Cyberplagiarism And The Library: Issues And Solutions, Jennifer Sharkey, Bartow Culp
Cyberplagiarism And The Library: Issues And Solutions, Jennifer Sharkey, Bartow Culp
Jennifer Sharkey
Plagiarism by students in academic institutions is an old but continuing problem facing teachers and librarians. Although studies disagree on the Internet’s effect on student plagiarism, the easy availability of electronic information creates a challenge for librarians, who must be ready not only to detect and deter plagiarism, but also to educate their patrons about it. The purpose of this contribution is to summarize briefly the nature, extent and causes of plagiarism in its academic aspect, especially as it has been influenced by electronic information sources, and to review measures of its detection and deterrence.
Learning Style Dimensions And Professional Characteristics Of Academic Librarians, Amanda Rinehart, Jennifer Sharkey, Chad Kahl
Learning Style Dimensions And Professional Characteristics Of Academic Librarians, Amanda Rinehart, Jennifer Sharkey, Chad Kahl
Jennifer Sharkey
Do librarians with different characteristics, such as type of work responsibilities or age, have different learning styles? The authors analyzed results from over 1,500 responses to a version of the Index of Learning Styles (ILS) questionnaire based on the Felder-Silverman Learning Styles model. This model consists of eight dimensions paired on four scales: Active / Reflective; Sensing / Intuitive; Visual / Verbal; and Sequential / Global. In addition to their scores on the ILS questionnaire, respondents were also asked about demographic and professional characteristics. Statistically significant differences in learning style scores were found to exist between librarians with different types …

Seeking An Identity: The Portrayal Of Archivists In Film, Anne Daniel, Amanda Oliver
Seeking An Identity: The Portrayal Of Archivists In Film, Anne Daniel, Amanda Oliver
Anne Daniel
The image of archivists in media can sometimes seem nebulous. From descriptions of dusty, unorganized vaults and cardigan-clad gatekeepers, there appears to be many stereotypes perpetuated in media. Building upon previous research in this area, this study aims to investigate how archivists are portrayed in film. Films involving archives and archivists were selected and a content analysis of these films was conducted to address the following questions: is there an archivist in the film and how is the character portrayed? Can specific stereotypes be identified? Do archivists have their own distinct identities in films or is the archivist a non-descript …

Differences Between Students With And Without Adhd On Task Vigilance Under Conditions Of Distraction, Peter Ross, Justus Randolph
Differences Between Students With And Without Adhd On Task Vigilance Under Conditions Of Distraction, Peter Ross, Justus Randolph
Journal of Educational Research and Practice
Distraction is a typical component of any classroom environment. For effective instruction and learning to take place, it is critical for students to eventually return to task and maintain task vigilance (i.e., returning to the task at hand) when a distraction occurs. Students with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), by definition, are more distractible than students without ADHD. However, studies showing specific variability of task vigilance between students with and without ADHD are limited. This correlational study examined the differences in distractibility on task vigilance between students with and without ADHD under conditions of distraction. Two groups of participants, ranging …

University Libraries Faculty Scholarship
This poster session highlights a marketing initiative for graphic novels, an underutilized collection, at the University at Albany. The marketing initiative was a collaboration between the presenters and the University Library’s Marketing Coordinating Committee. It included an exhibit case, book marks, a library Pinterest page, a designated location for the books with signage to draw attention to the books, writing a piece for the Libraries’ newsletter, creating a promotional slide for the library lobby and website, coordinating with the bibliographer in the Science Library about her graphic novel display, and sending emails notifying staff about the display.

Longevity And Mortality Of Cats Attending Primary Care Veterinary Practices In England, Dan G. O'Neill, David B. Church, Paul D. Mcgreevy, Peter C. Thomson, Dave C. Brodbelt
Demography and Statistics for Companion Animal Populations Collection
Enhanced knowledge on longevity and mortality in cats should support improved breeding, husbandry, clinical care and disease prevention strategies. The VetCompass research database of primary care veterinary practice data offers an extensive resource of clinical health information on companion animals in the UK. This study aimed to characterise longevity and mortality in cats, and to identify important demographic risk factors for compromised longevity. Crossbred cats were hypothesised to live longer than purebred cats. Descriptive statistics were used to characterise the deceased cats. Multivariable linear regression methods investigated risk factor association with longevity in cats that died at or after 5 …

Comprehensive Security Research To Contribute To Critical Infrastructure Protection Contributions To Security Governance In Disaster Risk Reduction, Rosemarie Stangl, Alexander Siedschlag, Diana Silvestru, Florian Fritz, Andrea Jerković
Publications
Critical infrastructure protection (CIP) has become a major issue in civil security, emergency management and natural hazard management. The all-hazard approach has gained ground on the international scale, and the “comprehensive approach” in security policies and security research has been advanced in order to meet current and future threats based on better integrated information, assessment, policies and capabilities. This paper aims to showcase this “comprehensive approach”, highlighting its character and cross-links to CI and natural hazard and disaster management. The paper also contributes to a broader perspective on CIP by addressing current European political concepts and socio-cultural conditions, as well …

Methods To Integrate Considerations On Culture, Ethics And Citizen Acceptance Into Urban Planning For Resilience Enhancing And Vulnerability Reduction, Alexander Siedschlag, Diana Silvestru, Florian Fritz, Andrea Jerković, Sussane Kindl

This paper presents selected relevant research results from the EU FP7 project VITRUV (“Vulnerability Identification Tools for Resilience Enhancements of Urban Environments”), relating to methods to integrate consideration on culture and ethics aspects, including citizen acceptance, into conceptual urban planning. While security aspects do not always figure prominently in urban planning, much of that planning has effects on citizens’ security. Security aspects obviously have an influence on how built environment is changed and developed. Conversely, the way in which built environment is changed and developed influences the security of infrastructures and society as a whole, both in manifest and in …

Background: Policies that improve access to healthy, affordable foods may improve population health and reduce health disparities. In the United States most food access policy research focuses on urban communities even though residents of rural communities face disproportionately higher risk for nutrition-related chronic diseases compared to residents of urban communities. The purpose of this study was to (1) identify the factors associated with access to healthy, affordable food in rural communities in the United States; and (2) prioritize a meaningful and feasible rural food policy research agenda. Methods. This study was conducted by the Rural Food Access Workgroup (RFAWG), a …

This study examined cultural influence on perceptions towards educational environment and mental health behaviors among adolescents in grades 7 and 10 from both China and the U.S. Utilizing the perspective of cultural activity theory, we explored the behavioral patterns with respect to adolescents’ perceived school climate (school, teacher and peer), perceived parental involvement, time spent watching TV and using computer, and overall assessment of mental health. The results not only indicated significant differences in these factors including various aspects of school climate, parental involvement, media consumption and self-reported mental health status, but also suggested unique developmental trend among Chinese adolescents. …
