Burning Pain Secondary To Clozapine Use: A Case Report., Bradley Linton, Rachel Fu, Penny A Macdonald, Hooman Ganjavi Oct 2014

Burning Pain Secondary To Clozapine Use: A Case Report., Bradley Linton, Rachel Fu, Penny A Macdonald, Hooman Ganjavi

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

BACKGROUND: The first of the atypical antipsychotics introduced in the 1970s, clozapine remains the most efficacious neuroleptic to this day. However, serious and potentially fatal side effects have necessitated careful regular monitoring among prescribing clinicians. Some adverse effects (e.g. ischaemic bowel) remain under recognized, while newly identified adverse effects continue to be described in the literature.

CASE PRESENTATION: In this report, we describe a healthy 43-year old Caucasian male who experienced onset of a full body deep burning pain several months after the onset of treatment with clozapine. The pain worsened over time, ceased with cessation of treatment, and returned …

A Causal Model To Predict Organizational Knowledge Sharing Via Information And Communication Technologies, Simon Cleveland Oct 2014

A Causal Model To Predict Organizational Knowledge Sharing Via Information And Communication Technologies, Simon Cleveland

CCE Theses and Dissertations

Knowledge management literature identifies numerous barriers that inhibit employees' knowledge seeking and knowledge contributing practices via information and communication technologies (ICTs). Presently, there is a significant gap in the literature that explains what factors promote common knowledge sharing barriers. To bridge this gap, this study examined two research questions: 1) What are the potential factors that contribute to the commonly accepted barriers to knowledge sharing?, and 2) How do these factors impact employees' use of ICTs for knowledge seeking and knowledge contributing? Literature review of 103 knowledge management articles identified three major barriers to knowledge sharing practices (lack of time, …

Taking Active Learning To The Next Level: Increasing Student Engagement By Blending Face-To-Face Instruction And Digital Learning Objects, Lindsey Mclean, Elisa Acosta

LMU Librarian Publications & Presentations

The instruction librarians at a four-year, private university developed a multi-year information literacy instruction program to meet recently implemented information literacy learning outcomes in the university’s new core curriculum. The sequential information literacy instruction program includes two required library interventions in the first year - a tutorial to introduce students to basic information literacy concepts and a face-to-face library instruction session to build on the concepts learned in the tutorial. This structured program has presented many opportunities for the librarians to experiment with and assess creative and innovative approaches to instruction. In this presentation we will discuss one such approach …

Libraries Faculty & Staff Presentations

In this poster session, we share our expertise in the development of short videos for use in information literacy programming. Specifically, we address development and assessment of learning outcomes for our One Minute Tips video series, and the relevant subject categories for students at our university. Additionally, we discuss the concept of information layering, and how to successfully incorporate elements of popular culture. We provide tips for promotion and use as well as assessing usage metrics. You can view our videos on the Old Dominion University Libraries' YouTube channel http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCDnm8O5CigbS6Cit_mr7xbQ/videos .

Learning Through Play, The Old School Way, Lucinda Rush

Libraries Faculty & Staff Presentations

Poster presentation at the Virginia Library Association Conference on October 23, 2014. This poster introduces new ideas for instructional design using game structures that students are already familiar with to teach information literacy concepts. It is well documented that millennials enjoy learning through collaboration with peers and self-exploration in a fast-paced, technology rich environment, and game-based instruction can be a great way to engage them in the classroom. While millennials are comfortable with technology and enjoy learning through video and web-based games, it is difficult for libraries with limited resources to compete with the expectations that students have based on …

Open Access And The Health Professions, Musselman Library

Open Access Week at Gettysburg College

Health Sciences students at Gettysburg College have bountiful access to scholarly and medical publications, but what happens after graduation? When you enter a health profession, will you be able to access the information you need to make informed decisions on the job?

Students are asking hard questions about the cost of information, who pays, and why it matters (see this SURGE blog post for one perspective: Information – Access:Denied). Learn more about the publishing system that fuels your learning, including the growing importance of “open access” publishing.

Please join us for a fun program during Open Access Week. This …

Open Access Week at Holy Cross

The speaker is a faithful user of open access materials in her profession and also provides open access to the College’s Archives and Special Collections through the Archives’ website, Crossworks and the Internet Archive. Did I Sign My Rights Away? Copyright For Authors, Janelle L. Wertzberger Oct 2014

Did I Sign My Rights Away? Copyright For Authors, Janelle L. Wertzberger

Open Access Week at Gettysburg College

Most authors sign publication contracts without reading them carefully, and consequently transfer all rights to a publisher. Is there another option? (Yes, there is!)

Join us for Did I sign my rights away? Copyright for authors on Wednesday, 10/22/14, at noon (Specialty Dining Room 19).

This session will explain copyright for authors in plain English. Hear successful strategies used by academic authors, review a typical publication contract, and learn about tools that can help you retain the rights you wish to keep while continuing to work with scholarly publishers. If you like, bring a recent publication contract that you signed. …

Invisible No More: Domestic Workers Organizing In Massachusetts And Beyond, Natalicia Tracy, Tim Sieber, Susan Moir Scd

Tim Sieber

Domestic workers across the country are making it clear that, even in a difficult political environment, it is possible to make gains for low-wage workers. For the first time in many, many decades, domestic workers are finding ways to win. They are creat
ing policy change that will improve the lives of hundreds of thousands of workers in tangible and substantial ways. The 2014 Massachusetts Domestic Workers’ Bill of Rights is the most expansive codification of rights for this long-overlooked part of the labor force ever to be enacted. In one sense, there is nothing new about domestic workers organizing …

Estimation Of Global Network Statistics From Incomplete Data, Catherine A. Bliss, Christopher M. Danforth, Peter Sheridan Dodds Oct 2014

Estimation Of Global Network Statistics From Incomplete Data, Catherine A. Bliss, Christopher M. Danforth, Peter Sheridan Dodds

College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences Faculty Publications

Complex networks underlie an enormous variety of social, biological, physical, and virtual systems. A profound complication for the science of complex networks is that in most cases, observing all nodes and all network interactions is impossible. Previous work addressing the impacts of partial network data is surprisingly limited, focuses primarily on missing nodes, and suggests that network statistics derived from subsampled data are not suitable estimators for the same network statistics describing the overall network topology. We generate scaling methods to predict true network statistics, including the degree distribution, from only partial knowledge of nodes, links, or weights. Our methods …
