Will The U.S. Velocity Of Money Step Up Again? New Evidence From The Random Walk Hypothesis, Anh Thu Tran Xuan Jun 2014

Will The U.S. Velocity Of Money Step Up Again? New Evidence From The Random Walk Hypothesis, Anh Thu Tran Xuan

Undergraduate Economic Review

The recent decrease in U.S. money velocity raises debates about its unit root behavior. This paper revisited the random walk hypothesis (RWH) of the U.S. money velocity in 1960-2010 and two sub-periods 1960-85 and 1986-2010 by applying the Variance Ratio methodologies, including new nonparametric tests by Wright (2000) and Belaire-Franch and Contreras (2004). The results suggested that the velocity would likely increase, and the U.S. monetary policy will soon stimulate GDP and employment. Furthermore, past velocity is important to predict the future outcomes, and changes in financial structural could alter the empirical characteristics of the velocity series.

Understanding The Influence Of Blog On The Development Of Social Capital, Reza Vaezi, Gholamreza Torkzadeh, Jerry Cha-Jan Chang

Reza Vaezi

The rapid use and application of blogs in diverse areas such as education, marketing, journalism, and human resource management in recent years underlines the need for a better understanding of the impact of this new technology on social capital. Social capital reflects the norm of reciprocity and the level of trust among individuals who connect, interact, and benefit from one another. Blog is expected to influence the extent and the scope of this interaction by providing new means of networking among people. This paper examines the relationship between blog use and social capital and reports on the results of an …

Bridging The Sport And Recreation Divide, Laurence Chalip, Keri Schwab, Daniel Dustin Jun 2014

Bridging The Sport And Recreation Divide, Laurence Chalip, Keri Schwab, Daniel Dustin

Keri Schwab

In this article we examine sport and recreation's collaborative potential. We begin by identifying some differences between the two fields of study and by acknowledging what heretofore have been some inherent incompatibilities. We discuss how these differences and incompatibilities might be overcome through a paradigm shift based on the fields' common appreciation of the importance of play. We then demonstrate the collaborative potential by illustrating the relevance of play to ameliorating the pervasive obesity problem confronting contemporary society. We conclude by suggesting that an alliance between sport and recreation may result in synergistic effects that strengthen their respective standing within …

Animal Pleasure And Its Moral Significance, Jonathan Balcombe Jun 2014

Animal Pleasure And Its Moral Significance, Jonathan Balcombe

Jonathan Balcombe, PhD

This paper presents arguments for, and evidence in support of, the important role of pleasure in animals’ lives, and outlines its considerable significance to humankind’s relationship to other animals. In the realms of animal sentience, almost all scholarly discussion revolves around its negative aspects: pain, stress, distress, and suffering. By contrast, the positive aspects of sentience – rewards and pleasures – have been rarely broached by scientists. Yet, evolutionary principles predict that animals, like humans, are motivated to seek rewards, and not merely to avoid pain and suffering. Natural selection favours behaviours that enhance survival and procreation. In the conscious, …

Prolonged Pain Research In Mice: Trends In Reference To The 3rs, Jonathan Balcombe, Hope Ferdowsian, Lauren Briese

Jonathan Balcombe, PhD

This literature review documents trends in the use of mice in prolonged pain research, defined herein as research that subjects mice to a source of pain for at least 14 days. The total amount of prolonged pain research on mice has increased dramatically in the past decade for the 3 pain categories examined: neuropathic, inflammatory, and chronic pain. There has also been a significant rise in the number of prolonged mouse pain studies as a proportion of all mouse studies and of all mouse pain studies. The use of transgenic mice has also risen significantly in prolonged pain research, though …

Cancerous Contradictions: The Mis-Regulation Of Human Carcinogens Based On Animal Data, Andrew Knight, Jarrod Bailey, Jonathan Balcombe Jun 2014

Cancerous Contradictions: The Mis-Regulation Of Human Carcinogens Based On Animal Data, Andrew Knight, Jarrod Bailey, Jonathan Balcombe

Jonathan Balcombe, PhD

The regulation of human exposures to potential carcinogens constitutes society’s most important use of animal carcinogenicity data. However, for environmental contaminants of greatest U.S. concern, we found that in most cases (58.1%; 93/160) the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) considered the animal data inadequate to support a classification of probable human carcinogen or noncarcinogen.

The World Health Organisation’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) is a leading international authority on carcinogenicity assessments. For chemicals lacking human exposure data (the great majority), IARC classifications of identical chemicals were significantly more conservative than EPA classifications (p

If You Build It, They Will Come (If You Invite Them Thoughtfully): Institutional Repositories In Academic Libraries, Janelle Wertzberger

Janelle Wertzberger

The road to a successful institutional repository is a long and involved one - so where would an interested library begin? What are some important initial considerations? What options exist for repository platforms? Eric Jeitner will discuss some of those considerations, as well as the methodology used to decide on the staging for Arcadia University's ScholarWorks repository.

After picking a platform, decisions must be made about what work belongs in your IR, and why. How can librarians build campus awareness about open access? Who should be promoting your IR? Janelle Wertzberger will talk about the education and outreach efforts that …

Hospitality Review

The aim of this study is to analyze the perception of European destinations through the eyes of Indian Bollywood film viewers to determine how perception is influenced by what is viewed in films. Researchers surveyed Indian consumers and collected 670 usable surveys. European destinations were divided into top five and bottom five destinations for Indian tourists, and data was then compared to world tourism statistics. Results indicate differences in destination preference among Bollywood viewers and worldwide tourist trends. Findings indicate that prominently featuring a landscape within Bollywood films can significantly impact Indians’ perception on the destinations’ image. European countries frequently …

A Theory Of Political Entrenchment, Gilles Saint-Paul, Davide Ticchi, Andrea Vindigni Jun 2014

A Theory Of Political Entrenchment, Gilles Saint-Paul, Davide Ticchi, Andrea Vindigni

Andrea Vindigni

We develop a theory of endogenous political entrenchment in a simple two-party dynamic model of income redistribution with probabilistic voting. A partially self-interested left-wing party may implement (entrenchment) policies reducing the income of its own constituency, the lower class, in order to consolidate its future political power. Such policies increase the net gain that low-skill agents obtain from income redistribution, which only the Left (but not the Right) can credibly commit to provide, and therefore may help offsetting a potential future aggregate ideological shock averse to the left-wing party. We demonstrate that political entrenchment by the Left occurs only if …

In The Words Of The Medical Tourist: An Analysis Of Internet Narratives By Health Travelers To Turkey, Margaret E. Ozan-Rafferty, James Allen Johnson, Gulzar H. Shah, Attila Kursun

Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

Background: Patients regularly travel to the West for advanced medical care, but now the trend is also shifting in the opposite direction. Many people from Western countries now seek care outside of their country. This phenomenon has been labeled medical tourism or health travel. Information regarding health travelers’ actual outcomes, experiences, and perceptions is lacking or insufficient. However, advanced Internet technology and apps provide information on medical tourism and are a vehicle for patients to share their experiences. Turkey has a large number of internationally accredited hospitals, is a top tourism destination, and is positioning itself to attract international patients. …

Changes In The Acquisition Process At Ntnu University Library, Rune Brandshaug Jun 2014

Changes In The Acquisition Process At Ntnu University Library, Rune Brandshaug

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

During the last 2-3 years there have been changes implemented in the acquisition processes at the NTNU university library. These changes have been implemented on different levels in the organization and in many areas.

Selection of vendors for delivery of information resources is conducted through tenders. The library has currently an agreement with 4 vendors, one for journals, databases and e-books, and 3 for printed books. These vendors give the university library access to large online collections of books and journals, often with high quality metadata.

To make the acquisition process more effective, the university library has started to use …

Reorganizing The Relationship Of Digital Library Resources And Physical Learning Environments, Antti M. Rousi, Michael Fosmire, Risto Maijala, Benjamin D. Branch, Nicole Kong

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Introduction. This study examines the theoretical variance of user experience generated by linking digital library resources via QR codes into library learning environments. Methods. A heuristic evaluation was done about the theoretical variance of user experience created by the QR code linking procedure. This evaluation was based on Garrett’s (2003) framework of user experience. The targets of the evaluation were two existing QR code portals of both Aalto and Purdue University Libraries. Results. The existing QR code portals generate variation of varying degrees into all of the elements of user experience. Conclusion. Despite the breadth of variance created, perhaps the …

Open Versus Closed: Private Versus Public - A Library And Research Perspective, Tom Cochrane

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

This keynote presentation starts with a consideration of the privacy and security obligations of libraries in their universities and moves on to an assessment of choices to be made in the policy and practice of optimising access. It proposes a view of a “threaded” principle underlying professional responses to censorship, to the invasion of the privacy of users, and on to interacting with the open agendas that have developed in the digital age. These agendas include open source, open content licensing, open access and open data. It reviews how these agendas mesh with rapid changes in the techniques and capabilities …

From Hub To Beacon: Evolution And Evaluation Of Spaces In The Learning Commons, Barbara Paton, Belinda Moore Jun 2014

From Hub To Beacon: Evolution And Evaluation Of Spaces In The Learning Commons, Barbara Paton, Belinda Moore

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Learning spaces in academic libraries have changed over the last 15-20 years, emerging initially as spaces labelled as ‘information commons’ and transforming into a variety of spaces described as learning spaces, student hubs, and so on. The financial investment in the development of learning spaces in libraries has been significant. As these spaces have evolved, the evaluation of their impact and success has also emerged as an important issue, from the perspectives of judicious use of financial resources as well as contribution to the student experience and student learning outcomes. The need to undertake formal evaluation of such investments in …

The Stick Or The Carrot? An Approach To Open Access, Randi Tyse Eriksen, Jorunn Alstad Jun 2014

The Stick Or The Carrot? An Approach To Open Access, Randi Tyse Eriksen, Jorunn Alstad

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

In Norway, as internationally, Open Access (OA) policy states that officially funded research should be open to the public. This paper touches upon the EU’s new OA-initiative (Horizon 2020) before giving a short description of the guidelines from the Norwegian Government and the National Research Council of Norway, as well as NTNU’s and other Norwegian Universities’ OA policies. Through the Norwegian CRIStin database, which was established in 2010, Norway has a national system for registration of academic publishing. Reporting these and other data concerning academic activities to the government partially dictates funding. Together with institutional archives for realizing green OA …

Minimal Resources With Maximum Impact: Low-Cost And Sustainable Means For Library Promotions, Karryl Kim A. Sagun

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

While it is a generally shared fact around the globe that funding for library promotion (and in most cases, libraries in general) be rendered as a pressing concern, the fact remains that this challenge is truer in developing countries such as the Philippines. Librarians in charge of promoting the library can either choose to fight--defend their “rights” for a slice of the budget pie, or take flight--just do away with library promotion altogether. However, results of a low-cost and sustainable marketing strategy employed by the Rizal Library of the Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippines prove that there is …
