The Emerging American Empire: Republican Capitalist Development In The Usa, 1830-1930, Richard Hogan Nov 2014

The Emerging American Empire: Republican Capitalist Development In The Usa, 1830-1930, Richard Hogan

Purdue GIS Day

Capital Accumulation, territorial expansion, and the rise and fall of political party systems mark the history of the American Empire, 1830-1930. During this time, the USA emerged from colonial dependency at the edge of the British Empire (after the War of 1812) and established a bipartisan political system (after the election of Jackson in 1828), which was destroyed by the irrepressible conflict between institutionalized Slavery and the challenge of Abolitionism, 1830-1860, culminating in the Civil War. After the election of 1860, a new bipartisan system and renewed industrial capitalist expansion (especially after the political storm from Reconstruction to Populism, 1876-1896) …

Tablet-Based Mobile Gis Approaches To Archaeological Data Collection, Ian Lindsay Nov 2014

Tablet-Based Mobile Gis Approaches To Archaeological Data Collection, Ian Lindsay

Purdue GIS Day

Over the past 15 years, archaeological research in northern Armenia has documented the unique evolution of prehistoric complex societies in the South Caucasus, where complex, fortress-centered institutions emerged during the Late Bronze Age (c.1500-1150 BC) not from settled farming villages—as is more typical of archaic states—but from mobile herding communities. As the costs of archaeological fieldwork continue to rise, resulting in shorter and more intensive field seasons, researchers are leveraging new technologies to improve the efficiency and accuracy of data collection in the field. An increasingly popular solution in archaeology is the use of “paperless” site recording strategies that enhance …

Conflict Engagement: A Contingency Model In Theory And Practice, Jay Rothman Nov 2014

Conflict Engagement: A Contingency Model In Theory And Practice, Jay Rothman

Peace and Conflict Studies

The systematic study and applied practice of conflict resolution is now a few decades old and is evolving into its own field and perhaps towards its own discipline (Avruch, 2013). I believe an essential way forward towards a more robust field and discipline is to build a parsimonious contingency approach. That is, an approach for applying our best theoretical and analytical tools to diagnosing the nature and status of a given conflict and then systematically and adaptively matching up the best methods for constructively engaging the conflict as it evolves. Fisher and Keashly (1991) pioneered contingency theory in international conflict …

Comparisons between the two groups are analyzed in services offered or received, sanctions imposed, employment status, supervision revocation and new arrests in the 18 months following prison release.

Stepping Up: Burden Sharing By Nato's Newest Members, Joel R. Hillison Dr. Nov 2014

Stepping Up: Burden Sharing By Nato's Newest Members, Joel R. Hillison Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

This book examines the burden sharing behavior of new NATO members. It makes the argument that new NATO members are burden sharing at a greater rate than older NATO members. It also suggests that NATO’s expansion did not lead to greater free-riding behavior in NATO, contrary to the predictions of the collective action literature. This analysis reveals that new NATO members have demonstrated the willingness to contribute to NATO missions, but are often constrained by their limited capabilities. This argument is supported using case studies, interviews with key NATO officials, and quantitative analysis of NATO defense expenditures and troop contributions.

From Social Media Data To Human Behavior Patterns: Analyzing Spatio-Temporal Dynamics Of Tweets In Midwest College Towns, Yue Li, Jie Shan

Purdue GIS Day

Twitter, the most popular micro-blogging site, having over 500 million registered users as of 2012 and creating over 340 million tweets per day, has caught the attention of socio-geographic researchers. With its availability from mobile phones, Twitter allows users to send messages with their geographic coordinates. Thus, with respect to the huge quantity and large diversity of crowds publishing tweets, massive valuable geosocial knowledge can be extracted, which can provide important implications for various applications, such as human geography, urban science, location-based services, targeted advertising, content delivery networks, and social media research. This study aims to uncover human behavior patterns, …

A Game-Theoretic Analysis Of The Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, Peter Revesz Nov 2014

A Game-Theoretic Analysis Of The Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, Peter Revesz

CSE Conference and Workshop Papers

Although nuclear non-proliferation is an almost universal human desire, in practice, the negotiated treaties appear unable to prevent the steady growth of the number of states that have nuclear weapons. We propose a computational model for understanding the complex issues behind nuclear arms negotiations, the motivations of various states to enter a nuclear weapons program and the ways to diffuse crisis situations.

Social Workers As Social Change Agents: Social Innovation, Social Intrapreneurship, And Social Entrepreneurship, Monica Nandan, Manuel London, Tricia Bent-Goodley

Faculty Articles

This article explores and describes social innovation, social intrapreneurship, and social entrepreneurship practiced by social workers within human service organizations. Each year, the nature and complexity of clients’ problems and challenges experienced by communities continuously evolves and grows. These challenges call for social workers to lead and facilitate social change that can have a lasting impact on communities and people. The authors report findings from an exploratory, descriptive study conducted with ten social workers on these practices. The findings point to the need to develop and integrate these contents within social work education and further promote dual-degree graduate programs.
