The Effects Of Semantic Neighborhood Density On The Processing Of Ambiguous Words, Mark J. Mcphedran Aug 2014

The Effects Of Semantic Neighborhood Density On The Processing Of Ambiguous Words, Mark J. Mcphedran

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Semantic neighborhood density’s effects on the processing of ambiguous words were examined in three lexical decision experiments. Semantic neighborhoods were defined in terms of semantic set size and connectivity in Experiment 1, and in terms of semantic set size in Experiments 2 and 3. In Experiment 1, set size, connectivity, and ambiguity were crossed. An ambiguity disadvantage was observed for large set, high connectivity words, and there was some suggestion of an ambiguity advantage for small set, high connectivity words. Experiments 2 and 3 held connectivity constant at a high level, and set size and ambiguity were crossed, with Experiment …

Measuring And Recognizing The Value Of Purchased Goodwill: A Note On Market Value Measurement Method, Indra Abeysekera Aug 2014

Measuring And Recognizing The Value Of Purchased Goodwill: A Note On Market Value Measurement Method, Indra Abeysekera

Indra Abeysekera

Through a review of literature and with conceptual underpinnings, this paper demonstrates that relying on the market value measurement method to ascertain value of purchased goodwill does not contribute to more accurate value of the financial worth of the firm.It argues that the use of market value for the measurement of purchased goodwill for recognition in financial statements is a mere artifact and a response to the contemporary paradigm rather than a measure of the accurate financial worth of purchased goodwill. It demonstrates the need to seek a measurement method that does not impose a transaction as a necessary precondition …

Role Of Remuneration Committee In Narrative Human Capital Disclosure, Indra Abeysekera Aug 2014

Role Of Remuneration Committee In Narrative Human Capital Disclosure, Indra Abeysekera

Indra Abeysekera

This study empirically investigates whether independent directors on the remuneration committee influence narrative human capital disclosure (NAHCD) in firms where independent directors dominate the board composition. NAHCD is measured by frequency of occurrence, using latent content analysis in the annual reports of the top 30 listed firms on the Colombo Stock Exchange from 1998 to 2006. This study examines two attributes of corporate governance, controlling for other corporate governance attributes and firm-level attributes. The findings highlight the importance of considering a firm’s independent director involvement in the remuneration committee when determining NAHCD strategy.

Erm Maintenance: Mapping, Maximizing And Marketing Multiple User Access Methods, Susan A. Massey Aug 2014

Erm Maintenance: Mapping, Maximizing And Marketing Multiple User Access Methods, Susan A. Massey

Susan A. Massey

The proliferation of discovery layers to access library materials poses challenges for electronic resource record loading, maintenance, display, and marketing of multiple user portals. Centralized discovery systems promise to reduce data silos but may complicate electronic resource management activities and mask the importance of the library as a data provider. Electronic resource maintenance must include cross-departmental cooperation for tracking statistics, making purchased titles available to the user, updating subscription changes, verifying metadata display and access in multiple user interfaces, storing metadata files for potential future system migrations, deduplication of processes, and crosswalks between discovery layers. This presentation uses the University …

Assessing The Impacts Of Climate Change, Urbanization, And Filter Strips On Water Quality Using Swat, Mike Psaris, Heejun Chang Aug 2014

Assessing The Impacts Of Climate Change, Urbanization, And Filter Strips On Water Quality Using Swat, Mike Psaris, Heejun Chang

International Journal of Geospatial and Environmental Research

Precipitation changes and urban growth are two factors altering the state of water quality. Changes in precipitation will alter the amount and timing of flows, and the corresponding sediment and nutrient dynamics. Meanwhile, densification associated with urban growth will create more impervious surfaces which will alter sediment and nutrient loadings. Land and water managers rely on models to develop possible future scenarios and devise management responses to these projected changes. We use the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) to assess potential changes in stream flow, sediment, and nutrient loads in two urbanizing watersheds in Northwest Oregon, USA. We evaluate …

Slide To Unlock: Creating A Technology-Integrated Environment For Our Students, Matthew J. Fuller Aug 2014

Slide To Unlock: Creating A Technology-Integrated Environment For Our Students, Matthew J. Fuller

Dissertations

The focus of this study is to explore how to support teachers in capitalizing on students’ technology skills, experiences, and preferences to offer enhanced teaching and learning experiences in school. Using a framework developed by Wagner et al. (2006), technology integration is systemically examined in terms of “4 Cs:” context, culture, conditions, and competencies to construct an “As-Is” picture of a school district based upon current realities. Next, a series of changes are proposed and the 4 Cs are used to describe the “To-Be” picture of the organization at the end of the proposed change journey. The three teachers who …

Memory Restoration, Julianne E. Henderson Ms. Aug 2014

Memory Restoration, Julianne E. Henderson Ms.

julianne e. henderson ms.

Memory maintains the power to shape our realities: it can rewrite the past, influence our future, and it constantly informs our present. When synaptic connections fire to retrieve desired information passing between neurons, memories appear to be amorphous, fluid, and impressionable. They are not set in stone, but rather open to edits and alterations belonging to the observer in question. Our recall is like time-lapse photography, with frames lined up side by side to create a living and dynamic succession of events that are rich with colors, sounds, scents, textures, and feelings. The human mind constantly oscillates back and forth …

Prof. Vibhuti Patel "What Is In Store For Women In The Union Budget 2014-15?", Professor Vibhuti Patel

Professor Vibhuti Patel

The Gender Budget Cells envisaged serving as focal points for coordinating gender budgeting initiatives within their Ministries and across Departments have played major role in budgetary allocations of the Union Budget 2014-15. So far 56 Ministries/Department have confirmed setting up of a cell/nominating a nodal person. This could materialize because the Ministry of Women and Child Development, in collaboration with UN Women, developed a Manual and Handbook for Gender Budgeting for Gender Budget Cells for Central Ministries and Departments. This strategy of the Government on Gender Budgeting and Gender Mainstreaming during 2004 to 2014 resulted in many State Governments like …

Consumer Preferences With Regard To Local And Sustainable Seafood, Dylan Cowley, Jesse R. Coulon Aug 2014

Consumer Preferences With Regard To Local And Sustainable Seafood, Dylan Cowley, Jesse R. Coulon

Journal of Environmental and Resource Economics at Colby

Seafood is an increasingly important source of sustenance as it provides an energy efficient, low environmental impact source of protein. New innovations and techniques have improved fishing efficiency and scale, making seafood relatively inexpensive to catch. However, this increase in volume has consequently generated a growing global concern about the environmental impacts of seafood production and harvesting. The resulting increase in seafood demand was matched by an inverse decrease in fish stock. For example, tuna has decreased in global population by 80% since 1970, and is decimated by severe overfishing.

In order to educate consumers about the environmental effects of …

Municipal Recycling In Waterville: A Choice Experiment, Katharine V. Eddy, Alec A. Finigan Aug 2014

Municipal Recycling In Waterville: A Choice Experiment, Katharine V. Eddy, Alec A. Finigan

Journal of Environmental and Resource Economics at Colby

The city of Waterville, Maine has experienced many struggles with establishing an economically and socially beneficial method for collecting recyclables from residents. In 2006, the town made the choice to terminate its curbside recycling pickup and open the Skills facility, where residents were able to transport there recyclables and dispose of them at the facility. This proved to also not be economically beneficial and the town ended this option for residents in 2012. The motivation behind establishing a new recycling program in Waterville is making Waterville more environmentally friendly, the creation of jobs for residents in the trash collecting business, …

Potential Investment In High-Efficiency Snowmaking At Sugarloaf, Lindsay C. Jarrett Aug 2014

Potential Investment In High-Efficiency Snowmaking At Sugarloaf, Lindsay C. Jarrett

Journal of Environmental and Resource Economics at Colby

Northern Maine will potentially suffer from temperatures increases, effecting the recreational value of the skiing industry. Sugarloaf currently has 300 high-efficiency snowguns that allow the mountain to make snow at higher temperatures and lower costs than the old equipment. With the threat of increasing temperatures, there is a need to invest in new technology in order to maintain ski season length and maintain a reputation as one of the largest, best skiing in New England. With current hourly temperatures in November, Sugarloaf would need to invest in 540 new high-efficiency snowguns at a cost of about $1.8. The costs incurred …

Leap: Land Endowment Action Plan For Sustainable Colby, Victoria Palffy Aug 2014

Leap: Land Endowment Action Plan For Sustainable Colby, Victoria Palffy

Journal of Environmental and Resource Economics at Colby

This paper proposes that Colby College purchase land endowments to fuel its recently constructed campus biomass plant. Rather than contract with a third party, the college should invest in 30,000 acres2 and sustainably harvest its own renewable fuel. Beyond this, LEAP, the land endowment action plan, presents an opportunity to improve forest health, conserve valuable ecosystems, implement major additions to the curriculum, gain fuel independence, and create a constant annual revenue stream. With a 40-year payback period, the long-term investment brings profits of over $260 million in its 100-year outlook.

Modeling Maine’S Rockweed Harvest, Meagan Hennessey Aug 2014

Modeling Maine’S Rockweed Harvest, Meagan Hennessey

Journal of Environmental and Resource Economics at Colby

Currently, Maine is in a political struggle over the best way to manage the harvesting of Rockweed, or Ascophyllum nodosum. As the dominant macro algae along the state’s rocky intertidal zone it supports over 150 different species, meaning its loss could impact food web stability, protection of endangered species, and support of economically viable harvests. This work takes parameters found in the literature to create a Stella model, which is then manipulated to explore the relative impact of possible management strategies. It is found that a strictly accurate model is not possible to create given the current biological knowledge and …

A Choice Experiment Survey Analysis Of Public Preferences For Renewable Energy In The United States, Lucy O'Keeffe Aug 2014

A Choice Experiment Survey Analysis Of Public Preferences For Renewable Energy In The United States, Lucy O'Keeffe

Journal of Environmental and Resource Economics at Colby

In recent years, the need to address anthropogenic contributions to climate change and develop more sustainable energy sources has placed pressure on U.S. policymakers to expand the development of renewable energy sources. The creation of renewable portfolio standards (RPS), production tax credits, and investment tax credits have been an impetus for the recent growth in U.S renewable energy capacity; currently, renewable energy accounts for 13% of the U.S. Electricity Supply and this figure is projected to grow (Energy Information Agency, 2013). Therefore, economic analysis related to public preferences toward renewable energy has become increasingly critical to help inform renewable energy …

A Cost Benefit Analysis Of Improving Energy Efficiency Of A Fitness Facilty, Inuri A. Illeperuma

Journal of Environmental and Resource Economics at Colby

Abstract: Nearly 40% of the total U.S. energy consumption in 2012 was consumed in residential and commercial buildings, as recorded by U.S. Energy Information Administration. With the urgent need to reduce overall energy consumption in the U.S., many efforts are made to improve the energy efficiency of buildings. However, energy managers identify budget constraints as one of the main obstacles in improving the energy efficiency of buildings. Hence this study focuses on a cost benefit analysis of improving the energy efficiency, with a special focus on fitness facilities in college environments. As a case study, the author focuses on improving …

The Impact Of Nature In Art: A Hedonic Price Analysis Of Early Twentieth Century Paintings, Jack Lundeen Aug 2014

The Impact Of Nature In Art: A Hedonic Price Analysis Of Early Twentieth Century Paintings, Jack Lundeen

Journal of Environmental and Resource Economics at Colby

Many studies have been conducted investigating the influences of art auction prices. These studies offer attributes such as size, medium and sale date, but they often overlook the subject matter and content of paintings. There is little evidence available of what effect the presence of nature in art has on the auction price. This paper performs a hedonic analysis on a series of early twentieth century paintings to explore how auction prices change when trees, the ocean, and mountain landscapes are depicted. “The Ashcan School” of painters provide the set of works and were selected due to their similarities as …

Willingness-To-Pay For Renewable Wind Energy: Differences In Preferences Between Demographic Groups, Carlton D. Reed, William H. Scott Aug 2014

Willingness-To-Pay For Renewable Wind Energy: Differences In Preferences Between Demographic Groups, Carlton D. Reed, William H. Scott

Journal of Environmental and Resource Economics at Colby

Many surveys have shown that public acceptance of wind energy is high in general; however there always seems to be concerns at the local level during the siting and permitting process. This shows that people understand that clean wind energy is an essential need, however people do not normally want to have turbines in their own community. This choice experiment determines which benefits people prefer and which trade-offs people are willing to make in order to host a wind farm in their community. The effectiveness of several attributes, and their respective ability to rid apathy and concerns about local wind …

Individuals Willingness To Pay For Health And Wellness In The Built Environment, Max Pollinger Aug 2014

Individuals Willingness To Pay For Health And Wellness In The Built Environment, Max Pollinger

Journal of Environmental and Resource Economics at Colby

Improving biological sustainability through health and wellness improvements in the built environment is currently being applied to high-end real estate development in both the residential and commercial environment in the United States. However, the market for health and wellness extends well beyond the top income bracket. This study adopts a choice experiment (CE) approach to investigate individual’s willingness to pay (WTP) for health and wellness improvements within their homes. The results suggest that individuals value health as an inelastic good independent of income, and they are willing to pay significant premiums to ensure biological sustainability within their homes independent of …

Clean Cooking: The Value Of Clean Cookstoves In Ethiopia, Shannon H. Kooser Aug 2014

Clean Cooking: The Value Of Clean Cookstoves In Ethiopia, Shannon H. Kooser

Journal of Environmental and Resource Economics at Colby

This project investigates how demographic differences affect the way people value clean cookstoves in Ethiopia. Previous research indicates that traditional cooking methods are harmful to human health as well as the environment, as people need to cut down trees or collect other biomass sources for fuel. However, clean stoves can solve both these environmental and health problems, as well as provide a sustainable method for cooking and heating in developing countries. Using choice survey data, this study examines Ethiopian households’ valuations of different characteristics of stoves, including durability, fuel reduction, smoke reduction and the amount of time they may save …
