Comfort Food For All: The Scalability Of Lms-Embedded Librarianship, Beth E. Tumbleson, John J. Burke

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2012

Embedded librarianship provides information literacy instruction right where students prefer to do course related research: online. The learning management system (LMS) provides an effective arena for librarians to collaborate with professors and reach students with library services alongside course content. How scalable, though, is this service so that it can meet the needs of all students? Presenters will share data from a 2011 international survey, material from the professional literature, and the experiences of LMS embedded librarians to help answer this question. Time will be spent discussing how to reorganize information literacy efforts and workflow within the library to address …

Collaborating Across Campuses And Continents: Welcome To The Future!, Kimberly Brady, Nita Bryant

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2012

Historically, information literacy has depended on collaborations between librarians and resident faculty in specific disciplines, but new models are needed to accommodate multidisciplinary research and multi-institutional degree programs. This session describes how one model evolved to support the research needs of graduate students enrolled in the International Programme in Addiction Studies offered simultaneously by three universities on three continents: the University of Adelaide, Virginia Commonwealth University, and Kings College, London. The presenters will discuss opportunities and challenges posed by collaborating across campuses, disciplines, institutions, and time zones, and conclude by considering the potential of this model for future collaborations.

What Predicts The Effectiveness Of Foreign Language Pronunciation Instruction?: Investigating The Role Of Perception And Other Individual Differences, Elizabeth M. Kissling Nov 2014

What Predicts The Effectiveness Of Foreign Language Pronunciation Instruction?: Investigating The Role Of Perception And Other Individual Differences, Elizabeth M. Kissling

Latin American, Latino and Iberian Studies Faculty Publications

This study investigated second language (L2) learners’ perception of L2 sounds as an individual difference that predicted their improvement in pronunciation after receiving instruction. Learners were given explicit pronunciation instruction in a series of modules added to their Spanish as a foreign language curriculum and were then tested on their pronunciation accuracy. Their perception of the target sounds was measured with an AX discrimination task. Though the best predictor of pronunciation posttest score was pretest score, perception made a unique and significant contribution. The other factors associated with better pronunciation of some L2 sounds were time spent using Spanish outside …

Social Desire Paths: A New Theoretical Concept To Increase The Usability Of Social Science Research In Society, Laura Nichols Nov 2014

Social Desire Paths: A New Theoretical Concept To Increase The Usability Of Social Science Research In Society, Laura Nichols

Sociology

Social scientists are well-trained to observe and chart social trends, but less experienced at presenting scientific findings in formats that can inform social change work. In this article, I propose a new theoretical concept that provides a mechanism by which social science research can be more effectively applied for proactive policy, organizational, and program development. The approach is to use the metaphor of “desire paths” from landscape architecture to show how social scientists can identify and analyze social desire paths that appear on the social structural landscape. Social desire paths usually emerge because existing formal structures do not meet individual …

The Impact Of Telecommuting On Personal Vehicle Usage And Environmental Sustainability, Pengyu Zhu, Susan G. Mason Nov 2014

The Impact Of Telecommuting On Personal Vehicle Usage And Environmental Sustainability, Pengyu Zhu, Susan G. Mason

Urban Studies and Community Development Faculty Publications and Presentations

To understand whether telecommuting could be part of the policy solutions for greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction in the transportation sector, this study uses instrumental variable Tobit models and data from 2001 and 2009 National Household Travel Surveys to explore whether telecommuting reduces or increases the daily work and non-work vehicle miles traveled (VMT). Our findings suggest telecommuters have more VMT for both daily work and non-work trips than non-telecommuters. Adding the findings that telecommuting has no impact on other non-working household member’s daily total (non-work) trips, we can possibly argue that households with telecommuter(s) tend to have higher daily total …

The Underground Press In Grand Rapids: The Root, Ian M. Post Nov 2014

The Underground Press In Grand Rapids: The Root, Ian M. Post

Grand Valley Journal of History

In the midst of the socially turbulent 1960s, the underground press movement in America sought to restore journalism and report on issues that the rising youth and New Left believed were important. Many believed these newspapers were subversive because of the content and goals of their publications, which drove their creators "underground". Despite the political and social conservatism of West Michigan, the Grand Rapids area was not exempt from the underground press movement. Several underground newspapers, discovered in the Grand Rapids Public Library's archives, provide an account of the local contribution to this national context, specifically in The Root.

Development Of Simulation Of Short Rotation Woody Crops - Hybrid Populars In Swat Model, Tian Guo, Bernard Engel Nov 2014

Development Of Simulation Of Short Rotation Woody Crops - Hybrid Populars In Swat Model, Tian Guo, Bernard Engel

Purdue GIS Day

The objective of this study is to establish growth parameters of hybrid poplar in SWAT model. Energy security and sustainable require a suite of biomass crops, including woody species. Selected hybrid poplar is expected as bioenergy feedstock for the capability of rapid growth. The quality of water and soils will be a concern when hybrid poplars are planted at wide geographic and latitudinal rang as a biomass feedstock. In this study, Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) modeling was employed to simulate the water and soil impacts of the hybrid poplar. In SWAT, fast growing tree growth parameters for hybrid …

Functional Approach To Simulating Short Rotation Woody Crops In Process Based Models, Tian Guo, Bernard Engel Nov 2014

Functional Approach To Simulating Short Rotation Woody Crops In Process Based Models, Tian Guo, Bernard Engel

Purdue GIS Day

Short rotation woody crops (SRWC) such as hybrid poplar have great potential as a biofuel feedstock. Biomass yields and yield stability at potential sites are important considerations when such SRWC is widely planted. To simulate poplar growth accurately, the functional components and parameters of hybrid poplar Tristis #1 (Populus balsamifera L. × P.tristis Fisch) were determined, and related algorithms improved in ALMANAC and SWAT based on improved simulation of leaf area and plant biomass as well as biomass partitioning. The improved tree growth simulation was applied to hybrid poplar plots in Wisconsin, and the modeled biomass yield, and LAI were …

Estimation Of Forest Interior Condition In Southern Appalachian Mountains Using Airborne Lidar Data, Gang Shao, Songlin Fei, Buddhika D. Madurapperuma, Guofan Shao Nov 2014

Estimation Of Forest Interior Condition In Southern Appalachian Mountains Using Airborne Lidar Data, Gang Shao, Songlin Fei, Buddhika D. Madurapperuma, Guofan Shao

Purdue GIS Day

Sustainability of forest ecosystem requires maintenance of forest cover and forest interior conditions. Sustaining forest cover supplies ecosystem goods and services and maintains biomass and carbon and nitrogen storage. Forest interior supports ecosystem functioning and provides particular physical and biological environments for plant and animal species that depend on a type of habitat isolated from non-forest land cover areas and prohibit the infestation of invasive species. Land cover maps derived from satellite imagery were broadly applied to assess spatial patterns of forest ecosystem and its dynamic. However, existing land cover maps at landscape scale are insufficient to provide information of …

Purdue GIS Day

This study examines how the vertical structure of forests and the variation in forest canopy tree composition relates to where forest plant invasions occur at a regional scale. We used LiDAR data on vertical structure of forests collected across 16 counties of western North Carolina, and Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) abundance data of invasive plant species and canopy tree species from 575 plots. We found that nearly one third of these plots were invaded by at least one invasive plant species (range = 1 to 8 species). We derived canopy gaps/clear-cut areas of the study site using LiDAR data …

Beyond Gis: The Promise Of Spatial Humanities, David J. Bodenhamer

Purdue GIS Day

Geospatial technologies such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have facilitated the (re)discovery of space for humanists. Yet until recently GIS has had only limited ability to move us beyond a map of geographical space into a richer, more evocative concepts of place based on history and memory. Over the past few years, GIScientists have made advances in spatial multi-media, in GIS-enabled web services, geo-visualization, cyber geography, and virtual reality that provide capabilities far exceeding the abilities of GIS on its own. This presentation will explore how the convergence of technologies, including but not limited to GIS, has led to the …
