The Impact Of Library Resource Utilization On Undergraduate Students' Academic Performance: A Propensity Score Matching Design, Felly Kot, Jennifer Jones Dec 2013

The Impact Of Library Resource Utilization On Undergraduate Students' Academic Performance: A Propensity Score Matching Design, Felly Kot, Jennifer Jones

Jennifer L. Jones

This study uses three cohorts of first-time, full-time undergraduate students (N=8,652) at a large, metropolitan, public research university to examine the impact of student use of three library resources (workstations, study rooms, and research clinics) on academic performance. To deal with self-selection bias and estimate this impact more accurately, we used propensity score matching. Using this unique approach allowed us to construct treatment and control groups with similar background characteristics. We found that using a given library resource was associated with a small, but also meaningful, gain in first-term grade point average, net of other factors.

Confluence Of Rivers: The Indigenous Tribes Of Idaho, Rodney Frey, Robert Mccarl Dec 2013

Confluence Of Rivers: The Indigenous Tribes Of Idaho, Rodney Frey, Robert Mccarl

Robert S. McCarl

Like the confluence of the great rivers, the histories of the indigenous tribes of Idaho represent the intermingling of the waters of distinct rivers. Among the many rivers, there are two pivotal rivers that are essential to understanding these rich histories. One carries the waters of each tribe's particular oral traditions, its indigenous culture. These waters are rich with languages, songs, and aesthetics, with family, kinship, and ecological orientations, and with stories of creation, such as those of Coyote, Grizzly Bear, and other Animal Peoples. This is a river expressive of the unique heritage and dreams of sovereign peoples. Flowing …

Psychosocial Moderators Of Perceived Stress, Anxiety And Depression In University Students: An International Study, Peta Stapleton, Aileen Pidgeon, Stephanie Mcgrath, Heidi Magyar, Barbara Lo Dec 2013

Psychosocial Moderators Of Perceived Stress, Anxiety And Depression In University Students: An International Study, Peta Stapleton, Aileen Pidgeon, Stephanie Mcgrath, Heidi Magyar, Barbara Lo

Peta B. Stapleton

Extensive research shows university students experience high levels of stress, which can lead to the development of mental health problems such as anxiety and depression. Preliminary evidence supports the role of psychosocial factors such as perceived social support (PSS) and campus connectedness (CC) as protective factors in the development of mental health problems in university students. However, research conducted on the potential ameliorating effects of social support on stress applying Cohen and Wills’ (1985) stress-buffering hypothesis produced weak, inconsistent, and even contradictory results. In addition, little attention has been given to examining the protective role of CC in the relationships …

Situation Awareness And Maritime Traffic: Having Awareness Or Being In Control?, Fulko Van Westrenen, Gesa Praetorius Dec 2013

Situation Awareness And Maritime Traffic: Having Awareness Or Being In Control?, Fulko Van Westrenen, Gesa Praetorius

Gesa Praetorius

Situation awareness (SA) is generally seen as a mental representation of the system state, an objective measure of the ‘situation out there’. In this article, the authors make an argument that SA can only have a meaning in relation to the task of the user and characteristics of the system. This will be argued with the help of a specific environment: vessel traffic monitoring. The long-time constants and the complex constraints imposed on the ship require that the operator monitoring the traffic has a good SA: the operator must make long-term predictions about possible traffic developments. For this, being in …

Multitier Screening And Identification, Lee Wilkinson Dec 2013

Multitier Screening And Identification, Lee Wilkinson

Lee A Wilkinson, PhD

Although autism spectrum disorder (ASD) affects approximately 1% of the school-age population, it is not unusual for children with mild levels of impairment to remain unidentified until well after entering school. A recent study examining the timing of identification among children with autism using a population-based sample from an ongoing surveillance effort across 13 sites in the United States found the gap between potential and actual age of identification (for those identified) to be in the range of 2.7 to 3.7 years. Combined with the fact that more than one quarter of cases were never identified as having ASD through …

Long-Term Weight Loss, Peta Stapleton Dec 2013

Long-Term Weight Loss, Peta Stapleton

Peta B. Stapleton

There is little doubt as to the adverse physical effects of being overweight or obese. Obesity increases cardiovascular disease risk factors, Type 2 Diabetes, and overall mortality. Current approaches to addressing this epidemic have included combined dietary and physical activity approaches and of late, behavioral strategies to influence the weight loss process such as motivation strategies. However, it appears the more time that elapses between the end of a diet and the follow-up period, the more weight is regained. While studies have examined factors that contribute to longer term weight maintenance, they still continue to highlight aspects relating to individual …

Pleasure Policies: Debating Development Plans In Southern California's Wine Country, Kevin Yelvington, Laurel Dillon-Sumner, Jason Simms Dec 2013

Pleasure Policies: Debating Development Plans In Southern California's Wine Country, Kevin Yelvington, Laurel Dillon-Sumner, Jason Simms

Jason L Simms

On 11 March 2014, the Board of Supervisors of Riverside County in southern California, USA, voted to approve the Wine Country Community Plan, culminating a nearly six-year policy and planning process that would pave the way for the expansion of the Temecula Valley’s wineries and wine tourism complex. The exercise in state-led development was a triumph for the plan’s major proponents, but this does not mean that the Plan was accepted by all elements of the community nor does it mean that the approval process was a smooth and orderly one. This article takes as its frame of reference an …

Art, Public Spaces And Private Property Along The Streets In New Orleans, Renia Ehrenfeucht Dec 2013

Art, Public Spaces And Private Property Along The Streets In New Orleans, Renia Ehrenfeucht

Renia Ehrenfeucht

In this article, I investigate how and why a street art controversy that emerged in post- Katrina New Orleans was transformed from a dispute over property transgressions to a broader struggle over the meanings of art amidst the city’s devastated condition. The controversy began when a street art initiative by the New Orleans artist Rex Dingler invoked a backlash of anti-graffiti activism. In response, local artists began painting on the walls. When the locals were joined by artists from different cities, the discussion intensified about the merits of street art as well as commentary on and reflection of a city …

Over the past year, the University of Rhode Island (URI) has taken some steps towards shifting the default to Open Access for both faculty scholarship and student work. First and foremost, in March 2013, the URI Faculty Senate passed a Harvard-style Open Access mandate. And in February 2013, the Library and the Graduate School began making electronic dissertations and theses openly available through URI’s institutional repository. In this presentation, we will define Open Access policies and discuss why they are important. We will give an overview of our experiences with Open Access advocacy, implementation of policies, and next steps.

Bad Moon Rising: Lycanthropy And Liminality In Cervantes's “El Coloquio De Los Perros”, Bruce Burningham Dec 2013

Bad Moon Rising: Lycanthropy And Liminality In Cervantes's “El Coloquio De Los Perros”, Bruce Burningham

3 Digital Curation

Among the three possible explanations for Cipión and Berganza's sudden and unexpected power of speech in Cervantes's “El coloquio de los perros” is the suggestion that these two characters are actually the progeny of a witch and that they have been cursed to live as dogs until such time as they revert to their human form. Through an examination of the history of lycanthropy and cynocephaly in European mythology, this essay traces the lycanthropic foundations of “El casamiento engañoso” and “El coloquio de los perros” and explores Cervantes's talking dogs as a metaphor for hybridity, liminality, and contamination within the …

China-Cambodia-Us Nexus, Sophal Ear Dec 2013

China-Cambodia-Us Nexus, Sophal Ear

Sophal Ear

Washington’s strategic pivot to Asia and Beijing’s pursuit of new strategic and security interests in the region have led to increasing tensions between the two powers. US leaders have stressed that their increased interest in Asia is driven by a desire to benefit from the thriving regional economies, as well as to play the leading role in maintaining peace and stability in the region. However, Beijing is particularly concerned about US efforts to consolidate its alliances and deepen security partnerships with a number of regional states. Given the centrality of the two powers to the strategic stability and economic development …

Institute of Museum and Library Services, Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Program Grant, continuing education, 2014-2016.
Academic and research librarians and their institutions derive well-established benefits from librarians conducting research: progress toward gaining promotion, tenure, and higher salaries; advancement in the profession and recognition; receptivity to change; increased skill in managing complex library operations through systematic study; and better service to and empathy with faculty researchers. We know, however, that these librarians may not be well positioned to conduct research, resulting from any number of barriers. We aim to remove some of the noted barriers (reported lack of time to …

Zinc Supplementation Sustained Normative Neurodevelopment In A Randomized, Controlled Trial Of Peruvian Infants Aged 6–18 Months, Kathleen Kannass Dec 2013

Zinc Supplementation Sustained Normative Neurodevelopment In A Randomized, Controlled Trial Of Peruvian Infants Aged 6–18 Months, Kathleen Kannass

Kathleen Kannass

A double-blind, randomized clinical trial was conducted to determine the effects of prevention of zinc deficiency on cognitive and sensorimotor development during infancy. At 6 mo of age, infants were randomly assigned to be administered a daily liquid supplement containing 10 mg/d of zinc (zinc sulfate), 10 mg/d of iron (ferrous sulfate), and 0.5 mg/d of copper (copper oxide), or an identical daily liquid supplement containing only 10 mg/d of iron and 0.5 mg/d of copper. Various controls were implemented to ensure adherence to the supplement protocol. A battery of developmental assessments was administered from 6 to 18 mo of …
