Power America's — And Nevada's — Advanced Industries: State By State, Region By Region, Mark Muro

Brookings Scholar Lecture Series

With the U.S. economy still flat, economic experts and leaders continue to search for the next source of U.S. and regional growth. One key component of the next era of prosperity can be projected: It is what the Brookings Metropolitan Policy Program calls the advanced industry (AI) sector. The nation’s most strategic R&D — and STEM worker intensive industries, AIs like aerospace and IT are prime movers of regional and national prosperity, because they are key sources of technology innovation and generate domestic and international exports. Accordingly, the AI swatch of 50 discrete industries has emerged as an important new …

Case Study Two: Jewish Time Jump: New York, Owen Gottlieb

Articles

Gottlieb presents an early case study of his mobile augmented reality game Jewish Time Jump: New York design on the ARIS platform for the iPhone and iPad (iOS). The game is set on-location in Washington Square Park in New York city. Players in 5th-7th grade take on the role of time-traveling reporters, landing on site on the eve of the Uprising of 20,000, the largest women-led strike in U.S. History. Based on their GPS location they receive media from over 100 years in the past, interactive with digital characters as they work to gather a story for the fictional Jewish …

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

Mammalian extinction worldwide during the Late Pleistocene has been a major focus for Quaternary biochronology and paleoecology. These extinctions have been variably attributed to the impacts of climate change and human interference. However, until relatively recently, research has been largely restricted to the Americas, Europe, and Australasia. We present the oldest Middle-Late Pleistocene stratified and numerically dated faunal succession for the Indian subcontinent from the Billasurgam cave complex. Our data demonstrate continuity of 20 of 21 identified mammalian taxa from at least 100,000 y ago to the present, and in some cases up to 200,000 y ago. Comparison of this …

Chronology And Ecology Of Late Pleistocene Megafauna In The Northern Willamette Valley, Oregon, Daniel Mcgowan Gilmour, Virginia L. Butler, Jim E. O'Conner, Edward Byrd Davis, Brendan J. Culleton, Douglas J. Kennett, Gregory Hodgins

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Since the mid-19th century, western Oregon's Willamette Valley has been a source of remains from a wide variety of extinct megafauna. Few of these have been previously described or dated, but new chronologic and isotopic analyses in conjunction with updated evaluations of stratigraphic context provide substantial new information on the species present, timing of losses, and paleoenvironmental conditions. Using subfossil material from the northern valley, we use AMS radiocarbon dating, stable isotope (δ13C and δ15N) analyses, and taxonomic dietary specialization and habitat preferences to reconstruct environments and to develop a local chronology of events that we then compare with continental …

Charter School Facilities Funding, Sarah C. Mckenzie, Gary W. Ritter Oct 2014

Charter School Facilities Funding, Sarah C. Mckenzie, Gary W. Ritter

Policy Briefs

The equity and adequacy of facilities funding for charter schools (as well as traditional public schools (TPS)) is a topic of hot debate in Arkansas and across the country. Proponents of charters argue that charter schools are burdened due to a lack of facilities funding. Other argue that there are great needs in our TPS districts as well, and that these needs should be met first. This brief describes what facilities funding is currently available to charter schools in Arkansas and what other states are doing that we could possibly leverage here in the Natural State.

Executive Function And Mental Health In Adopted Children With A History Of Recreational Drug Exposures, Brian J. Piper, Hilary M. Gray, Selena M. Corbett, Melissa A. Birkett, Jacob Raber

Psychology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Adoptive children are at increased risk for problematic behaviors but the origin of these individual differences in neurobehavioral function is unclear. This investigation examined whether adopted children with prenatal exposure to a wide variety of recreational drugs exhibited higher scores (i.e. more problems) with executive function and psychiatric symptomology. Caregivers of children ages 5 to 18 completed an online survey with items about use of alcohol, nicotine, or methamphetamine during pregnancy followed by the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF, N = 437 including 59 adoptive parents) or the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL, N = 549 including 54 adoptive …

Outstanding Educational Performance Awards: Highlighting High-Achieving Arkansas Schools, 2014, Charlene A. Reid, Gary W. Ritter

Arkansas Education Reports

The GPA measure, we believe, is a better representation of student achievement on statewide standardized exams. In this report, we are presenting a list of the top 25 schools in each area. In some cases, these "top 25 lists" will contain more than 25 schools as some schools' GPA scores will be identical. This is not a new phenomenon, as we also exceeded 25 schools in previous reports when using the percent proficient and advanced metric as an indicator for student achievement; however, there are fewer ties using the more precise GPA measure.

After we present our overall snapshot of …

"In The Early Days Of A Better Nation": Enhancing The Power Of Metadata Today With Linked Data Principles#11;, John Mark Ockerbloom

John Mark Ockerbloom

We need not wait for the wholesale redesign of metadata and workflows to semantic web and linked data technologies in order to begin taking advantage of their design principles. This talk will show how metadata organized and presented in ways that encourage sharing, widespread reuse, and broad collaboration organized around community "hubs" can significantly improve resource discovery as well as other library services and information needs. Examples will be shown from systems designed around linked data standards and technologies and systems not so designed. While standard linked data formats and interfaces can aid in metadata reuse and maintenance, more general …

Generation Open: Researchers' Roles in the Age of Openness

An increasing number of research funders require free public access to the outcomes of funded research. To comply with the requirement, some researchers choose to publish their findings in open access journals. Given that there are so many choices, what should researchers consider when choosing an open access journal to publish?

To celebrate Open Access Week (October 20-26, 2014), the University of Kentucky Libraries hosted a workshop that aimed to help you answer the above question.

Information about open access is available from the University of Kentucky Libraries open access research guide.

Ready Reference Collections: A History, Carol A. Singer

Carol A Singer

Ready reference collections were originally formed, and still exist, because they perform a valuable function in providing convenient access to information that is frequently used at the reference desk. As library collections have been transformed from print to electronic, some of the materials in these collections have inevitably also been replaced by electronic resources. This article explores the historical roots of ready reference collections and their recent evolution.

Digital Media Use In Art Therapy, Natalie Rae Carlton Oct 2014

Digital Media Use In Art Therapy, Natalie Rae Carlton

Expressive Therapies Dissertations

This art-based, phenomenological inquiry investigated how four art therapists and five art therapy clients have used digital media. Polarities in how computer-mediated materials are experienced and the larger impacts of technology on clients, therapists, and the therapeutic encounter were exposed. New media have brought constant contradiction in characterization just as all previous technologies have reflected responses from unease to adaptation. Some key questions in the research are how digitized materials are being used in art therapy and by whom and when? Related questions are what effects can these materials have for clients and what learning, interests, and media adaptations have …
