A Parametric Description Of Modern Military Culture For Civilian Mental Health Practitioners To Better Serve Those Who Serve, Ruthann R. Lester Jun 2014

A Parametric Description Of Modern Military Culture For Civilian Mental Health Practitioners To Better Serve Those Who Serve, Ruthann R. Lester

Graduate School of Professional Psychology: Doctoral Papers and Masters Projects

Many mental health practitioners will have therapeutic encounters with veterans at one point or another during the course of their training or career. To meet the therapeutic needs of those who have served or are serving our country through combat or non-combat military service, it is essential that these practitioners are able to provide effective interventions for this population. Effective treatment entails culturally competent care, however, few resources are available to help civilian mental health practitioners become educated about military culture and translate that cultural competence into efficacious treatment. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to respond to the …

Religious Institutions And Entrepreneurship Among Marginalized Groups, Ryan Scott Coles Jun 2014

Religious Institutions And Entrepreneurship Among Marginalized Groups, Ryan Scott Coles

Theses and Dissertations

The phenomenon of entrepreneurship has become increasingly important to civic and private leaders all over the world. In response to calls by scholars to develop theory on entrepreneurship by conducting systematic analyses of how specific institutions shape the entrepreneurial process, the current study explores how Muslim and Mormon religious institutions shape entrepreneurship for their adherents. Through observation and in-depth interviews with Muslim and Mormon entrepreneurs, the study found that religious institutions from both faiths shaped several important entrepreneurial phenomena: decision making, confidence and support, opportunity creation, and opportunity recognition, as well as management and other entrepreneurial skills. The study shows …

Rockfall Detection From Terrestrial Lidar Point Clouds: A Clustering Approach Using R, Marj Tonini, Antonio Abellan Jun 2014

Rockfall Detection From Terrestrial Lidar Point Clouds: A Clustering Approach Using R, Marj Tonini, Antonio Abellan

Journal of Spatial Information Science

In this study we analyzed a series of terrestrial LiDAR point clouds acquired over a cliff in Puigcercos (Catalonia Spain). The objective was to detect and extract individual rockfall events that occurred during a time span of six months and to investigate their spatial distribution. To this end local and global cluster algorithms were applied. First we used the nearest neighbor clutter removal (NNCR) method in combination with the expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm to separate feature points from clutter; then a density based algorithm (DBSCAN) allowed us to isolate the single cluster features which represented the rockfall events. Finally we estimated …

Dissemination And Geovisualization Of Territorial Entities' History, Christine Plumejeaud, Eric Grosso, Benjamin Parent Jun 2014

Dissemination And Geovisualization Of Territorial Entities' History, Christine Plumejeaud, Eric Grosso, Benjamin Parent

Journal of Spatial Information Science

This paper describes an innovative solution for geovisualization of the demographic and administrative history of French municipalities named "communes" in French. This solution allows for the open dissemination of such data. The challenge is to provide a web interface for unskilled users in order to help them understand complex information about the demographic evolution of French territories. Our approach combines interactive thematic spatial and temporal views. We describe our architecture based on open-source technologies and the organization of this imperfect geo-historical information in our spatiotemporal database. Our second contribution concerns the concept of an acquaintance graph that has been used …

Geo-Social Visual Analytics, Wei Luo, Alan M. Maceachren Jun 2014

Geo-Social Visual Analytics, Wei Luo, Alan M. Maceachren

Journal of Spatial Information Science

Spatial analysis and social network analysis typically consider social processes in their own specific contexts either geographical or network space. Both approaches demonstrate strong conceptual overlaps. For example actors close to each other tend to have greater similarity than those far apart; this phenomenon has different labels in geography (spatial autocorrelation) and in network science (homophily). In spite of those conceptual and observed overlaps the integration of geography and social network context has not received the attention needed in order to develop a comprehensive understanding of their interaction or their impact on outcomes of interest such as population health behaviors …

Integrating Cross-Scale Analysis In The Spatial And Temporal Domains For Classification Of Behavioral Movement, Ali Soleymani, Jonathan Cachat, Kyle Robinson, Somayeh Dodge, Allan Kalueff, Robert Weibel Jun 2014

Integrating Cross-Scale Analysis In The Spatial And Temporal Domains For Classification Of Behavioral Movement, Ali Soleymani, Jonathan Cachat, Kyle Robinson, Somayeh Dodge, Allan Kalueff, Robert Weibel

Journal of Spatial Information Science

Since various behavioral movement patterns are likely to be valid within different unique ranges of spatial and temporal scales (e.g. instantaneous diurnal or seasonal) with the corresponding spatial extents a cross-scale approach is needed for accurate classification of behaviors expressed in movement. Here we introduce a methodology for the characterization and classification of behavioral movement data that relies on computing and analyzing movement features jointly in both the spatial and temporal domains. The proposed methodology consists of three stages. In the first stage focusing on the spatial domain the underlying movement space is partitioned into several zonings that correspond to …

Computational Studies Of Multiple-Particle Nonlinear Dynamics In A Spatio-Temporally Periodic Potential, Owen D. Myers, Junru Wu, Jeffrey S. Marshall, Christopher M. Danforth Jun 2014

Computational Studies Of Multiple-Particle Nonlinear Dynamics In A Spatio-Temporally Periodic Potential, Owen D. Myers, Junru Wu, Jeffrey S. Marshall, Christopher M. Danforth

College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences Faculty Publications

The spatio-temporally periodic (STP) potential is interesting in Physics due to the intimate coupling between its time and spatial components. In this paper, we begin with a brief discussion of the dynamical behaviors of a single particle in a STP potential and then examine the dynamics of multiple particles interacting in a STP potential via the electric Coulomb potential. For the multiple particles' case, we focus on the occurrence of bifurcations when the amplitude of the STP potential varies. It is found that the particle concentration of the system plays an important role; the type of bifurcations that occur and …

Assessing Hands-On Learning In Special Collections: A Pilot Study, Sarah M. Horowitz, Stefanie R. Bluemle, Ellen Hay, Mark Salisbury

Library and Information Science: Faculty Scholarship & Creative Works

This Assessment in Action project addressed the effect of using original primary materials on first-year students’ information literacy (IL) and critical thinking skills. IL and critical thinking are among Augustana College’s college-wide student learning outcomes. More than 25% of Augustana first-years use Special Collections each year, yet we had little data on how this affected student learning. The study evaluated a worksheet given as a pre- and post-test around class visits to work in Special Collections, and papers by students who did and did not visit Special Collections with class.

Pepperdine University Libraries

Patrons want library collections to be unrestricted in scope. Demands for information resources are increasing while libraries are facing decreasing budgets and minimal staffing support. ILL and consortial services can help libraries expand access to collections. Patron-initiated borrowing systems are a current trend in libraries, but seamlessly integrating them is challenging. Our poster will analyze problems in patron-initiated consortial borrowing and lending services. We will introduce our new generation service, which combines more than four complex library systems and allows them to work together in real-time availability: the OPAC, a consortial borrowing system, an ILL system, an ILS, and an …

Did We Succeed? Assessing A New Instruction Initiative For A Revamped Physics Lab, Carrie C. Leatherman

Carrie C Leatherman

Assessment has become an important component of any discussion on planning or implementing new library services as well as evaluating existing ones. Yet it is often difficult to know how to proceed with assessment, what tools to use, and how to implement the results of assessment. This session presented a practical example of assessing a new a Science and Technology library service with emphasis placed on how assessment was incorporated into planning process, what tools were used, and what the practical outcomes of that assessment were.

Libraries In The Course Management System: Best Practices And New Directions, Lily Todorinova, Matt Torrence, Jon Jeffreys

Matt Torrence

Course Management Systems (CMS), such as Blackboard, Sakai, Canvas Instructure, and Moodle are ubiquitous in the classroom environment. These systems are bridging the gap between traditional, hybrid, and fully online classes, as most academic institutions have adopted the use of a CMS across a wide spectrum: from serving to keep track of administrative processes, such as grading and attendance, to being the main tool for organizing and communicating course information for both faculty and students. Libraries have responded by implementing a variety of services in the CMS, including LibGuides, chat widgets, discovery search tools, and more. Three academic library panelists …

Cross-Hauling In Input-Output Tables: Comments On Charm, Randall Jackson Jun 2014

Cross-Hauling In Input-Output Tables: Comments On Charm, Randall Jackson

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

This brief note draws further attention to cross-hauling in regional input-output table estimation, and specifically identifies conceptual issues associated with Kronenberg”s CHARM method for adjusting input-output regionalization methods. Despite the shortcomings of the CHARM approach as it now stands, this is a very important line of research. I believe that progress made on the CHARM method is encouraging, and hope that future work will resolve remaining issues.

Human Rights, Women, And Third World Development, Winston E. Langley Jun 2014

Human Rights, Women, And Third World Development, Winston E. Langley

Winston E. Langley

As part of the effort to inaugurate a new international socio-political order after World War II, international emphasis was given to certain moral and legal entitlements we have come to call human rights. That emphasis initially found its most forceful expression in the Charter of the United Nations, which not only asserts its members' faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person, as well as in the equal rights of men and women of all nations, but also recites its members' commitment to employ international machinery for the promotion of the social and economic …

Shared Print Agreements For Monographs: A User's Manual, Matthew Revitt

Library Staff Publications

The document is presented in sections which reflect the different ingredients we consider are required for a successful shared print initiative. Each section discusses issues that shared print initiatives should consider and offers advice regarding addressing this issue. Alongside this (in italics) are the Maine Shared Collection Strategy’s own experiences in negotiating these issues, including the decisions we made and the alternatives we decided against.

The first section, “Shared Print Objectives”, discusses the need for shared print initiatives to determine their objectives, so that everyone involved is pulling in the same direction. Having agreed objectives, the next section, “Membership”, describes …
