Fisheries Licensing For The Future Workshop, Paul Anderson
Fisheries Licensing For The Future Workshop, Paul Anderson
University of Maine Office of Research Administration: Grant Reports
We have 1) hosted the Licensing Workshop and 2) drafted a white paper report from that meeting as stated in the original proposal. Last year we asked for a no cost extension identifying additional outcomes given the political climate and need for organizing discussions among influential policymakers. We have convened a Working Group of these policymakers twice in the past 6 months and have still determined that while we have moved the licensing conversation to the fore, among these groups, licensing as an issue has not yet matured enough to support the release of a Licensing white paper.
Spatial Dynamics In Fisheries Stock Assessment, Yong Chen
Spatial Dynamics In Fisheries Stock Assessment, Yong Chen
University of Maine Office of Research Administration: Grant Reports
Most fisheries stock assessments assume that the spatial distribution of fish and/or fishing effort is random (Hilborn and Walters 1992), even though this is rarely the case (Paloheimo and Dickie 1964, Caddy 1975, Hilborn and Walters 1992, Tilzey 1994, Hutchings 1996, Chen et al. 1998, Hart 2001). The target stock is often aggregated and the distribution of fishing effort reflects this spatial pattern, along with other factors such as management restrictions, distance to port, vessel size, and the experience and habits of individual fishers. This often results in high spatial variation in fishing effort and mortality.
Ignoring this spatial variation …
Responding To Foreclosures In Cuyahoga County: 2013 Evaluation Report, Kathryn Hexter, Molly Schnoke
Responding To Foreclosures In Cuyahoga County: 2013 Evaluation Report, Kathryn Hexter, Molly Schnoke
All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications
In 2005, Cuyahoga County became one of the first places in the nation to respond to the rapid increase in the number of residential foreclosure filings. In response to concerns raised by suburban mayors, the County developed a comprehensive foreclosure prevention initiative. The County’s response was multi-faceted and included modifications to the judicial foreclosure process to make foreclosures faster and fairer, greater coordination across County agencies involved in foreclosures such as the sheriff, the prosecutor, the treasurer and the recorder. A key facet of the response was the creation of the Cuyahoga County Foreclosure Prevention Program (CCFPP) which involves face …

Distributional Effects Of Welfare Reform Experiments: A Panel Quantile Regression Examination, Carlos Lamarche, Robert Paul Hartley
Distributional Effects Of Welfare Reform Experiments: A Panel Quantile Regression Examination, Carlos Lamarche, Robert Paul Hartley
University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series
In an influential article, Bitler, Gelbach and Hoynes (American Economic Re- view, 2006; 96, 988-1012) illustrate the importance of estimating heterogeneous impacts of welfare reform experiments. They find that the mean treatment effect offers an uninfor- mative summary of opposing effects, while the treatment effects are significantly different across quantiles. We replicate their results and evaluate the robustness of their findings to accounting for individual-specific heterogeneity possibly associated with welfare program participation. We find results that are in general similar to Bitler’s et al. findings, although the interpretation of labor supply effects in the upper tail is revised. We find …
Little League, Richard C. Crepeau
Little League, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
The Little League World Series is often the occasion for comment but usually it involves subjects such as rabid parents or hyperventilating coaches. This time the comments coming out of Williamsport, where fracking rather than baseball usually dominates the landscape, had a feel good aspect to them.

Socio-Spatial Transformation And Contested Space At The Street Level In Latin America: The Case Of Cali, Colombia, Maria Janeth Mosquera Becerra
Socio-Spatial Transformation And Contested Space At The Street Level In Latin America: The Case Of Cali, Colombia, Maria Janeth Mosquera Becerra
Dissertations and Theses
Since 2008, more than 50% of the world's population has lived in cities and it is projected that by 2050 around 87% will do so. Designing infrastructure in urban spaces has become increasingly critical for achieving human well-being. This dissertation examines socio-spatial transformation processes related to urbanization, economic development and the marginalization of utilitarian cycling in Cali, Colombia, as a particular expression of the struggle for transportation space occurring in urban areas. The research analyzes (a) the socio-spatial processes that have restricted the use of bicycles as a means of transportation in the city of Cali, Colombia; and (b) the …

Perspectives On The Global Financial Crisis From Emerging Managers And Public Policy Makers [Full Version], James L. Grant
Financial Services Forum Publications
This manuscript attempts to capture the perspectives of emerging managers and public policy makers as evinced in the perspectives of graduate students and others who were enrolled in my newly developed course on the global financial crisis—first offered in the 2010 Harvard Summer Economics Program—at a time when students were engaged in the midst and aftermath of the most severe U.S. and worldwide recession since the Great Depression of the early 1930s. The many perspectives gathered on the causes, consequences, remedies, and perhaps more importantly, a glimpse at student thoughts, concerns, and worries at the time—have been collected from the …

A Parent-Teacher View Of Teens Behaviors In Nuclear And Joint Family Systems In Pakistan, Noor-Ul-Ain Baig, Rana Rashid Rehman, Noor Mobeen
The Qualitative Report
This research work tries to unveil the changing teen’s behaviors in nuclear and joint family systems in Pakistan. Pakistan enjoys the social values of joint families; and, where grandparents are very important constituent of the family, the family structure is an important component in shaping the teens behaviors. Therefore, this paper focuses the sample of parents and teachers of the teens in the postmodern urban society and tried to better point out the eminent changes in the attitudes and behaviors of teens. This study follows a qualitative approach of research that pursues a phenomenological inquiry describing lived experience of the …
Living With Cancer Aged 75 And Older: A Biographical Narrative Case-Study, Nicholas David Hughes
Living With Cancer Aged 75 And Older: A Biographical Narrative Case-Study, Nicholas David Hughes
The Qualitative Report
Aging is associated with greater incidence of disease and illness, including cancers. Extensive literature reports incidence, prevalence, and treatment of cancers in older individuals. The subjective perceptions of older individuals undergoing the experience of cancer remain largely unknown. The case-study reported in this article is derived from a larger study whose aim was to investigate the experiences of older people of living with cancer. Data were generated using narrative interviews with 20 individuals aged 76-87 diagnosed with one of four common cancers. Interview data were analysed using the concept of the “illness trajectory” (Corbin & Strauss, 1988). In this article …
A Failed [Yet Successful Narrative] Review Of D. Jean Clandinin's Engaging In Narrative Inquiry, Alissa Gardenhire
A Failed [Yet Successful Narrative] Review Of D. Jean Clandinin's Engaging In Narrative Inquiry, Alissa Gardenhire
The Qualitative Report
What happens when an overwhelmed, yet hungry for qualitative immersion, well-intentioned person [me] attempts to review a very thoughtful and well-done book on narrative inquiry [Clandinin, 2013]? Evidently an autobiographical narrative inquiry takes place. Well let me tell you the story...you'll laugh, you'll cry...I did anyway.

Risk Perception And Beliefs About Volcanic Hazards: A Comparative Study Of Puna District Residents, Melanie Marie Leathers
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this research is to better understand how residents of communities located on the flanks of Kilauea, Hawai'i view the hazards associated with volcanic events taking into account hazard proximity, cultural beliefs, municipal trust, and evacuation planning. The study was conducted in the lower Puna district, an area with a rapidly growing population but limited infrastructure.
Data were collected though a questionnaire survey undertaken at venues throughout the district, including grocery markets, bakeries, farmers markets, the public pool, and other gathering places. Overall, the results indicated that people understand the natural hazards of the place but are generally …

Technology Transfer Into China: Preparing For A New Era, Arnoud De Meyer
Technology Transfer Into China: Preparing For A New Era, Arnoud De Meyer
Arnoud DE MEYER
Currently, there are three forces creating a more favourable background for western multinational companies to do new business in China by transferring new technology. First, growing overcapacity means China requires not traditional turnkey factories, but instead, technology which leads to innovation and improvement. Second, a changing attitude by all levels of Chinese government to demanding state-of-the-art technology including software instead of previous generation technology, and to technology management and commercial implementation more. Third, intellectual property rights are becoming better respected. The author makes suggestions to best manage technology transfer into China, with this changed background. Based on six case studies …

One of the key elements of innovation management is the determination and implementation of a sound technology strategy. The purpose of this paper is to offer a framework and a detailed overview of what it entails to develop and implement a technology strategy. The paper emphasizes the alignment of the strategy with the organisational competencies and the …
