Saving Time In The Long-Run: A New Workflow For Thesis Submissions, Emily Stenberg Jul 2014

Saving Time In The Long-Run: A New Workflow For Thesis Submissions, Emily Stenberg

Digital Commons+ Great Lakes User Group Annual Meeting

In January 2014, representatives from the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences and University Libraries at Washington University agreed to move the master's thesis submission process from a local, electronic form directly to the university's repository Open Scholarship, which is supported by Digital Commons. While the reasons for this change included streamlining the process for both students and administrators, making this decision ended up being the easiest part of the process, which took close to six months for repository staff to fully implement. Around the same time, the Graduate School of Art began requiring its master's students to post their …

Policy Update: Federal And State Legislation To Support Grandfamilies, Ana Beltran Jul 2014

Policy Update: Federal And State Legislation To Support Grandfamilies, Ana Beltran

GrandFamilies: The Contemporary Journal of Research, Practice and Policy

Building on the progress of the last 20 years, helpful federal and state legislation continues to be pursued on behalf of grandfamilies. This update summarizes policy efforts during the last year and looks ahead to what is on the horizon. At the federal level, legislative efforts are focused on grandfamilies who are involved with the child welfare system. States are responding to federal activity by enacting policies to place more children with relatives and better serve grandfamilies who come into contact with the system, including “family finding” laws and including fictive kin as “relatives.” State policymakers are also striving to …

Grandfamilies Outcome Workgroup’S (Grow) Review Of Grandfamilies Support Groups: An Examination Of Concepts, Goals, Outcomes And Measures, Kerry A. Littlewood

GrandFamilies: The Contemporary Journal of Research, Practice and Policy

A support group is the most widely used intervention for grandparents and other relatives raising children. Support groups require few resources to establish and are relatively inexpensive to implement. Despite the popularity of support groups for grandfamilies, there is little evidence evaluating their effectiveness to improve the lives of its members. In response to this issue and to support outcome-based research in the field, the Grandfamilies Outcome Workgroup (GrOW) was established. This study highlights GrOW’s review of the literature on the effectiveness of support groups for grandfamilies. Next, the GrOW Inventory of Support Groups (GrOW Inventory) was developed to explore …

The Rewards Of Caring For Grandchildren: Black Canadian Grandmothers Who Are Custodial Parents, Co-Parents, And Extensive Babysitters, Esme Fuller-Thomson, Sarah Serbinski, Leanne Mccormack Jul 2014

The Rewards Of Caring For Grandchildren: Black Canadian Grandmothers Who Are Custodial Parents, Co-Parents, And Extensive Babysitters, Esme Fuller-Thomson, Sarah Serbinski, Leanne Mccormack

GrandFamilies: The Contemporary Journal of Research, Practice and Policy

Grandparent caregiving is a growing phenomenon in both the United States and Canada. The burgeoning research on the topic has focused on custodial grandparents with an emphasis on negative aspects including poor physical and mental health outcomes for older adults. Less attention has been paid to the rewards of grandparent caregiving and to different intensities of caregiving provision. This grounded theory qualitative study of 16 Black Caribbean Canadian grandmothers sought to address this gap in the literature. We examined three types of grandparent caregivers: custodial grandparents (n=7), co-parent grandparents (n=5) and extensive babysitters (n=4). The average age of the children …

Evolving An Information Systems Capstone Course To Align With The Fast Changing Singapore Marketplace, Chris Boesch, Benjamin Kok Siew Gan Jul 2014

Evolving An Information Systems Capstone Course To Align With The Fast Changing Singapore Marketplace, Chris Boesch, Benjamin Kok Siew Gan

Chris BOESCH

Every year, around fifty-five undergraduate teams of four to six students are required to complete a capstone course for the School of Information Systems at Singapore Management University. Each team spends approximately five months working with an industry sponsor using the latest tools and techniques. Students actively learn by implementing the system to solve a real world problem. In addition to delivering value to the local sponsor, our students learn specialized skills currently needed in the marketplace, which might not yet be incorporated into electives and core courses. In this paper, we discuss the tradeoffs of providing students and project …

Asimmetria Del Rischio Sistematico Dei Titolo Immobiliari Americani: Nuove Evidenze Econometriche, Paola De Santis, Carlo Drago

Carlo Drago

Student Scholarship: A Promising Engagement Strategy For Growing An Institutional Repository, M Ryan Hess Jul 2014

Student Scholarship: A Promising Engagement Strategy For Growing An Institutional Repository, M Ryan Hess

M Ryan Hess

DePaul University has recently changed its strategy for growing its institutional repository, promoting opportunities for publishing student scholarship. Unlike with faculty works, student scholarship does not evoke strong opinions about copyright and future publishing risks. Instead, it is seen both as a promotional tool for a department or faculty member and as a win for students. Our successes have included student translations of historical French documents held in our library, a student Law journal, a student Nursing journal, student GIS maps and oral histories of artists. The DePaul library will share its experiences with this strategy so that others can …

Presidential Address: Reimagining The Future Of Agriculture: Building Knowledge For Sustainability And Resilience, Keiko Tanaka Jul 2014

Presidential Address: Reimagining The Future Of Agriculture: Building Knowledge For Sustainability And Resilience, Keiko Tanaka

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

The theme of the 2014 SRSA meeting called attention to the interrelationships between agricultural sustainability and community resilience, which have become interrelated goals in building agriculture and communities that support vibrant local food economies in a rapidly globalizing food economy. In this presidential address, I will start with a story of my aunt, who was a farm wife/woman in Tanba Sasayama, Japan. Then, I will return to William H. Friedland’s critique of rural sociology/rural sociologists from 32 years ago to reflect on the impact of an increased importance of these two concepts on transforming the institutional landscape of agricultural sciences. …

Jaringan Purnawirawan Tentara Nasional Indonesia Dalam Politik Relasi Sipil–Militer Pasca Reformasi Tni, Arie S. Soesilo

Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi

This article discusses the entering process of retired military (TNI) officers into politics and their performances in that arena. This article argues that the retired military officer’s roles in politics provided new characteristics to the pattern of civil-military relations in Indonesia. It related to their capability to bridge the communication and to act as muting agent in political conflict between civil and military politicians. This article also asserts that the involvement of retired military officers in politics is strongly based on their commitment to the constitution in building democratic consolidation, which is not representing military interests. Thereby, it criticizes existing …

Demokratisasi Relasi Sipil–Militer Pada Era Reformasi Di Indonesia, Koesnadi Kardi Jul 2014

Demokratisasi Relasi Sipil–Militer Pada Era Reformasi Di Indonesia, Koesnadi Kardi

Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi

Indonesia’s military reform resulted cultural, structural, doctrinal and organizational changes. But those changes are not fundamental enough to build democratic civil–military relation that relies on civilian supremacy. The process of military reform in Indonesia showed us that the success of democratization of civil–military relation depends on institutional setup of the military related to civilian institutions’ persistency, guidance, and initiative. This study used Peter D. Feaver’s theory of “principal-agent” to show that the lack of civilian institutions’ coherence and resoluteness caused persisting problems to the Indonesia’s military reform under democratic system. Civilian supremacy in Indonesia appears to be relied on “voluntary …

On Rural-Urban Differences In Human Capital Formation: Finding The ‘Bottlenecks’, Elton Mykerezi, Genti Kostandini, Jeffery L. Jordan, Ilda Melo

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

Studies have found lower levels of educational achievement for students in rural areas focusing mostly on cross-sectional data. Using the 1997 National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, we follow the same youth cohort to examine whether there are metro-nonmetro gaps in high cognitive achievement, high school graduation, college readiness, degree attainment, and earnings. We find that gaps emerge early in life and they remain constant through high school. In addition, results suggest that rural students graduate from high school at the same rate as their urban counterparts, but they fall behind when it comes to college graduation rates. Growing up in a rural …

Perceptions Of Community And Place And The Migration Intentions Of At-Risk Youth In Rural Areas, Ann E. Theodori, Gene L. Theodori Jul 2014

Perceptions Of Community And Place And The Migration Intentions Of At-Risk Youth In Rural Areas, Ann E. Theodori, Gene L. Theodori

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

Population decline in rural areas is often attributed to the outmigration of young people, particularly those with high educational and occupational aspirations. This study investigates the perceptions of community and place and the migration intentions of rural at-risk youth, an often-overlooked population in community development efforts. Thematic analysis of more than 60 photoliteracy projects and 23 interviews with young people identified as low-income and at-risk resulted in the identification of two major themes: the rural context and migration intentions. Findings support that limited educational and occupational opportunities contribute to participants’ intentions to migrate away from their home communities after high-school …

"I Wanna Have My Own Damn Dairy Farm!”: Women Farmers, Legibility, And Femininities In Rural Wisconsin, U.S., Julie C. Keller

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

The number of women farming in the United States continues to climb, even as the number of farms has been relatively stable in recent years. Nevertheless, women often face an uphill battle in asserting themselves as farmers, particularly if they are living and working in communities in which masculinities and femininities have been shaped over time by the gendered symbolic categories of farmer and farm wife. In light of the discursive power of the title of farmer this article examines women’s pathways into farming to ask: 1) To what extent do women encounter difficulties in being legible as farmers, and …

A Study Of Social Capital And Its Relationship With Dwelling Structure And Environment Based On An Empirical Analysis Of Lincoln, Nebraska, Jeehoon Kim

Department of Geography: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Social capital is described as the concept of social network or social interaction among residents in a neighborhood. In times past, physical environment factors enhancing the level of social capital were main issues to researchers: land-use type and neighborhood design. However, based on various benefits gained from social capital theory, it is needed to study about the influence of social capital. Thus, the impact of social capital on the physical urban environment is investigated in this dissertation research in order to make more livable, healthier, and more active community. Most researches dealing with social capital and housing condition have not …

The Structure And Evolution Of The Academic Discipline Of Law In The United States: Generation And Validation Of Course-Subject Co-Occurrence (Csco) Maps, Peter A. Hook Jul 2014

The Structure And Evolution Of The Academic Discipline Of Law In The United States: Generation And Validation Of Course-Subject Co-Occurrence (Csco) Maps, Peter A. Hook

School of Information Sciences Faculty Research Publications

This dissertation proposes, exemplifies, and validates the usage of course-subject co-occurrence (CSCO) data to generate topic maps of an academic discipline. CSCO is defined as course-subjects taught in the same academic year by the same teacher. This work is premised on the assumption that in the aggregate and for reasons of efficiency, faculty members teach course-subjects that are topically similar to one another. To exemplify and validate CSCO, more than 112,000 CSCO events were extracted from the annual directories of the American Association of Law Schools covering nearly eighty years of law school teaching in the United States. The CSCO …

Hacking Dc: Using Dc's Native Features In Unintended Ways, Michael Priehs, Joshua Neds-Fox

Library Scholarly Publications

The Digital Commons software is relatively feature-rich, but as repository managers we often find ourselves thinking, "I wish I could..." This presentation, delivers at the Digital Commons Great Lakes User Group annual meeting at Valparaiso University, IN, outlines two relatively easy extensions of Digital Commons that use its native features in novel ways. One ("Preserving and Tracking Permissions in Digital Commons") takes advantage of the system to manage permissions recordkeeping, and the other ("Paper of the Day Emails") exploits the quarterly archive for an automatic marketing program. Attendees will discover sustainable ways to keep themselves in copyright compliance and their …

Automating Workflow: From A Trickle To A Stream, Barbara Strauss, Marsha Miles

Michael Schwartz Library Publications

Ideally, bulking up an institutional repository with a full listing of faculty publications is a worthy goal, but how can that be accomplished within a reasonable time period? Cleveland State University implemented Digital Commons in March 2012 with the KickStart program. Since then, faculty publications have been added at a steady, but slow pace. Through a collaborative effort, our Digital Initiatives Librarian worked with others to refine batch processing to increase the flow of record creation and document loading into EngagedScholarship@CSU. With the use of Excel, scripts, faculty CVs and Google Drive, the staff is finding new ways to automate …

Roman Baths At Antiochia Ad Cragum: A Preliminary Evaluation Of Bath Architecture As Social Signals In The Ancient Mediterranean World, Holly J. Staggs

Anthropology Department: Theses

In Rough Cilicia, monumental public architecture was built in the initial phase of the social and political formation of Asia Minor into the Roman Empire during the Imperial Period. As bathing complexes are the most abundant and diverse types of architecture in this region, it would be beneficial to analyze the role of the baths along with their importance in this new Greco-Roman society. This study will focus on two baths at the site of Antiochia ad Cragum, seating this effort in multi-level signaling theory to understand local scale patterning and revised world systems theory to understand regional scale patterning. …

NOTE: A revised and updated version of this presentation was given at the 2014 United States Electronic Theses and Dissertations Association annual conference in Orlando FL in September 2014. Since 2008 EIU has been digitizing ETDs and making them available via the library catalog, I-Share (the state of IL consortia catalog), and WorldCat. It was only after ETDs were included in the institutional repository (The Keep) that the majority of faculty became fully aware of how accessible these theses had become. This dawning realization led to important conversations with faculty and other stakeholders about concerns regarding publishing, grant approval, and …
