Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Values Based Training To Impact Physical Activity In Adults, Jessica Sykes
Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Values Based Training To Impact Physical Activity In Adults, Jessica Sykes
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study aimed to investigate the use of values based training with typically developing adults to affect levels of physical activity recorded by FitBit Flex technology in the form of step count. Traditional approaches have shown promise but with mixed results. Interestingly, one must look outside of behavior analysis for interventions attempting to affect control by an individual’s covert verbal behavior. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) has been shown to be effective in various behavior change areas by using a values based approach that focuses on the control of rules and their motivative functions. An ACT training protocol (ACTr) consisting …

Linking Insomnia And Suicide Ideation: The Role Of Socio-Cognitive Mechanisms In Suicide Risk, Melanie Lauren Bozzay
Linking Insomnia And Suicide Ideation: The Role Of Socio-Cognitive Mechanisms In Suicide Risk, Melanie Lauren Bozzay
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Despite what is known about predictors of suicide risk and consequences of insomnia, research has yet to delineate mechanisms that may explain the known relationship between insomnia symptoms and suicide risk. There is some disagreement in the literature regarding whether this relationship could be primarily explained by recent depressive symptoms, or whether there may be other explanatory factors related to sleep deficits. The present study addressed this contention in the literature by examining 1) whether socio-cognitive variables (e.g. fatigue, appraised social problem-solving ability, and hopelessness) explained this insomnia-ideation relationship, and 2) whether these variables contributed some explanatory variance in suicide …
Investigation Of The Effects Of Impulsivity And Executive Function On A Complex Prospective Memory Task, Emily Kellogg
Investigation Of The Effects Of Impulsivity And Executive Function On A Complex Prospective Memory Task, Emily Kellogg
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Prospective memory is colloquially known as “remembering to remember” and refers to forming an intention in the present time to fulfill at some point in the future. It has previously been studied within the context of executive functioning (i.e., purposive and goal directed behavior) and impulsive behaviors (e.g., gambling, risk seeking) within clinical populations. This study sought to further elucidate the relationships of impulsivity and executive functions on prospective memory in a non-clinical population. One hundred and nine undergraduates completed the UPPS-P impulsivity self-report questionnaire, three cognitive tasks measuring components of executive function, (i.e., planning, inhibition, and switching), and a …
Evaluating Preference For And Effectiveness Of Telehealth And In-Person Parent Training, Jennifer Michelle Stich
Evaluating Preference For And Effectiveness Of Telehealth And In-Person Parent Training, Jennifer Michelle Stich
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Telehealth provides an alternative delivery form of parent training that allows practitioners to disseminate information and feedback at a distance. Telehealth can be as effective as in-person training (Wacker et al., 2013a; Wacker et al., 2013b; Vismara et al., 2009). Despite most telehealth studies indicating high satisfaction, research on patient satisfaction using telehealth has depended mostly on survey instruments, which limits definitive conclusions and may not translate into actual use or selection (Whitten & Love, 2005). The primary purpose of this study was to evaluate a procedure for identifying parent preference of in-person or telehealth training modalities. Secondary purposes were …

Happiest People Alive: An Analysis Of Class And Gender In The Trinidad Carnival, Asha L. St. Bernard
Happiest People Alive: An Analysis Of Class And Gender In The Trinidad Carnival, Asha L. St. Bernard
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Many of the marketing strategies inherent to the modern version of the Trinidad Carnival include texts that represent Trinidadians as young, fit, bikini-wearing, party enthusiasts. In these advertisements, Trinidadians are often characterized as carefree and welcoming to anyone participating in the much-anticipated annual festival. However, dominant narratives highlight certain groups and cultural aspects of the island while frequently masking several inequalities. They cleverly conceal other narratives and therefore marginalize groups and individuals from the very festival that is understood by many as a national symbol. Through informal participant-observation, and an analysis of some of the main promotional material, in particular …
Evolution, Not Revolution: The Digital Divide In American And Australian Contexts, Stuart Murray
Evolution, Not Revolution: The Digital Divide In American And Australian Contexts, Stuart Murray
Stuart Murray
Extract: Revolutions in information and communication technology (ICT) can have a profound impact on the relations between people, nations and institutions. Gutenberg’s invention of a printing press with movable type (circa 1439), for instance, meant that European literature could suddeny be mass produced. The technology transformed the speed and volume at which information was gathered, collated and disseminated – information which permeated then changed society. Similarly, the telegraph, telephone, radio and television dramatically altered the way disparate and estranged humans and states interacted with one another. Such changes were far reaching, but none are quite on the scale of the …
The Productivity Of Wh- Prompts In Child Forensic Interviews, Elizabeth C, Ahern, Samantha J. Andrews, Stacia N. Stolzenberg, Thomas D. Lyon
The Productivity Of Wh- Prompts In Child Forensic Interviews, Elizabeth C, Ahern, Samantha J. Andrews, Stacia N. Stolzenberg, Thomas D. Lyon
Thomas D. Lyon
Child witnesses are often asked wh- prompts (what, how, why, who, when, where) in forensic interviews. However, little research has examined the ways in which children respond to different wh- prompts and no previous research has investigated productivity differences among wh- prompts in investigative interviews. This study examined the use and productivity of wh- prompts in 95 transcripts of 4- to 13-year-olds alleging sexual abuse in child investigative interviews. What-how questions about actions elicited the most productive responses during both the rapport building and substantive phases. Future research and practitioner training should consider distinguishing among different wh- prompts.
Compassion At Work, Jane E. Dutton, Kristina Workman, Ashley E. Hardin
Compassion At Work, Jane E. Dutton, Kristina Workman, Ashley E. Hardin
Kristina Workman
Compassion is an interpersonal process involving the noticing, feeling, sensemaking, and acting that alleviates the suffering of another person. This process has recently received substantial attention by organizational researchers and practitioners alike. This article reviews what researchers currently know about compassion as it unfolds in dyadic interactions in work organizations. We begin by reviewing what we know about the benefits of compassion for the person who is suffering, for the provider of compassion, and for third parties who witness or hear about compassion at work. The heart of the article focuses on what research tells us about embedding compassion in …
Rda: Loss Of Gmd And Changes Regarding Type And Format, Robert Bothmann
Rda: Loss Of Gmd And Changes Regarding Type And Format, Robert Bothmann
Bobby Bothmann
The pending decision to move to RDA is still a few months away, but some libraries have already begun following RDA guidelines. AACR2’s general material designation (GMD) is not perpetuated in RDA guidelines. Instead, RDA records define the content of the expression, the medium of the manifestation, and the carrier of the manifestation. This session will discuss the changes that will occur with RDA vocabulary, the issues related to display of the vocabulary particularly as it relates to special formats, and the effect this change may have on the display in the Aleph OPAC and in MnPALS Plus.

Hitting A Moving Target: Cataloging In An Age Of Emerging Technologies, Robert Bothmann
Bobby Bothmann
Catalogers of yore could rely on the constancy of the handful of formats that were available prior to the digital revolution, knowing that when they woke up each morning a book was still paper and a motion picture was still film. Then one morning things changed and the catalogers of today's world can expect a new quirk every 2-3 months. What do you do when acquisitions gives you slotMusic or some other new-fangled medium to catalog? The PlayAway sound recordings gave you fits and just when you figure it out the PlayAway View comes along. This session will cover some …

The Speaker's Primer, Joesph M. Valenzano Iii, Stephen W. Braden, Melissa A. Broeckelman-Post
Joseph M. Valenzano III
This book addresses the nuts and bolts of crafting and delivering different types of presentations, but unlike other public speaking handbooks, it builds on those principles and offers guidance on speaking in particular professional arenas. Throughout the book, the authors provide sidebars about the importance and application of public speaking principles specific to business, healthcare, education, politics, and the STEM fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. — Description from publisher's website
His Final Homily: Pope John Paul Ii's Death As An Affirmation Of His Life's Message, Joesph M. Valenzano
His Final Homily: Pope John Paul Ii's Death As An Affirmation Of His Life's Message, Joesph M. Valenzano
Joseph M. Valenzano III
Every Sunday morning, a member of the Roman Catholic clergy addresses his flock after a reading from one of the Gospels. These homilies ordinarily last between 10 and 20 minutes and allow the priest an opportunity to interpret the Gospel message from that day's reading, as well as discuss how that message relates to contemporary events and issues. During the final two months of his life, Pope John Paul II provided a longer, more powerful symbolic homily to the world. The message summarized his positions on freedom, suffering, and the dignity of human life.
The Speaker: The Tradition And Practice Of Public Speaking, Joesph M. Valenzano Iii, Stephen W. Braden
The Speaker: The Tradition And Practice Of Public Speaking, Joesph M. Valenzano Iii, Stephen W. Braden
Joseph M. Valenzano III
Speech is both a skill and a field of study. Today, however, the rich tradition of speech communication is either reduced to a few quick mentions of Aristotle and Cicero or lost altogether. Why have we forgotten this history, and more importantly, why are we not sharing these origins with our students? This volume brings tradition to the forefront of public speaking instruction through the lens of skills-centered pedagogy. It will help students understand the “why” behind the “how” of effective public speaking.
