Books And Websites, E-Journals Or Print: If The Source Fits, Use It, Todd J. Wiebe Dec 2014

Books And Websites, E-Journals Or Print: If The Source Fits, Use It, Todd J. Wiebe

Todd J Wiebe

Despite the ever-growing range of media types, formats, and information-access options, students are often instructed to only use specific sources in their research. They are sometimes even given strict guidelines, prescribing how many of each they need to, or may, cite. It is important not to lead students to believe there is a formula for the ideal works cited for all research topics. In contrast, students should learn to think critically about the content and appropriateness of each potential source rather than choosing it only because it is a book, a journal article, a Website, etc. This article argues that …

Leveraging The "Google Mentality": 1search And The New (Inter)Face Of Library Discovery, Todd J. Wiebe, Jessica Hronchek

Todd J Wiebe

1Search is a "discovery tool" that allows users to explore a large and diverse range of library content (e.g., books, e-books, full-text articles, other digital collections)—all from a single search box. Librarians plan to leverage the simplicity of 1Search as a library gateway to open up new opportunities for teaching information literacy.

Attitudes Towards Partner Violence And Gender Roles In Uruguayan Women, Maximo Rossi, Marisa Bucheli Dec 2014

Attitudes Towards Partner Violence And Gender Roles In Uruguayan Women, Maximo Rossi, Marisa Bucheli

Maximo Rossi

According to World Health Organization (2013), 30% of even-partnered women have experienced either physical or/and sexual intimate partner violence (IPV) in the course of their lives.

The incidence of IPV in Latin America and Caribbean region is higher relative to other high income and middle-income countries. This problem is particularly relevant in Uruguay. The empirical literature provides evidence that violence towards partners is more likely among individuals that justify, approve or favor this type of violence.

This paper explores the extent to which tolerant attitudes to violence against women are correlated with tolerance to violence against men, and the relation …

Stepping Up: Burden Sharing By Nato's Newest Members, Joel Hillison Dec 2014

Stepping Up: Burden Sharing By Nato's Newest Members, Joel Hillison

Joel R. Hillison

This book examines the burden sharing behavior of new NATO members. It makes the argument that new NATO members are burden sharing at a greater rate than older NATO members. It also suggests that NATO’s expansion did not lead to greater free-riding behavior in NATO, contrary to the predictions of the collective action literature. This analysis reveals that new NATO members have demonstrated the willingness to contribute to NATO missions, but are often constrained by their limited capabilities. This argument is supported using case studies, interviews with key NATO officials, and quantitative analysis of NATO defense expenditures and troop contributions. …

Health Professionals’ Roles In Animal Agriculture, Climate Change, And Human Health, Aysha Z. Akhtar, Michael Greger, Hope Ferdowsian, Erica Frank

Michael Greger, MD, FACLM

What we eat is rapidly becoming an issue of global concern. With food shortages, the rise in chronic disease, and global warming, the impact of our dietary choices seems more relevant today than ever. Globally, a transition is taking place toward greater consumption of foods of animal origin, in lieu of plantbased diets. With this transition comes intensification of animal agriculture that in turn is associated with the emergence of zoonotic infectious diseases, environmental degradation, and the epidemics of chronic disease and obesity. Health professionals should be aware of these trends and consider them as they promote healthier and more …

Rediscovering Academic Libraries For Degree-Seeking Older Students, Marilia Antunez, Mary Aagard Dec 2014

Rediscovering Academic Libraries For Degree-Seeking Older Students, Marilia Antunez, Mary Aagard

Marilia Y. Antunez, MLS, MA

Increasingly higher numbers of older adults are returning to college campuses to earn degrees. Despite the recent economic recession and cuts to some state tuition waiver programs for older adults, many older students continue to pursue academic degrees on college campuses. Overwhelmingly, the literature that focuses on lifelong learning by older students has not incorporated degree-seeking students in their studies. This exploratory study is also driven by the role of libraries in serving this diverse student population. While the growing non-traditional student population brings many benefits to the life of college campuses, many of these students also face challenges in …

Perspectives On The Global Financial Crisis From Emerging Managers And Public Policy Makers [Full Version], James L. Grant

James L. Grant

This manuscript attempts to capture the perspectives of emerging managers and public policy makers as evinced in the perspectives of graduate students and others who were enrolled in my newly developed course on the global financial crisis—first offered in the 2010 Harvard Summer Economics Program—at a time when students were engaged in the midst and aftermath of the most severe U.S. and worldwide recession since the Great Depression of the early 1930s. The many perspectives gathered on the causes, consequences, remedies, and perhaps more importantly, a glimpse at student thoughts, concerns, and worries at the time—have been collected from the …

Exploring And Utilizing The Concept Of Setting Conditions In The Functional Assessment Process, Linda Aldridge, Richard Harrison, Kimberly Harrison, Cherie Blanchat Dec 2014

Exploring And Utilizing The Concept Of Setting Conditions In The Functional Assessment Process, Linda Aldridge, Richard Harrison, Kimberly Harrison, Cherie Blanchat

Journal of Adolescent and Family Health

Functional assessment is embedded in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) (1997) and Positive Behavioral Supports (PBS) (Horner & Carr, 1997). While the process of functional assessment has helped many students become more successful in the educational setting, it is time to take a deeper look at those conditions from which behaviors originate. Such conditions, referred to in this article as setting conditions, often serve to initiate and sustain inappropriate behaviors that are the focus of the functional assessment. Unless directly analyzed, setting conditions weaken the impact of interventions focused solely upon those factors targeted in the Antecedent Behavior …

The Native American Organic Garden: Using Service Learning As A Site Of Resistance To The Boarding School Tradition, Donna Chollett Dec 2014

The Native American Organic Garden: Using Service Learning As A Site Of Resistance To The Boarding School Tradition, Donna Chollett

Anthropology Publications

As educators, we owe it to our students to enable them to transgress structural impediments and to create sustainable alternatives from the margins of the industrial agro-food system. Policies of assimilation, allotment, and enclosure of the Native American commons and ecosystems brought devastation to Native cultures. Dependence on government commodities replaced Native food sovereignty and contributed to malnutrition, obesity, and diabetes as diets responded to corporately produced and processed foods. Young people often feel disempowered and ask how they might confront such formidable forces as corporate control of our agro-food system, destruction of natural resources, and threats to human health. …

Nebraska Department Of Correctional Services Reentry Initiative Vocational & Life Skills Program Grant Announcement - Application For Funding, Uno Nebraska Center For Justice Research

Reports

The NDCS Reentry Initiative involves a systemic approach for individuals to return to their communities. Reentry is not a “program”, it is an intentional mind-set; it is a method of facilitating the incarcerated and/or supervised individual’s return to his/her community as a productive and law abiding citizen.

Successful reentry:

 Provides increased public safety by reducing the number of victims

o This is achieved by reducing the likelihood of continued criminal behavior, essentially lowering the recidivism rate

 Provides a plan for assessing and addressing risks and needs

o This plan involves a reentry-focused case management system from first contact …
