Using Summon To Teach Historical Primary Sources: The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly, Carol A. Singer, Stephen M. Charter Nov 2014

Using Summon To Teach Historical Primary Sources: The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly, Carol A. Singer, Stephen M. Charter

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2012

The use of a discovery layer transforms the process of identifying and accessing library resources, including archival, published, and virtual historical primary sources. The content of a discovery layer database is not identical with the sum of the online catalog plus the various databases to which the library subscribes. Some kinds of historical primary sources, or their finding aids, may not be included. Even when virtual resources are included in the discovery layer database, reliable access to full text may not be easily available. However, some virtual resources which were not previously accessible through library databases may now be easily …

Traditional Ecological Knowledge: A Model For Modern Fire Management?, Gail Wells Nov 2014

Traditional Ecological Knowledge: A Model For Modern Fire Management?, Gail Wells

Joint Fire Science Program Digests

For many thousands of years, aboriginal peoples worldwide used fire to manage landscapes. In North America, the frequency and extent of fire (both human caused and natural) were much reduced after European colonization. Fire exclusion became the policy in the United States for most of the 20th century as the country became more settled and industrialized. Past fire exclusion has helped produce landscapes that are highly susceptible to uncharacteristically severe wildfire. An urgent challenge for land managers today is to reduce fire risk through several means, including prescribed burning, without harm to culturally significant resources or human communities. The Joint …

The Effect Of Discovery Systems On Online Journal Usage: A Longitudinal Study, Michael Levine-Clark, John Mcdonald, Jason S. Price Nov 2014

The Effect Of Discovery Systems On Online Journal Usage: A Longitudinal Study, Michael Levine-Clark, John Mcdonald, Jason S. Price

University Libraries: Faculty Scholarship

Many academic libraries are implementing discovery services as a way of giving their users a single comprehensive search option for all library resources. These tools are designed to change the research experience, yet very few studies have investigated the impact of discovery service implementation. This study examines one aspect of that impact by asking whether usage of publisher-hosted journal content changes after implementation of a discovery tool. Libraries that have begun using the four major discovery services have seen an increase in usage of this content, suggesting that for this particular type of material, discovery services have a positive impact …

Male Ballet Dancers And Their Performances Of Heteromasculinity, Trenton M. Haltom, Meredith G. F. Worthen Nov 2014

Male Ballet Dancers And Their Performances Of Heteromasculinity, Trenton M. Haltom, Meredith G. F. Worthen

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Although previous research has investigated men in feminized sports, we took a different approach in this study and examined men in ballet. Because ballet is one of the most highly gender-codified sports, male ballet dancers must negotiate their identities as men while performing a dance form that is highly stigmatized as effeminate. We investigated how five self-identified heterosexual male college dance majors perceive and perform heteromasculinity within male ballet culture using qualitative data gathered from structured interviews. Results provide three unique contributions to the literature. First, we found that these men develop and contextualize their heteromasculinity in the context of …

Demographic, Economic And Social Transformations In The Colombian-Origin Population Of The New York City Metropolitan Area, 1990 - 2010, Laird Bergad

Center for Latin American, Caribbean, and Latino Studies

Introduction: This study examines demographic and socioeconomic aspects of the Colombian-origin population of the New York City area between 1990 and 2010.

Methods: Data on Latinos and other racial/ethnic groups were obtained from the U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey, reorganized for public use by the Minnesota Population Center, University of Minnesota, IPUMSusa. Cases in the dataset were weighted and analyzed to produce population estimates.

Results: The demographic, social, and economic indicators considered in this report were influenced by decline of immigration from Colombia to the region after 2000. Like most immigrant groups before them Colombians are ambitious, hard workers, …

Improved Randomization Tests For A Class Of Single-Case Intervention Designs, Joel R. Levin, John M. Ferron, Boris S. Gafurov

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Forty years ago, Eugene Edgington developed a single-case AB intervention design-and-analysis procedure based on a random determination of the point at which the B phase would start. In the present simulation studies encompassing a variety of AB-type contexts, it is demonstrated that by also randomizing the order in which the A and B phases are administered, a researcher can markedly increase the procedure’s statistical power.

Gumbel-Weibull Distribution: Properties And Applications, Raid Al-Aqtash, Carl Lee, Felix Famoye Nov 2014

Gumbel-Weibull Distribution: Properties And Applications, Raid Al-Aqtash, Carl Lee, Felix Famoye

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Some properties of the Gumbel-Weibull distribution including the mean deviations and modes are studied. A detailed discussion of regions of unimodality and bimodality is given. The method of maximum likelihood is proposed for estimating the distribution parameters and a simulation is conducted to study the performance of the method. Three tests are given for testing the significance of a distribution parameter. The applications of Gumbel-Weibull distribution are emphasized. Five data sets are used to illustrate the flexibility of the distribution in fitting unimodal and bimodal data sets.

Estimation Of Multi Component Systems Reliability In Stress-Strength Models, Adil H. Khan, T R. Jan Nov 2014

Estimation Of Multi Component Systems Reliability In Stress-Strength Models, Adil H. Khan, T R. Jan

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

In a system with standby redundancy, there are a number of components only one of which works at a time and the other remain as standbys. When an impact of stress exceeds the strength of the active component, for the first time, it fails and another from standbys, if there is any, is activated and faces the impact of stresses, not necessarily identical as faced by the preceding component and the system fails when all the components have failed. Sriwastav and Kakaty (1981) assumed that the components stress-strengths are similarly distributed. However, in general the stress distributions will …

The Information Criterion, Masume Ghahramani Nov 2014

The Information Criterion, Masume Ghahramani

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

The Akaike information criterion, AIC, is widely used for model selection. Using the AIC as the estimator of asymptotic unbias for the second term Kullbake-Leibler risk considers the divergence between the true model and offered models. However, it is an inconsistent estimator. A proposed approach the problem is the use of A'IC, a consistently offered information criterion. Model selection of classic and linear models are considered by a Monte Carlo simulation.

Fitting Stereotype Logistic Regression Models For Ordinal Response Variables In Educational Research (Stata), Xing Liu Nov 2014

Fitting Stereotype Logistic Regression Models For Ordinal Response Variables In Educational Research (Stata), Xing Liu

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

The stereotype logistic (SL) model is an alternative to the proportional odds (PO) model for ordinal response variables when the proportional odds assumption is violated. This model seems to be underutilized. One major reason is the constraint of current statistical software packages. Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) cannot perform the SL regression analysis, and SAS does not have the procedure developed to directly estimate the model. The purpose of this article was to illustrate the stereotype logistic (SL) regression model, and apply it to estimate mathematics proficiency level of high school students using Stata. In addition, it compared …

Monkey-Based Research On Human Disease: The Implications Of Genetic Differences, Jarrod Bailey Nov 2014

Monkey-Based Research On Human Disease: The Implications Of Genetic Differences, Jarrod Bailey

Laboratory Experiments Collection

Assertions that the use of monkeys to investigate human diseases is valid scientifically are frequently based on a reported 90–93% genetic similarity between the species. Critical analyses of the relevance of monkey studies to human biology, however, indicate that this genetic similarity does not result in sufficient physiological similarity for monkeys to constitute good models for research, and that monkey data do not translate well to progress in clinical practice for humans. Salient examples include the failure of new drugs in clinical trials, the highly different infectivity and pathology of SIV/HIV, and poor extrapolation of research on Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s …

Rugby's Rise In The United States: The Impact Of Social Media On An Emerging Sport, Benjamin James Kocher

Theses and Dissertations

In this study, the grounded theory approach was used to conduct a qualitative study about the effects the media has on rugby players in the United States. This study involved in-depth interviews with American-born-and-raised rugby players from the top rugby colleges and universities in the United States. These interviews helped identify the role played by traditional and social media in encouraging new players to begin playing the sport of rugby. Results showed that traditional media did not play a large role in bringing out new players in the United States. However newer, social media played a much larger role. New …

The Theory Of Agricultural Cooperatives: A Neoclassical Primer, Jeffrey S. Royer

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

This monograph provides an introduction to the neoclassical theory of agricultural cooperatives. The neoclassical theory of cooperatives has been useful for generating insights into the behavior of cooperatives in various market structures, helping cooperatives develop business strategies consistent with their objectives, and informing public policy decisions concerning cooperatives. This monograph describes the application of neoclassical theory to farm supply and marketing cooperatives within various market structures in both the short and long run. Topics covered include the stability of cooperative price and output solutions, strategies for reducing the cost of producing a farm input sold to members and for raising …

Adolescent Bisphenol-A Exposure Decreases Dendritic Spine Density: Role Of Sex And Age, Rachel E. Bowman, Victoria N. Luine, Hameda Khandaker, Joseph J. Villafane, Maya Frankfurt

Psychology Faculty Publications

Bisphenol-A (BPA), a common environmental endocrine disruptor, modulates estrogenic, androgenic, and anti-androgenic effects throughout the lifespan. We recently showed that low dose BPA exposure during adolescence increases anxiety and impairs spatial memory independent of sex. In the current study, six week old Sprague Dawley rats (n=24 males, n=24 females) received daily subcutaneous injections (40 µg/kg bodyweight) of BPA or vehicle for one week. Serum corticosterone levels in response to a 1 h restraint stress and spine density were examined at age 7 (cohort 1) and 11 (cohort 2) weeks. Adolescent BPA exposure did not alter stress dependent corticosterone responses but …

"Reflecting An Era", Kris Runberg Smith

The Confluence (2009-2020)

The stained glass windows of St. Mark's Episcopal Church became a controversy among St. Louisans in the 1930s with their politically charged depictions, which were the brainchild of one man, Bishop William Scarlett. Windows depicting all -too-familiar scenes are paralleled with contemporary ones, but they may not be the ones you would expect.

Restoration Of Bison (Bison Bison) To Agate Fossil Beds National Monument, A Feasibility Study, Daniel S. Licht

United States National Park Service: Publications

Executive Summary

Agate Fossil Beds National Monument is a 3,057-acre park located in western Nebraska. The unit is comprised of northern mixed-grass prairie vegetation, typical of the Northern Great Plains. Weather, fire, and grazing are generally considered to be the ecological drivers of prairie ecosystems and critical for prairie health. However, grazing has essentially been absent since the 1960s. In 2014, a Department of the Interior report explicitly listed the park as a high priority for bison restoration. This report evaluates the feasibility, management options, benefits, and challenges of restoring bison to Agate Fossil Beds National Monument.

A potential bison …
