‘How Does That Itsy Bitsy Spider Do It?’: Severely Traumatized Children’S Development Of Resilience In Psychotherapy, Katherine Tyson Mccrea Professor Dec 2013

‘How Does That Itsy Bitsy Spider Do It?’: Severely Traumatized Children’S Development Of Resilience In Psychotherapy, Katherine Tyson Mccrea Professor

Katherine Tyson McCrea

This paper explores the ways in which traumatized children make use of a treatment relationship to develop their resilience. First, the concept of resilience is deepened by synthesizing elements from two theories: 1) Self-Determination Theory’s emphasis on the importance for a person’s well-being of her/his choices of goals of relatedness, autonomy, and competence (Ryan & Deci, 2008), and 2) Hope Theory’s formulation that central constituents of hope are the ability to conceptualize pathways towards goals and a conviction of competence in goal attainment (Snyder, 2002). Applying this understanding of resilience to long-term child-centered psychotherapy, this study describes how the therapist …

“IʼM A Leader Of All Of Them To Tell The Truth”: Participatory Action Principles For Uplifting Social Work Research Partnersʼ Identities, Katherine Tyson Mccrea Professor Dec 2013

“IʼM A Leader Of All Of Them To Tell The Truth”: Participatory Action Principles For Uplifting Social Work Research Partnersʼ Identities, Katherine Tyson Mccrea Professor

Katherine Tyson McCrea

Identity, understood from many vantage points, is continually evolving based on relationship experiences, including those relationships established in social and behavioral research. Whether rendered anonymous in large quantitatively-studied samples, or intimately known in qualitative studies, those contributing to science in a role termed “subject” receive, through the research, definitions of their identities. Because those identities are part of published social research, identities created in the research process become part of the public discourse about persons in the “subjects’” situations, and also influence policies that in turn influence persons’ lives. For their part, the identities of social and behavioral researchers also …

Clients’ Hope Arises From Social Workers’ Compassion: Young Clients’ Perspectives On Surmounting The Obstacles Of Disadvantage, Deanna Guthrie Asst. Orofessor, Victoria Ellison, King Sami, Katherine Tyson Mccrea Professor Dec 2013

Clients’ Hope Arises From Social Workers’ Compassion: Young Clients’ Perspectives On Surmounting The Obstacles Of Disadvantage, Deanna Guthrie Asst. Orofessor, Victoria Ellison, King Sami, Katherine Tyson Mccrea Professor

While social workers strive to build disadvantaged African-American youth’s resilience by improving services, rarely are those youths’ perspectives included in research. In a previous participatory action evaluation of an after school program, disadvantaged African-American youth prioritized instructors’ compassion, and said compassion engendered hope. This study explores their connection between compassion and hope more deeply. After summarizing the literature and focusing on Snyder’s hope theory, this study examines the connection between compassion and hope as individual traits (using standardized scales), and as relational, action-based experiences (using qualitative analysis of interview data). Instructor actions youth identified as compassionate and as engendering hope …

Examining The Methods For Investigating Behavioral Clues Of Special Schooled Children, Hazreena Hussein, Md Nasir Daud Dec 2013

Examining The Methods For Investigating Behavioral Clues Of Special Schooled Children, Hazreena Hussein, Md Nasir Daud

Hazreena Hussein

This paper discusses the authors’ use of a combination of methods to understand the engagement of special needs children with design features in sensory gardens of two schools in Britain. In addition to observation and behavior mapping, the authors interviewed landscape architects, teachers and therapists to anticipate the children’s behavior when experiencing sensory gardens. We report how these groups’ anticipations differed from what we observed. While the groups anticipated that aesthetic value relates significantly to users’ behavior in the garden, we observed that sensory value has a stronger bearing on the behavior. The potential of this finding is important for …

Economic Change And Evolutionary Perspectives., Mario Pianta Dec 2013

Economic Change And Evolutionary Perspectives., Mario Pianta

Mario Pianta

Economic studies with an evolutionary perspective have put the process of change at the centre of the analysis - replacing equilibrium views of economic activity – and have generally focused on the two mechanisms of variety generation – provided by innovation - and selection – provided by market processes, leading to a prevalence of microeconomic investigations. Recent developments in evolutionary biology have emphasised the equally important role of cooperation; cooperative economic behaviour is, in fact, as important as market competition for understanding macroeconomic processes, the role of institutions and public policies, opening up new directions for research. This interdisciplinary discussion …

Slowing Trade: Global Activism Against Trade Liberalization., Mario Pianta Dec 2013

Slowing Trade: Global Activism Against Trade Liberalization., Mario Pianta

Mario Pianta

The impact of global activism against trade liberalisation is examined in this article through an analysis of the initiatives of cross border civil society networks and with a particular attention to the failed 2003 WTO Ministerial Conference in Cancun. Key aspects considered here include the internal dynamics of mobilisation – which was characterised by a strong framing and widespread protest - and the political opportunities in WTO negotiations, which were marked by divisions within the North and resistance by a large group of Southern governments. In the failure of the WTO Millennium Round in Cancun and the loss of momentum …

An Industrial Policy For Europe, Mario Pianta Dec 2013

An Industrial Policy For Europe, Mario Pianta

Mario Pianta

After Europe’s long stagnation, a debate is emerging on how industrial capacity could be reconstructed. The article reviews current EU policies and provides the rationale for a new industrial policy at the European level. Such public action could help address current macroeconomic, industrial, innovation, cohesion and environmental problems and would be crucial for the recovery of countries of the “periphery” that have been hit hardest by the crisis. A range of proposals for organising, implementing and funding a new industrial policy – focusing on selected economic activities - are presented, combining action at the European, national and local levels.

Una Politica Industriale Per L’Europa, Mario Pianta, Matteo Lucchese Dec 2013

Una Politica Industriale Per L’Europa, Mario Pianta, Matteo Lucchese

Mario Pianta

Erawatch Country Reports 2013: Italy, Leopoldo Nascia, Mario Pianta

Mario Pianta

The evolution of the research and innovation (R&I) system in Italy has been heavily affected by the economic crisis, the reduction in public expenditure associated to austerity programmes, and the fall of private R&D and investment efforts. Italy’s GDP has fallen in 2012 (-2.5%) and in 2013 (-1.8%); Eurostat forecasts a slight growth of GDP in 2014, but at a lower rate than the EU28 average. The share of R&D in GDP in 2012 is 1.27%, as opposed to a EU28 average of 2.06. Italy’s level continues to be far from the 1.53% share of GDP stated as the target …

Professor Vibhuti Patel

This philosophically nuanced work examines discourse on ‘women’s question’ with profound theoretical rigour. The book highlights contemporary debate among feminists in the context of post-coloniality. It deconstructs body, gender and identity projected by the feminist standpoint theory and provides critical reflection on inter-sectionality of social construction of ‘body’ and ‘others’ in the context of power relations and scientific rationality. The book enriches our understanding on ‘Third World feminism’ by questioning ‘embodied knowledges’. The author makes an honest effort to delineate ethical priorities in foundational structuring of heterogeneous feminist efforts to question universal forms of knowing and enhances reader’s understanding on …

When Does A Platform Create Value By Limiting Choice?, Ramon Casadesus-Masanell, Hanna Halaburda Dec 2013

When Does A Platform Create Value By Limiting Choice?, Ramon Casadesus-Masanell, Hanna Halaburda

Hanna Halaburda

We present a theory for why it might be rational for a platform to limit the number of applications available on it. Our model is based on the observation that even if users prefer application variety, applications often also exhibit direct network effects. When there are direct network effects, users prefer to consume the same applications to benefit from consumption complementarities. We show that the combination of preference for variety and consumption complementarities gives rise to (i) a commons problem (to better satisfy their individual preference for variety, users have an incentive to consume more applications than the number that …

Were Jews In Interwar Poland More Educated?, Ran Abramitzky, Hanna Halaburda Dec 2013

Were Jews In Interwar Poland More Educated?, Ran Abramitzky, Hanna Halaburda

Hanna Halaburda

Research suggests that Jews have tended to be more educated than non-Jews. We confirm this finding for the case of interwar Poland, but show that it is driven by a composition effect. In particular, most Jews lived in cities and most non-Jews lived in rural areas, and people in cities were more educated than people in villages regardless of their religion. We find that while Jews were more educated than non-Jews in rural Poland, they were less educated than non-Jews in urban Poland.

Anticipated Regret In Time-Based Work-Family Conflict, J. Bagger, Jochen Matthias Reb, A. Li Dec 2013

Anticipated Regret In Time-Based Work-Family Conflict, J. Bagger, Jochen Matthias Reb, A. Li

Jochen Reb

The primary purpose of this research was to investigate the role of anticipated regret in time-based work-family conflict decisions. A total of 90 working parents responded to a decision making problem describing a time-based conflict between a work event and a family event. Participants' preference for which event to attend constituted the dependent variable. Independent variables were participants' work and family centralities. Anticipated regret for choosing the work option and anticipated regret for choosing the family option were measured as hypothesized mediators. Structural equation modeling revealed that anticipated regret for choosing the family option mediated the relationship between work centrality …

Projection Equilibrium: Definition And Applications To Social Investment And Persuasion (Sept 2014 Version: Http://Works.Bepress.Com/Kristof_Madarasz/35), Kristof Madarasz

People exaggerate the extent to which their private information is shared with others. This paper offers a solution concept for a class of Bayesian games where people wrongly think that if they can condition their strategy on an event others can as well. I apply the model to a variety of settings. I first consider a social investment problem where the value of one's investment depends on whether others invest. Players face uncertainty about their opponents valuations. By projecting information, people mis-attribute such symmetric uncertainty into others having antagonistic preferences. Even if all parties prefer mutual investment, none invests, yet …
