Basic Psychological Needs, Suicidal Ideation, And Risk For Suicidal Behavior In Young Adults, Peter C. Britton, Kimberly A. Van Orden, Jameson K. Hirsch, Geoffrey C. Williams
ETSU Faculty Works
Associations between the satisfaction of basic psychological needs of autonomy, competence, and relatedness with current suicidal ideation and risk for suicidal behavior were examined. Two logistic regressions were conducted with a cross-sectional database of 440 university students to examine the association of need satisfaction with suicidal ideation and risk for suicidal behavior, while controlling for demographics and depressive symptoms. Suicidal ideation was reported by 15% of participants and 18% were found to be at risk for suicidal behavior. A one standard deviation increase in need satisfaction reduced the odds of suicidal ideation by 53%, OR (95% CI) = 0.47 (0.33–0.67), …

The Bioscience Cluster In Ohio, Candi Clouse, Ziona Austrian
All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications
The purpose of this report is to create a shared definition and understanding of the bioscience industry across the state of Ohio. Bioscience is a relatively small industry, but it is growing both globally, nationally, and in Ohio. It is also linked to many other industries through its technologies, suppliers, and customers. This report will not only develop a deeper knowledge of the industry and its role in the economy, but we will suggest selected standards on how to study this industry and how to track its progress over time. This report is the first phase of a larger study …
Ebbinghaus Illusion In Touch As Evidence For The Two Stream Perception-Action Hypothesis, Erin R. Smith
Ebbinghaus Illusion In Touch As Evidence For The Two Stream Perception-Action Hypothesis, Erin R. Smith
All NMU Master's Theses
The Ebbinghaus Illusion (also known as Titchener's circles) is a classic visual illusion. The illusion consists of two inner circles of the same size, with one circle surrounded by a group of larger circles, and the other circle surrounded by a group of smaller circles. Due to the context of the surrounding circles, individuals perceive the inner circle surrounded by the smaller outer circles to be larger, when in fact, both inner circles are the same size. This thesis presents the first evidence of the existence of the Ebbinghaus illusion in the tactile modality. Participants underwent various tactile-tactile and tactile-visual …
The Effect Of Naltrexone On Nicotine-Induced Conditioned Place Preference In Rats, Jonathan M. Adams
The Effect Of Naltrexone On Nicotine-Induced Conditioned Place Preference In Rats, Jonathan M. Adams
All NMU Master's Theses
Nicotine is the central active ingredient in tobacco. The reinforcing effects of nicotine can be studied in animals through self-administration, conditioned place preference, and other approaches that enable researchers to assess nicotine cessation strategies. One strategy involves the use of opioid receptor antagonists. For instance, naloxone has been shown to reduce place preference for nicotine in rats, and other experimental opioid antagonists have also been shown to affect place preference for nicotine. The present study sought to extend these findings to the opioid antagonist naltrexone, which has long been FDA-approved for the treatment of opioid and alcohol addiction in humans. …
Human Centered Design Applied To Perceptual Paradigms, Jonathan T. Fancher
Human Centered Design Applied To Perceptual Paradigms, Jonathan T. Fancher
All NMU Master's Theses
This thesis gives three examples of projects that apply knowledge from areas such as human centered design, computer science, and psychology to study sensation and perception. All three of these projects were created to gather information on how humans interact with their surrounding environment and the world. For instance the first area of discovery included the way humans interact within their perceptual and personal space through an interactive table. The second project looks at exploring the neural mechanisms that affect Haptic Hallucinations by creating a device that can give the feeling of bugs crawling on or below the surface of …
Mother, Father, Or Parent?: College Students' Intensive Parenting Attitudes Differ By Referent, Holly H. Schiffrin, Miriam Liss, Katherine Geary, Haley Miles-Mclean, Taryn Tashner, Charlotte Hagerman, Kathryn Rizzo
Mother, Father, Or Parent?: College Students' Intensive Parenting Attitudes Differ By Referent, Holly H. Schiffrin, Miriam Liss, Katherine Geary, Haley Miles-Mclean, Taryn Tashner, Charlotte Hagerman, Kathryn Rizzo
Psychological Science
Although intensive parenting is considered a dominant ideology of child-rearing, the tenets have only recently been operationalized. The Intensive Parenting Attitudes Questionnaire (IPAQ) was designed to assess the prescriptive norms of how people should parent and includes scales assessing the ideas that parenting is fulfilling, but challenging, and should be child-centered, involve intellectual stimulation, and is best done by women. The original IPAQ refers to parents, rather than mothers or fathers specifically, and was developed and validated on both women who were and were not mothers. The current investigation was designed to determine (a) whether women hold stronger intensive parenting …
Coercive Airpower In The Precision Age: The Effects Of Precision Guided Munitions On Air Campaign Duration, Brett A. King
Coercive Airpower In The Precision Age: The Effects Of Precision Guided Munitions On Air Campaign Duration, Brett A. King
Department of Political Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Prior scholarship on the duration of coercive air campaigns has often focused on regime type, the adversary’s vulnerability (of both military forces and civilian population), and the involvement of additional forces (ground/naval). Strong findings emerged that emphasized the significance of democratic attackers and the target state’s vulnerability to their political and military strategies. These findings, however, do not address the role of the technological capabilities of the attacking states’ air forces. A more detailed explanation of military capabilities may help to fill in this hole in the research, particularly how military capabilities affect the coercing state’s ability to coerce an …

Social Work Students' Attitudes And Perceptions About The Affordable Care Act, Yvichess Goddard
HIM 1990-2015
Objectives: Few research studies have analyzed college students' attitudes of health reform caused by the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Specifically, no studies exist looking at undergraduate and graduate social work students' views on current health reform. The study will ask two questions: (1) What do Social Work students know about the components and potential impacts of the ACA, and (2) Are there any characteristics of students associated with their level of knowledge or attitudes about the Act? Methods: A 53-item survey questionnaire inquiring knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions related to health reform and the Affordable Care Act was dispersed to a …

The Effect Of Yoga Lessons On Young Children's Executive Functioning, Heidi L. Beattie
The Effect Of Yoga Lessons On Young Children's Executive Functioning, Heidi L. Beattie
Department of Psychology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Individual differences in preschool and school-aged children’s attention, inhibition and spatial working memory were examined after exposure to a yoga intervention. Previous research has found that exposure to yoga has improved attention in both adults and children. Previous research, however, is limited in regards to examining this relationship in a preschool-aged population. The purpose of the current study is to examine and compare the relationship between preschool-aged as well as school-aged children’s attention, inhibition, and spatial working memory abilities for children who participated in a yoga intervention and children who do not participate in a yoga intervention. Twenty-six 4 to …

Preliminary Forensic Analysis Of The Xbox One, Jason Moore, Ibrahim Baggili, Andrew Marrington, Armindo Rodrigues
Electrical & Computer Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications
Video game consoles can no longer be viewed as just gaming consoles but rather as full multimedia machines, capable of desktop computer-like performance. The past has shown that game consoles have been used in criminal activities such as extortion, identity theft, and child pornography, but with their ever-increasing capabilities, the likelihood of the expansion of criminal activities conducted on or over the consoles increases. This research aimed to take the initial step of understanding the Xbox One, the most powerful Microsoft console to date. We report the outcome of conducting a forensic examination of the Xbox One, and we provide …

Testing The Forensic Soundness Of Forensic Examination Environments On Bootable Media, Ahmed F.A.L. Mohamed, Andrew Marrington, Farkhund Iqbal, Ibrahim Baggili
Electrical & Computer Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications
In this work we experimentally examine the forensic soundness of the use of forensic bootable CD/DVDs as forensic examination environments. Several Linux distributions with bootable CD/DVDs which are marketed as forensic examination environments are used to perform a forensic analysis of a captured computer system. Before and after the bootable CD/DVD examination, the computer system's hard disk is removed and a forensic image acquired by a second system using a hardware write blocker. The images acquired before and after the bootable CD/DVD examination are hashed and the hash values compared. Where the hash values are inconsistent, a differential analysis is …

Re-Evaluating The Criminal Investigative Process: An Empirical Evaluation Of Criminal Investigations In The United States, Jeremiah J. Rayner
Re-Evaluating The Criminal Investigative Process: An Empirical Evaluation Of Criminal Investigations In The United States, Jeremiah J. Rayner
Dissertations
Criminal investigations are a fundamental part of the police mission. Little research or scientific inquiry has been considered in this area. However, within the past fifty years there has been some noteworthy research performed. Still, the amount of research undertaken within the realm of the criminal investigative process has not corresponded to the magnitude of its importance in everyday police operations. The research by Chaiken, Greenwood, and Petersillia (1976) on the criminal investigative process was the most substantial contribution to the research of the criminal investigative process in its time. However, in 2001 nearly twenty-five years had passed since the …
Help-Yourself City: Market-Driven Planning And D.I.Y. Responses In Making The “Neoliberal” Streetscape, Gordon Douglas
Help-Yourself City: Market-Driven Planning And D.I.Y. Responses In Making The “Neoliberal” Streetscape, Gordon Douglas
Faculty Publications, Urban and Regional Planning
Since the 1970s, the consequences of global economic restructuring and the rise of free-market “neoliberal” ideologies in governance have been visible in most every arena of social life, but are perhaps nowhere more visible than in urban space. The humble bus stop, a basic element of local transit service, is today often turned over in large part to private advertising interests and in the process has become both an indicator of neglect and a symbol of the commodification of public space. This paper examines such physical manifestations of neoliberal planning policy in the urban streetscape – spatial neglect and inequality …
Assessing Within-Household Selection Methods In Household Mail Surveys, Kristen Olson, Mathew Stange, Jolene D. Smyth
Assessing Within-Household Selection Methods In Household Mail Surveys, Kristen Olson, Mathew Stange, Jolene D. Smyth
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
Household surveys are increasingly moving toward self-administered modes of data collection. To maintain a probability sample of the population, researchers must use probability methods to select adults within households. However, very little experimental methodological work has been conducted on within-household selection in mail surveys. In this study, we experimentally examine four methods—the next-birthday method, the last-birthday method, selection of the youngest adult in the household, and selection of the oldest adult in the household—in two mail surveys of Nebraska residents (n = 2,498, AAPOR RR1 36.3 percent, and n = 947, AAPOR RR1 31.6 percent). To evaluate how accurately respondents …

Based off of previous studies done in PSM, clear differences …
Using Social Media In The Classroom: Assessment Of Its Effectiveness., Jennifer Wright
Using Social Media In The Classroom: Assessment Of Its Effectiveness., Jennifer Wright
Jennifer Wright Joe
Social media can be an effective tool in promoting critical thinking and collaboration in library instruction. Whether it is simple polls or a much more collaborative event, these methods engage students and allow them to interact with material, professors, and other students in an organized fashion that might not be feasible without the use of technology. However, many faculty members are quick to incorporate these new learning tools without regard to their effectiveness. In this session, several applications of social media will be presented and their effectiveness will be discussed. Then, to conclude, the participants will discuss the best way …

Egocentric Reference Frame Bias In The Palmar Haptic Perception Of Surface Orientation, Allison Coleman , '13, Frank H. Durgin
Egocentric Reference Frame Bias In The Palmar Haptic Perception Of Surface Orientation, Allison Coleman , '13, Frank H. Durgin
Psychology Faculty Works
The effect of egocentric reference frames on palmar haptic perception of orientation was investigated in vertically separated locations in a sagittal plane. Reference stimuli to be haptically matched were presented either haptically (to the contralateral hand) or visually. As in prior investigations of haptic orientation perception, a strong egocentric bias was found, such that haptic orientation matches made in the lower part of personal space were much lower (i.e., were perceived as being higher) than those made at eye level. The same haptic bias was observed both when the reference surface to be matched was observed visually and when bimanual …
Daily Racial Microaggressions And Ethnic Identification Among Native American Young Adults, Merrill D. Jones, Renee Vickerman Galliher
Daily Racial Microaggressions And Ethnic Identification Among Native American Young Adults, Merrill D. Jones, Renee Vickerman Galliher
Psychology Faculty Publications
The current study investigated 114 Native American young adults’ experiences of racial microaggressions, and links between microaggression experiences and self-reported ethnic and cultural identification. Microaggressions were assessed using the Daily Racial Microaggressions scale, Short Form (DRM). Ethnic identity and cultural participation were assessed using the Multigroup Ethnic Identity Measure (MEIM) and the Orthogonal Cultural Identification Scale (OCIS). Participants reported strong identification with their Native/indigenous ethnicity, along with stronger commitment than exploration on the two MEIM subscales. On the OCIS, participants reported moderately strong identification with Native culture and practices, with strong identification with White American culture. Females reported higher White …
Econometric Analysis Of Continuous Time Models: A Survey Of Peter Phillips' Work And Some New Results, Jun Yu
Research Collection School Of Economics
Econometric analysis of continuous time models has drawn the attention of Peter Phillips for 40 years, resulting in many important publications by him. In these publications he has dealt with a wide range of continuous time models and the associated econometric problems. He has investigated problems from univariate equations to systems of equations, from asymptotic theory to finite sample issues, from parametric models to nonparametric models, from identification problems to estimation and inference problems, from stationary models to nonstationary and nearly nonstationary models. This paper provides an overview of Peter Phillips' contributions in the continuous time econometrics literature. We review …
Robustify Financial Time Series Forecasting With Bagging, Sainan Jin, Liangjun Su, Aman Ullah
Robustify Financial Time Series Forecasting With Bagging, Sainan Jin, Liangjun Su, Aman Ullah
Research Collection School Of Economics
In this paper we propose a revised version of (bagging) bootstrap aggregating as a forecast combination method for the out-of-sample forecasts in time series models. The revised version explicitly takes into account the dependence in time series data and can be used to justify the validity of bagging in the reduction of mean squared forecast error when compared with the unbagged forecasts. Monte Carlo simulations show that the new method works quite well and outperforms the traditional one-step-ahead linear forecast as well as the nonparametric forecast in general, especially when the in-sample estimation period is small. We also find that …
Identifying Latent Structures In Panel Data, Liangjun Su, Zhentao Shi, Peter C. B. Phillips
Identifying Latent Structures In Panel Data, Liangjun Su, Zhentao Shi, Peter C. B. Phillips
Research Collection School Of Economics
This paper provides a novel mechanism for identifying and estimating latent group structures in panel data using penalized regression techniques. We focus on linear models where the slope parameters are heterogeneous across groups but homogenous within a group and the group membership is unknown. Two approaches are considered — penalized least squares (PLS) for models without endogenous regressors, and penalized GMM (PGMM) for models with endogeneity. In both cases we develop a new variant of Lasso called classifier-Lasso (C-Lasso) that serves to shrink individual coefficients to the unknown group-specific coefficients. C-Lasso achieves simultaneous classification and consistent estimation in a single …
Shrinkage Estimation Of Regression Models With Multiple Structural Changes, Junhui Qian, Liangjun Su
Shrinkage Estimation Of Regression Models With Multiple Structural Changes, Junhui Qian, Liangjun Su
Research Collection School Of Economics
In this paper we consider the problem of determining the number of structural changes in multiple linear regression models via group fused Lasso (least absolute shrinkage and selection operator). We show that with probability tending to one our method can correctly determine the unknown number of breaks and the estimated break dates are sufficiently close to the true break dates. We obtain estimates of the regression coefficients via post Lasso and establish the asymptotic distributions of the estimates of both break ratios and regression coefficients. We also propose and validate a data-driven method to determine the tuning parameter. Monte Carlo …

Unilateral Emissions Mitigation, Spillovers, And Global Learning, Shurojit Chatterji, Sayantan Ghosal, Sean Walsh, John Whalley
Research Collection School Of Economics
What's the role of unilateral measures in global climate change mitigation in a post-Durban, post 2012 global policy regime? We argue that under conditions of preference heterogeneity, unilateral emissions mitigation at a subnational level may exist even when a nation is unwilling to commit to emission cuts. We establish that under certain assumptions, in a global strongly connected network of countries, learning the costs of switching to a low emissions activity can result in a universal adoption of such activities. We analyze the features of a policy proposal that could accelerate convergence to a low carbon world in the presence …
Minimum Investment Requirements, Financial Market Globalization, And Symmetry Breaking, Haiping Zhang
Minimum Investment Requirements, Financial Market Globalization, And Symmetry Breaking, Haiping Zhang
Research Collection School Of Economics
We incorporate wealth heterogeneity and the minimum investment requirements in the model of Matsuyama (2004, Econometrica) and provide a complete characterization of symmetry breaking. In particular, we identify the extensive margin of investment as a key channel through which the interest rate may respond positively to capital accumulation, or equivalently, the interest rate can be higher in the rich than in the poor countries. Then, financial market globalization may lead to “uphill” capital flows from the poor to the rich countries, which widens the initial cross-country income gap and leads to income divergence among inherently identical countries, a phenomenon that …
