …

Mood And Experience: Effects Of Ostracism On Diathesis Activation, Rachel Archer May 2014

Mood And Experience: Effects Of Ostracism On Diathesis Activation, Rachel Archer

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

The stress-diathesis model is a well-known but little-tested theory which states that people can possess diatheses, or vulnerabilities, to certain mental disorders such as depression or anxiety. These diatheses are activated when a person is under stress. This study examined how ostracism as a temporary stressor can trigger existing diatheses and cause increases in depression symptoms among at-risk people. Theory suggests that ostracism is likely to trigger symptoms of depression in at-risk people. This study is an extension of a study conducted by Luxton, Ingram, and Wenzlaff (2006) in which people with naturally varying levels of diathesis factors were exposed …

Fine-Tuning The User Experience: Integration Of Blackboard And Libguides, Gerald R. Natal May 2014

Fine-Tuning The User Experience: Integration Of Blackboard And Libguides, Gerald R. Natal

Gerald R Natal

At many institutions, students are required to use the Blackboard online course management system. Often, links are provided to library resources through Blackboard. An extension of this service was developed a few years ago that enabled the delivery of course-related content at the point-of-need by utilizing LibGuides. The desired outcome was that students would have an improved research experience, produce better student work, steer students away from simple, uniformed Google searching to quality databases, and improve usage of library resources. This presentation gives background information on the process and details the steps necessary to implement the integration of these two …

Smart Pull For Remote Storage: How To Keep (Mostly) Everyone Happy When Making A Large Collection Move To Remote Storage, Tom Klingler

Tom Klingler

This paper includes an in-depth look at one university library’s technique in down-sizing its collection to make room for new services and to provide patrons with a more relevant, useful collection of books. Kent State University’s “smart pull” process included moving a large collection of books to remote storage to create these new services in the library. This process led to the sorting of the library’s large collection based on factors such as low use and publication date. It also allowed for continuous sorting of the collection as demand for books in the remote storage increased. The paper discusses its …

The Relationship Between Import Penetration And Operation Of The U.S. Textile And Apparel Industries From 2002 To 2008, Sheng Lu, Kitty Dickerson May 2014

The Relationship Between Import Penetration And Operation Of The U.S. Textile And Apparel Industries From 2002 To 2008, Sheng Lu, Kitty Dickerson

Sheng Lu

The U.S. textile and apparel (T&A) industries have respectively adopted various restructuring strategies in recent years which fundamentally changed the way the two industries operate and the shifting relationship of each sector with imports. This study empirically tests the relationship between import penetration and the operation of the U.S. T&A industries based on data at 4-digit North American Industrial Classification System (NAICS) code level from 2002-2008. Results from the panel data model show that overall the U.S. textile industry formed a weak cooperative relationship with import penetration level in the U.S. market and a neutral relationship was suggested for the …

The United States-Korea Free Trade Agreement (Korus) And Its Impact On China’S Textile And Apparel Exports To The United States, Sheng Lu, Kitty Dickerson

Sheng Lu

This study is an empirical evaluation of the impact of the U.S.-Korea Free Trade Agreement (KORUS) on China’s textile and apparel (T&A) exports to the United States, with special focus on potential trade diversion effects of the agreement. On the basis of estimated export similarity index and trade elasticity of substitution values for T&A products of China and South Korea, trade diversion caused by the KORUS is predicted to most strongly affect China’s apparel exports (in HS Chapters 60-63). The KORUS may also affect China’s exports in other T&A categories (in HS Chapters 51, 52, 56, 57 and 59), but …

NSF-NIJ IPV Prevention Workshop

Overview

Within the last 20 years, gender-based violence (GBV) has gained increased attention globally. GBV is defined as types of violence that primarily women/girls experience, including physical violence (e.g., hitting, punching, kicked, slapped, choked, hurt with a weapon, or otherwise physically hurt), sexual violence (e.g. unprotected forced sex, coercive behaviors, including sexual slavery and coerced abortion), and psychological harm (e.g. controlling behaviors, stalking, threats of violence). These acts of violence are perpetrated by members of women/girl’s family, acquaintances, and/or strangers in the home, community and/or during armed conflict. Globally, an estimated 35% of women experience physical and/or sexual violence in …

The Long Haul: Risks Associated With Livestock Transport, Michael Greger

Michael Greger, MD, FACLM

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations describes live animal transport as “ideally suited for spreading disease,” given that animals may originate from different herds or flocks and are “confined together for long periods in a poorly ventilated stressful environment.” Given the associated “serious animal and public health problems,” the Federation of Veterinarians of Europe has called for the replacement of the long-distance transportation of live animals for slaughter as much as possible to a “carcass-only trade.” In the United States, more than 50 million live cattle, sheep, and pigs and an unknown number of the more …

Trait Selection And Welfare Of Genetically Engineered Animals In Agriculture, Michael Greger May 2014

Trait Selection And Welfare Of Genetically Engineered Animals In Agriculture, Michael Greger

Michael Greger, MD, FACLM

The release of the Final Guidance from the US Food and Drug Administration on the commercialization of genetically engineered animals has sparked renewed discussion over the ethical, consumer, and regulatory implications of transgenesis in animal agriculture. Animal welfare critiques have focused on unexpected phenotypic effects in animals used in transgenic research, rather than on the health and welfare implications of the intended productivity enhancement. Unless breeding goals are redefined to reflect social concerns, the occurrence and magnitude of undesirable side effects may increase and consumer confidence in the nascent technology may be undermined.
