A Volatility-Based Theory Of Fiscal Union Desirability, Jaime Luque, Massimo Morelli, José Tavares Dec 2013

A Volatility-Based Theory Of Fiscal Union Desirability, Jaime Luque, Massimo Morelli, José Tavares

Jaime P. Luque

Heterogeneous countries may rationally choose to form a currency union first, and a fiscal union later. We find, and illustrate empirically for the EMU countries, reasonable volatility conditions under which this sequencing in the deepening process is indeed rationalizable. Changes in the distribution of expected income shocks require a reassignment of political weights to restore unanimous support for an added fiscal dimension. The bargaining space depends on countries' relative income, size, and cross correlation of shocks.

Wages, Local Amenities And The Rise Of The Multi-Skilled City, Jaime Luque Dec 2013

Wages, Local Amenities And The Rise Of The Multi-Skilled City, Jaime Luque

Jaime P. Luque

This paper examines a set of necessary and sufficient conditions under which equilibrium involves mixing multiple types of workers in cities. Multi-skilled cities emerge if workers gain more from labor complementarities than they lose if they cannot consume their most preferred local amenities. A review of the different approaches to the presence of equilibrium in local public good economies is also provided.

Did The Euro Change The Effect Of Fundamentals On Growth And Uncertainty?, Jaime Luque, Abderrahim Taamouti Dec 2013

Did The Euro Change The Effect Of Fundamentals On Growth And Uncertainty?, Jaime Luque, Abderrahim Taamouti

Jaime P. Luque

We present empirical evidence on whether the introduction of the euro has changed the effect of economic fundamentals on the growth rates of euro countries' GDPpc and GDPpc volatility. We find that there is a statistically significant structural break in the impact of increments in government debt on both economic growth and uncertainty. In particular, after adoption of the euro increments in government debt decreased growth and increased uncertainty. These results are robust to a battery of checks, including exclusion of the recent financial crisis period, comparison with non-euro European countries, and controlling for different debt/GDP ratios.

Preserving Respectability Or Blatant Disrespect: A Critical Discourse Analysis Of The Morehouse College Appropriate Attire Policy And Implicatins For Intersectional Approaches To Examining Campus Policies, Lori D. Patton Davis Dec 2013

Preserving Respectability Or Blatant Disrespect: A Critical Discourse Analysis Of The Morehouse College Appropriate Attire Policy And Implicatins For Intersectional Approaches To Examining Campus Policies, Lori D. Patton Davis

Lori Patton Davis

In this paper, I conduct a critical discourse analysis of the Morehouse College Appropriate Attire Policy and discuss how issues of race, gender, and sexuality converge to reveal both overt and hidden meanings embedded in the policy. I also consider how power is used towards “other” black college men who neither fit neatly into prescribed gender norms, nor foster representations of “good” black men. I situate this critical policy analysis in the context of two ideas: bipolar masculinity and the politics of respectability, and offer implications for the use of intersectional frames in scholarship and research on men and institutional …

Importance Of School Library Programs, Cynthia Strong Dec 2013

Importance Of School Library Programs, Cynthia Strong

Cynthia Strong

Within the discipline of library science, over 20 research studies have been done in the United States attesting to how quality school library programs contribute to improved academic achievement. On the other hand, in the fields of education, school counseling, administration, and school leadership, and so on, there is a dearth of scholarship and recognition of the positive impact librarians and library media program have on student success. This conceptual paper first presents an overview of the empirical research on school library programs and the positive impact they have on the academic achievement of students in the United States. Second, …

Young Children’S Difficulty With Indirect Speech Acts: Implications For Questioning Child Witnesses, Angela D. Evans, Stacia Stolzenberg, Kang Lee, Thomas D. Lyon Dec 2013

Young Children’S Difficulty With Indirect Speech Acts: Implications For Questioning Child Witnesses, Angela D. Evans, Stacia Stolzenberg, Kang Lee, Thomas D. Lyon

Thomas D. Lyon

Prior research suggests that infelicitous choice of questions can significantly underestimate children’s actual abilities, independently of suggestiveness. One possibly difficult question type is indirect speech acts such as “Do you know…” questions (DYK, e.g., “Do you know where it happened?”). These questions directly ask if respondents know, while indirectly asking what respondents know. If respondents answer “yes,” but fail to elaborate, they are either ignoring or failing to recognize the indirect question (known as pragmatic failure). Two studies examined the effect of indirect speech acts on maltreated and non-maltreated 2- to 7-year-olds’ post-event interview responses. Children were read a story …

Differences In Demotivation Between Chinese And Korean English Teachers: A Mixed Methods Study, Tae-Young Kim, Yoon-Kyoung Kim, Qian-Mei Zhang

Dr. Tae-Young Kim (김태영, 金兌英)

This mixed methods study investigates the differences in demotivation between Chinese and Korean English teachers. A questionnaire on demotivation was conducted on 58 Chinese and 94 Korean in-service teachers in order to find out the dominant factors in teacher demotivation. Follow-up interviews with teachers were conducted in order to explore the reasons as to why teachers found the salient factors to be demotivating. The results indicated that the number of students per English classroom was the detrimental factor for both Chinese and Korean teachers. Moreover, the only factor that Chinese teachers perceived to be more demotivating than Korean teachers was …

‘Yes, We Can’: The Social Life Of A Political Slogan, Adam Hodges Dec 2013

‘Yes, We Can’: The Social Life Of A Political Slogan, Adam Hodges

Adam Hodges

Political campaigns are often associated with short, catchy slogans, such as the “yes, we can” catchphrase of the Obama campaign in 2008. Slogans such as these do important political work by reminding the public about the candidate as well as the ideas the candidate represents. Even in situations where detailed rehearsals of the candidate’s positions on issues are not possible, slogans index and reinforce those ideas in the minds of voters. Drawing on the Bakhtinian inspired idea of intertextuality, this chapter illustrates the way slogans enter into social circulation as intertextual series and gain traction in American public discourse. The …

Communicating Climate Change: Are Stories Better Than ‘Just The Facts?’, Michael D. Jones Dr. Dec 2013

Communicating Climate Change: Are Stories Better Than ‘Just The Facts?’, Michael D. Jones Dr.

Michael D. Jones

Postpositive policy scholarship has long asserted the importance of narratives—or stories—in shaping public policy through public opinion. In part, the Narrative Policy Framework (NPF) was developed to empirically test this assertion. To assess the relationship between policy narratives and public opinion, NPF posits several causal mechanisms including narrative transportation. Narrative transportation is a measure used to assess the extent to which individuals exposed to a story are “transported” into that story. NPF hypothesizes that as narrative transportation increases the reader of the story will (i) have more positive affect for characters within the story; and (ii) will find the story …

Jacobus J. "Jaap" Vos

The Greenbelt survey was administered at four different locations on the greenbelt on Tuesday, September 17, and Saturday, September 21, 2013. There were a little over 1000 usable surveys and we also received detailed information about the amount of people on the Greenbelt from a traffic count that was performed by the Ada County Highway District (ACHD). The general results are very similar from last year. Users are unanimously happy about the Greenbelt and see the Greenbelt as an important asset for the community. People feel safe and almost 75 percent of the people that were surveyed use the Greenbelt …

Return On Investment: New Strategies For Marketing Digital Resources To Academic Faculty, Elyse L. Profera, Michael A. Arthur, Barbara Tierney Dec 2013

Return On Investment: New Strategies For Marketing Digital Resources To Academic Faculty, Elyse L. Profera, Michael A. Arthur, Barbara Tierney

Barbara Tierney

Game-changing strategies for marketing digital resources to end-users are crucial for establishing return on investment in this period of reduced library collection budgets and challenging resource prices.  When expensive digital resources are purchased by academic libraries, there needs to be a marketing plan in place for getting these resources into the hands of end-users as quickly as possible.

One strategy for success is a marketing collaboration between the publisher and the academic library.  This panel program will focus on the success achieved at the University of Central Florida Libraries where such a collaboration included experts from Taylor & Francis working …

Comparing Uses Of The Strategic Defense (Fabian Strategy) By General Washington (1776-78) And Russian Generals (1904-05), Samuel W. Bettwy Dec 2013

Comparing Uses Of The Strategic Defense (Fabian Strategy) By General Washington (1776-78) And Russian Generals (1904-05), Samuel W. Bettwy

Samuel W Bettwy

The Fabian strategy, also known as strategic defense, is a military strategy in which a weaker force avoids decisive battles with the enemy and creates delay in a war of attrition until the right moment arrives to deliver a decisive blow. General George Washington and his Continental Army, supplemented by the militia, employed this strategy successfully against the British Army during the War for American Independence. The Russian generals did not, however, employ a successful strategic defense against Japanese expeditionary forces in the Russo-Japanese War. To understand why, this paper considers the elements of the Fabian strategy and compares how …

Coping With Smart Phone 'Distractions' In A College Classroom, Kehbuma Langmia Dec 2013

Coping With Smart Phone 'Distractions' In A College Classroom, Kehbuma Langmia

Kehbuma Langmia

The influx of smart phones in most college classroom is impacting instruction in a way that was never anticipated. Thus, a survey of full-time faculty members at a local university in the United States was conducted to test three hypotheses, followed by a one-on-one interview with a random sample of the same respondents to ascertain the effect of smart phones in the classroom. Results showed conflicting approaches by faculty on how to handle the situation. While some faculty members use smart phones for pedagogic reasons and experience positive results, most of them apply strict classroom phone policy with little success. …

Successful Scholarly Communication At A Small University: Integration Of Education, Services, And An Institutional Repository At Valparaiso University, Jonathan Bull, Bradford Lee Eden Dec 2013

Successful Scholarly Communication At A Small University: Integration Of Education, Services, And An Institutional Repository At Valparaiso University, Jonathan Bull, Bradford Lee Eden

Jonathan Bull

Beginning in 2011, the Christopher Center Library Services (CCLS) unit at Valparaiso University (VU) started implementing new scholarly communication services utilizing two different components: 1. the education and training of library staff in scholarly communication trends and issues; and 2. the implementation of ValpoScholar, VU’s institutional repository (IR) and its associated services. These components allowed for new skills to be developed, new services to be delivered and the library’s digital collections to grow with minimal impact to existing services. This model may provide a framework for other small institutions interested in adding scholarly communication services to their existing library services.

The Cobden-Chevalier Effect: Evaluating The Causal Effect Of The Most Favoured Nation Clause In Presence Of Network Interdependence, Luca De Benedictis, Silvia Nenci Dec 2013

The Cobden-Chevalier Effect: Evaluating The Causal Effect Of The Most Favoured Nation Clause In Presence Of Network Interdependence, Luca De Benedictis, Silvia Nenci

Luca De Benedictis

The purpose of this work is to evaluate the causal effect of the Network of the Cobden-Chevalier Treaties including the Most Favoured Nation (MFN) clause on trade flows of countries in the second half of the 19th century. This paper contributes to the literature on the topic in several ways. First, it applies up-to-date quantitative methods (i.e., nonparametric matching technique) to the study of historical phenomena. These methods permit to estimate the average MFN effect (the ``treatment") on the treated group of countries in terms of bilateral trade flows (the ``outcome"), rebalancing the control group without imposing any functional relationship …

Starting From Scratch: Meaningful Integration Of Information Literacy Through Collaborative Course And Assignment Design, Chris Sweet, Meghan Burke Dec 2013

Starting From Scratch: Meaningful Integration Of Information Literacy Through Collaborative Course And Assignment Design, Chris Sweet, Meghan Burke

Meghan A. Burke

Instruction librarians are all too familiar with well-intentioned research papers and assignments that reduce information literacy to a simplistic checklist (must include 4 peer-reviewed sources) or set of skills (use interlibrary loan, cite materials properly). Librarians and classroom faculty should recognize that information literacy cannot just be magically imparted to students through a single assignment or library instruction session. Becoming information literate requires repeated practice in a variety of contexts. How often have you wished for the opportunity to just sit down with a faculty member and start from scratch when designing an assignment –or even better- an entire course? …

The Effect Of Marginalization On The Healthy Aging Of Lgbtq Older Adults, Jeanne E. Sokolec, Michael P. Dentato Dec 2013

The Effect Of Marginalization On The Healthy Aging Of Lgbtq Older Adults, Jeanne E. Sokolec, Michael P. Dentato

Michael P. Dentato

The intersection of sexual orientation, gender identity/expression, healthy aging, and community resources can be framed as a human rights issue that affects the psychological well-being of people within the aging lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) population. Depending on the country and/or culture in which one resides, being an older adult can be celebrated or stereotyped as chronically ill, useless, or uninterested, as well as by other demeaning characteristics. Members of the LGBTQ community may have arrived at stages of older adulthood after experiencing life-long marginalization within a heteronormative environment, geographical location and/or social groups throughout their development. Thus, …
