The Adaptation Of The Horn Of Africa Immigrant Students In Higher Education, Tekleab Elos Hailu, Heng-Yu Ku
The Qualitative Report
The purpose of this study was to explore the challenges first generation immigrant students from the Horn of Africa encountered in their college learning in the United States and the strategies they used to succeed. The participants in the study were ten first generation immigrant students from the countries in the Horn of Africa. A case study was used as a qualitative methodological approach and three data sources namely questionnaire, intensive interviews, and observations were used to collect and analyze data. The results revealed that language difficulties, financial problems, lack of culture awareness, time constraints, and inadequate guidance are challenges …
Recruitment And Retention Of Vulnerable Populations: Lessons Learned From A Longitudinal Qualitative Study, Evalina Van Wijk
Recruitment And Retention Of Vulnerable Populations: Lessons Learned From A Longitudinal Qualitative Study, Evalina Van Wijk
The Qualitative Report
The main focus of the researcher’s study was to examine the lived experiences of intimate partners of female rape victims within the first six months post rape. Yet, many publications describing longitudinal qualitative studies of sexual assault fail to provide a detailed report on the processes followed, the difficulties experienced, as well as the reasons for such difficulties. To fill theses gaps, in this paper, the researcher describes the strategies applied to recruit and retain the participants for the entire six-month period post rape. The lessons learned during recruitment and data collection are also described. The research question that guided …

Ethics In Fieldwork: Reflections On The Unexpected, Jane Palmer, Dena Fam, Tanzi Smith, Sarina Kilham
The Qualitative Report
Research involving fieldwork can present the researcher with ethical dilemmas not anticipated in institutional ethics approval processes, and which offer profound personal and methodological challenges. The authors' experiences of conducting qualitative fieldwork in four distinctly different contexts are used to illustrate some of these unexpected consequences and ethical dilemmas. Issues encountered included: compromised relationships with informants which develop in unforeseen ways; engagement with traumatized informants which lead to unexpected roles for the researcher such as confidante, dealing with new information that is critical to informants' futures but could undermine the research project, and the implications of ethical decisions for research …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Several investigators have conducted bibliometric analysis of research productivity of different countries in the world. A few studies have also been carried out to assess the productivity and impact of a single institute. As no bibliometric study on Physical Research Laboratory, India has been done before, the researcher thought it appropriate to carry out the study for her doctoral research with the following objectives:
- To study the division wise output of research
- To identify the thrust areas of research at PRL
The present bibliometric study aims to measure the research output of Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) during a 10 year …

Comorbidity Of Infectious Diseases And Anxiety Disorders In Adults And Its Association With Quality Of Life: A Community Study, Cornelia Witthauer, Andrew T. Gloster, Andrea Hans Meyer, Renee D. Goodwin, Roselind Lieb
Publications and Research
Objective: Infectious diseases and anxiety disorders are common and both are associated with substantial burden to individual, families, and society. A better understanding of their association may be helpful in explicating possible etiological mechanisms related to both. The goal of the current study was to investigate the relationship between specific infectious diseases and anxiety disorders among adults in the community, and to examine whether the co-occurrence of the two is associated with poorer quality of life compared to subjects with one or neither condition.
Methods: We used data from the 1998 German Mental Health survey with 4181 subjects aged 18–65. …

Democratizing The Food System- The Food Policy Council Movement, Garrett Spear
Democratizing The Food System- The Food Policy Council Movement, Garrett Spear
Kaleidoscope
The increasing complexity of our modern food system has changed the landscape of American agriculture and diet, and has increasingly consolidated decision-making abilities in a concentrated group of organizations. Local food movements are re-appropriating their food supply chains through a variety of methods, including the democratic-minded food policy council organization. Food policy councils organize community stakeholders into a network of organizations which can collectively grapple with food issues affecting and on behalf of the local community. This study consisted of research on the history and methods of the food policy council movement, directed ultimately at the council-less context in Lexington …

The Relationship Between Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Conduct Disorder, Antisocial Personality Disorder And Psychopathy: A Proposed Trajectory, Taylor Salisbury
The Relationship Between Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Conduct Disorder, Antisocial Personality Disorder And Psychopathy: A Proposed Trajectory, Taylor Salisbury
Taylor C Salisbury
This review paper critically examines the literature on oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), conduct disorder (CD), antisocial personality disorder (APD) and psychopathy. Through examining diagnostic criteria laid out in the DSM-IV along with statistics related to diagnosis and prognosis, the idea that ODD, CD, and APD may fall on a developmental trajectory as opposed to being distinct, categorical entities is proposed. Additionally, the notion that these three disorders may represent narrow, behavioural indicators of a general psychopathic personality is suggested using comparisons to Hare’s Psychopathy Checklist Revised (PCL-R). Several implications related to child development, family instability and violence, as well as …
Mental Health Stigma: The Impact Of Labels For Axis I Versus Axis Ii Disorders In The Dsm-Iv, Taylor Salisbury
Mental Health Stigma: The Impact Of Labels For Axis I Versus Axis Ii Disorders In The Dsm-Iv, Taylor Salisbury
Taylor C Salisbury
This review paper critically examines the literature surrounding the creation of diagnostic categories in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV). Several contrasts between Axis I clinical disorders and Axis II personality disorders are outlined, including differences in treatment options, availabilities, and disorder prognoses. These factors are explored in order to support the notion that the DSM’s arbitrary separation of these labels has created a differential stigma associated with Axis I and Axis II disorders for both patients and clinicians. The current paper explores the political elements involved in the social construction of diagnostic categories in the DSM-IV, …
Adventure Based Counselling: Promoting Positive Interpersonal Behaviour In Mentally Ill Offenders, Taylor Salisbury
Adventure Based Counselling: Promoting Positive Interpersonal Behaviour In Mentally Ill Offenders, Taylor Salisbury
Taylor C Salisbury
The purpose of the current study was to examine the effectiveness of an adventure-based counselling (ABC) program on interpersonal behaviour within a forensic psychiatric population. Very little research has examined the effectiveness of an adventure-therapy approach with this population, and to our knowledge, an ABC program has never been attempted, much less examined for efficacy. Participants in this study were offenders at the Southwest Center for Forensic Mental Health Care in St. Thomas, Ontario who were designated not criminally responsible on account of mental disorder. Offenders took part in a 12-session ABC program which addressed interpersonal skills through various challenge …

Adventure-Based Counselling: Promoting Positive Interpersonal Behaviour In Mentally Ill Offenders, Taylor Salisbury
Taylor C Salisbury
The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of an adventure-based counselling (ABC) program on the interpersonal behaviour of forensic psychiatric inpatients. To our knowledge, no research had examined the use of an adventure-therapy approach with this population despite the promising literature on ABC with other samples. Participants were mentally ill offenders at the Southwest Center for Forensic Mental Health Care in St. Thomas, Ontario. Seventeen participants took part in a 12-session ABC program which addressed interpersonal skills through group challenge activities. Measures of interpersonal behaviour were assessed using both self-report questionnaires and file review. Results showed hypothesized …

Creative Economies: Using Arts To Revitalize Post-Industrial Cities And Towns In Massachusetts, Anna Price
Honors College Theses
During my senior year in the Honors College at UMass Boston, I became involved in the yearlong Creative and Social Entrepreneurship Fellowship program. During this program, I interned alongside other UMass Boston students at a local creative non-profit organization, providing the staff with assistance as they worked towards achieving their goals. This internship was funded by the Creative Economy Fund (CE Fund) from the University of Massachusetts President’s Office. My involvement in this program sparked an interest in pursuing an Honors thesis investigating the CE Fund and how the awarded projects are benefitted by that fund.
After looking through all …

Fascism, Flamenco, And Ballet Español: Nacionalflamenquismo, Theresa Goldbach
Fascism, Flamenco, And Ballet Español: Nacionalflamenquismo, Theresa Goldbach
Theatre & Dance ETDs
The nationalist regime of General Francisco Franco (1936-1975) dramatically and forcefully reshaped every element of Spanish culture including dance and flamenco. Many flamencologists derisively refer to the resulting product of this system as nacionalflamenquismo or national-flamencoism. The bureaucratic mechanics that created nacionalflamenquismo evolved throughout the first three decades of the regime to fit with changing economic and political realities. As Spain re-entered the global community following its Civil War (1936-1939), flamenco and Spanish dance proved useful tools for international public relations as well as domestic propaganda. By discerning the various factors that linked the art of flamenco to the political …

Surveillance In Chicago: Growing, But For What Purpose?, Rajiv Shah
Rajiv Shah
Chicago is now one of the leading cities in the world in using surveillance technology. This growth began in 2003 when cameras were used to fight street level crime. Since then, Chicago’s camera network has grown to over 25,000 units, along with the use of a variety of new technologies. This chapter explains this growth and how it affects policing.

Bridging The Gap?, Colin Salter
Colin Salter
The political context of the conversion of the Historic Tramway Bridge, adjacent to Sandon Point in Bulli (NSW, Australia), and how this was exploited to serve predetermined ends, illustrates that technologies can be designed to have particular social (and political) effects. Through reflection on this relatively small engineering project, this paper provides a concrete example of what Langdon Winner (1986) attempted to expose in his (in)famous and contested analysis of “the low bridges of Robert Moses”. The means through which this project reflected specific political and economic interests, and how such interests were largely unmarked and unquestioned, locate issues of …
Sharing Music Files: Tactics Of A Challenge To The Industry, Brian Martin, Christopher L. Moore, Colin Salter
Sharing Music Files: Tactics Of A Challenge To The Industry, Brian Martin, Christopher L. Moore, Colin Salter
Colin Salter
The sharing of music files has been the focus of a massive struggle between representatives of major record companies and artists in the music industry, on one side, and peer-to-peer (p2p) file-sharing services and their users, on the other. This struggle can be analysed in terms of tactics used by the two sides, which can be classified into five categories: cover-up versus exposure, devaluation versus validation, interpretation versus alternative interpretation, official channels versus mobilisation, and intimidation versus resistance. It is valuable to understand these tactics because similar ones are likely to be used in ongoing struggles between users of p2p …

Whiteness And Social Change: Remnant Colonialisms And White Civility In Australia And Canada, Colin Salter
Colin Salter
In the early hours of the Sunday 19 September 2004, two men were seen running away from McCauley's Beach towards the coastal village of Thirroul, located south of Sydney in the northern suburbs of the Illawarra region of New South Wales (NSW), Australia. Moments later the nearby Sandon Point Aboriginal Tent Embassy (SPATE) burst into flames. The complete destruction of the embassy's structure and the life-threatening situation for the five people who were asleep inside marked a significant point in the long-running dispute over the future of the Sandon Point area. The assailants' actions provide a stark contrast to those …

Social Responsibility Reporting: Evidence From India’S Leading Corporations, Shalini Jain
Academic Conference on Good Business
Abstract
In this article, I examine how 121 leading corporations in India communicate the external relevance of their corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs/outputs and whether these outputs vary by ownership identity (foreign, government, and family), industry affiliation (environmentally sensitive and consumer proximate), and market orientation (inward and outward). I use content analysis from corporate websites, annual reports, and CSR/Sustainability reports to create a unique database on India. Indicators include issuance of stand-alone CSR/Sustainability reports, participation in GRI, UNGC, Carbon Disclosure Project, and UN Carbon Credits reporting and auditing, social and environmental data and disclosure scores, and CSR/Sustainability awards. My analysis …
