Social Media For International Students: It's Not All About Facebook, Grace Saw, Wendy Abbott, Jessie Donaghey, Carolyn Mcdonald

Jessie Donaghey

According to the OECD there are nearly four million tertiary students enrolled in a course outside their country of citizenship. In 2010 there were 335 273 international students enrolled in higher education in Australia. To support these students during their study, libraries need to find ways to communicate and engage with them.An Australian study found that international students’ preferred methods for learning about library services was through library webpages and personal contact with library staff. As more libraries experiment with social networking to inform and connect with students, we need to determine the effectiveness of this strategy for reaching international …

Vessel Traffic Service (Vts): A Maritime Information Service Or Traffic Control System? Understanding Everyday Performance And Resilience In A Socio-Technical System Under Change, Gesa Praetorius Aug 2014

Vessel Traffic Service (Vts): A Maritime Information Service Or Traffic Control System? Understanding Everyday Performance And Resilience In A Socio-Technical System Under Change, Gesa Praetorius

Gesa Praetorius

Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) is a shore-side maritime assistance service that supports bridge teams in their safe navigation of port approaches and other areas that present navigational difficulties. The VTS is implemented in national waters and provides vessels with information through transmissions and broadcasts on Very High Frequency (VHF) radio. With a continued growth in the number, size and cargo volumes of merchant vessels, the role of the VTS has recently become a matter of discussion, and it has been argued that changes, such as implementing an aviation-like control system, would be of an enormous benefit for stakeholders and guarantee …

Public Management In Political Institutions: Explaining Perceptions Of White House Chief Of Staff Influence, José Villalobos, Justin Vaughn, David Cohen Aug 2014

Public Management In Political Institutions: Explaining Perceptions Of White House Chief Of Staff Influence, José Villalobos, Justin Vaughn, David Cohen

José D. Villalobos

The notion that public managers influence organizational performance is common in public administration research. However, less is known about why some managers are better at influencing organizational performance than others. Furthermore, relatively few studies have systematically examined managerial influence and scholars have yet to investigate either quantitatively or systematically managerial influence in the White House. Utilizing original survey data collected from former White House officials who served in the Reagan, George H.W. Bush, and Clinton administrations, this study applies empirical public management theory to examine for the first time the key determinants that shape perceptions of chief of staff managerial …

Finding Empathy For Users: A Plain Language Model, Russell Willerton

Russell Willerton

In their bestselling book on developing memorable ideas, Made to Stick, authors Chip and Dan Heath discuss what they named the “curse of knowledge”: once you know something it’s difficult to remember what life is like without knowing it.

As a UX expert, you possess a wide array of knowledge and experiences that allow you to help improve your clients’ products and even their processes. You conduct tests, observations, and analyses to create interfaces that align with users’ goals and expectations. You help interfaces go from good to great and from great to spectacular. On the surface your knowledge is …

The Ups And Downs Of Knowledge Infrastructures In Science: Implications For Data Management, Christine L. Borgman, Peter T. Darch, Ashley E. Sands, Jillian C. Wallis, Sharon Traweek Aug 2014

The Ups And Downs Of Knowledge Infrastructures In Science: Implications For Data Management, Christine L. Borgman, Peter T. Darch, Ashley E. Sands, Jillian C. Wallis, Sharon Traweek

Christine L. Borgman

The promise of technology-enabled, data-intensive scholarship is predicated upon access to knowledge infrastructures that are not yet in place. Scientific data management requires expertise in the scientific domain and in organizing and retrieving complex research objects. The Knowledge Infrastructures project compares data management activities of four large, distributed, multidisciplinary scientific endeavors as they ramp their activities up or down; two are big science and two are small science. Research questions address digital library solutions, knowledge infrastructure concerns, issues specific to individual domains, and common problems across domains. Findings are based on interviews (n=113 to date), ethnography, and other analyses of …

Keynote: Data, Data, Everywhere, Nor Any Drop To Drink (Slides), Christine L. Borgman

Christine L. Borgman

The Research Data Alliance is convening researchers, policy makers, funders, repository managers, librarians, archivists, publishers, open data activists, and other stakeholders to address the stewardship of the world’s research data assets. Overarching issues are becoming clear: the need for coordination among stakeholders, economic challenges to the sustainability of archives, and misaligned public policies for open access to publications and data. The practice and policy issues on the ground are much less well understood, however. Norms for the acquisition, release, and reuse of data –and the very definition of data – vary widely between research domains, and motivations to share data …

Intervening At The Intersection Of Medication Adherence And Health Literacy, Jackie H. Jones, Linda A. Treiber, Matthew C. Jones Aug 2014

Intervening At The Intersection Of Medication Adherence And Health Literacy, Jackie H. Jones, Linda A. Treiber, Matthew C. Jones

Linda A. Treiber

Medications play a prominent role in the treatment of many illnesses. Failing to adhere to prescribed medication regimens contributes to an array of poor health outcomes. In addition to the cost in terms of human suffering, the financial cost of medication non-adherence is staggering. Poor health literacy has been identified as a major cause of medication non-adherence. This paper focuses on non-adherence related to health literacy in the older adult population in the United States. Eight simple interventions to aid healthcare personnel in working with this population to improve adherence are provided.

“You Can’T Learn It In School”: Field Experiences And Their Contributions To Education And Professional Identity, Kristin Hoffmann, Selinda Berg Aug 2014

“You Can’T Learn It In School”: Field Experiences And Their Contributions To Education And Professional Identity, Kristin Hoffmann, Selinda Berg

Selinda Adelle Berg

Field experiences are uniquely positioned at the intersection of education and the workplace, making them key sites for the development of professional identity, which results from socialization processes that occur in both education and work environments. To explore how field experiences complement, diverge from, and intersect with classroom experiences, this research analysed interviews with and reports of Canadian library and information science students who did coop placements in academic libraries. The findings confirm that field experiences are important for linking classroom learning to practice and that they help illuminate the realities of librarianship and clarify the implications of classroom learning …

Creatures Of Incoherence: Dissecting The Drivers, History, And Cognition Of Attitudinal Incongruence In The American Body Politic, Timothy Collins Aug 2014

Creatures Of Incoherence: Dissecting The Drivers, History, And Cognition Of Attitudinal Incongruence In The American Body Politic, Timothy Collins

Timothy Collins

Most American conservatives and liberals wield contradictory political attitudes. This dissertation explores what drives this “attitudinal incongruence.” First, I define and operationalize my terminology and situate the topic within social and political psychology to formulate my central model and theory of ideologically asymmetrical application of (1) individuals’ psychological and cognitive traits, and (2) individuals’ social identity and environmental traits. This leads to the overarching hypothesis that conservatives’ incongruities are more strongly driven by internal forces, and liberals’ by external forces. The central model is then demonstrated in a broad historical overview of attitudinal incongruence in America. The central tenets of …

The Wealthiest One Percent, Lester G. Telser Aug 2014

The Wealthiest One Percent, Lester G. Telser

Lester G Telser

The distribution of the returns to stock portfolios of various sizes and the distribution of the gains from stock holdings among households implies that households own relatively few stocks. The evidence shows that the more diversified is the stock portfolio, the less variable the return. Hence to observe a high concentration of the gains among households suggests that they do not pursue the safer course of holding diversified stock portfolios. It seems plausible therefore that luck plays a bigger role than skill in determining the return from stock holdings. This essay supports this conclusion with a variety of evidence.

Development And Validation Of An Instrument To Assess Imminent Risk Of Homelessness Among Veterans, Ann Elizabeth Montgomery, Jamison Fargo, Vincent Kane, Dennis P. Culhane Aug 2014

Development And Validation Of An Instrument To Assess Imminent Risk Of Homelessness Among Veterans, Ann Elizabeth Montgomery, Jamison Fargo, Vincent Kane, Dennis P. Culhane

Dennis P. Culhane

Objectives. Veterans are overrepresented within the homeless population compared with their non-veteran counterparts, particularly when controlling for poverty. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) aims to prevent new episodes of homelessness by targeting households at greatest risk; however, there are no instruments that systematically assess veterans’ risk of homelessness. We developed and tested a brief screening instrument to identify imminent risk of homelessness among veterans accessing VA health care.
Methods. The study team developed initial assessment items, conducted cognitiveinterviews with veterans experiencing homelessness, refined pilot items based on veterans’ and experts’ feedback and results of psychometric analyses, and assigned …

Aging Out Of Foster Care, Johanna K.P. Greeson, Allison E. Thompson

Johanna K.P. Greeson, PhD, MSS, MLSP

The transition from adolescence to adulthood is a significant developmental stage. When foster youth age out of the child welfare system, they are at risk of having to transition without family support. This chapter applies the life course perspective to describe the theoretical and contextual foundation that explains the hardships foster youth experience when emancipated from the US child welfare system. Next, the theoretical basis for natural mentoring among foster youth is explored using the resiliency perspective to frame the discussion. Then, current research on natural mentoring among foster youth is reviewed. Implications are drawn for US child welfare practice, …

Schools Of Thought And Economists' Opinions On Economic Policy, Luca De Benedictis, Michele Di Maio Aug 2014

Schools Of Thought And Economists' Opinions On Economic Policy, Luca De Benedictis, Michele Di Maio

Luca De Benedictis

In this paper we bring to data the hypothesis that economists’ opinions are related to the schools of thought they declare to belong to. Two are the main results of our analysis, based on a novel dataset on Italian economists’ opinions. The first one is that, on average, differences in the School of Thought predict differences in economists’ opinions on a large set of normative questions on economic policy, even controlling for individual and other group or community characteristics, spatial and knowledge heterogeneity, and political orientation. Second, the way of grouping together different schools of thought is crucial as far …

Network Analysis Of World Trade Using The Baci-Cepii Dataset, Luca De Benedictis, Silvia Nenci, Gianluca Santoni, Lucia Tajoli, Claudio Vicarelli

Luca De Benedictis

In this paper we explore the BACI-CEPII database using Network Analysis. Starting from the visualization of the World Trade Network, we then define and describe the topology of the network, both in its binary version and in its weighted version, calculating and discussing some of the commonly used network’s statistics. We finally discuss some specific topic that can be studied using Network Analysis and International Trade data, both at the aggregated and sectoral level. The analysis is done using multiple software (Stata, R, and Pajek). The scripts to replicate part of the analysis are included in the appendix, and can …

Assessing The Cross-National Transferability Of Policy Measures For Tackling Undeclared Work, Colin C. Williams, Rositsa Dzhekova, Marijana Baric, Josip Franic, Lyubo Mishkov

Colin C Williams

The aim of the present Working Paper No. 5 is to provide a preliminary assessment of the appropriateness of possible policy approaches for tackling undeclared work as well as their transferability to three target countries: Bulgaria (BG), Croatia (HR) and FYR Macedonia (FYROM). This assessment will result in highlighting a set of promising policy practices that can be tested empirically in terms of their acceptability among the population and stakeholders in the three Southeast European states.
