Black Women As Scholars And Social Agents: Standing In The Gap, Sherri Wallace, Sharon Moore, Carla Curtis Dec 2013

Black Women As Scholars And Social Agents: Standing In The Gap, Sherri Wallace, Sharon Moore, Carla Curtis

Sherri L. Wallace

The number of Black women in the academy is small. Further, that number decreases as the academic and administrative ranks increase. Yet, these scholars and social agents play roles vital to education. This reflective essay describes the experiences of three Black female scholars at Predominately White Institutions. Using personal narratives as an analytical framework, the authors discuss how they use their research, teaching, community service, and mentoring opportunities to affect social change. This autoethnographical work seeks to heighten awareness of those who use their profession, despite the systemic barriers as a catalyst for transformation and emancipation both within and outside …

Material Agency In The Urban Material Culture Initiative, Robert Rotenberg Dec 2013

Material Agency In The Urban Material Culture Initiative, Robert Rotenberg

Robert Rotenberg

This contribution to the discussion of collecting contemporary objects reviews the implications of taking seriously how and what objects communicate, especially how we can identify the ways messages are coded in the forms of familiar objects. Of special interest are the conceptual tools that are available to differentiate these messages when objects are arranged in assemblages, including emergent implicit messages, the messages implicit in sets of objects. I advocate an approach to collecting in museums based on the tactics people use to create these assemblages at home. What theorizing about material agency offers to our collection program is a focus …

Towards General Models Of Effective Science Inquiry In Virtual Performance Assessments, Ryan Baker, Jody Clarke-Midura, J. Ocumpaugh Dec 2013

Towards General Models Of Effective Science Inquiry In Virtual Performance Assessments, Ryan Baker, Jody Clarke-Midura, J. Ocumpaugh

Ryan S.J.d. Baker

Recent interest in online assessment of scientific inquiry has led to several new online systems that attempt to assess these skills, but producing models that detect when students are successfully practicing these skills can be challenging. In this paper, we study the models that assess student inquiry in an immersive virtual environment, where a student navigates an avatar around a world, speaking to in-game characters, collecting samples, and conducting scientific tests with those samples in the virtual laboratory. To this goal, we leverage log file data from nearly two thousand middle-school students using Virtual Performance Assessment (VPA), a software system …

Measuring The Community In Online Classes, Beth Rubin, Ron Fernandes Dec 2013

Measuring The Community In Online Classes, Beth Rubin, Ron Fernandes

Beth Rubin

The paper proposes both theoretical and empirical approaches to differentiate the Community of Inquiry (CoI) in online classes at individual and group levels. Following the example of research on organizational climate, it assesses the strength of shared perceptions of teaching presence, social presence and cognitive presence. The paper develops a theory of composition that relates isomorphic constructs of these presences at the individual and the class levels. Hypotheses are made about the agreement among students on the survey that is used to measure individual perceptions of the three presences of the CoI. These are tested through a set of statistics …

Governance And Transparency At Pepfar, Matthew Kavanagh, Brook Baker Dec 2013

Governance And Transparency At Pepfar, Matthew Kavanagh, Brook Baker

Matthew M. Kavanagh

The US President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) has been one of the most effective foreign aid programmes in history. It reached 6·7 million people with antiretroviral therapy in 2013, and has also strengthened country health systems, provided billions of dollars in aid to biomedical and behavioural prevention programmes, and helped to drive declines in morbidity and mortality in many countries in sub-Saharan Africa. PEPFAR began as an emergency response, after relative inaction by wealthy nations, and rapidly built disease-response capacity by funding non-governmental organisations.

Conceptual Framework For Using Gis In Building Community Capital Towards Sustainability, Sungsoon Hwang Dec 2013

Conceptual Framework For Using Gis In Building Community Capital Towards Sustainability, Sungsoon Hwang

Sungsoon Hwang

Sustainability—balancing fundamental human needs with ecological resilience—has been embraced as an overarching policy goal. And communities have been called to participate in the process of attaining that ideal. Community-based organizations (CBOs) can benefit from using GIS in building community assets and developing sustainability initiatives. However, GIS, has not been used widely for these purposes in CBOs yet. In this chapter, I illustrate how geographic information (such as maps) can be useful in community development drawing from community GIS projects, and explain how theories of sustainability and spatial thinking can be utilized in community-based efforts towards sustainability. CBOs can monitor and …

The Role Of Supervisors In The Determination Of Wages And Wage Gaps, Joshua Pitts, Sandra Orozco-Aleman, Jon Rezek Dec 2013

The Role Of Supervisors In The Determination Of Wages And Wage Gaps, Joshua Pitts, Sandra Orozco-Aleman, Jon Rezek

Joshua Pitts

This article considers labour market discrimination by supervisors as a potential contributor to racial and gender wage gaps. Empirical analysis reveals evidence that all workers, except Hispanic males, earn significantly higher hourly wages when working for a supervisor of the same race and sex as themselves. Furthermore, the results suggest that sex has a larger impact on wages than race for workers with white supervisors, while race has a larger impact on wages than sex for workers with minority supervisors. Based on past research, we theorize that the degree of labour discrimination workers face may also be dependent upon the …

Being Black Academic Mothers, Angela Lewis, Sherri Wallace, Clarissa Peterson Dec 2013

Being Black Academic Mothers, Angela Lewis, Sherri Wallace, Clarissa Peterson

Sherri L. Wallace

A career in academe provides professors with flexibility and autonomy.  Despite this, academic mothers face challenges in balancing work and family.  Black academic mothers may face additional demands including battling hidden bias and misconceptions.  This essay utilizes autoethnography to demonstrate how Black academic mothers balance their careers and motherhood.  Personal narratives are used to identify emergent themes that serve as a basis to provide recommendations for understanding and improving working conditions for mothers in academe.

Emotional Intelligence In The Martial Arts: Predictor Of Success, Chris Moser, Cherri Hampton-Farmer, Daniel Baczkowski, Matthew Moser

Matthew Moser

An emerging body of research suggests social and emotional abilities play an important role in predicting personal and professional success. Although analytical and technical skills may serve as a minimum requirement for success, it is emotional intelligence (EI) that is often the attribute that distinguishes outstanding performers from average ones. Because scant research exists measuring EI levels among black belt holders and to address the gap in literature, this study  identifies EI competencies that are predictors of success for individuals in this group. Just as certain competencies and attributes contribute to  success and effectiveness in life and in the workplace, …

Making Asylum Seeker Policy In Australia And Indonesia: A Flawed Process?, Daniel Baldino, Martin Drum, Mangadar Situmorang

Martin Drum

Few policies have attracted more focus and attention in Australia than theCommonwealth Government’s approach to asylum seekers. It is not the purpose ofthis paper to reiterate such commentary, but rather to explore the compare theprocess of decision-making between Australia and Indonesia. In the Australian context, policy approaches to asylum seekers have generally beenmade at ministerial and cabinet level, with minimal input from actors external to
government. This approach would appear consistent with the theory of authoritative

choice, which can be described as
“a classical view of policy making that relies on an assumptions that policy is made byrational choices exercised …

Policy Should Focus On Better Contraception, Not More Marriage., Rebecca A. Maynard

REBECCA A MAYNARD

More children are at risk of getting stuck in or near poverty, due to current trends in family formation. In 2012, more than 4 in 10 children were born to unmarried women—up from just over 3 in 10 in 2000, and from fewer than 2 in 10 in 1980. This blog discusses the policy concerns and recommends strategies for improving outcomes.

A Class Explores: Dangerousness And Mental Illness, Leeann Bartolini Dec 2013

A Class Explores: Dangerousness And Mental Illness, Leeann Bartolini

LeeAnn Bartolini

Each year in our Abnormal Psychology course at Dominican University of California students collectively explore a topic about mental illness that receives media attention. Last year we looked at the problem of the homeless mentally ill and posted our study online. The focus in the 2014/2015 academic year is: Dangerousness and Mental Illness. What is meant by dangerousness? In California we distinguish between danger to self and danger to others when we discuss civil commitment guidelines. Our study, presented in this blog, and written by students, will focus on danger to others and the link between mental illness and crime. …

The Homeless Mentally Ill: A Class Explores, Leeann Bartolini

LeeAnn Bartolini

This blog is created to foster faculty and student engagement focusing on the topic of the homeless mentally ill. Much research, scholarship, discussion, and money has been and is currently devoted to solving this problem. In the Spring of 2014, students in Dr. Bartolini’s Abnormal Psychology course (yes, she’d rather it be called the Psychology of Mental Illness) will be summarizing past research from the last four decades on this topic and examining various city based attempted solutions

Girls And Media; Dreams And Realities, Kara Chan Dec 2013

Girls And Media; Dreams And Realities, Kara Chan

Professor Kara Chan

The role of media in any society is vital and is closely related to brands and consumption especially in a vibrant 21st century Asian city. Hong Kong with its free-market economy and urban bustle is a perfect place to observe this in action. But Hong Kong is also deeply conservative in many ways especially with regard to family values, and the presence of overtly sexualized images in advertising sits uncomfortably with the values of modesty and traditional sexual mores that exist there. Young girls are also discovering their identities like any other groups of girls in the world, and often …

Framing Farming: Communication Strategies For Animal Rights, Carrie P. Freeman Dec 2013

Framing Farming: Communication Strategies For Animal Rights, Carrie P. Freeman

Carrie P. Freeman

To what extent should animal rights activists promote animal rights when attempting to persuade meat-lovers to stop eating animals? Contributing to a classic social movement framing debate, Freeman examines the animal rights movement’s struggles over whether to construct farming campaign messages based more on utility (emphasizing animal welfare, reform and reduction, and human self-interest) or ideology (emphasizing animal rights and abolition). Freeman prioritizes the latter, “ideological authenticity,” to promote a needed transformation in worldviews and human animal identity, not just behaviors. This would mean framing “go veg” messages not only around compassion, but also around principles of ecology, liberty, and …

Economics Of Federalism, Daniel L. Rubinfeld, Robert P. Inman Dec 2013

Economics Of Federalism, Daniel L. Rubinfeld, Robert P. Inman

Daniel L. Rubinfeld

This article provides an overview of the political economy of federalism. The core of the article focuses on the classic Tiebout framework and its support for a decentralized federal system. However, the article goes beyond the Tiebout world in suggesting a framework that is expanded to take into account bargaining among governmental units. The article also describes political models of legislative and executive branch decision making that suggest the potential benefits and costs associated with centralized government. Ultimately, the choice of an “optimal” level of decentralization depends on the relative importance one places upon economic efficiency and the potentially competing …
