Government Rail Asset Sales, And Return To The Public Sector, In New Zealand And Tasmania, Philip G. Laird Aug 2014

Government Rail Asset Sales, And Return To The Public Sector, In New Zealand And Tasmania, Philip G. Laird

Dr Philip Laird

The paper outlines the sale, with a track lease, in 1993 of the state owned New Zealand Railways Corporation to a consortium, TranzRail Holdings formed by the United States and New Zealand interests. It also notes increases in productivity and traffic levels to 1999 with subsequent problems leading to the New Zealand Government agreeing in 2003 to repurchase and rehabilitate the track. The paper then outlines transfer of effective ownership of the trains and related services in 2003 to an Australian company, and in 2008 back to the New Zealand Government at appreciable net cost. After a brief outline of railways …

Libraries, archives, museums, and other cultural heritage organizations collect, create, and steward a rapidly increasing volume of digital content. Both research conclusions and professionals’ real-life experiences expose the inherent fragility of this content. The cultural heritage and information science communities have developed guidelines, best practices, policies, procedures, and processes that can enable an organization to achieve high levels of digital preservation. However, these protocols are often complex, leaving many practitioners attempting to address the challenge of preserving digital materials …

Animals & Society Courses: A Growing Trend In Post-Secondary Education, Jonathan Balcombe Aug 2014

Animals & Society Courses: A Growing Trend In Post-Secondary Education, Jonathan Balcombe

Jonathan Balcombe, PhD

A survey of college courses addressing nonhuman animal ethics and welfare issues indicates that the presence of such courses has increased greatly since a prior survey was done in 1983. This paper provides titles and affiliations of 67 of 89 courses from the current Survey. These courses represent 15 academic fields, and a majority are entirely devoted to animal issues. The fields of animal science and philosophy are proportionally well represented compared with biology and wildlife-related fields. An estimated 5000 or more North American students are now receiving instruction in these issues each year. While the availability of courses in …

I was in Japan for one year (1985-1986) on the research grant of the Japan Foundation while writing my book Yoshiwara and subsequent book Ooku. Recently I found a collection of my brief observations and comments on various aspects of Japanese life. I had come to the United States as a college freshman in 1953, and although I had gone back to Japan for brief visits and research since then, I had not lived there over a couple of months. My comments in 1985-86 are interesting because of the passage of time since then. It is also light-hearted and humorous …

Cumulating Evidence About The Social Animal: Meta-Analysis In Social-Personality Psychology, Blair T. Johnson Dr., Marcella H. Boynton Dr.

Blair T. Johnson

Like most scientific fields, social-personality psychology has experienced an explosion of research related to such central topics as aggression, attraction, gender, group processes, motivation, personality, and persuasion, to name a few. The proliferation of research can be a monster unless it is tamed with the scientific review strategy of meta-analysis, literally analyses of past analyses that produce a quantitative and empirical history of research on a particular phenomenon. The purpose of this article is to outline the basic process and statistics of meta-analysis, as they pertain to social-personality psychology. Meta-analysis involves: (i) defining the problem under review; (ii) gathering qualified …

Increasing Participation In The Pilot Weather Reporting (Pirep) System Through User Interface Design, Stephen M. Casner Aug 2014

Increasing Participation In The Pilot Weather Reporting (Pirep) System Through User Interface Design, Stephen M. Casner

Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering

Although pilots regard pilot weather reports (PIREPs) as valuable flight planning resources, the number of PIREPs that pilots submit is relatively small. In a previous survey, pilots indicated that submitting PIREPs sometimes requires too much effort, and that they are often unable to recall the information fields required to complete a report. Pilots also indicated that the idea of submitting a PIREP often does not occur to them, and that they feel that other pilots are mainly interested in receiving reports about severe weather. In this study the authors attempt to address obstacles to submitting PIREPs by proposing two alternative …

The Impact Of Foreign Postings On Accompanying Military Spouses: An Ethnographic Study, Gillian Blakely, Catherine Hennessy, Man C. Chung, Heather Skirton Aug 2014

The Impact Of Foreign Postings On Accompanying Military Spouses: An Ethnographic Study, Gillian Blakely, Catherine Hennessy, Man C. Chung, Heather Skirton

All Works

As part of an ethnographic study, the impact of foreign postings on spouses who accompany military personnel was explored. Individual interviews and focus groups with 34 British military spouses based in one location in southern Europe were conducted. Key findings suggested that reaction to a foreign posting was a reflection of personal attitudes, prior experiences, support, ability to adjust to change and strength of relationship with the serving spouse and community. For many the experience was positive due to the increased opportunity for family time, for others this helped to compensate for the difficulties experienced. Some military spouses experienced significant …

Task-Switching In Oculomotor Control: Systematic Investigations Of The Unidirectional Prosaccade Switch-Cost, Jeffrey Weiler Aug 2014

Task-Switching In Oculomotor Control: Systematic Investigations Of The Unidirectional Prosaccade Switch-Cost, Jeffrey Weiler

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

An antisaccade requires suppressing a stimulus-driven prosaccade (i.e., response suppression) and remapping a target’s spatial location to its mirror-symmetrical position (i.e., vector inversion). Notably, my previous work demonstrated that the successful execution of an antisaccade selectively lengthens the reaction time (RT) of a subsequently completed prosaccade (i.e., the unidirectional prosaccade switch-cost; Weiler & Heath, 2012a; Weiler & Heath, 2012b). Thus, the objective of this dissertation was further investigate, and ultimately provide a mechanistic explanation for the unidirectional prosaccade switch-cost.

In Chapter Two, I demonstrate that the magnitude of the unidirectional prosaccade switch-cost is not dependent of the number of …

The purpose of this paper is to examine the links between olive growing, hospitality and tourism in an emerging olive growing region, as well as challenges olive grove operators face. A qualitative approach is taken in the form of face-to-face and telephone interviews among 23 olive grove operators in Western Australia from a sample of 33 operations identified. Almost half of the respondents indicated being open to the public in some form, including ellar door sales and hospitality facilities, such as a cafe´. Other respondents are currently in the process of developing hospitality facilities or plan to be associated to …

Wine Tourism In The Canary Islands: An Exploratory Study, Abel Alonso, Lynnaire Sheridan, Pascal Scherrer Aug 2014

Wine Tourism In The Canary Islands: An Exploratory Study, Abel Alonso, Lynnaire Sheridan, Pascal Scherrer

Abel D Alonso

Wine tourism is experiencing significant development in both new and old European wine regions. In the case of the Canary Islands, wine has been produced and traded for centuries; however, little is known about the current state or potential for wine tourism development in this archipelago, despite the fact that millions of tourists, including many potential wine tourists, visit the islands each year. In this exploratory study, the perspectives of winery owners and managers on wine tourism are examined. In-depth face-to-face interviews among 23 small winery operators reveal that the scope for exploiting wine tourism on the islands has been …

Tourism And Hospitality Small And Medium Enterprises And Environmental Sustainability, Abel Alonso, Alfred Ogle Aug 2014

Tourism And Hospitality Small And Medium Enterprises And Environmental Sustainability, Abel Alonso, Alfred Ogle

Abel D Alonso

While environmental sustainability is increasingly gaining relevance, it appears to have been ignored in certain areas, such as in research on water usage of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the hospitality and tourism industries. The purpose of this paper is to examine this dimension from the perspective of the operators. Semi-structured face-to-face and telephone interviews were conducted with ten managers/operators in the Swan Valley region of Western Australia. Strong manager/operator awareness of the impact of their actions on the environment was demonstrated. Also salient was the factors impinging on implementation of environmental initiatives. Business demands or added costs also …

Internationalisation Of Small And Medium New Zealand Wineries: An Exploratory Study, Abel Alonso Aug 2014

Internationalisation Of Small And Medium New Zealand Wineries: An Exploratory Study, Abel Alonso

Abel D Alonso

Internationalisation strategies, such as exports, present business and growth opportunities for many enterprises, including those small and medium. In recent years, many of these small and medium enterprises (SMEs) have become predominant in New Zealand’s burgeoning wine sector. Despite the importance that the growth of this group represents, in terms of their contribution to New Zealand’s economy, little has been reported to date small and medium winery operators, particularly from an academic perspective. Lack of academic research is obvious concerning operators’ involvement, intentions or perspectives on internationalisation strategies. This study examines these dimensions from a group of 82 small and …

Expanding The Destination Image: Wine Tourism In The Canary Islands, Pascal Scherrer, Abel Alonso, Lynnaire Sheridan

Abel D Alonso

Tourism to the Canary Islands is centered around competitively priced holidays focused on the sun and beach mass tourism experience. A restructure of the islands’ wine industry offers opportunities for developing new tourism alternatives based on gourmet products and traditional landscapes. This paper examines the potential of wine tourism from winery operators’ perspectives. Challenges to overcome in the development of a successful sustainable local wine tourism industry include the need for expansion of the destination image to reflect the region’s wine-making history and scenic qualities; a shift towards independent high-yield travellers; and reintroducing local produce in the mass tourism product. …
