Latent Factor Modeling Of Four Schizotypy Dimensions With Theory Of Mind And Empathy, Jeffrey S. Bedwell, Michael T. Compton, Florian G. Jentsch, Andrew E. Deptula, Sandra M. Goulding, Erin Tone Nov 2014

Latent Factor Modeling Of Four Schizotypy Dimensions With Theory Of Mind And Empathy, Jeffrey S. Bedwell, Michael T. Compton, Florian G. Jentsch, Andrew E. Deptula, Sandra M. Goulding, Erin Tone

Psychology Faculty Publications

Preliminary evidence suggests that theory of mind and empathy relate differentially to factors of schizotypy. The current study assessed 686 undergraduate students and used structural equation modeling to examine links between a four-factor model of schizotypy with performance on measures of theory of mind (Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test [MIE]) and empathy (Interpersonal Reactivity Index [IRI]). Schizotypy was assessed using three self-report measures which were simultaneously entered into the model. Results revealed that the Negative factor of schizotypy showed a negative relationship with the Empathy factor, which was primarily driven by the Empathic Concern subscale of the IRI …

Empathy As A “Risky Strength”: A Multilevel Examination Of Empathy And Risk For Internalizing Disorders, Erin Tone, Erin Tully Nov 2014

Empathy As A “Risky Strength”: A Multilevel Examination Of Empathy And Risk For Internalizing Disorders, Erin Tone, Erin Tully

Psychology Faculty Publications

Learning to respond to others' distress with well-regulated empathy is an important developmental task linked to positive health outcomes and moral achievements. However, this important interpersonal skill set may also confer risk for depression and anxiety when present at extreme levels and in combination with certain individual characteristics or within particular contexts. The purpose of this review is to describe an empirically grounded theoretical rationale for the hypothesis that empathic tendencies can be “risky strengths.” We propose a model in which typical development of affective and cognitive empathy can be influenced by complex interplay among intraindividual and interindividual moderators that …

Conover’S F Test As An Alternative To Durbin’S Test, Donald J. Best, John Charles Rayner

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Data consisting of ranks within blocks are considered for balanced incomplete block designs. An F test statistic from ANOVA is better approximated by an F distribution than the Durbin statistic is approximated by a chi-squared distribution. Indicative powers demonstrate that the F test is generally superior to Durbin’s test.

A Bivariate Distribution With Conditional Gamma And Its Multivariate Form, Sumen Sen, Rajan Lamichhane, Norou Diawara

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

A bivariate distribution whose marginal are gamma and beta prime distribution is introduced. The distribution is derived and the generation of such bivariate sample is shown. Extension of the results are given in the multivariate case under a joint independent component analysis method. Simulated applications are given and they show consistency of our approach. Estimation procedures for the bivariate case are provided.

Survival Estimation Using Bootstrap, Jackknife And K-Repeated Jackknife Methods, Johnson A. Adewara, Ugochukwu A. Mbata Nov 2014

Survival Estimation Using Bootstrap, Jackknife And K-Repeated Jackknife Methods, Johnson A. Adewara, Ugochukwu A. Mbata

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Three re-sampling techniques are used to estimate the survival probabilities from an exponential life-time distribution. The aim is to employ a technique to obtain a parameter estimate for a two-parameter exponential distribution. The re-sampling methods considered are: Bootstrap estimation method (BE), Jackknife estimation method (JE) and the k-repeated Jackknife estimation method (KJE). The methods were computed to obtain the mean square error (MSE) and mean percentage error (MPE) based on simulated data. The estimates of the two-parameter exponential distribution were substituted to estimate survival probabilities. Results show that the MSE value is reduced when the K–repeated jackknife method …

Reliability Estimates Of Generalized Poisson Distribution And Generalized Geometric Series Distribution, Adil H. Khan, T R. Jan Nov 2014

Reliability Estimates Of Generalized Poisson Distribution And Generalized Geometric Series Distribution, Adil H. Khan, T R. Jan

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Discrete distributions have played an important role in the reliability theory. In order to obtain Bayes estimators, researchers have adopted various conventional techniques. Generalizing the results of Maiti (1995), Chaturvadi and Tomer (2002) dealt with the problem of estimating P{X1, X2, …, XkY}, where random variables X and Y were assumed to follow a negative binomial distribution. Agit et al. obtained Bayesian estimates of the reliability functions and P{X1, X2, …, XkY} considering X and Y following binomial and Poisson …

Discrete Generalized Burr-Type Xii Distribution, B. A. Para, T. R. Jan Nov 2014

Discrete Generalized Burr-Type Xii Distribution, B. A. Para, T. R. Jan

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

A discrete analogue of generalized Burr-type XII distribution is introduced using a general approach of discretizing a continuous distribution. It may be worth exploring the possibility of developing a discrete version of the six parameter generalized Burr-type XII distribution for use in modeling a discrete data. This distribution is suggested as a suitable reliability model to fit a range of discrete lifetime data, as it is shown that hazard rate function can attain monotonic increasing (deceasing) shape for certain values of parameters. The equivalence of discrete generalized Burr-type XII (DGBD-XII) and continuous generalized Burr-type XII (GBD-XII) distributions has been established. …

Improving The Effectiveness Of Sanctions: A Checklist For The Eu, Anthonius W. De Vries, Clara Portela, Borja Guijarro-Usobiaga Nov 2014

Improving The Effectiveness Of Sanctions: A Checklist For The Eu, Anthonius W. De Vries, Clara Portela, Borja Guijarro-Usobiaga

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The increasingly frequent imposition of sanctions by the EU over the past decade has notbeen accompanied by a thorough pre-assessment and contingency planning stage, which hasled to the formulation of suboptimal sanctions regimes. This paper argues for establishing apre-assessment and contingency planning of sanctions, departing from the ‘ad hoc-ism’ ofcurrent decision-making on sanctions. To this end, it proposes the development of a‘checklist’ composed of key questions that need to be tackled to optimise the design ofsanctions. These questions include the identification of resources linked to the objectionablepolicies; the leverage of the EU; the costs to the EU; the legality of …

Library Planning And Budgeting: A Few Underappreciated Principles, Robert P. Holley

School of Information Sciences Faculty Research Publications

In this issue, Robert P. Holley, Professor of Library and Information Science at Wayne State University, looks at several important points about library planning and budgeting from his twenty five years’ experience as a library administrator. He chose these topics because they most often come as a surprise to students in his library management classes as well as his library colleagues. Understanding these few underappreciated and less than obvious management principles can help library managers grasp how libraries are different from for-profit organizations and how they can avoid some planning and budgeting traps.

Online Information Searching For Cardiovascular Diseases: An Analysis Of Mayo Clinic Search Query Logs, Ashutosh Sopan Jadhav, Amit P. Sheth, Jyotishman Pathak Nov 2014

Online Information Searching For Cardiovascular Diseases: An Analysis Of Mayo Clinic Search Query Logs, Ashutosh Sopan Jadhav, Amit P. Sheth, Jyotishman Pathak

Kno.e.sis Publications

Since the early 2000’s, Internet usage for health information searching has increased significantly. Studying search queries can help us to understand users “information need” and how do they formulate search queries (“expression of information need”). Although cardiovascular diseases (CVD) affect a large percentage of the population, few studies have investigated how and what users search for CVD. We address this knowledge gap in the community by analyzing a large corpus of 10 million CVD related search queries from MayoClinic.com. Using UMLS MetaMap and UMLS semantic types/concepts, we developed a rule-based approach to categorize the queries into 14 health categories. We …

A Peculiar Institution Indeed: The Humanity Of Indian Slave Owners, Brennan King, David Hertzel

SWOSU Journal of Undergraduate Research

This project was undertaken to better understand the rift between the understandings of how slaves were treated in Indian Territory versus how they were treated in the Deep South. In order to complete this project research was completed at the Oklahoma Historical Society, along with primary source resources from archival materials from the now defunct Works Progress Administration. The resulting conclusion of this project is that slaves owned by Native Americans in Indian Territory were generally treated with much more humanity than were slaves in the Deep South. The main implication realized was that it is important to have a …

Los Porcentajes Para Las Mujeres En Los Cargos Políticos: Las Leyes De Cuotas The Quotas For Women In Political Offices: The Quota Laws, Breanna Cary, Hector Garza

SWOSU Journal of Undergraduate Research

There is a growing number of women in politics today, but many countries still struggle to obtain a number of women in politics that accurately represents the female population. Political parties and government organizations are searching for ways to get more women involved in the politics of their country. One way that they are doing this is by setting a quota for the number of women required to be representatives in their political party, or even a number of women to be in their government. The research of this essay looks at the quotas in various parts of the world …

Teamwork: Crucible For Learning About Collaborative Leadership, Lisa Deangelis, Sherry H. Penney, Maureen A. Scully

Center for Collaborative Leadership Publications

In teaching leadership development we have developed and revised a model of teamwork and collaboration, which has yielded innovative and positive results. Our study draws on insights from more than 90 project teams, gathered over twelve years of a mid-career executive education program designed specifically to teach collaborative leadership. The teams work on a strategic dilemma with a business association or community organization, highlighting the civic engagement aspect of collaborative leadership. Teams devise their own operating procedures, refine (not simply manage) the project, create working relationships with multiple stakeholders, and present a deliverable within the nine-month span of the program. …

Fact Sheet: Cohort Differences In Parental Survival, Maximiliane E. Szinovacz Nov 2014

Fact Sheet: Cohort Differences In Parental Survival, Maximiliane E. Szinovacz

Gerontology Institute Publications

Increases in longevity and especially increased survival into very old age have implications not only for individuals’ own life course but also for that of their families. For example, if parents survive into very old age they will have more opportunities not only to become grandparents but also great-grandparents and to experience these family roles for a longer time period (the so-called “beanpole family”). From their adult children’s perspective, longer survival of parents also can mean that needs for companionship arising from one parent’s widow(er)hood will be postponed into their adult children’s later years, possibly after the child’s retirement. Similarly, …

Fact Sheet: Cohort Differences In Parents’ Illness And Nursing Home Use, Maximiliane E. Szinovacz

Gerontology Institute Publications

Surviving parents of the war baby and baby boom cohorts are now reaching very old age. Given their increased longevity and postponement of morbidity into very old age (see Fact Sheets on parental mortality and care needs), it is essential to estimate whether and to what extent these parents will require informal or formal care. Such care is typically most burdensome and costly if it involves long-lasting illness prior to death. Furthermore, Medicare and especially Medicaid expenditures will depend on whether or not these parents require nursing home care. To obtain some estimates of the prevalence of long-lasting illness and …

‘I Just Want A Job’: The Untold Stories Of Entrepreneurship, Lucia Garcia-Lorenzo, Lucia Sell-Trujillo, Paul Donnelly Nov 2014

‘I Just Want A Job’: The Untold Stories Of Entrepreneurship, Lucia Garcia-Lorenzo, Lucia Sell-Trujillo, Paul Donnelly

Books/Book Chapters

In this chapter, we explore the untold stories of Spanish and Irish necessity entrepreneurs to better understand the process of becoming an entrepreneur. Working with narratives, media articles, and policy documents, we illustrate how necessity entrepreneurs do not recognize themselves in the institutionalized entrepreneur narrative as empowered, creative and independent individuals. It is necessity, not opportunity that is pushing, not pulling, them to become entrepreneurial. The process is experienced as more fragmented than official narratives outline. In exposing these untold stories, the chapter expands our understanding of entrepreneurship, presenting a more nuanced view of both entrepreneurs and the entrepreneurial process.

Cooperative Movement Impacts On Poverty Eradication In Indonesia: 2007-2011 Archival Research, Horohito Norhatan

Master's Theses

Global leaders and institutions expend considerable time, effort, and resources to eradicate poverty in the world. In spite of these efforts, poverty persists worldwide as a trap into which millions of people continue to fall. The cooperative contribution towards poverty eradication has advanced in recent years. Cooperatives can potentially increase the economic well-being, fostering sustainable economic development at the community level (Yusuf & Ijaiya, 2009). The present study is based on a quantitative archival data analysis of cooperatives’ movement progress and poverty eradication efforts in Indonesia. The purpose of this research is to analyze the relationship between the Indonesian cooperative …

Tiers 1 & 2 Intervention: Before & After School Programs, Jenna Strawhun, Natalie Hoff, Lissy Kane, Kenneth Parnell, Reece L. Peterson Nov 2014

Tiers 1 & 2 Intervention: Before & After School Programs, Jenna Strawhun, Natalie Hoff, Lissy Kane, Kenneth Parnell, Reece L. Peterson

Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications

Conclusion

Millions of children and adolescents are unsupervised after school, often because their parents need to work during those hours. When these students are unsupervised, they are at risk for involvement in inappropraite inappropriate behaviors. After-school programs are a potential solution to this problem because they provide students with supervised, safe activities that may also increase academic or social skills. They also provide opportunities for academic tutoring, and social mentoring. Despite the fact that research has thus far been unable to categorically support the positive effects of afterschool programs, the general consensus is that the programs are helpful and have …

Determining Extraterritoriality, Franklin A. Gevurtz Nov 2014

Determining Extraterritoriality, Franklin A. Gevurtz

William & Mary Law Review

This Article addresses an underexplored but critical aspect of the presumption against extraterritoriality. The presumption against extraterritoriality—which the United States Supreme Court has increasingly invoked in recent years—calls for courts to presume that Congress does not intend U.S. statutes to govern events outside the United States. The most difficult issue presented by the presumption arises when relevant events occur both inside and outside the United States, as in the classic example, if a shooter on one side of the border kills a victim on the other, or if, as in the leading case, false statements originating inside the United States …
